  • Travaux
    d ' automne
    .

    Works in the autumn .

The time is come to dig the vegetable garden . This year I have emptied the hole containing the compost ( rests of the kitchen , cut grass of the lawn , dead leaves ) . It haven't been emptied for 8 years . The compost was well done , very black . I have carried off 27 barrows of it and spread it in the garden . Then I cover up it in the ground . Here is a good work done . We have to make restitution to the soil of what we borrowed from it to etablish a good balance . Shouldn' t all the things be balanced in our world ?

I cover up the compost in the ground in digging . october 2002

  • More wonderful photos!!  You make me want to visit France again!

We used to just throw our vegetable scraps straight onto the garden but that compost looks fantastic!  I bet you'll get some great crops out of the garden next year!

  • I was taking care of the few plants I got here at home this weekend... thought I had no experience with plants and remembered you... I like the way relate what you do, to life. Balance should be priority...

    Have a nice day, Michel

  • I love gardening. There is a garden at my new house but it is totally overgrown. Maybe something to do in the spring???

  • It looks like hard work for you ! has if gone cold in France as it has done here in the last few days .

The person I put you as yesterday was the Presditent of USA -- Jed Bartlett in the tv show called WEST WING the actor Martin Sheen plays him

  • ...whew, lot of work there, Michel, 27 barrows!!! Love your photos. Your garden is so neat and tidy, you are a good gardener, considerate in all ways. Gardening is such a rewarding task in doing God's work in the vitality of fresh air.
...yes, balance in all things is an ideal worth pursuing. The gift of abundance must be restored to continue. MuSe

  • sounds like a lot of work, but very rewarding and 'fruitful' work...

  • fantastic!!! we have just started our compost this year! yours looks wonderful, and i imagine that your garden will certainly produce wonderful things for you next year!!! we should always try to return to our earth some of the goodness that she gives us!

  • Oui, mon ami, vie devrait avoir l'équilibre(le solde). En fait, la vie l'exige.

  • That is some great looking compost. I see now why your garden looks so magical.

  • Vous êtes un gardner dédié. J'aime votre chapeau et votre sourire! (I hope that translates as "smile!" )

  • I can almost smell it form here: earth with a fresh awakening!

  • You work so lovingly at your gardening my friend. It amazes me that you can be so dedicated and yet a great husband and grandfather.  Me and Carlo have to give up our gardens soon to move to a tiny flat....so we'll at least get to visit yours online.

  • I would love to have a garden.. even a small indoor one.. something to have real live plants in to make the house happy I love those pictures!!

  • 27 barrows!!!! That's amazing. Your family is rich in the black gold! I make my compost the lazy way... dumping everything into a bin and allowing it to "cook" without further human intervention.

I think you had better prepare for "The Attack of the Giant Turnip"(coming next summer, to a garden plot near you.)

And yes... balance is the goal.

    Much, much aloha.
    Linda

  • How I wish things in the world were that balanced!  Too bad it isn't the case.

  • I love the vegetable gardens of France.  Over here far fewer people bother.  When I move house next time I'm going to make sure I have a larger gardens.  But how will I stop the slugs eating my babies?  Tom

  • i love getting outside and playing in the dirt.  looks like you do, too~!

  • What BEAUTIFUL compost!  I love making compost!  Talk about balance and recycle, that is the magic of compost.  Yes, I agree, we must give back to the land.

    clementine

  • Good for you !!  After 8 years, I imagine it was almost completely back to dirt.  Your garden looks like you'll have quite a crop.

  • Ooooo fun fun fun, I love playing in the dirt!!

    Hollie

  • That compost is a real treasure to the hard-working soil.  I think the concept of giving back to the earth is such a wonderful one.  It's a logical and natural thing to do!!

  • If more people understood that we must put back in the earth that which we use...we would perhaps have a world for our grandchildren and there children to enjoy.  We destroy so much here in the states!

  • Thats beautiful compost! Dad just covers his in trunip greens for the winter and then plows them under in spring and they give the soil iron. Of course he adds compost to it as well. He grows the most wonderful asparagus. YUM my favorite. I love to garden but hate the bugs and the misquitoes. Then of course you have to know the good bugs from the bad ones and organic is the only way to grow your food. You have to love it as it is very hard work tho quite rewarding.

  • i was just curious michel. as usual. hehe... anyways, i'm proud to say that i love your culture. almost everything about france. just waiting for the moment when i can enjoy the experience and embrace it.

  • Oh, that compost looks awesome. I can just imagine your soil was delighted to receive the boost.

  • The flowers don't grown from diamonds but they grow from the manure.

    Carlo

  • Michel, working in the garden in your sweater?!!? *scratching my head*.  Wasn't it hot?

  • Gees I wish I could speak French!!

Looks like a lot of work but what a cool garden!!  Is it cold there right now?  We had 79 F today.  Very warm for this time of year.  Usually it is raining. I am on the West Coast of the U.S., Washington state.

  • Valuable hard work Michel.

  • Yes, Balance is good.  Lovely layout for your garden..... wish I had one.

  • i love fall!  yes, all the things in the world should definately be balanced!  that would make everything much simpler!

  • Look at that handsome hard working man! Good compost. 8 years is a long time! I can't believe you are digging it up already. Has it been that long?

  • Again great pictures and you make gardening look reallty enjoyable   Ron

  • What a beautiful garden area you have. The compost looks wonderful and it certainly does improve the soil. I usually do mine in a large compost box, but this year tried digging trenches between the rows of veggies and burying all of my table scraps, etc. Think I will go back to the old way next spring.

It is hard work, but every bite of a juicy, sun ripened, warm, red tomato eaten fresh from the garden makes it all worthwhile. Have a great weekend, Michel!

  • *sigh* I miss gardening.  even though I always put it off when it was there to do.  autumn is so wonderful.......

  • J'aime les photos.  Tu as fait beaucoup de travail.

  • Our gardens bring such pleasure in every season.  They can teach us much.  Soon your garden will be at rest for the winter.  Here, where I live in California, many plants continue to grow and bloom during the winter season.  Your compost is beautiful.

  •  Those are great pics. Your compost looks very rich. Make a garden grow good. And yes, everything should be balanced.

  • Salut.  J'aime cette place, ici - c'est paisible and tranquille.  Vous etes tres sage.  Moi, je sais que les plantes and jardins me detestent! Hehe...toutes mes plantes perient!

  • a very loving effort .. and rewarding .. yes .

    and Beautiful ..

    *you*

  • Looks like very hard work!

  • Bonjour encore!

  • Have you tried using a wormery for compost - it is very good and quicker than 8 years. Your garden looks great, mine does too but I have a gardener now it is too much for me now that my husband has died - it was his pride and joy so I want to keep it looking nice

  • Du terreau vieux de 8 ans? Wow!
    Quelle richesse!

    -- Lise

"Perhaps the word for the feeling I mean is serenity,
    a high acceptance, a recognition
that Heracleitus's doctrine of eternal flow
    is a great truth,
and while we may not, in ourselves,
    find the moment when
the one element changes into the other,
    that moment will come
and the consciousness of its inevitability
may give us courage in adversity,
    and balance in good fortune."
    -- Robertson Davies

  • What a great looking garden and beautiful dirt.  You must have very happy plants.  Looks like they'd get plenty of sun too.  How's your back with all this work?

  • It is time for composting on my side of the earth also!

  • Autumn is beautiful, the colors of this season are always eye catching.

To clarify what I wrote on my site:

It is sad that someone has thought that to kill all these people would serve some greater purpose. I can't see how killing some many people for any cause what so ever could be justified. Who or what gives anyone the right to take some one else's life. It is one thing to take your own, but to take some one elses, and to deny them the right to the rest of their life, is NOT something that anyone is entitled to.
The above was to let those that have lost someone in Bali know and hopefully give some comfort to the fact that the person has been able to touch people's lives during the time that they were alive. It is not fair and extremely tragic that they were taken before they would have wished to have left. But they would want their loved ones who are still alive to remember them as they were alive. Happy, full of life and someone that was very much a part of this world. Remember the great and wonderful things that they were able to achieve before they were unfairly taken from us.

  • It looks like you have a lovely big garden....and what wonderful compost as well!  8 years old!  Fantastic.

  • OH WHAT A GOOD THING YOU DID FOR YOUR GARDEN, YOU WILL HAVE A GOOD CROP NEXT YEAR FOR SURE..

  • you make me wish my hands were dirtier, full of earth and life.

  • OH wow with 27 barrow full you will have a most wonderful garden.  Want to come and do my garden for me now??? lol  I bet the things that come from your garden are just the most delicious.  It must be so with all the love and hard work you put into it!  Wonderful pictures!  Thanks for sharing.  I just love the starting of your garden.  Have a great day and a wonderful tomorrow Michel to both you and yours! ! !  Much love and hugs! ! ! !

  • I should be cleaning up our garden.  I am slow in taking care of such things...

  • You make yard work look pleasant!  You seem to have a wonderful fulfilling life and I am so happy for you!  I hope to one day be as content and happy as you.

  •  answer to MelsWorld : My dear Mel , I have also my worries with my big family but when I am in my garden I always am happy . Like Voltaire says in " Candide " : Cultivons notre jardin .( work in  our garden ) .

  • Very rich looking compost you got there, we compost and the city picks it up but I need to start my own I think

  • Yes, Michel, I read French well.  I have almost lost the ability to speak or write it, as I have not practiced in a long time.

  • looks like a lot of work, but the garden will be looking great...Hope you get lots of veggies..

    take care,

    rubymoon

  • Have a wonderful week Michel!!!

  • My Garden has gone to bed for the winter as well.  I have a compost pile that I'm "cooking" but it's not quite ready to go on the garden I don't think.  Great photos.  You look just like the gardeners around here.

  • We have Mission Week here too, yesterday was Mission Sunday with special readings at Mass, but One World Week is an ecumenical thing. Tell me do you hold the record for the most visited blog on Xanga ? Perhaps there should be some sort of an award for numbers reading a site

  • What great pictures! You look very happy and content working with the earth!

  • everytime i come to your page...you renew my faith! work towards the life you dream of *winkz*

  • PS, YOU HAVE A KIND  FACE AND , I SEE  WISDOM IN YOUR EYE,S AND THE LOVE OF GOD THERE ALSO. FANCY

  • Someone called compost "black gold" because it is so rich. You will have a bounty next year!

  • Yes, there needs to be balance... bit itsn't it in the human nature to have things out of balance and to strive a lifelong battle to get everything in balance???

Or is it in our perception????

    8 year-compost. That's real good one.

I empty my compost thing each year, get out the good soil and redo it with what's left over and new stuff. So I get all those worms and other bugs straight into it again....
