Time .
My first readers will remember I wrote in July 2001 this :
" Every Saturday I wind up the four main clocks of your home . I like hearing sounds of the clocks : a grandfather clock that is more than 100 years old , two old small clocks and a chiming clock which has the same age as me . Remembrances ? Feeling of tempo of life ? Time flowing ? ……."
Here is one of our small clocks . It is made in silvered bronze darkened by …the time . The two people who are dancing vivaciously at the top are two women . Why do they dance since 1900 , date written at the side of the signature on the clock ? Their dance gives the rhythm to the time . But , why two women ? what is the symbol ? One of them wears a hood , the other is bareheaded . Would they show the joyous whirl of generations while the time is flowering ? Perhaps . But maybe there is another meaning …
Do you like the clocks ?

Oh, wow. What a gorgeous clock. Let us know if you find out the symbolism of the two dancing women.
especially when they're on "slow"
I certainly do like the clock. Reminds me that I have to bring an old clock away...that one stopped for some reason and have to be repaired. Will do it this week
beautiful
I love clocks and this one is just gorgeous! It makes me happy when I find things that have such character.
That is a really gorgeous clock, it's so unusual...i really like it!
It is interesting to remember that in some cultures men and women don't dance together. If you have ever seen the movie,"Fiddler On The Roof," it was shocking to the people when that young man started dancing with the girl of his choice. The clock is lovely. I have a clock in every room of our house. Oh, I don't have one in the bathroom.
Oh wow what an excellent clock! I love the way you talk about them. Will you be taking a picture of the 100 year old clock? I think that that would be beautiful! I also love clocks. However I don't have near enough. May time always be our ally! Have a great day and a wonderful tomorrow! ! ! Much love and hugs! ! ! ! Thank you for all your wonderful visits. I have been so busy. I will try to do better! ! !
...happy Monday, Michel!

...oh yes, I like clocks and the one you have shown is gorgeous! Are they dancing? Looks like the one in front is trying to pull away from the other.
...sure you have noticed, during active house hours the ticking is unheard, however, when the house is settled the tick-tock becomes so prevalant. t-i-m-e-i-s-m-a-r-c-h-i-n-g-o-n
Hmm...I guess time goes dancing on. I love old clocks, but I have never seen one like this. I think it is beautiful and even though you say it is a small clock, it doesn't look that small in the picture.
I enjoy looking at pictures of old things. I think most things were made so much better back then, clocks today just do not last that long. I only own one old mantel clock which chimes every half hour and I love it.
Good blog Michel-it gives me something to wonder about for the rest of the day-have a great day!

OMG, I am a clock freak~! what a kewl clock that is
I just love the ticking. I even have a cuckoo clock
what a lovely thing to do.

They're not dancing--they're wrestling..over you, Michel: jealous girlfriends do that!
That is a very unusual clock. Very pretty. My Grandfather collects clocks. He has some really nice ones too.
You can tell the clock is french , its lovely , hope you did not get to battered with the high winds if they came your way
lovely!
thanks
Hmmmm.... why two women? Good question!
I love your clock composition and I love clocks. But time waits for no man!
Thank you for your kind words.
I almost did leave Xanga for good. But now, I find myself blogging again.
I like the clock. You are a man of exceptional taste!
=)
You have a giftr for really seeing the things around you. When I see objects of age, I wish they could talk and tell me of their past. Your clock in the photograph appears most unusual to me. Has it always belonged to a member of your family?
My husband really loves clocks. I've never seen one so beautiful as this one though.
I adore clocks! Not to keep time but to keep the idea of time. I have several clocks in every room. Once again I must tell you how beautiful you see the world and how wonderful it is that you share your sight with us. Thank you for your kind words during my past few days. It's been a difficult time.
Michel, la signature, est-elle lisible? Quel est le nom? ... Lise
That is a beautiful clock. We have several antique clocks that my husband's grandmother gave us. They are precious.
That is a very beautiful clock! It does look very old! How cool for you to have something so rare and beautiful!
I am so glad to have found your sites, you have such cool things to say!
Beautiful. I love the sound of a clock ticking. The clock is lovely. Hope you had a good Monday.
I adore clocks, especially love to listen to the old ones chime. Too bad we now live in a digital generation.
You remind me of my elementary school french teacher. She had such adoration for clocks.
funny how everyone responded in english..lol
tres bien blog!
That clock must be very valuable Do you see BBC antiques roadshow in France?
I love old clocks! I love grandfather clocks! I don't know what exactly the appeal is, but they are wonderful.
The clock in your photo is lovely!
tick tock, tickty tock, your clock is... interesting.
Ansxer to pprjournal : yes the signature is perfectly visible at the side of the date . What is the meaning of the people at the top . I think they show the young and the old people that turn together and go away . It is the time that flies and the life that continues
I love clocks!! I have a fascination with them.. Anne Boleyn wrote in her Book of Hours, which is now kept at Hever Castle where she lived, "Le temps viendra" ~ which I always loved. I think if I ever have a child I'll ask my (very clever) father to make him or her a special clock and carve that somewhere about it

Beautiful clocks!
I have lovely memories of dancing 'round the kitchen table and through the house with my sisters, as we were young girls! Maybe these are the reminders to dance for joy in the passing of time?
It is a very beautiful clock, Michel. You're so right when you say "All beings and things are interesting." You seem to make it even more so.
I adore clocks! I have since I was a child. No matter where I go, I have to have a watch or clock around... something about time that is soothing

Maybe it was symbolism of the era. Afterall it was chic to have homosexual relations in several of the larger cities, like Paris, during the early 1900s. So knows, eh?
I love clocks. That is a really gorgeous work of art you have posted up there. Two women, one with a hood on, dancing joyously? I think perhaps it is the reunion of Persephone and Demeter (the latter who is oft depicted wearing a cape or hood while in search of her daughter in Hades). What do you think?
Clementine
I wonder if there is a story or legend behind those two dancing women....
You should take that to the Antiques Roadshow. Have you heard of that T.V. program? That's a awesome clock. I LOVE clocks!
Oui, j'aime les horlages. Tres elegants!
I love the clocks! Gorgeous! Thank you for sharing this, and sharing a quote from your first blog. I was not a reader back then but I can appreciate your words from then to now!
maybe there is another meaning....
The dancing women: time swirls on, it does not stop, if you do not watch out, time will escape from you, you are young and then suddenly time has wirled on and you are old! Is this one explanation of the women dancing dancing to keep up with time! I love the sound of a clicking clock and the chimes. It is a comfort sound! @-}-}-
Wow Michel.. thats a special clock!
We both wrote about "time". How did that happen?
That is a beautiful clock. It looks like carved wood.
My Dad collects clocks. I counted 21 at his home.
you collect antiques as well? =)...the clock is very beautiful...i don't know..i always find dancing something very mystical and happy?...as you spin around and glide in another's arms...time quickly passes u by..as in life! ^_^
We have one coockoo clock at home. When it goes "coockoo", it is either my time to get up or go to bed. =)
We have one coockoo clock at home. When it goes "coockoo", it is either my time to get up or go to bed. =)
No, don't like clocks, Michel. My only clock is the Sun ,a pity that does not show to much hier.
Clocks are a very ingenious way of men to try to mesure and control time, sorry, man is not God but it is ok to try.
Why two women? I never try to understand art, just try to feel it, two ladies feel better for me then two guys..hehe, perhaps for the guy who made it too...if he was a guy of course.Just kidding, michel.
Have a good day.
Carlo
Michel,
I think your clock is beautiful, but tell Janine please, that she keeps a very clean house also!
I see no dust there on that pretty table nor on it's decor!
I am thankful for you my friend. Your words are thought inspiring and as you could see above, many thoughts have begun in the minds of your readers. We have no dust in our minds when we keep them active this way!
I hope your time is passing doing things you love! Hugs to you,
Deb
oh yes, that is a fantastic clock!!!
I think it is the interaction of opposites that makes for the fluctuation of life and the ability to mark the passage of time.
Just like the swinging of a pendulum on the Grandfather clock, back and forth, the dancers push and pull, the hood and no hood, the tick and tock sound. These opposites distinguish a fluctuation of all things!
Did that make sense? Theclock is beautiful and shows charecter!
Great blog!!!

both knightingale and carlo have hit on the interpretations that apply to this clock - i would like to see a more detail shot of the women - most certainly these two women at their various stages of life represent the passage of time and certainly the craftsman was more interested in fashioning women to represent the natural flow and swirl of time than men - perhaps we can also read that no matter what age we are we should continue to dance the days away - I love the sinuosness & sensuality of art noveau - however - I hate the ticking of clocks like the dripping of taps 88888888
et il faut que je parle en englais pour un moment: thank you so very much for all your comments. i've noticed with all my philosophical thoughts and stories that you interpret them in ways more wonderful than anything i ever imagined! thank you for teaching me so very much from my own words. i continue to be amazed at what you see in my stories. they make me wonder what i truly meant when i was writing them and also help me want to be more careful and think more about the meanings of what is in my mind. often you have insights that are quite incredible and i am left gasping. i cannot thank you enough. quand vous avez dit que vous parlez/commentez trop, c'etait le premier fois que je n'etais pas de tout d'accord avec vous. votre mots et votre penses me donne tel d'espoir, la joie, they teach me so much. about things but about life and humanity too.
beautiful clock... interesting observation about generations perhaps... I'd look at it as though I, myself were moving through time... hopefully, naive to wise! thanks for your comment.
BOO~!

Congratulations to all the family on the birth of a new member - I thought I was doing well with 7 grandchildren and two greatgrand children but I don't think I'll ever have 12 ( unless my youngest son suprises us all ) The best thing about grandchildren is that you can send them home when you've had enough
