The grand international trains make me dreaming .

One of my daughters has sent to me photos taken into the railway station of Istambul ( Turkey ) which was the terminus of the famous train ORIENT - Simplon - EXPRESS : Paris , Lausanne , Milano , Beograd , Istambul . That luxuous Compagnie des Wagons - Lits ' s train with its blue and gold wagons still exists . I saw it two years ago at the maritime station of Boulogne - sur - mer ( France ) . It was waiting for rich passengers getting off the boat from England . But it did not go neither to Beograd nor to Istambul . I think it went to Italia or Austria . The grand international trains always kept me in dream . I imagined life during many days in these rolling palaces where you have time to see the countries that you crossed . The railway led me by mind towards far - away horizons ......When I were a child from our house in Marquise , little town situated between Boulogne and Calais , I saw everyday the " Golden Arrow " which at full steam rushed from Paris to London . I always was fascinated . Probably you know other thains of that sort in other countries of the world . If you spoke of them to me ?

  • It has been 38 years since I rode in a train. I went from Denver, Colorado, to Kansas City, MO. with my daughter of one year. The country side was lovely as it was summer time.

  • Tha last train i took was the TGV,it is real fast but you don't have dreams.
I think the Orient- Express IS going again but as touristic attraction.
    Ciao

  • In England we have quite a few steam trains which are survivors of the past. These are run daily by volunteers [and in uniforms etc.]  On rare occasions the famous Flying Scotsman is here too.  They are great fun and the are THRIVING too

  • Sounds like some lovely pictures. I would love to see them posted on Xanga and I am sure I am not the only one

  • International training is nice. We made a tour from Zoetermeer to Hof in Germany, taking the international trains (Not TGV's) I will look up the information and will write about it in time. Love, Bianca.

About the TGV: they are building "right in our back yard", as people say it here  - a new train track, to let the Thalys go fast from Amsterdam to Paris. When all is finished, the trip will take 3 hours...

  • In 1985 I took a train from Kansas City, Missouri to Los Angles, California.  A herd of Horses galloped alongside us when we passed through southern Colorado.  My two sons were 7 and 8 yrs old then.

  • Thanks for sending me that post. I have seen many films about the Orient Express and would very much like to have traveled on it, but the cost was far too much. My claim to fame is a rail journey from Cape Town, South Africa to Salisbury, Southern Rhodesia, that's the longest rail journey I have made, which was three days. Unfortunately I have no photos of that trip as I was a young man, barely 19 years old. I had gone straight from school to join the colonial police. ~ Tim
