Le plaisir de cueillir des pommes par un bel après-midi de Septembre n’ a d’égal que la cueillette des cerises en Juin. Dans les deux cas vous vous retrouvez dans les branches et les feuilles, caressé par une brise légère, monté sur un grand escabeau marin , tout à fait au sommet , étirant votre corps , tenant une branche et un seau d’une main et essayant de cueillir les plus belles pommes avec l’ autre main .  Vous vous sentez des ailes et  vous êtes surpris de cette aisance retrouvée  en l’ air alors que sur la terre la marche devient pénible , et vous vous réjouissez d’être capable de pouvoir encore faire cela comme autrefois.

The fun to pick apples in a sunny afternoon of September can be compared only to the picking of the cherries in June . In both cases you find yourself among the branches and the foliage, caressed by a light breeze at the top of a big sea stepladder, stretching your body , holding a branch and a bucket with one hand and grasping with the other hand the most beautiful apples without let them fall. . Your arms become wings and you are surprised to be so eased in the air while your walking on the ground is hard now. You rejoice to retrieve yourself like such you were in the past.

 

Je suis certain que vous demandez pourquoi je dis de mon escabeau que  c’ est un escabeau de mer . Un peu d’imagination est nécessaire .  Vous comprendrez quand je vous aurai dit que cet outil remarquable date de 1970 et qu’il est désarticulé . J’ ai mis des vis d’ occasion comme articulation des deux moitiés. L’ écartement  assuré par les cordes est très variable .Le plateau du haut est tenu par des cordes aussi . Vous comprenez alors que cet escabeau est tout à fait souple et s’ adapte à tous terrains, pentes , bosses et trous . Le fait qu’il fonctionne si bien est  dû à l’ abondance ses cordes ici et là . Cela fait penser aux haubans d’un voilier.  Osciller sur ce grand truc souple vous donne l’impression d’être en mer en haut d’un mât .

Comme vous le voyez , cueillir des pommes devient un art poétique  et une application des lois de la gravitation universelle . N’ ‘est ce pas en regardant une pomme tomber alors qu’il était assis contre un pommier que Newton découvrit cette loi ?

I am sure that you are asking why I call my stepladder , a sea stepladder. A wee bit of imagination is asked . You will understand when I tell you that this remarkable tool has been made in 1970 and it is completely disarticulated . I used screw to repair the articulation of the two half parts.. The separation of the two halves is controlled by ropes and is random variable. The plateau at the top is also maintained by ropes . So you understand this quite  flexible stepladder is adapting to all grounds, slopes , bumps,holes . . And if this  works so well because of the abundance of ropes here and there. This makes us thinks to the shrouds of a sailboat. Oscillate at the top of this high thing, gives the impression to be at sea at the top of a mast;

As you see picking the apples becomes an poetical art and a scientist application of the law of the universal gravitation . Is not in watching an apple fall while he was sat under an apple tree Newton found this law?

Après avoir récolté les  fruits du pommier ci-dessus nous avons continue hier avec un second pommier moins vieux ( 27 ans seulement ) appartenant à un autre groupe : les calvilles rouges . Cette variété de pommes est très ancienne et est connue dans l’ histoire de France depuis le XVII siècle – sous le règne de Louis XIII.

 

After harvesting the fruits of the apple tree above we continued yesterday with a younger apple tree (27 years only) belonging to another Group: red calvilles apples. This apple variety is very old and is known in the history of France since the seventeenth century -under the reign of Louis XIII.

 

Ah : les belles pommes rouges ! abondantes et délicieuses . On ne peut pas résister à en croquer une fraichement cueillie de l’ arbre , avec sa belle  robe seulement lavée par les pluies et rougie par le soleil .. Non seulement c’est un délice mais on peut mesurer aussi le temps comme disait Zakiah . Hé ! manger des pommes du XIiime siècle . Quel patrimoine !

 Ah! the beautiful red apples! abundant and delicious. We cannot resist biting into one of them freshly picked from the tree, with her ​​beautiful dress only washed by rain and reddened by the sun ..  Quand la récolte est faite Janine rentre le tout à la maison avec la brouette . les pommes seront triées  et serviront comme dessert , ou  deviendront compote ou tranches cuites à la poêle ( avec ou sans rhum ) , et tartes bien sûr. Nous pouvons  être reconnaissants devant une telle générosité .  

 

When all  is harvested Janine carry the all to   home with the wheelbarrow. The apples will be  sorted and used as a dessert, or become applesauce or slices cooked in a pan (with or without rum)  and pies of course. We can be grateful to such generosity.

 Dans l’ entrée précédente j’ évoquais les anniversaires d’une mère et de ses deux enfants le même mois et même le même jour . C’ était le 12 Août .

 Mais durant ce mois d’ Août dans la  maison de mon fils Jean-Baptiste  située dans un village non loin d’Amiens on a célébré deux  anniversaires , celui des jumeaux, bien connus sur Xanga : Raphaël et Yris  . Ils ont eu deux ans le 24 Août dernier .  

In the previous entry  I mentioned the birthdays of a mother and her two children the same month and even the same day. It was on August 12th
But during this month, in my son Jean-Baptiste‘s house in a village not too far from Amiens we celebrated the  birthdays of the twins well known in Xangaland : Raphael and Yris. It was their second birthday last August 24th

 

 

 1 minute before to hit the two years (the number two is at the basis of the candle lighted  on the cake). On the left Raphael and his mother Melody and on the right Yris with her father Jean- Baptiste

  It is  time . Raphael and Yris take their breath to blow out the candles . By the way  do not you find strange we blow out the candles which were  just lit ?    C ' est l' heure , Raphaël et Yris prennent leur respiration pour souffler les bougies . Au fait, ne trouvez pas un peu étrange d' éteindre des bougies qu' on vient d' allumer ?

It has been hard for Raphael to blow  this darn candle .Maybe he was blowing his nose to  or again he did not want to blow out the beautiful canndle .
Manon and Antoine joined the group so that the family was gathered

Il a été difficile pour Raphël d 'éteindre sa bougie . Peut - être soufflait -il vers son nez  ou peut - être encore ne voulait -il pas l' éteindre ? Manon et Antoine sont venus  se joindre au groupe et de la sorte la famille est complète .

Et puisqu’ on en est aux anniversaires :  le 19 Juillet on célébrait l’ anniversaire de la grande sœur Manon ( 14 ans ). Photo ci-dessous : Manon avec les jumeaux et ses grands-parents  

Et le 30 Juillet le père de ces quatre enfants : Manon, Antoine , Raphaël et Yris , Jean – Baptiste célébrait le 30 Juillet ses 40 ans ! Un bel âge qui fait rêver.

And since we speak of birthdays , in last July 19th  we celebrated Manon's birthday ( 14 yo ). On the picture above Manon with the twins and her grandparents.

And on July 30th her father Jean-Baptiste hit 40 year old on July 30 .  A beautiful age, which makes dream.

Et pour continuer notre voyage dans le temps le 30 août dernier  nous étions avec ma belle sœur Michèle et son mari Jacques qui célébraient leur cinquante ans de mariage. Une belle fête . Sur la photo ci-dessous ,l' heureux couple avec enfants et petits enfants.

And to continue our trip through the time , last August 30th  we were with my my sister in law named Michele and her husband Jacques  who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary . Beautiful feast !  ( photo above : the happy couple with children and grandchildren )

Cette année nous n' avons pas voyagé durant l' été mais cela a été remplacé par un tourbillon de joyeux événement . Nous en sommes reconnaisants
This year we did not travel in summer but this  was replaced by a whirlwind of joyous gatherings .  We are grateful .

Voyage dans le temps

 Comme je disais ci-dessus nous n’ avons pas voyagé cet été mais nous avons été pris par un  joyeux tourbillon d’ anniversaires . Cela nous a fait voyager dans le temps . Il s’ en est écoulé du temps entre la naissance des jumeaux il y a deux ans , la naissance de Manon il ya 14 ans , celle de son père Jean – Baptiste il ya quarante ans , le mariage de ma belle sœur il y a 50 ans ( et le nôtre il y a 53 ans ).

 Tous ces joyeuses célébrations nous ont fait voyager dans le temps . Qui dit voyage dit moyen de transport ; Puisque nous en sommes à remonter le temps j’ ai retrouvé une photo de 1957 où je m’ apprêtais à chevaucher…me chère motocyclette , une Terrot ( marque française qui a disparu depuis ) . J’ ai beaucoup roulé avec cette belle machine , été comme hiver ;. Et c’ est au cours d’un de ses voyages que j’ ai connu Janine ..

 Les voyages dans le temps permettent non seulement de redécouvrir ce qu’on croyait disparu mais de  retrouver de façon plus intense les choses   et  ceux que l’ on aime ou que l'on a aimés.

 Like I said above we have not traveled this summer but we were caught by a joyous whirlwind of birthdays. They made us travel through time. So many years flowed  time between the birth of twins two years ago, the birth of Manon 14 years ago, his father Jean - Baptiste forty years ago, the marriage of my sister in law 50 years ago  (and the ours , 53 years).

  All these joyous celebrations made ​​us travel through time. Speaking of travel leads to speak of  conveyance; Since we're back in time I have found a picture from 1957 .This is me  getting ready to ride ... my dear motorcycle, Terrot (French brand that has since disappeared). I made a lot of running with this beautiful machine, summer and winter. And it is during one of these trips that I have known Janine ..

  The time travel can not only discover what is thought to be extinct but to rediscover it more intensely and so for those that we love or that we loved.

Le 12 Août dernier notre fille Isabelle qui vit en Angleterre fêtait son anniversaire chez nous à Amiens . Le même jour est aussi l' anniversaire de sa fille Sarah . Et pour son fils Joe l' anniversaire est le 25 Août. Les trois anniversaires ont été célébrés en même temps.

Last August 12 our daughter Isabelle who lives in England  celebrated her birthday  at our home in Amiens.  The same day is also her daughter Sarah's birthday  . And for his son Joe the birthday is on August 25 . So the three of them has been combined in the same celebration.

En essayant aujourd’hiui de ranger mon bureau , j’ ai retrouvé le cahier de chansons de mon grand –père . Son nom François Fauquet presque effacé par le temps est écrit sur la couverture et son village, Réty .  Il est né en 1875 et en lisant le texte des chansons on peut penser que ce cahier a été commencé autour de 1895

 

 

In trying today the decluttering  my personal office I found in a bookcase the notebook of my grandfather’s songs.  His name François Fauquet and his village Rety ( northern France ) are on the cover half wiped by the time . He is born on 1875 and at reading text of the songs we may assume he started this notebook of songs  around 1895

 

 

Voici le cahier ouvert. Vous voyez l” écriture d’un home qui était un artisan à la fin du XIXème siècle . Je voudrais être capable de faire  aussi bien aujourd’hui. Pas de perte de place dans les pages. Voyez, la chanson que j’ ai choisie intitulée «  l’étoile d’ amour » , elle commence en bas de la page gauche pour se continuer sur la page de droite . Le papier était précieux  et cher. A cette époque l’unique moyen d’apprendre et de transmettre les chansons était le papier imprimé ou écrit à la main. Sur les marchés de plein air des marchands de partitions les jouaient et chantaient. Ensuite beaucoup de gens copiaient les paroles dans leur cahier de chansons , la musique étant simplement mémorisée.

 

Here is the notebook open .You see the handwriting of a man who was a  craftman at the end of the XIX century. I would want today to be able to do  so well. Not any space is lost in the pages . See, the song I chose , titled "l'étoile d'amour " ( the love star) starts at the low part of the left page to continue on the page on the right .  Paper was precious . At this time the only one way to learn and transmit the songs was the paper printed or handwritten. On the open markets sellers of partitions played and sung them.. Then, many people copied the words on their notebooks of songs , the music being simply memorized

Mon grand –père aimait chanter bien que je n’ aie pas de souvenirs précis sauf à l’ église de son village où il était chantre. Mon père et ma mère étaient toujours sollicités pour chanter une ou plusieurs chansons lors des rassemblements familiaux . J’ ai aussi le cahier de chansons de mon père .
Aux pages que j’ ai scannées , se trouve une des chansons que ma mère chantait dans les années 30 et 40 : «  l’ étoile d’ amour «  datant de 1899 . ( musique de Delmet, parole de Charles Fallot ) . Voici donc une chanson que mon grand –père chantait , que mes parents chantaient et que je je fredonne encore .

 

My grandfather loved singing but I have no many memories of this  excepted from at the church of his village where he was a the cantor . My father and my mother always were asked to sing one or some songs during familial gatherings . And I have also the notebook of my father’s songs . On the pages I have scanned it is one of the songs my mother sung in the years 30"'s and 40's :"l' étoile d'amour " ( the love star), written in 1899 (music by Delmet , words by Charles Fallot ). So, this is a song sung by my grandfather, then by my parents and me,yet.

• La maison de François.

  Deux fois par ans ( temps de la Toussaint et des Rameaux ) depuis 1961 Janine et moi allons visiter et fleurir les tombes de toute le famille des deux côtés.
  C’ est ainsi que nous allons à Réty , village de la région de Boulogne sur mer à 150 km d’ Amiens(figurant sur la couverture du cahier de chansons ) . Voici l’ entrée du village avec sa massive église qui cache des merveilles d’ architecture gothique à l’ intérieur .

  Twice per year( around All Saints ‘Day ands Palm Day ) since 1961 , Janine and I go to visit the family graves of the two sides .
It is why we go to Réty , village of the area of Boulogne-sur- Mer  far 150 km from Amiens . This name is written on the cover of the songs book.  Here is above the entrance of the village with its massive church which hides wonders of gothic architecture inside .

 

Au cimetière de Réty nous visitons deux tombes. En face, de l’ autre côté de la route se trouve la maison de mon grand-père François Fauquet . A chaque fois je la regarde , et en 2010 je pris une photo . Elle n’ a pas changé excepté la fenêtre et la porte qui ont été remplacées . Le propriétaire évidemment a changé.

Qui était François ? D’après ce que je sais  François né en 1875 en Artois probablement  arriva à Réty et était artisan charron. Il fabriquait des roues et charrettes dans son atelier qu’on voit à droite de la photo . Je me souviens encore des machines à la fin des années 30. Il s’était marié avec Virginie  aux alentours de 1900 . En 1902 il eut un fils Emile( mon père ) et en 1903 une fille Maria . Quelques années plus tard il perdit sa femme puis se remaria avec Marie . Il eut encore deux enfants Gaston né en 1912 et puis Marcelle .
Plus tard les chevaux étant remplacés par les tracteurs il alla travailler à l ‘ usine métallurgique voisine comme modeleur . Il allait à vélo et le soir il cultivait son grand jardin.
Avant la guerre  il eut encore la tristesse de perdre  de la tuberculose sa fille Marcelle qui était mariée et avait un enfant

At the Réty cemetery we visit two graves . At the opposite across the road is standing my grandfather François Fauquet’s house . Every time I look at it and in 2010  I took a photo of the front. There was no major changes ( excepted the door and the windows that have been replaced ).

  Who was François ? According what I know François is born in 1875 probably in Artois ( North of France ) and came in the next area of Boulogne –sur –mer in that village of Réty . He was a craftsman, a  wheelwright . He made wheels and  carts in his workshop which can be seen at the right of the picture above . I remember the machines in it in the years 30’s .
He married Virginie around 1900 .In 1902 he got a son Emile( my father) and in 1903 a daughter Maria .Some years later he lost his wife then he married again Marie .He got two children yet , Gaston in 1912 and Marcelle .
 Later the horses being progressively replaced by tractors he was hired to a metallurgic factory no far from Rety like a pattern maker. He went with his bike  and at night he grew his large garden .
Before the war II he crossed again a trial in losing from tuberculosis his daughter Marcelle who was married recently and had a child .

 

 

La maison était perchée comme un nid d’aigle au somment d’un versant de vallée et  François avait une vision d’ aigle . De sa maison il pouvait lire l’ heure à l’ horloge de la mairie situé de l’ autre côté de la vallée . ( sur la photo du village ci- dessous la marie – école est un bâtiment blanc à droite ) . Il voyait aussi ce qui se passait dans la ferme située plus bas où j’ allais souvent . Combien de moissons ? C’ était un régal de voir la navette des charrettes chargées de bottes de blés , de voir les chevaux courir boire à l’ abreuvoir après le travail..

The house is perched like an eagle nest at the top of a side of valley and François had a eagle sight . From his house he was able to know what time it was at watching the clock of the town hall- schools on the other side of the valley . ( on the picture of the village above the town hall – school , the white building on the right ). He saw also what happened in the farm located lower , where I often was. How many harvest ? It was a delight to see the shuttle of the carts loaded with bundles of wheat, to see the horses rushing after work to the watering place in stones .

A pertir d’un vieux cahier de chansons portant sur la couverture «  François Fauquet, Réty «  se réveillent un tas de souvenirs que j’ai abrégés ici . Ces souvenirs me sont précieux. Mais il me manque la plupart des évènements d’ avant 1930 , les papiers de famille ayant été perdus  et mon père étant mort jeune en 1956 . J’ avoue que j’ aurais aimé  connaître quelque chose sur  la vie de ma grand-mère Virginie

So starting from the writing « François Fauquet, Réty » on the cover of a songs notebook makes memories awake which I make short here . those memories are precious for me . But most of the events before 1930 are missing , the family paper  lost and my father being deceased young in 1956. I confess I would have liked to know  something about my grandmother Virginie ‘ s life.

Samedi 9 Août dernier vers la fin de l' après-midi, deux de nos filles ,Véronique et Isabelle ( les sœurs de la Duchesse naturellement ) sont rentrées de vacances avec la ferme intention de passer quelques jours chez nous avec l' idée bien arrêtée de repeindre le plafond de la cuisine dans tout son éclat . Nous avons apprécié leur gentillesse .
Sur la photo ci - dessous les petits enfant sont absents , ils jouaient ans les chambre à l' étage.

 Last Saturday, August 9th,  at the end of the day two daughters , Veronique and Isabelle ( Duchess ‘ s sisters of course ) , came back  home from vacation with the intention to stay during some days with the main goal to paint the kitchen ceiling . We have appreciated their kindness.. On the pictures the grandchildren are not there : they are playing in the rooms upstairs

 

Pendant l' après-midi du Dimanche 10 août les deux sœurs arrachèrent le papier peint qui devait être changé et lavèrent le plafond . Cela a été fait avec soin et rapidement .dans une ambiance de rires et de plaisanteries.

On Sunday  10th of August  in the afternoon the two sisters took off the wall paper and washed the ceiling .  This has be done  carefully and quickly with a lot of laughters and jokes!

and in a very styled attitude! Isabelle looks like a greek statue!!  ..........................et avec des attitudes stylées . Isabelle ne ressemble-t-elle pas à une statue grecque?

And on Sunday night the grandchilderen offered to us a show really artistic!....... et au soir du Dimanche les petits-enfants nous offrirent un spectacle réellement artistique.

Lundi 11 Aout était le jour de la mise en peinture . Deux couches, une le matin et une le soir . Travail bien fait et c'était un premier plafond !.
Et entre les deux couches ces dames sont allées patiner en ville et aussi cueillir de haricots au jardin qu 'elles ont ensuite  préparés

Monday, August 11th was painting Day. Two coats . The work has been well done . And it was their first ceiling!   

Between the two coats , those ladies went in town for ice skating and also in the veggie garden to pick green beans they prepared with Janine, Antoine and Joe.

 

Et plus tard dans la nuit un étrange spectacle pouvait être vu dans la cuisine . Une sorte de fantôme monté sur un escabeau raccrochait la lampe au plafond et refaisait les connexions, éclairé par deux spots lumineux de téléphone portable lesquels se réfléchissaient sur le plafond lisse comme miroir. L'art se rencontre n' importe où. Mais au fait suis-je réellement une œuvre d'art?

And later in the deep night a strange show could be seen  in the kitchen. A kind of ghost on a stepladder hung again the lampe at the ceiling and putting on the electric connections , lightened by spots of light which were  reflected on the shining ceiling . The art is anywhere . By the way,  am I really a work of art ?

Ma fille aînée Carole, la duchesse qui n'a pas peur de rien a fait un tour, à cheval, dans les montagnes du Jura pendant quatre jours en Juillet. Elle était avec d'autres cavaliers  et parmi eux, son Chevalier servant . Quatre jours à la montagne, à travers les nuages, sous la pluie; et aussi des moments  ensoleillées. Cette montagne c’était le Jura qui s'étend en France et en  Suisse. Les cavaliers n’ allaient pas naturellement  vers  les plus hauts sommets  mais dans une zone formées de plis avec crêts et vaux  selon la roche: calcaire ou argile,  et coupée par de profondes vallées appelées cluses

Les plis de la mantagne sont fait de différents terrains calcaires et marneux , très boisés
 The folds of the mountain are made of limestone and clay ,  much covered with forests .

 

my oldest daughter Carole , the Duchesse who has  not fear of nothing  made a ride,  horseback, in the Jura mountains  during four days in July  . She was with other riders and among them, her Knight . Four days in the mountain ,  through the cloud; under the showers ; and also some sunny times. This mountain was the Jura that stretches in France and Switzerland. The riders were not at the highest sommits of course  but in an area looking like folds with up and downs  determined according the rock : limestone or clay and crossed by deep valleys called cluses

 

 

Le Jura est très intéressant ,pour sa géologie. Les roches et les fossiles trouvés ici ont été utilisés comme une échelle de période géologique pour l'Europe et le monde ( le Jurassique ), et aussi pour appeler les systèmes de roches semblables avec les mêmes fossiles  avec le nom jurassique aussi; C'est dans les roches jurassiques que les restes de dinosaures ont été trouvés

The rocks and the fossils found here have been used as a geological period scale for Europe and the world ( Jurassic period ) and also to call rocks and similar fossil system with the name Jurassic too; This is in the Jurassic rocks the rests of the dinosaurs has been found

Carole was admiring the diversity of the landscapes , the abundance of the forests , the cliffs and the deep valleys  but also the cheese and wine of Jura which they enjoyed at the place where they have to pass the night with  the horses too . The place had a part of very olf building.

 I think that all of  this gives sensations deeply printed in your soul that we cannot imagine

Pendant quelques jours, nous avons trois petits-enfants à la maison. Apparemment, ils sont toujours heureux d'être là. Ils aiment beaucoup leur grand-mère qui fait tout ce qu'ils demandent. Alors cette fois leur plaisir est d'aller à la patinoire. La plus âgée Manon (14) y est allée déjà une fois et hier elle est retournée à la patinoire avec son frère Antoine et sa cousine Clémentine, avec la présence de la Grand-Mère Janine. Cette  dernière a pris quelques photos intéressantes à interpréter  sur le plan du  comportement ..

La photo ci-dessus montre le trio qui vient prudemment presque avec crainte longeant le mur .( de gauche à droite Antoine, Clémentine et Manon )

 

 

For a few days we have three grandchildren at home. Apparently they still are pleased to be there . They love a lot their grandmother who does all they ask. So this time their pleasure is to go to the rink. The oldest Manon ( 14 ) went there already once  and yesterday she returned to the rink   with her brother Antoine and her cousin Clementine , with the presence of the grand mother Janine . This last took some photos interesting to interpret about the behavior..

The photo above shows the trio that comes in prudently almost with fear along   the wall . ( left to right Antoine, Clémentine and Manon)

Mardi dernier,mon cousinRené, (celui qui parle aux phoques) est venu avec sa femme Chantal pour m'aider à récolter les 5 dernières rangées de pommes de terre. Mon cousin est rapide et le travail a été fait rapidement..(voir sur la deuxième photo la façon dont il lance  sur le terrain, les  fanes et les  tubercules de pommes de terre. Il a l’ attitude d’un discobole !Quel soulagement quand nous nous sommes rencontrés au dernier pied . Travail fini! Vous pouvez voir une partie de la récolte stockée provisoirement dans un hangar

Last Tuesday my cousin René , ( the one who speaks to the seals ) came with his wife Chantal to help me to harvest the 5 last rows of potatoes. My cousin is speedy and the work has been done quickly.. See on the second picture how he launches away on the ground faded foliage and tuber of the potatoes. He has the posture of a discus thrower ? What a relief when we met each other at the last plant of potato You have a part view of the crop waiting in a shed .

Et deux jours plus tard voici ce que vous pouvez voir au même endroit: un régiment de 370 jeunes poireaux qui vont croître rapidement avec le plus grand plaisir pour faire partie de la bonne soupe de l'hiver ou du printemps prochain

Poireaux pour flamiches et fondues.

Et quatre jours plus tard j' ai ajouté 200 poireaux d 'une autre variété " les Gros jaunes du Poitou" . Cette variété est utilisée par Janine pour faire des flamiches ( tartes aux poireaux ) ou des fondues pour accompagner la viande. On voit sur la photo la différence de couleurs entre les 370 poireaux précédemment plantés et les 200 récemment plantés.

.....and four days later I add 200 other leeks of another variety : " the big yellow of Poitou" . Poitou is an area  France . This variety is used by Janine to make excellent leek pies and also fondues to accompany meat in a meal . We see on the picture the  different color between the 370 leeks previously planted and the 200 newly planted.

Pas de temps ni d 'espace à perdre, la terre doit produire . Après les poireaux j' ai semé sous voile  hier soir 6 rangs de carottes à récolter en Novembre . Elles sont appelées carottes de Colmar. Le voile protège les carottes des insectes qui viennent pondre au sommet et ensuite leurs larves entrent dans la racine.

On  n'arrête jamais!

 

No time nor space lost , the ground has to produce . After the leeks,  I sowed, yesterday night ,under veil, 6 rows of carotts to eat in November . They are called carrots of Colmar . The veil protects the carotts against insects that come lay on the top  and their larveas eat the carott!!

En juillet le temps des cerises est fini mais nous goûtons le temps des baies juteuses : groseilles rouges, framboises, groseilles à maquereau et bientôt les mûres;
Ce midi après le repas je voyais ma femme Janine qui collait des étiquettes sur des bouteilles remplies d’un liquide rouge . C’ était la dernière étape de la fabrication de la crème de cassis . Elle me dit : «  Va à la cave et tu trouveras 9 bouteilles déjà faites  et je suis en train d’en terminer 10 autreS

 In July cherry time is gone but we enjoy berry time ; redcurrants, raspberries, gooseberries and soon blackberries .

Today after the meal I saw my wife Janine who was sticking labels on  bottles filled with a red liquor. It was the last stage of the making of blackcurrants liquor called cassis . She told me: "go down to the cellar you will find   9 bottles  already made and I am finishing 10 others ".

Tandis que j’ étais à la cave je voyais une jarre en terre cuite où du cassis  était en attente macérant pour une légère fermentation. Je vis aussi une bombonne en verre avec une étiquette «  vin de cerise » , en attente, et sur la droite une récipient contenant un essai de vin de cassis . . Au premier plan dans une cocotte est un essai d ' apéritif. C’ était comme un laboratoire . La fabrication d’une bonne crème de cassis  demande une série d’opérations , une vraie chimie et beaucoup de travail. Ce n’ est  pas surprenant que des siècles ont été nécessaires pour découvrir cet élixir en Bourgogne à Dijon.

 

 

While I was  in the cellar I saw an earthenware jar where cassis was on the wait for a light fermentation. I saw also a glass carboy with a label  “ cherry wine “ on the wait and on the right another can was containing a try of new  wine  . On the foreground in the cooker it is a try of cassis appetizer!!    .   . This was like a labs .Making a good blackcurrant liquor is a true process, a true chemistry and a lot of work. Not surprising centuries have been  needed to discover this elixir in the Burgundy around Dijon.

 

  J’ ai pris aussi une photo de l’ intérieur d ‘un placard  à côté de la cuisine . C’ était( Ô merveille !) des pots de gelée de framboise 2014 et à droite ce qui restait de 2013

I took also   a photo of the inside of a cupboard next to the kitchen . It was (O wonder! )  a lot jarsof jelly of raspberry  2014 and on the right what remaining of 2013 .

 

J ‘ appelais ma femme . Elle était à la cave et quand je m’y suis rendu il y avait maintenant 19 bouteille sde crème de cassis .
Revenant dans la cuisine; je remarquai un grand bol de compote ! C' était de la compote de groseille à maquereau, un de mes desserts préférés depuis l' enfance.

 

I called my wife ;; she was in the cellar and when I went to there were now 19 bottles of blackcurrant liquor !

Coming back in the kitchen I noticed a large bowl containing a kind of compote . It was compote of gooseberries ,one of  my prefered dessert since my childhood

 

Bien! il est temps de penser à la gelée de mure. Les buissons plantés autour du potager s'annoncent riches en fruits . je crois que cette nuit je vais rêver de gelées et de liqueur . Extatique!

Well, it is time to think of the blackberrie jelly . The bushes around  the veggie garden look productive. I believe this night I am going to dream of jelly and liquor . Ecstatic!

• 1960 – 1964  la 4 CV Renault  The 4 horsepowers Renault ( the number of horsepowers in France is a an administrative word for the taxes . In the reality the power of the car is much higher . This notice is the same for the following cars )

Cette photo a été prise lendemain de notre mariage le 18 février 1961. Nous partions dire bonjour à ma grand ‘ mère . Il y avait avec nous un oncle (qui prit la photo), une tante et un cousin. . On pouvait déjà mettre du monde dans cette petite voiture d ‘ occasion que j ‘ avais achetée quelque temps plus tôt avanr de partir en Algérie. Sur cette petite voiture le moteur était à l ‘ arrière et le petit coffre à l ‘ avant !! Pour nous deux cette petite auto suffisait largement . Et quand notre premier enfant Carole naquit en 1962 c ‘ était encore facile . Pas de problèmes .

This picture was taken the tomorrow of our wedding on the 18 february 1961 . We started to say hello to my grand mother . There were with us an uncle ( who took the picture ) , an aunt and a cousin . We could locate some people in that small used car that I had bought a few months before in 1960 gefore to go to Algeria . This small car had the motor on the back and the boot ( trunk ) was in front . For both Janine and me this car was largely sufficient . And when our first child Carole was born in 1962, it was easy yet . No problem !

 

• 1964 – 1969  La Panhard PL 17        5 CV

Notre second enfant était annoncé pour Décembre 1964 . Nous avions à acheter une voiture plus grande : une Panhard PL  17 neuve . cette voiture n ‘ avait pas de sièges séparés du tout , même devant . I y avait deux banquettes et le levier des vitesses était au tableau de bord .  C ‘ était une voiture à traction avant avec un moteur flat- twins bi- cylindre rfroidi par air . Très en avavce sur son temps . Elle était rapide , confortable et il y avait de la place . Nous avons transporté dans cette voiture Carole , Thierry né en 1964 , Véronique née en 1966 et Pierre né en Avril 1968 . Nous étions trois devant et trois derrière , sans oublié le chien arrivé en 1966 . Mais nous avions atteint les limites de capacité .

Our second child was announced for December 1964 . We had to buy a much larger car : a Panhard P L 17 brand new . This car had not separated seats at all even in the front . There were two ” banchs ” and the lever gear was on the board . It was a car with front wheels drive with a air – cooled motor bi cylinder flat- twin . Very in advance at this time . It was speedy , comfortable and with much space . We drove with this Panhard Carole , Thierry ( born in 1964 ) Véronique ( born in 1966 ) and Pierre born in April 1968 . We were 3 in the front and 3 in the back without to forget the dog Netta  arrived in 1966  . But we had reached the limit of space

 

• 1969 – 1971 La Renault R16       ( 9 CV horsepowers but see my notice above )

Nous avons acheté une Renault R 16 neuve plus large et plus puissante que la Panhard . C ' était une Renault haut de game Nous avions plus   d ‘ aisance .Mais nous venions juste de l ‘ acheter que notre 5 ème enfant s ‘ annonçait Isabelle née le 12 Août 1971 . Nous avons revendu la Renault pour acheter une voiture réellement  adaptée aux grandes familles :

Renault R 16 decorated for a wedding . The young boy is our son Thierry .He is 6 years and half old .( he is 49, now )

 We bought a Renault R 16 brand new at the top , wider and more powerful than the Panhard . We had more space . but we had just bought that our 5 th child announced herself : Isabelle born on the 12^th of august 1971 . We had to sell the Renault to buy a car really adapted to the large families

 

• 1971 – 1983 The familial Citroën  ID 20 ( 11 CV )

Nous transportions facilement nos cinq enfants et le chien . Il y avait 6 sièges derrière .Et on mettait 9 valises sur la galerie de toit pour partir en vacance . Notre 6^ème enfant Jean – Baptiste né en 1974 avait encore sa place . Le chien se logeait où il pouvait .Cette voiture était une traction avant et en plus elle avait la célèbre suspension hydro – pneumatique Citroen . On pouvait charger , elle ne s ‘ écrasait pas . Nous avions l ‘ impression de rouler sur un coussin d ‘ air .

We carried easily our five children ( whom Isabelle ) and the dog . There were 6 seats back . And we put 9 suit cases on the roof where a roof rack .was intalled in the factory . Our 6^th child  , Jean – Baptiste born in 1974 had his place yet . The dog located where he could . This car was with front wheels drive and more , it had the famous suspension hydro – pneumatique ( oil + air ) Citroën . We can load , the car didn’ t crush on the ground . We had the impression to drive on a cushon of air . It was a pleasure to drive this car.

Après cette merveilleuse auto  nous avons encore eu 6 automobiles Citroën souvent grandes  mais la liste deviendrait fastidieuse

mais il peut -être intéressant de connaître leur prix à ces époques ( pour quelques voitures achetées neuves )

Panhard 30 Janvier 1964 : 9184 francs soit en euros actuels 1400 euros ( 1900 dollars US)

la grosse Citroën, familiale Décembre 1971: 24326 francs soit en euros actuels 3408 euros mais qui serait vendue de nos jours autour de 29000 euros

But il can be interesting to know their price at those times for some new cars  ( not used cars )

 The big famial Citroën,  Décembre 1971: 24326 francs converted in our present euros : 3708 euros (  5309  dollars ). Nowadays, this car would be sold around 29000 euros ( 34500 dollars )

 

 This gives matter to ponder on the value of the money along the time .

Ceci donne matière à réfléchir sur la valeur de la monnaie au fil du temps.

Today July 14 th is National Day in France ( known to the US under the name of Bastile Day )  . This morning a  big military parade attracted the crowd on the Champs Elysées in Paris . And it was also the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the war I in 1914. Soldiers and flags of   almost 70 countries that participated to this war were present in the parade . All fighters for freedom . And how many young men  have been killed ? Millions of them .

Aujourd'hui 14 Juillet est fête nationale en France ( connue en Amérique sous le nom de Bastille Day . Ce matin un grand défilé militaire sur les Champs Elysées à Paris a attiré une foule énorme. Et c' était aussi le 100ème anniversaire du début de la première guerre mondiale en 1914. Des soldats et les drapeaux de près de 70 pays qui participèrent à cette guerre étaient présents . Les combattants de la liberté . Et combien de de jeunes hommes ont été tués dans cette guerre ? des millions !
