                     Chez Léonard !

       At Leonardo ' s   !

   Quand nous étions en Touraine dans le cœur de la France en Juillet dernier , nous avons voulu visiter la petit château où Léonard de Vinci vécut les 3 dernières années de sa vie entre 1516 et 1519 : le château du Clos Lucé . Ce château lui avait été donné par le Roi de France François 1^er , grand admirateur de la Renaissance italienne . Ils s ' étaient rencontrés à Rome et le roi avait été complètement séduit par son génie . Le roi invita Léonard à venir vivre en France . Da Vinci accepta l 'invitation et vint en France avec ses peintures finies ou à finir .

When we were in Touraine , an area in the heart of France last July , we wanted to visit the small castle where Leonardo Da Vinci lived his last 3 years of his life between 1516 and 1519 : the castle of Clos Lucé . It was the King of France , François 1^st , a great lover of the Italian Renaissance , who gave him this castle . They met each other in Roma and the king was seduced by his genius . The king invited Leonardo to live in France . Da Vinci accepted the invitation and came in France with his paintings ended or not .

                Le château du Clos Lucé est situé à 500mètres environ du château d ' Amboise sur les bords de la Loire où le roi vivait . Léonard percevait une grosse pension annuelle et le roi lui achetait ses peintures comme La Joconde , Le St Jean - Baptiste ….Le roi mais aussi la cour admiraient et aimaient réellemnt Léonard . François 1^er n ' était jamais fatigué de l ' entendre et venait lui rendre visite presque chaque jour .depuis son château comme un ami et un voisin . Léonard payait en retour en organisant des fêtes magnifiques , très créatives .

The castle of Clos Lucé is located no far ( about 500 meters ) from the Amboise Castle on the side of the river Loire where the king lived . Leonard received a big pension per year and the king bought his paintings as La Gioconda ( Mona Lisa ), St John the Baptist and St Anne . The king but also the court loved and admired really Leonard . François the first was never tired to taste his conversation and came to visit him almost everyday like a friend and neighbour . Leonard paid back the king by organizing amazing feasts very creative .

Nous avons été très touchés de revivre un moment de l 'histoire de la France mêlée à celle de Léonard de Vinci . Nous avons vu sa chambre à coucher où il est mort à l ' âge de 67 ans , les salons ,et la …cuisine . Quelle cuisine mes amis . ! avec ses meubles rustiques et tous ses plats de cuivre ! je m 'imaginais là buvant un verre de vin chaud préparé par la cuisinière de Léonard , Mathurine .

   We have been strongly touched to live again a moment of the History of France mixed with the one of Leonardo da Vinci . We saw his bedroom where he died aged of 67 years , the lounges and …the kitchen . What a kitchen , my friends ! Rustic furnitures and many copper dishes …. I imagined myself there drinking a hot wine prepared by the Leonardo ' s cook : Mathurine .

Mais ce qui nous a frappé le plus c ' est le sous sol où se trouvent les maquettes de machines construites par IBM d ' après les dessins inventés par Léonard . Cela touche à tous les domaines ,militaires , navals , hydrauliques , mécaniques et aéronautiques . Cela va des ponts tournants , les bateaux à aubes , la vis d ' Archimède , des engins de levages des hélicoptères juqu ' aux tanks et aux mitrailleuses !!! ( malheureusement ) Naturellement ce n ' était que des dessins , des plans mais qui avaient plusieurs siècles d ' avance sur leur temps . Quant on pense que cet homme était aussi un anatomiste, un architecte , un sculpteur et un musicien .! Quel génie et aussi quel simplicité à en juger par ses pensées incrites sur les murs . Il restait humble et jugeait son œuvre bien incomplète et insuffisante pour servir l ' humanité .

But what hit the most us it ' s the basement where were staying the models of the machines built by IBM following the drawings invented by Leonardo . This is in relation with all of the fields , military , naval , hydraulic , mechanical and aeronautical inventions … From the revolving bridges , wheel - boat , Archimedean screw , lifting engines , helicopter to tanks and machine- guns ( unfortunatly ) . Of course it was only drawings , plans but they were many centuries in advance on their time . When we know that this man was also an anatomist ,an architect , a sculptor and a musician ! What a genius and also what a simplicity if we judge at reading some of his thoughts written on the walls . He remained humble and said his work was incomplete and insufficient for the welfare of the mankind .

   Peut - il y avoir plus belle image
   Que de voir cette enfant gracieuse et sage
   Arrosant fleurs cultivées ou non ?
   Pour moi ce fut une inspiration .

   Elle pense déjà , peut - on le croire ,
   Que les plantes sont êtres vivants
   Et par suite , toutes doivent boire .
   C ' est pourquoi elle verse l ' eau gaiement .

   Bien sûr , son jeune frère ,
   De même a voulu faire
   Malgré l ' encombrement .
   L ' eau lui est enchantement .

        Is there more wonderful show
        Than seeing this graceful child
        Watering flowers sown or wild .
        Inside, I felt that like a blow .

        Is she already thinking
        The plants are living beings ,
        So all of them need drinking .
        It ' s why she is watering .

        Of course, her young brother
        Wanted to do the same
        In spite of the clutter .
        For him water is game .

Up date on my previous blog about Alsacian village .

Today , 20th of August , it 's the birthday of MSB ( Marie ) . I am sure she would have loved to go in Alsace too to taste wines , beers and good meals ! Please go to englishjuls to celebrate MSB ' s birthday at the birthday party .

In the same time I use this up date to signalize it was the liviatasia ' s birthday on this week . She is a great lover of her horse Solon and practices medieval shows . She owns also a michievous rabbit .

Un Village alsacien .

An Alsacian village

                                     Texts in French then in English .

   L ' Alsace est une région de l ' Est de la France près de la frontière allemande . Elle est riche en magnifiques villages . En voici un que ma femme et moi aimons : EGUISHEIM . Nous y sommes allés en Juillet dernier pour un court voyage .

   Alsace is a region of Eastern France near the German border . There are plenty wonderful villages . Here is one of them which my wife and I love : EGUISHEIM . We went last July for a short trip .

Ce village a 12 siècle d ' histoire derrière lui . Il a conservé beaucoup de ses caractères anciens . Nous avons aimé nous promener dans ces rue étroites et pavées suivant les anciens remparts autour du centre du bourg . Lorsque on suit cette rue on revient donc au point de départ . Les yeux sont éblouis par ces vieilles maisons à colombages et encorbellements , abondamment fleuries . Il y a aussi beaucoup de caveaux de vignerons . C ' était feérique .

   There are 12 centuries of History in this village . It keeps many of its ancient features . We loved to stroll into those narrow paved streets following the ancient remparts around the borough centre . so , when you walk along this street you are sure to come back to the starting point . We were amazed by those old half-timbered houses with their corbellings , plentifully flowered .There are also many wine cellars . It was magic .

Et voici le vieux château qui a perdu son donjon et la chapelle Léon IX . Ce dernier était un pape qui vivait au début du XI ème siècle . Il est né ici en 1002 . On voit sa statue . Le grès rose des bâtiments et l ' amas de fleurs rouges forment un éclat de couleurs .

Here is the old castle which has lost its donjon and the Leon IX chapel . This last one was a pope who lived at the beginning of the XI th century . He is born here in 1002 . One sees his statue . The pink sandstone of the buildings and the amount of red flowers are a blast of colors .

La cigogne est un oiseau presque sacré en Alsace . Il est un peu son emblème . Sur l ' église d ' Eguisheim comme dans beaucoup d ' autres villages alsaciens il y a un nid de cigognes .

The stork is a bird almost sacred in Alsace . It is a little its emblem . On the church as in many other alsacian villages there is a stork nest .

A la fin de notre séjour à Eguisheim nous avons rencontré une Xangane Anne - Marie (  BBofLight ) et son mari Johann venus spécialement d ' Allemagne pour nous rencontrer . Ce fut un moment fort de notre court séjour en Alsace . Notre temps était limité mais nous avons pu déjeuner ensemble . Quelle joie !

At the end of our stay in Eguisheim we met a Xangan Anne - Marie ( BBofLight ) and her husband Johann especially come from Germany to meet us . It was the highlight of our stay . Our time was limited but we ate a good meal together . What a joy !

Jeudi dernier , chez nous , nous avions autour de la table 8 de nos petits - enfants et un de leurs amis . Ils ressemblaient à de jeunes plantes autour de cette table . Et ils avaient bon appétît .

J ' eus clairement l 'impression de voir une nouvelle génération croissant avec force . En outre les trois plus grands ( Julie , Simon et Thomas ) et la plus jeune , Clémentine , n ' étaient pas là . Les plus vieux allaient manger avec les adultes .

C ' était plaisant à voir .

On last Thursday at our home were staying around the table 8 of our grandchildren and one of their friends . They looked like young plants around that table . And they had good appetite .

I had clearly the impression to see a new generation growing with strenght . Besides the tree oldest ( Julie , Simon and Thomas ) and the youngest , Clementine were missing . The oldest were going to eat with the adults .

It was pleasant to see .

   Ma femme Janine qui est toujours enthousiaste dans les vignobles m ' a pris en photo dans un caveau en Bourgogne . Je parie que vous interrogez sur ce que je suis en train de faire . Je compare la couleur de deux vins de 2 années différentes : leur " robe " comme on dit en Français , intensité , reflets de couleurs quand vous mirez le vin en inclinant légèrement le verre en différents sens . Il faut donc une quantité suffisante de vin dans le verre mais pas trop cependant . C ' est le premier stade de la dégustation .

    Nous étions seuls dans le caveau , tranquilles ; le vigneron était occupé avec d ' autres clients au rez - de - chaussée .

Après cela vous avez à sentir l ' odeur du vin en le faisant tourner dans votre verre . Vous appréciez ou non son parfum appelé " bouquet du vin " . Inutile de dire que c ' était parfait mais différent d ' un vin à l ' autre .

   Pour terminer vous mettez le vin dans votre bouche et vous en tapissez toutes vos muqueuses et papilles pour apprécier le goût . Il y a beaucoup de mots pour décrire le goût mais c ' est une appréciation personnelle . Vous n ' êtes pas forcé d ' avaler le vin et vous pouvez le cracher dans un crachoir .pour ne pas devenir ivre . Mais comment cracher un si divin nectar ?

   Mon problème était que je n ' ai que deux mains et que j ' avais à comparer 3 vins . Voyez les 3 bouteilles sur le baril , à droite . J ' eus à recommencer le rituel pour arriver à comparer les 3 vins .

Finalement je me sentais léger , heureux , en extase . Comme je m ' étais dévoué pour déguster c ' est Janine qui conduisit pour rentrer . Elle avait bu un tout petit peu et elle aime conduire !!!

My wife Janine who always is enthusiast in the vineyards took a photo of me in a cellar in Burgundy ( France ) . I bet you ask yourself what I am doing . I compare the color of 2 wines from 2 different years : their " robe " as it is said in French , intensity , play of colors when you look at the wine at the light in slanting slightly the glass in various directions . So you have to put a sufficient quantity of wine in your glass ( not too much , of course ) . This is the first step of the tasting ..

We were alone in the cellar , quiet , because the vinegrower was at the groundfloor with other customers .

Afterwards you have to smell the fragrance of the wine in making it turn in your glass . You have to appreciate or not its perfume called " bouquet du vin " in French . Useles to say it was perfect but different from a wine to the other .

To end you put the wine into your mooth and you cover all of you mucous and taste buds to appreciate the taste . Here , there are many words to describe the taste but you have to get your own opinion . You are not forced to swallow the wine and you may throw it from your mooth in a basin in order not to become drunk . But how not to swallow such a divine nectar ?

My problem was I have only 2 hands and I had to compare three wines . You see the 3 bottles on the barrel on the right . I had to start again the ritual to succeed to compare the 3 wines .

I felt light , happy , ecstatic . As I have been devoted for the entire tasting , it ' s Janine who drove the car to go back . She likes driving and she had tasting so little !!
