  • The snail, a wonder! / Snail race in the years 30-40's

    L’escargot , une merveille !

    The snail, a wonder !

     16 Janvier 2015

    English version below the pictures

my snail , mon escargot .            Octobre 2014                                  photo Janine Fauquet

Last october I removed the Dahlias with weeding  simultaneously . Suddenly I felt some sweet thing slipping on one of my fingers. That was a snail exploring my hand  vividly. No apparent movement of organs : he slipped regularly  on my hand.. I think that the snail is the only animal that moves in waves of muscle contractions under foot, facilitated by the mucus which helps the adhesion to the substrate.I returned home with the snail on the hand. Janine took some pictures difficult because the animal was moving. I admired the long tentacles bearing his eyes, and the little ones used to the touch. They are connected to nodes forming a simple brain. The mouth is just below. Thus, the head is carried by the forefoot. Do  you know a lot of this kind of animal? And I'm not talking about other molluscs that are as original (squids that have the foot on the head, mussels that have no head , etc ..

My snail was very active , the hole of its lung is largely open .  Forgive for the ground under my nail ; I was gardening. Photo Janine Fauquet Octobre 2014

My snail took a pose to show the hole of enter and out of the air from his lungs. Yes the animal has a lung, heart, blood vessels, digestive apparatus. This is all tangled and twisted because during its  development the  body is  twisting .. The most amazing thing is that the snail is hermaphrodite. It has  male and a female reproductive systems but there 's no self-fecondation but mating. A snail injects his sperm with a penis in the vagina of the other and vice versa; Each of them  will lay a large number of small eggs in the soil. You see this refined complexity and I remember a cold sweat when in the past  I had to dissect a snail  to show well separated without destroying the different organs. And do not forget that the snail carries its house, a spiral shell that grows with the growth of the animal.

I  handed my snail in the garden. Living beings have a highly developed organization, arousing the wonder and respect. But this needs to be known. Creation is a wonder and it continues.

    Course d'escargots

     snail race.

    English version below the picture

Imaginez !

     Doux souvenirs.

    snail race 30 40

In the years 30's-40's most of the time children always were playing outside, girls and boys together. We invented a lot of games to play together. Among them there were snail race. We chose in the shadowed places well awake snails and put them on a smooth wall in line .The one that slid higher was the winner and so the child " owner". The group of children followed with impatience the race and every one encouraged his (her) snail . Some shouted .of joy , others were disappointed and despising , and others were crying to see their loser snail. Sometimes the snails was stubborn and refused to climb the wall . Imagine !  :)

    Sweet memories .

  • I thought snails were bad for the garden. ?

ryc: The Quarry market sign you saw from the back side. It is facing the main highway where one can read it correctly. :-)

  • Looks like you are into biology. Am into electronics and computer.

    • Yes I was into biology, geology and some physic . All branches of sciences are linked, for instance with electronics and computer.

  • What a pretty snail! I like them and slugs too. The medical leech is as pretty as an oriental rug. This snail in the first photo is as beautifully made!

  • What wonderful photos! I've always enjoyed watching snails in the garden! Your snail is very handsome! :-)
Still praying for you and Janine!
    HUGS!!! :-)

  • Yes creation is a wonder and lovely snail. I am cleaning up my small garden spot in front of my apt and will soon be joining others to clean up the community garden out back.

  • The complexity of creation amazes me. It's hard for me to believe that all of this just "happened" without a Creator. I've hardly ever seen a snail in Indiana. We used to have a lot of them in California, but they weren't as pretty as yours. Is there a certain kind of snail that French people eat? I've never tasted them.

  • so interesting!

  • I think snails are very cute. That one looks quite bold. If I had a proper place of my own I'd try to harvest them for the kitchen, supposedly the common ones are good for that.

  • TY so very much for your lovely and supportive comment on the loss of grand daughters baby.

  • Reminds me of Luma.
They are amazing creatures and remind uf of the incredible miracle of life.

  • God makes such intricate creatures. Small but still cared for enough to give heart and lungs and other organs that he gave to humans and large animals. This is how I think of the flower, "Queen Annes lace"...with so many tiny petals. No other human being has seen this one petal....and no other human being has seen this snail but you and Janine.

  • Hello Michel an don the snow is not welcome here.

  • Hello Michel. I do not care for a lot of the movies that come out today but loved Guardians of the Galaxy and it was very entertaining and kept my interest all the way through.
    I enjoyed it very much.

  • Hello Michel and Ty for your comments on my photo post of down at the tracks.
They are very used and run through the business part of town over at the port.

  • I love snails too but specially with herb and garlic !:)

  • Hello Michel
I hope that you an your family are having a lovely week end.
TY for your kind comment on my post about this blog. (my blog)

  • Ty for your comment about Ali in her little box glaring at me.

  • I hope your weekend is going well!
Thank you for the snail jokes on my WP site! I laughed and laughed! :-) "Wheeee"... :-D
    HUGS!!! :-)

  • yes, I'm still missing in action but I stay busy on facebook so I'm fine.
I worried about you when I saw Paris on the news.

  • Good Afternoon, Michel. Snails are not appreciated by my dear wife. She will pick up an earthworm on the sidewalk and gently place it on moist soil, but snails are her number one garden enemy.

I loved your close up photos of the snail. They are interesting looking creatures.

  • Have not found snails in my yard and few around here. But we do have small to very large slugs, who love to destroy my plants. A few yrs back there were over 250 found in one night. Slugs over in our Olympia Rain Forest grow huge. Lots of moisture and vegetation. Interesting info about the snail. Thanks Michel...................<3 Marilyn

  • I have not studied much about snails, so your lesson was very instructive. I did have the pleasure of eating large snails (their shells must have been 6 inches across), when, in 1985, I spent the summer working in the Andes mountains of Peru. We were living in a mountaintop village among a group of people who still painted their faces and occasionally fought other villages with bow and arrow for weapons. I enjoy reading about the fruits of your curiosity and interest in the creation around you.

  • I love the memory of snail races!! It was a simpler time - no video games or TV to keep children amused! I have memories of games we made up - impromptu to while away the summer... Thanks for the peek into the past!

  • Yay, another Michel cartoon! :-)
I love the dog, and the little details... the door at the back... the window and the bricks...
I am fascinated with studying the shells of the snails and how different they can be made to look by simple changes in the drawing.

I can imagine watching a snail race would take a great deal of time from the day... I love the 'sleeping cabbage'... from boredom of waiting to see a winner I presume. :-D

Your cartoons share the joys of your life with us. I love them. :-)

  • Love your cartoon that you drew! Fun! :-)
Snail races...a good memory from childhood! Helped to teach us patience! ;-) :-D
    HUGS!!! :-)

  • lol I have heard of a snail's pace, but not race. lol

  • what a fun memory! :)

  • GUESS WHAT?!?!
Today (Jan 21) is Nat’l Hug Day! YAY! :-)
    HUGS!!! :-)
Michel-HUGS!!! :-P (HUGS with your name on them!)
    HUGS for Janine!!! :-)
    More HUGS!!! :-P
    Extra HUGS!!! :-D
    HUGS + Infinity!!! :-)

  • Mornin Glorie...I have missed you and being here also! Love the drawing, you are so funny! ilym Marsha

  • In Hawai'i the cockroaches flourish because of the climate and get very large. People there have a sort of mixed repugnance and affection for them, and the quirkier ones breed them to keep as pets and hold competitions, including races.

  • Snail races! So funny! Is this the kind you eat too? I don't think we have snails that big on the farm, at least I've never seen one. Maybe the raccoons eat them? Love the drawing too. I should take lessons!

  • What a wonderful story! Do you remember Carlo and his friend Simon the spider? It could become a subject for a story, Your Snail <3
    Lots of love, Nancy

  • Thinking of you and Janine and praying for you!
Thank you for all of your fun, kind comments on my WordPress blog! :-)
    HUGS and Happy Whee-kend!!! :-)

  • Hi Michel, Maybe you can clear something up for me?
The reports of the four leaders.... Merkel, Hollande, Poroshenko, David Cameron.... being in France for the unity march are being questioned. What perspective do you have on the issue?
Thanks. I'd like some ammunition from the source, if there is any. :-D

    • I can only say that all of the states of Europe and also from the Middle East and Africa were present at this march of national unity to show solidarity with France, for once united and overcoming all political separations.
      .

  • Thanks Michel for your reply. There is so much disinformation out there. I am happy to know someone closer to the source so I may ask for good information.
    Someone had shared this article;
    http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2015-01-17/truth-behind-cherlie-hebdo-solidarity-photo-op
I don't know what to think. I know nothing of the source.

ryc: Coffee is not a sin... :-) but for me it is bad... it lowers my immune system defenses, so I must try to stay away from it. I drink tea. :-) ... and once in a while, as you say, a small cup of coffee. Frank makes me desire to have coffee every day because of his great love for it. :-)

Hope your week is off to a great start. :-D

  • Very well done the drawing.
Don't forget that the snail is carrying the Fibonacco sequencen on his back (goldenRatio). No need to go to school to learn.

    Carlo

  • Even the lowly snail is a creature who has a part in this world that God designed so perfectly. I must admit that the snails in my yard are not as large but they are quite a nuisance because they choose to dine on the leaves of my gerbera daisies and other pretty flowers....

  • Considering the mating habits of snails, I'd have to say they have the best of both worlds. Snails aren't a problem in my garden as I have a healthy population of predators.

  • I hope and Janine are feeling well and are having a good weekend!
    HUGS!!! :-)

  • i am sooo impressed you could explain all of that in english and in french. i love that you keep your brain going always. that's admirable and i want to follow in your footsteps. i've been lazy, playing games instead. ok i go do brain games now!!! love, ang

  • That is one handsome snail, if a snail may be handsome. I love the snail race cartoon!

  • I want to print your drawing and frame it up! It's beautiful!
