  • La fraîcheur des commencements .

The freshness of the beginnings .

English version under the first picture

Some of you asked me what I looked like in 1957 and how I met Janine . Here is the picture . I was a young elementary school teacher at this time and on the picture I was among a group of colleagues . During the vacations I worked as a monitor in a summer camp for young people and Janine too . This is how we met each other .

I attended  also courses at the university at the same time and I became secondary shool teacher in 1958 . Then I joined the army , where I became an officer , during 27 months and half including a time in Algeria ( war ) . I came back at the end of December 1960 and married Janine on the 18th of February 1961 .

This is a picture of us taken the day after the wedding which was very simple since I had lost both  my  parents in 1956 and I was their only child . Besides Janine didn' t wear the traditional white wedding gown but she wore that simple white /beige dress , very nice .

Our first child is born the next year in January 1962 .

Janine and Michel on the 19 february 1961 , the day after their wedding

  • Oh Michel those pictures are so sweet - you are so handsome - then and now -and there is love in your eyes Lovely! C~

  • What a beautiful memoir...I just love how you love your wife...you are such a wonderful example to us all!

I too had a simple dress when Blaine and I married.  Your wife is absolutely beautiful!!!  One does not need all the finery in the world to show how much a husband and wife love each other on their wedding day.  That is so apparent in this picture Michel...Thank you for sharing your stories with us and your pictures.

Blaine and I decided for our wedding to keep things simple.  We did not ask for gifts but simply that people would join us afterwards for a bbq.  We had a wonderful party and instead of gifts people brought food.  It was a wonderful way to celebrate our marriage...with family and friends.

    I love your pictures...love your stories...xoxoxo Cat

  • ah, le 19 nous approche !

  • you guys look great! wow. I think of what you'd survived by that moment, war, the occupation, the rebuilding, the nightmare of Algeria (I just bought a copy of The Battle of Algiers). And well, there you are: through all that and on your way in life with a beautiful woman...

  • Thank you for this beautiful glimpse into your past!!  How happy you two are!

    ~Aubrey

  • You are very handsome in those photos Michel what a dashing young man you were .

I did not realise that you had been in Algeria it most of been very hard of Janine while you were away .

You both look a very happy couple on your wedding day

  • I really enjoy reading about how the two of you met.  You make quite a lovely couple, and it is a very impressive accomplishment in my country for a couple to stay together for so long.  You inspire so many, Michel.

    -matt

  • Michel I read your xanga to learn french, I can understand and read it, but its great that you put it in bilingual mode :)

I know Haitian Kreyol but its NOT FRENCH and the accent is COMPLETELY different. I am trying to learn French, it's hard because I mix it up with Haitian Kreyol. If it was German I wouldn't mess it up at all. I am learning Tagalog and I NEVER mess it up with Haitian Kreyol, it's because kreyol is too close to french

  • A lovely love story Thank you for sharing. You are a really pretty/handsome couple. When Frank and I were courting he had to join the army, he was sent to Germany, it was so hard for me when he was away. I'm sure Janine felt the same. Marie

BTW Damian is married to Louise, called Lou by the Burkes because Julie's eldest girl is also Louise, it was her 30th party. Hope that explains the intricacy of the name in this family.

  • HEY! I was born in January of 1962...the 12th, to be exact! (btw, you havent changed a bit!!)

  • Oh wow!!  Michel you two were a handsome couple indeed!  She is absolutely beautiful and a lucky woman to land a great looking gent herself!
I love it when you share stories about Janine and the rest of your family!  You know it won't be long before your 50th and I'm sure your family is planning a big celebration for you guys!

    On dit:

*Some* of you asked me *what* I looked...

Colonie de vacances s'appelle *Summer camp*.

Tu as oublié: This is *how* we met.

I attended... *at* the same time and I *became*...

Then I joined the army *where* I *became*...

This is a picture... *taken the day after* the wedding, which was simple since I had lost *both* my parents.

Corrige aussi *the day after* dans la légende.

    En toute amitié.

  • Oops.

)... "délicieuse"!!

  • What a beautiful couple the two of you are and after 44 years you still are a beautiful couple. I enjoyed reading about how you met Janine.

An officer in the army, a school teacher-it is easy to see that you have accomplished much in your lifetime.

Thanks for asking about me. I am doing better, but still not able to do all the things that I would like to do right now.

    Love

    Edie Rose

  • I meant to say-what a beautiful couple the two of you were

I adore old photographs, especially when the story of the picture is also told. The two of you are so cute. I am guessing Janine, the seamtress made her dress. Sometimes, in our day, more emphasis (money and time) is placed on the wedding ceremony instead of the marriage. Hopefully, the marriage last for much longer than the ceremony! Happy Anniversary (early) to you both!

  • *Gail raises her hand* Did you remain a teacher until you retired? or did you go into another line of work?
I agree with what ItsOnlyC said.

  • you havent changed a bit, michel~!  the two of you make a beautiful couple.

    ~janny

  • Bonjour, Michel!

Wow...I can't believe myself. I am in tears after reading this, but also because of those wonderful pictures. I love the story of how you two met. It truly is beautiful. I am at a loss of words which is quite rare for me! I think that it is magical the way you two met and fell in love. I can see the love in that picture of you both together. Your union is proof that true love can last.

Thank you for sharing this fascinating post, Michel. I hope you are having a great week so far. Take care! God bless, my friend.

  • Beautiful couple you were then as well!
Your parents passing makes me sad, along with your time spent in Algeria.
I can see how you must relish in this time spent with your huge family, seing as though you were an only child and totally alone right before Janine.
Leave it to me to be a damper in the comments section.

  • Beautiful pictures.  You still have that twinkle in your eye today, Michel

  • Michel, you and Janine look the same!

My parents were married in the 40's and also had a very simple wedding, since it was after the war.
A simple wedding is better I think.

It is sad that your parents were not with you on your wedding day. I know they were there with both of you in spirit.
    This is a beautiful story.

Thank you for sharing this today.
    Wonderful photos

  • She didn't need a big white dress to look beautiful.

    What was the war like?

  • You can tell that is you ,you have aged the same ,except you look more cuddly older. Nice to have these old pictures. Did you have 5 children in the end?. Keep well Love MarjieP.S Thank you for your constant comments you make me vain. Ha! Ha!

  • Everything looks better in Black & White

My parents got married around that time, I think. Did you have a lot more photos taken during the wedding?

And your 44th anniversary is coming too

  • It is nice to look into the window of your past...the two of you so young and in love...and now still in love...Soul Mates...I am sorry you lost your parents at such a young age...she is as beautiful today as back then...so innocent and sweet...you are a very handsome young man and have aged to perfection...what a lovely life you have...thanks for sharing...huggs...Sassy

  • the picture of the two of you is perfect. I have tried to think of the two of you when u were younger ... and the image i had was good. But this is SO much nicer!

Its pretty amazing that I have seen pictures of so many different phases of your life. And the two of u have always looked great together.

thank you for sharing this :)

  • Very handsome couple you make!  You look like you had and have a wonderful affection between you.

I didn't realize that you were a teacher.  You must have a lot of memories from that.  And then going to war...what a change in your life.

By the way, I was born in 1962!

    Hugs,

    Lisa

  • Wow so romantic! I wonder if Janine had to wait very impatiently for her wedding while you were at war?

Happy early Wedding anniversary. Hope you both will share many more years of happiness and love.

  • Thank for giving us some images to go with the story., a wonderful story told in few words but thay mean a all life.Beautifullly done, I am impressed.

The photo's  tell a lot oabout our love for each other and you are changed , you must have the quality of gold, keeps shining for ever. You look the same as that time.

    Thanks again.

    Bien à toi

    Carlo

P.S.   I did make two BIG mistakes, thanks for showing me. Theý say a donkey does not hurt himself three times.....donkeys are smarter then me, because I do keep the same mistakes over and over again..

  • What a nice looking couple you make!  I love to see marriages last so long because it's so uncommon these days.  Many times, simple weddings are the best.  When my husband Martin and I got married five years ago,  we just had three friends at a justice of the peace.... he wore a shit and tie and I wore a skirt and jacket.

  • Wow, Michel!  Thanks for your wonderful comments on my last post.  What a beautiful story, thanks so much for telling me.  I am privileged to hear it!  It is wonderful that you met while pursuing your passion for education.  Yours is an incredible love story.  I am amazed when I hear about the odds that you faced...  I am also enchanted and delighted with the photographs.  You are so handsome, and Janine is so classically gorgeous.  You and Janine are as spirited as ever.  Que bon!

Oui, I had a great time at the 70th party.  Actually, the meaning of " OITO and coruscation " is a bit of an inside joke between a close friend of mine and me.  Our favorite number is eight ("oito" means eight in Portuguese) and "coruscation" means "shimmering or sparkling."  Wow you pay close attention to my blog - I'm flattered.  I'm glad to see that the lyrics in the last line of my blog were applicable to you and Janine.  :)

Bonne anniversaire (would you still say that for a happy anniversary wish?) for the both of you.  Will you tell the story of your children?

  • Such beautiful photos Michel!  I like how the old photo are done in black and white....these days, everything is color, color, color.....sometimes I think it takes away some of the 'essence'.  When one isn't distracted, the viewing of the photo is much more appreciated.

  • How lovely to read how you met Janine, Michel! You are such a great looking couple, and this photo of you the day after your wedding is truly beautiful. Glenn my husband, remarked to me after seeing the picture of Janine, that she looks similar to Audrey Hepburn!

  • your life inspires me, Michel... Allow me to say that you were an extremely charming man when you met your whife, I´m sure she had no choice but to marry you. And she... oh... what a wonderful young lady... and she keeps that wonderful beauty, charm and joy from what I can see from the pics nowadays... Thanks for sharing, my friend. Send a hug from Brazil to Janine!

  • What charming photographs.  It is a joy to see a young couple in love who now almost 44 years later still love each other.  Congratulations in advance on your wedding anniversary.

    Carol Suzanne

  • I hope that Myke and I will have as many happy years together as you and Janine have had.  You are a beautiful couple.

  • A very beautiful couple. Thanks for sharing the pictures. Take care.

  • regarding your comment, michel ~

i was referring to the #1 college basketball team ~ undefeated University of Illinois.

    :o )

it's always nice to see you

  • *giving your grade* You answer gets a very good grade. An A.

  • you touch my heart somewhere.. in this day and age of always examining relationships, you seem rock solid in ur love and relationship towrads each other.

  • What a beautiful photo of the two of you. I can see the love.

  • the pictures are so beautiful! i love your prespective on everything.  it seems like there should be books and movies about your life! thank you for the get-well message!

    <3ashera

  • They showed that real-life film about a French school-teacher and his children on the telly the other day, a very touching film.

  • Beautiful memories, beautiful lady.  I wish I spoke French.  Thanks for the translation.

  • Merci milles fois pour cette histoire! J'en ai attendu pendant long temps !!!

  • Thanxs for sharing Michel! Very beautiful picture! Your bride is stunning!

  • Today I posted pictures of my mother...with a bit of history...or mine that is.  My mother was born in November 1929...I think I will try and post some more of her during the 1930's.  My oldest daughter Lillian reminds me very much of my mother.  I thought of you as I pulled out the pictures and how you so lovingly write memoirs of your family with the history...thank you for being such a wonderful example!

    xoxo Cat

  • J'aimais ecouter le sujet de comment tu as mets ta feme. C'etait tres magnificent.

  • Thank you for the pictures and the story of you and Janine.  I can see why Janine was attracted to you, you are a handsome young man in the picture.  And she is beautiful as well.  You make a lovely couple.  The year of your marriage is also the year of my birth and Neil was born in 1962 the same as your first child.  As you see, I "robbed the cradle" with my younger groom!

Thank you for the congratulations.   In New England this year our "cup runneth over" with championships in both football and baseball.  Of course we won the football championship in 2004 also, but the World Series win in 2004 was Boston's first in 86 years!  It was worth the wait!

  • awww what a lovely picture! =)

  • I love the pictures, thank you for sharing your past and present with us.  It's invaluable to readers like me who feel touched about life through seeing and reading your life.

  • Bonne année à notre ami Le coq gaulois !

Chez Louisa j'ai trouvé ceci :
"Roosters can expect a happy year and a time to reflect on missions accomplished and next steps. High spirits might sink quickly when conflicts arise, however, these can be readily resolved and lead to more support in the long run for your new ideas."

  • what an elegant and beautiful couple! :O)

  • Oh what a beautiful memory of this special day. Both of you looked so young and in love.

  • I love the picture of you two together. Very nice. Awww. :)

  •    You two make a handsome couple. I too, had wondered at how you met, since you are such a devoted pair. Thanks for sharing this with us.

  • Hi! It is Kat - I was just thinking of you the other day!  I was looking for a book in French at Barnes and Noble but they only have Spanish books - mostly - novels, I mean.  I am thinking of ordering THE STRANGER in French - I had it once - I want to read it again - also I want to read again more things in French - I have to start pretty basic......I have had five years of class but it has been a long time - - still so much of French stayed with me which I love.  It is good for my brain to work on translations - I love the sound of French for some reason - it has always been so beautiful to me - perhaps, because, after Latin - it was so much more fun and easier to me (probably BECAUSE of Latin!)  I remember how I translated Jason and the golden fleece - what a different story I had!  Take care - love the pictures!Kat

  • What a romantic picture! What a handsome couple you both make. Hope this finds you well and happy and having lots of fun.

  • Awww Michel!!! The way you're holding her hand is so sweet and tender and gentle...like if you were holding a fragile crystal figurine...and there's so much in your eyes...both of you....anticipation...and I am sure also a whole bunch of dreams....Tell me....now that you have the chance to look back into your life...how different was it from that very same day when you got married and thought about your life together?

It's so wonderful to see you and your beloved Janine together for so many years and Oh I bet you have been through so much!!! I just think of you and it fills my heart with joy and hope.

    Have a wonderful week!

    Love, Xally

  • Michel...regarding your comment on 'jealous men'...heheheh....I would dare say that italian men are jealous.  Of course also my husband, because he believes that when we finally get our Westie doggie, I will love her more than him!! hahahahaha!

  • My friend, I just found your site through reading the comments on PopeOnABomb's site. I'm quite impressed. I'm currently in the Army, and spent 15 months in OIF I, I.5, and II

Currently in Germany working for AFN...went to war with the First Armored Division, and loved Europe, so decided to stay. :)

Keep up the posts...loved the horse poem.

  • Thank you for your insight regarding my "History" post.  I love to hear from you and yes, I understood and appreciate. I used to be very confused about Old Testament until I stood firm in the New.

  • Such a lovely wedding picture.  It is very apparent that the love has grown over the years like a fine wine that has aged and is appreciated.  Congratulations to you both on your good life Nancy

  • Ah! spiders are evil! thankfully i didnt dream about them again!

    <3ashera

  • The pictures are very lovely. You are a fine looking man, and your bride is beautiful!

I enjoyed the teasing in your comment to me! Thank you so much!

Have a wonderful weekend, my friend!

  • I"m glad you enjoyed it. Take care and have a good weekend.

  • You were a teacher too! I like the photo because it shows a quiet contentment and joy... the type that is stable and mature, not flitting. You've been married for a long while now... perhaps, you'll share some lessons you've learnt about being a husband?

  • It's hard to imagine, but like a fine wine, you have improved with age. You must be on the top of the list, because your were a very handsome young man.

  • How precious are the photos from such times.  I have been accused of being a 'picture taking fool', but just look at how special having these memories can be years later.  You look wonderful and much the same as you look now and Janine is beautiful in the picture as she still is as well.  You and your family are wonderful for us to read about and I am always glad when you share these things with us, your adoring readership and fans.

Have a great weekend and enjoy your Valentine Janine!  (Mike and I went out to eat at one of our favorite places last night in honor of Valentine's day. Then we went to my sister's church and played 3 hours of volleyball!)

    Hugs and love,

                        Deb

P.S. Yes, I did enjoy the recording and singing last Sunday that I wrote about in my latest blog entry, and we did sing one song that was an original, written by my niece, Angie.  The other songs were the songs we love to sing to The Lord during our regular service times, not hymns really, but Praise & Worship music that is known and sang here a lot in many churches.

  • Hi Michel!  It was so good to hear from you!!!!  I just have not been keeping up with writing as I use to - but I will try to better.   Send me your email to kitchkat50@hotmail.com and I will email you some of my latest art - thank you!  Kat    Another old favorite of mine is Kafka's......now what was that book????? and also Crime and Punishment - Dostoevsky - read them in school but  I should read them now - it is funny how we think differently as adults.  Kat

  • yes, i suppose i cant really change human nature, but it is depressing none the less.

    <3ashera

  • The photos are great Michel.  An excellent photo of you and Janine.  I will wish you and Janine a very Happy Wedding Anniversary in advance, my friend.

  • What a beautiful story and that your loved endured even your time in the war, too. Janine is beautiful and reminds me of Audrey Hepburn and you are as handsome today as then like a very proper teacher. The love you both have for each other shines through in this picture. I am sure your parents were looking down at on your wedding day to give you their blessings from heaven. Michel, some of the simplest things in life give us the greatest pleasures. It's not how much you spend on the wedding, but the love in your hearts that count and persevere. You are both deeply blessed. Have a happy weekend and thank you for sharing part of your life with us.

  • hey michel,

what did you mean by a new blog? anyway, i'm doing alright. busy with work. currently working as a barista at starbucks. which explains the lack of time for any post. my apologies.

    ~aLiAh

  • Yes, I'm doing well. Once again, my sister is farther away from me than I care for, but life does that to us a lot. I'm well. How are you?

  • 100th! We love what you write about thistles and what they mean in France. Wonderful stuff as is this blog

  • Oh Wow. Sucha beautiful and smart couple you guys make!! I say smart in the fact that you guys both look very intelligent. I am sure you guys have the kind of relationship where you ponder and question things in life. Deep conversations and interesting thoughts to share with one another. Also, One can see the love and adoration you guys share. You are both very blessed to have each other!!!

I agree with mom. It must have been very difficut to be surrounded by fresh and open minds. Innocent and pure youth. Then to go to war to experience the very opposite of that which is innocent and pure. Must have been a struggle.

Much love to you and your beautiful wife,

    Sarah

  • Janine is so elegant in that photo.....so very beautiful.  I was born in March 1962 so I'm about the same age as you marriage.    I hope you enjoy a wonderful wedding anniversary next week!

  • simple can be beautiful

  • Wow. That's beautiful.

  • Beautiful - and perfect for Valentine's Day Weekend.  Thank you for sharing this photo of young love.

  • I am absolutely amazed by this blog. Finally some substance! Sometimes I wish more older generations would right down everything like you do. The pictures are awesome and your stories transcend generations.

    -the rachael

  • The pictures say a lot... they are so telling. I've actually never seen your site, and I'm glad I just stumbled upon it.

  • HI Michel, I just read a comment on PUSSICAT'S you ask if there are jealous men, you say you're not. Well there are ! My daughter has just left the man she thought would be the love of her life, because he's an obsessive jealous person. A cultured person, a respected and talented architect, yet he made her life absolut hell with his unfounded jelousy, she has come home to "convalesce", I am so worried for her, also worried that she might be weak and go back to him. She had no life of her own, fortunately her friends have not abandoned her. she's 31 and he's 38. I daresay he's too old to change, maybe if he were in his 20's.

  • a very nice looking couple... You both still look young and happy

  • that is the perfect valentines day blog. thank you for sharing your love and your family with us.  you really give me such hope and joy. your web log is such a beautiful and personal thing. thank you.

  • what a young stud you were! thanks for sharing this with us....such treasures you have in your posession.

  • J'espère qque tu as passé une bonne Saint Valentin, Michel.

    Merci encore.

    Clara

Michel, I live in the State of New Hampshire, USA.

The highest point in New Hampshire is  Mount Washington, at 6,288 feet above sea level.

You asked how I drive in the snow. I actually am used to it, after living here all my life. I do not live on a mountain, but am surrounded by them. We have some great highway crews that keep our roads cleared and safe. My son does a lot of rock and ice climbing on Mt Washington.

  • Beautiful photos.

I apologize if I have seemed rude lately. I am working out of town, travelling much, and so have little spare time. For this reason I have spent that time with only those closest to me. It is no excuse for rude behavior, but I hope you will forgive me.

  • Obviously a marriage made in heaven, since it's given you both so many happy years! Thanks for sharing the pictures of you and your beloved Janine with us.

  • Oh my gosh, I didn't realise how many blogs I've missed. This is a wonderful blog. You and Janine look lovely as a young couple. And the simple white/beige dress is classic and really nice.
