Chez Léonard !
At Leonardo ' s !
When we were in Touraine , an area in the heart of France last July , we wanted to visit the small castle where Leonardo Da Vinci lived his last 3 years of his life between 1516 and 1519 : the castle of Clos Lucé . It was the King of France , François 1st , a great lover of the Italian Renaissance , who gave him this castle . They met each other in Roma and the king was seduced by his genius . The king invited Leonardo to live in France . Da Vinci accepted the invitation and came in France with his paintings ended or not .

The castle of Clos Lucé is located no far ( about 500 meters ) from the Amboise Castle on the side of the river Loire where the king lived . Leonard received a big pension per year and the king bought his paintings as La Gioconda ( Mona Lisa ), St John the Baptist and St Anne . The king but also the court loved and admired really Leonard . François the first was never tired to taste his conversation and came to visit him almost everyday like a friend and neighbour . Leonard paid back the king by organizing amazing feasts very creative .

Amboise Castle ¨Photo M .
We have been strongly touched to live again a moment of the History of France mixed with the one of Leonardo da Vinci . We saw his bedroom where he died aged of 67 years , the lounges and …the kitchen . What a kitchen , my friends ! Rustic furnitures and many copper dishes …. I imagined myself there drinking a hot wine prepared by the Leonardo ' s cook : Mathurine .

But what hit the most us it ' s the basement where were staying the models of the machines built by IBM following the drawings invented by Leonardo . This is in relation with all of the fields , military , naval , hydraulic , mechanical and aeronautical inventions … From the revolving bridges , wheel - boat , Archimedean screw , lifting engines , helicopter to tanks and machine- guns ( unfortunatly ) . Of course it was only drawings , plans but they were many centuries in advance on their time . When we know that this man was also an anatomist ,an architect , a sculptor and a musician ! What a genius and also what a simplicity if we judge at reading some of his thoughts written on the walls . He remained humble and said his work was incomplete and insufficient for the welfare of the mankind .

What an amazing man he was! Thanks for sharing those pictures. I'm not sure I'll ever be able to travel to France to see for myself.
mike
Oh amazing!!
What a wonderful place to visit.
Clara
I truly believe those who are great...are humble..for the more they know..the more they realize how little they really do know! *smilez*
You make me want to go to France so bad Michel!
That is where I got my lovely post card from
Thank you for a lovely description of the castle Leonardo was a man well before his time
Tres interessant, monsieur. Toujours!
Amboise!!!! You were there??? I am SO very jealous. I feel in love with Amboise when I first saw the moive, Ever After which was partially filmed there. I have pictures of it up on my walls. It's looks so beautiful. You are the luckiest person in the WORLD!
Still looking on the internet for French castles and manors. I was surprised at how many are for sale. I'd have to win the lottery first! There are even castles that you can vacation in. That's what I am looking into.
And to think this fine man was the illigitamate son of a peasant. His accomplishments show anyone can do the same if one puts forth the effort. I find myself not putting forth enough effort. Humbling indeed.
Beautiful photos!

What absolutely wonderful castles!
It is so nice that you could go there and share this with us!
Wonderful story.
Thank you Michel
Rosemary
Amazing pictures and detail...I have read much on Da Vinci and find him one of the greatest of men...
How wonderful for you to live in a place with so much art history and beauty! I am too amazed by the revolving bridge. Da Vinci has always been one of my favorite painters; he is even featured as a main character in a cinderella type movie called "Ever After" starring Drew Berrymore. I enjoyed it thoroughly.
<3

I recently saw a special on tv - a two part show on DaVinci and I was just in awe of that man... they took several of his sketches to see if they would actually work and they did - he was on truly brilliant person!

Merveilleux, ton blog!
another amazing tour, plus, this isn't that strange considering I grew up in "New Rochelle" (New York), but the castle of Clos Lucé (or that type ofg chateau) is clearly the style model for my high school. Ah, the world is an interconnected place.
Wonderful information about Leonardo Di Vinci...I did not know about the castles. I had heard about some of his drawing being made into models and was amazed by his further genius. Those people of that intellect sometimes have very sad lives...what a brilliant brain he had
Da Vinci was an amazing man, thank you for sharing a bit of his story with us! You keep sharing these amazing photos, and I wish more each time that I see them that I can make it to France someday.
These castles are beautiful I would love to add them to my travel itinerary.
oh, leonardo was a genius! How I wish I could be there to see his castle too!
Michel, I'm SO envious!! This would have been very, very interesting to have visited. I could spend hours and hours looking around there.
Thanks for sharing all this with us.
What an interesting trip!! Da Vinci was an amazing genius....he still intrigues us, centuries later...what a legacy he left for all of us. Thank you for sharing this, I feel compelled to discover more.
Have a great week, Michel!!
Oh, that would be so interesting to see! I've enjoyed looking at the pictures and reading about it.
Sounds thoroughly amazing! So glad you share these with us.
wow! leonardo da vinci! Must be fun to travel around France, such a beautiful country!
He was remarkable.
Wow...I can't believe you went there.
That must have been so incredible.
If it were me,
I don't know how I would be able to absorb everything at one time.
To be where Leonardo once stayed...would be so amazing.
*hugs*
thanks for sharing your visit of leonardos castle with us.. he was an amazing person, so many talents and creativities. If he remained humble- another quality to be admired
Poor leonardo, what a live he had and what a genius. I cannot think of him drinking warm wine, but, why not?
As a young man one of the things he liked to do was buy birds at the markt and let them fly free.
He used to write in reverse and perhaps he understood the birds, they talk in reverse too.
He is most remembered for his Mona lisa, a painting that, afther getting his money to make him, never would give away.
Must feel very strange to visite his last place where he lived.
His name is from the town where he was born,Vinci, as he was born from a notmarried mother, From Vinci. Amazing.
Thanks for sharing.
Bien à toi,
Carlo
What an old soul he was! A genius, a true one, is humble but Leo had no need to be. He stands as a true genius still today. Magnificent! I am with Janine, awed by his talent!
At a time in life when I am unable to travel and explore the beauty and history of our world, I am privileged to share it through your eyes. Many thaks and many blessings! Boston
DaVinci was definately a very smart man. The castle is beautiful!
i can always find some of the most beautiful pictures on your site. i love the historic places. most of all i love to hear the stories that comes with them.
: ) Romanta
I would have loved to visit this small castle. Leonardo Da Vinci is one of our favorite historical figures. The photos of Clos Luce are great.
I think Leonardo Di Vinci was possible the greatest man of all time, such talent in one man. Wonderful.
History is brought to life when one visits these places. I really must make a visit to France soon and see your chateaux - if only to compare them with the British castles.
Marie
Thank you for your kind words. I'm waiting until I feel better to read your blogs, because I'd like to practice my French on them, rather than resorting to reading the English.
Leonardo was a truly brilliant man. I recently watched a drama/documentary about him, surprisingly, despite designing some really fearsome engines of war, he was a pacifist who only sold those terrible machines to obtain money for projects he wished to do such as the devices you saw.
Peace
cool pictures. -dave
How amazing. I am always inspired by Leonardo. Especially his portraits. He was such an amazing man.
What an amazing man and thanks for telling us all about the places you visited ,at least we learn things through xanga and i love seeing your pictures. Not being into paintings very much I have not studied the artists all that much ,although i knew about his inventions. A man for all seasons .Thanks for your kind comments to me. i have been lax lately at visiting people ,getting old at last. I think, Love Marjie

Hello Michel,
Rosemary
I went today to see my parents in Annapolis Maryland.
They live there now for 15 years. They are from the Netherlands. Blizzie and I went to visit them. We just arrived home for dinner...
Blizzie and Christina are my daughters. Blizzie's real name is Elizabeth. We have many names for her though... Blizzie is 16. She will go into grade 11 of high school. Christina is 19. She is at college at William and Mary in Williamsburg Virginia, very close to the ocean and Norfolk, Virginia, (about 3 hours from home).
Thank you for your questions. I do not mind answering.
Oh! and I have some pictures on my blog... the previous entry shows my daughters and me together
This is a fascinating history and tour of the legendary Leonardo Da Vinci: thank you for sharing this with us. I never realized that the man was so talented with machinery and engineering. Quite amazing! And I love the pictures.
Thank you for your kind wishes towards Wendy. I do appreciate it!
Enjoy your Thursday, Michel!
No one could ever say enough about the extroardinary man that was Leonardo Da Vinci. A man well before his time. He was a man of genius thought and dreams!! A revolutionary of so many fields!! I have always enjoyed any discussion that centered around the man...
And what a lucky person you are Michel to go and see one of the places he lived. To stand in his kitchen or other room, and think "I am standing in a place that was once occupied by a great mind". I am sure it put some shivers down your spine. I know you are one to appreciate such places.
I am envious of your adventure to Leonardo's. Thank you for letting me have a taste of what it felt like.
Much love,
Sarah
Thank you Michel fora really interesting blog and a fine picture of the Castle. i would love to see it for myself. Ron
yes...thanks so much for sharing. the history of france is something i admire. it's a shame we have in this country a bad case of foolishness regarding france because of iraq.
Amazing. Makes me long to make a return trip to France again. There's still so much I need to see there! I wish that my country were as rich in culture and history as yours.
How exciting to experience first hand the history and home of the universal genius Leonardo. He is proof that in the genius creativity becomes manifest without calculation.
Ha ha! About the power: It comes from a hydroelectric plant placed at the bottom of a high mountain in Homer, Alaska - 100 km to the south. My wife and I also have a fuel powered generator that supplies electricity in the winter when the lines are broken (That happens with frequency during the blizzardly winter.)
I forget to add that we are fortunate that a natural gas line that passes through the wilderness crosses my land. I'm tapped into it for heating and the electic lines also follow its path.
I don't know why but I can't see the first two images!
Two of my sons have been there, but I haven't, it shows how I am going to die one day without seeing so much I should see.
What a rare treat that would be... to be in a room where Leonardo da Vinci lived. I can't imagine any building that old still being there, but then I live in a place that was indian territory less than a hundred years ago.
Thank you for your kind comments. And I don't mind them being written in English, but I do always look forward to them being written in French, it makes them rather enjoyable!
<3
He was such an amazing man!
Thanks for your comments...as to what to do next, that project was the one I was employed on until the end of last year. I'm doing a different project now, and still working towards the Masters...there is always plenty to do!
Leonard...quel homme!
You are right. Leonardo D'Vinci was a great genius. Thank you for the interesting tour of his last home.
Thanks also for your comment on my political email blog. George W. Bush worries me, too. I really hope he is not re-elected, but I am afraid he will be.
Wha !!

That is a beautiful castle!
I have always admired Leonardo Da Vinci. He was a true visionary and a genius.
Fantastic pictures yet again! The castle is gorgeous. It's funny that you wrote about Da Vinci, as I have just finshed reading The Da Vinci Code, which sparked a whole new interest for me in Leonardo's works!
It seems to me that Leonardo was truly a specatacular man! It must have been a totally wonderful and learning experience going there and seeing all of that first hand. I envy you your ability to see such things. But I am so happy you share it all with us, it increases my knowledge so much I am humbled by how little I truly know of these things. Thank you so much for sharing. Have a great day and a wonderful tomorrow ! ! ! Much love and many hugs to you and Janine ! ! ! May you both sleep with the angels and wake up fully rested and ready for a new day ! ! !
What a masterpiece Trip! Wish i could see and experience it too. Got a reproduction of one of his great work! STAY QOOL Sir Michel!
how fantastic. i would want to visit that place when i come to france. i think i should. thank you for sharing.
You pay rightful honor, my friend. You've given us a fauquet-slice of the life of Leonardo--superb!
As always you show and tell it so well. (He was quite an amazing man. That he was humble speaks even more for him.)
Love, Brenda
great pictures! da Vincci is really great...all talented and stuff..wish i could get a chance to visit france =)
ann
...here in the Valley we are fortunate to be one of two cities in the United States selected to exhibit "The Rau Collection: European Masterpeices". It's a private collection of 95 rarely seen works that run the gamut of European paintings over a stretch of 500 years. I'm fairly confident the showing will include a da Vince or two.
Answer to lkhend : This blog has nothing to do with the book " the Da Vinci code " that publishes false ideas that tend to destroy the christian faith . For me this book is a simple and pure talented fiction that brings much money to the author . I see in Leonardo da Vinci a grand painter , a scientist , a genius and... a Christian ( I read his writings on the walls of the house ) .
He was truely a genus. Thanks for sharing your trip.....wish I were able to be there too.
Oh, Michel, thank you for this wonderful history lesson. Can you imagine what more he might have done if he lived longer? What a genius he was! Enjoy the day. Such magnificent homes in Europe and such ugly square boxes we make in America.. LOL..
Truly amazing man, and awesome pics too!! Thx Michel my friend!!

Just wanted to say hi and hope you are doing well!! Looking forward to seeing more pictures!!
Thank you once again for your very kind words, Michel. I do appreciate it and I hope you are doing well today.
Talk to you again soon. Have a wonderful week!
Ah, here is a very interesting part of history. Leonardo was a true genius. I enjoy reading your always interesting blogs. They are even better, because you include photographs. Unfortuanately, I do not have the necessary equipment to put photographs on my blog. Perhaps in the future.
)
Merci pour ton amitié, Michel
Clara
So sorry I have not been around for a while, things just keep happening, which leaves me little time to do the things I would like to do.
I really appreciate all your comments on my site and hope I will have more time to be on here, when the cold weather arrives.
This blog is so interesting and the pictures are so beautiful. How lucky you are to be able to visit such a beautiful castle, where so much history has gone on inside these walls. A beautiful tribute to a great artist, a great man. Thanks, Michel!!!
Love
Edie Rose
Thank you for your consistent support!
you don't have to visit my site every day!! I know that you are very busy. I just like dropping by and saying hi and am always happy to read your comments. But don't feel you have to always read them. Hope you are having a wonderful day!!
Oh how lucky you are to have visited this place. Leonardo was a genius, but I have a feeling he was a rather grumpy man. How amazing to see models that were made from his drawings, he really was ahead of his time. That was a very wise king who invited him to live there. Thanks for sharing with us your visit.
thankx for stopping by..and Bonjour to you sir..
have a nice evening...
Ron
Wow, that is so interesting. What a brilliant man he was...I'd love to visit that place!! Thank you for sharing.
