Allons en promenade en calèche
Let us go for a drive in an open carriage
English version after the French texts .
It was on the Easter Monday . I was told " Would you like driving in an open carriage " . Yes , of course and as you see I was the first in the carriage , ( first photo ) ready to go through the village to the fields and pastures all around .. I dreamed under my hat about the past time when my father during his holidays worked at the harvest with horse in the 40 ' s .. I prepared myself to live again with the horse paces rhythm ! And to smell the fields .

I was not alone long ( second photo ) . We were five in the carriage , the driver , and my grandson Nicolas at his side in the front seat . And on the rear seat there were my oldest daughter Carole who is a horses fan and me . Behind was standing up on a step another grandson Thomas . All of us looked happy . What still was normal 60 years ago in France for work and move is become an event and a pleasure .
But more and more people become interested in the horses breeding . Here it was a draught horse of the Boulonnaise breed . ( Boulogne is a town in Northen France )

I agree, simple pleasures are truly the best.
I love open carriages, too!
J'espere que ta semaine sera tres bonne!

I would love to do something like that - so enjoyable to be out riding with nature
Wonderful!!
open carriages are fantastic! we have some downtown and it's a really cool to see horses just walking around the streets! glad the whole family could enjoy the ride! have a good day michael!
-becky
The air and sun must have been lovely to feel on your skin, and the "clop clop clop" of the hooves very soothing.
Bonjour, Michel!
I have never rode in a horse-drawn carriage before, I don't believe. I have always wanted to!
It looks like a beautiful and scenic ride that you took. And what a lovely horse!
It is the simple pleasures that end up meaning the most...
Have a wonderful week! God bless.
ooooh! that looks lovely!
Very true...
Beautiful photo and you are having a wonderful day.
Horses are such lovely animals.
Be well, Michel
Clara
that is spectacular Michel...we need more moments like those in all of our lives...
Cher Michel,
J'ai des interviews (is that how you say it in French?) et j'attends les resultats.
Tu me manques!
Amities,
Clementine
In the Isle Of Man there are horse-drawn trams, which go along the promenade. Everyone loves to ride on them and when it was suggested that the tramway was closed there was an outcry so the horse still ply their trade.
BTW Prince Philip is renowned driver of horse carriages and wins international events. You are in royal company
and you look regal.

"Simple pleasures are the best"
Very true. It has been a while since I've been horseback riding, and I do not recall a time that I've ever ridden a horse drawn carriage. "Hay rides" are common in the Autumn in my part of the world. Traditionally they would have been pulled by horses, but mostly today passengers ride on a flat trailer covered with hay and pulled by a tractor.
Thank you for your kind comment! I have tried to come up with a response in French but it was not coming out right... i still have much to learn in the language.
I love reading your posts and especially looking at the beautiful pictures of France and of your beautiful family.
May God bless you!
Friendship.
Megane
what wonderful fun it must have been! I love the pics!
Oh, wow! That looks like so much fun! I think I'll surprise my fiance' with a carriage ride one summer night this year.

Some of your pictures (like these) remind me of my childhood in Virginia. Just the landscape and the buildings-sometimes. *sigh* I will be going there in 11 days!
I have never been in a horse carriage too . What a great treat it was for you
and a treat for us to see our Michel having such fun
You look very " dapper " in your hat riding in the carriage . What fun for your daughter and grandchildren as well
PS my first job when I get back from visitng the USA is to book our sailings and hotel in Boulogne as it will only be then about 8 weeks before we come and see you
The horses are coming back a little, not so much as working horses but for fun. Why not? Must have a very nice idea to do this again.
The pictures are great. ( That is not something new)
my time just slowed down while reading your blog. a lovely respite. thank you.
Your writings are always the best. Thank you so much for sharing.
Wonderful pictures and ride! We would all do well to live at the pace of horses instead of cars. I agree that simple pleasures are the best.

it is very enjoyable to ride in a horse drawn carriage. i went on one before and it was lovely.
horse-buggies are so cool! im trying out for the videography part, where we make movies and such, but im not really sure which i want to do more, nysssa or si... ill figure it out!
<3ashera
Thank you for stopping by to visit with me. You are so kind. You have a great life it seems. I envy you but thank God he has blessed you. I would like to visit your country one day God willing I will. God Bless Dorothy
-juli
Such a nice way to spend a day. I love riding in carriages. We have some on St Armands Circle on a key(island) not too far from where I live in Central Florida. I try to get out there and have a ride several times a year. The pictures look so inviting. Thank you for sharing them.
Have a wonderful, joyous week, friend Michel.
(((hugs))) and smiles ~~ Char
Great story! @-}-}-
As always, your pictures paint a wonderful story to be enjoyed. I love your last line, yes, simple pleasures are the best. When I visited Quebec I noticed a carriage ride but was unable to take advantage. One I regret.
Thanks, Michel.
I love horse drawn carriages. When I lived in Memphis we saw many of them every weekend in the downtown area. Now that I live in the country I only see the horses but not the carriages.
You are royalty. It's obvious by how well you comport yourself in the grip of simple pleasures!
And regarding your comment: There were others, with equally potent, public shadows in the sun. Menachim Begin, Reagan, Torrijoes. All now on the other side. But that's many, many years ago. I believe I have totally disconnected from the endangering energy that enwrapped my soul with their fate . It's time to enjoy life, is it not, my friend?!
I now simply bathe in the sunlight, rejoicing, and surrender all else to the embrace of the enjoining night.
Oh! That looks like so much fun. I bet your ancestors would laugh to see that this is your pleasure ride, wouldn't they?
The driver looks as if he is having as much fun as anyone.
Simple pleasures are, indeed, the best. Sounds like fun! I wanna ride in one.
I love your hat, my friend. I want one.
~Derrol
Wow. I can imagine how that simple pleasure would tickle you.
Thanks for sharing.
I've been having many simple pleasures too.
ahh ! ça c'est mieux qu'une Citroën

Simple pleasures ARE the BEST!!!
Your family and yourself look like you had so much fun!!!
*hugs* ^_^!!!
i love your Xanga.
Can't get enough of it..^_^
In Friendship..*hugs*!!
In the first photo, you appear so debonair! Everyone in the second photo, in joy at enjoying a simple pleasure. Horses are so beautiful. Simple pleasure in nature.
il semble vraiment un plaisir.
mais, je suis effrayé des chevaux.
you sure know how to live. i hope you had a nice bottle of wine to keep adults all warm. namaste!
Oh YES! Simple pleasures ARE the best Michel! Some days I think I should love to be back in the days of the horses pulling a carriage. Even though the work was more difficult, the relaxing was more complete I think. Have a great day!
Hugs and love,
Deb
Michel, this is what I call "making lasting memories" so you have some pleasant thoughts for all your remaining days when your memory becomes your best friend! What a glorious time you had! I salute you!
How cool is that? At first when I saw the words 'open carriage' I thought it might be a French reference to a convertible vehicle. But no, it really is an old style open carriage. Looking at the photo's I can see what Henry Ford saw, in that this carriage somehow needs more horsepower to go faster and farther. He musthave thought "Hey , how can I turn this into a horselss carriage?"
Anyway, your photographs provoke all kinds of thoughts from folks around the world. Janine takes fabulous photo's. Kudos to her.
It looks like fun was had by all! Thanks for sharing.
u cant really see horses here except in racecourses... and thats not sth i really like. glad to see ur having fun with ur family!
This sort of thing I love, Michel!
These are really lovely photos of you all in the open carriage.
I remember years ago when Glenn's grandmother was staying here, we went for a ride in a covered carriage in The Rocks, and we just loved it! Like yourself, I like the smell of horses.
I used to own a pony when I was a young girl, and used to love sniffing her face. Sounds funny I know, but I love the smell of horses too.
Thanks for your very kind message on my last blog.
Your wishes to me are very much appreciated.
It is great to ride in a horse drawn carriage. How old was your grandson? He looks like an adult.. Do you have a lot of grandkids?
M&M's are little chocolate candies...do you not have them in france? they are about the size of a dime and covered with a hard color candy shell. but yes i agree with the part of balancing our diets...the world is out of control! have a good day Michael!
-becky
oh yes! simple pleasure are quite often the best!!! it looks like you had a wonderful day out!! i would have enjoyed that ride very much!
That looks like fun! I think I rode in a carriage once when I was a kid.
"Les plaisirs les plus simples sont les meilleurs."
Je suis d'accord avec ca!
Oh, how you've made me smile! Grandfather, I would wish to be there in the carriage with you... such a wonderful thing. Blessings, many many blessings, to you and your family.
~Paloma
you are right Michael. I am in a good mood today. Even if it's rainy and overcasty outside I think my mood is really bright. I sing in our church choir. There are over 300 singers and I'm a 1st alto. Me and some of my girlfriends joined in August and we love it. Thanks for your interest. Have a good day!
-becky
Michel, you are just too cute~!
love, janny
I rode in a carriage in downtown dallas once. It was really nice. I am truly a horse lover and enjoyed the pictures very much! I think that the beauty is lost in a way due to the invention of the cars.. That and the smell and such of the horses, alwyas very comforting.
-the rachael
That is a beautiful horse.
You take lovely pictures, Michel; it is always a pleasure to read your entries. (:
Dear Michel,
The carriage reminds me of a trip I took over in Belgium. My friends there had a wagon with a cover. We spent a lovely afternoon driving out through the woods to a lake. It was a good day well spent! I can see by your pictures that you enjoyed yourself as well. Thank you for bringing up good memories. - Rachel
I have looked at your pictures and your face and read your heart. Now I have to speak to you. You are a beautiful person who obviously enjoys his life and looks for more life to enjoy.
I LOVE IT!!!!
Such a cute little town
Simple pleasures ARE the best!!! I totally agree!!
HY U !LOL!!!
The French Countryside looks like the English ,and a carriage ride , many years since I have had one of those, then i expect it was at some seaside place. I wish I had looked at France a bit more when we drove through it ,but there was that bomb business at the time when France was letting them off in our area ,and a ship was sunk. We had Australia on the back of our van ,and the people were not very friendly in fact i never met one congenial French person at any place I stayed ,pity we didn't get to Amiens, and meet you. as you are the only Frech person, apart from a friend of mine's Mother in the war, and she was a real tartar ,a fat little dumpling. She married a blind English man during WW1, then left him .I was a friend of the daughter ,and we used to take the Father to the Cinema and whisper to him what it was all about. seemed a mad thing for us to do. I did stay with the Mother a couple of leaves, but shhe was not as friendly as her poor deserted husband ,he lived in Reading she in Southampton. I wonder why I have bored you with that tidbit. I have found you charming. Can Janine speak English incidentally, or write it Love marjie

wow, all the way from france, you have nice pictures sir.
I enjoyed your photos good sir.
Hi Michel. It looks like you had a nice time in the carriage. My sister and I , and my husband and his son went for a carriage ride around Philadelphia a few years back. It was so much fun....and we got to see so much that we couldn't take the time to see in a car. I would love to do it again.
What a beautiful experience! I'm glad someone had a camera handy to photograph you in the carriage.
You look so content...and the next picture shows a carriage filled with love...your family...you are truly blessed...and I am glad it brought to your mind memories of your past...life is to be enjoyed and you do so enjoy it...many huggs...Sassy
What a delightful experience. I am not sure that all of the modern ways are an improvement on our quality of life.
Many horses are bred and raised in the nearby valley here of Santa Ynez. A drive, even in a car, through the valley is most restful. You see many vineyards and large ranches with horses. The valley is very green with many ancient live oak trees. There is one winery where they have a place to have a picnic by the vineyard. Generally some friends and I go there in the summer for a relaxing afternoon.
Carol Suzanne
It is true that the simple pleasures warm the heart and bring peace to the soul. If people would just slow down and enjoy the simple things the world gives us. I need to stop, look, listen and enjoy!
awww..thank you for the belated wishes. it's nice to be remembered on days other than the "actual" day...you are great!
have a wonderful day...
For me, anything that has to do with horses is pleasurable.
Wow! If I ever visit France, that is exactly what I would like to do!
Simple Pleasures are the true ones...
http://www.riversongs.com/Flash/cute.html
I wish I could find that here where I live. It just simply isn't possible in California. Californians have to drive everywhere they go, no matter how close it is. Keep it copasetic. Peace.
Dear Michel... how true, simple pleasures are indeed the best, life is the wrong way round, we should be born old and wise and reverse into young and silly. What do you think?!!!.
You look so dapper in that first photo Michel. I agree that as much as I love modern conviences, generally it is the simple things that make me happiest.
Yes, I like to keep things simple
How amazing and what a lovely way to celebrate life. I was sitting outside enjoying the TN sunshine today. With all of our wonderful Dogwood trees in bloom I couldn't help but think that my friend Michel would love the view. I will continue to enjoy it for you. Hugs for a wonderful weekend.
How wonderful that you got to ride in an open carriage! I had that opportunity once in Kansas City, in a beautiful carriage shaped like the one from Cinderella
Although it was fun, I highly doubt the scenery was as pretty as it is there!
<3
I came by your site through another, so I would like to say hello and my adjective for this is "beautiful".
hope u have many mor eof these smiple pleasures, takes an uncomplicated person to enjoy those!
thanks for ur belief in me michel. that is very very nice of u!
Michel, thank you for sharing a wonderful memory and building on the memory of your father. It is such a gift to be able to share important parts of our life with our children isn't it. Have a wonderful weekend.
Simple pleasures really are the best aren't they!!! I have always believed in this idea very stongly.
With all the beauty of the fields and the town along with the mesmorizing gait of the horse, I can see how it would be hard not to dwell on the things of the past. To get in touch with the thigs that once were.
Draft horses are magnificant aren't they!!
Big Hug and Love
Sarah
PS- Thank you for the warm wishes you sent on my birthday!!! It is so nice to know that I have a friend like you!! You have a special place in my heart dear friend !
Clara
*une
*sigh* what a beautiful way to spend a day. I love draft horses probably more than any other breed, I don't know why. They seem like such gentle giants. Thank you for sharing this today...it makes me dream of taking a ride like that.
Hugs,
Lisa
oh...about my blog with the crayon, I just put a silly name for the color: the color of pus which is really disgusting. I have a crazy sense of humor sometimes.
Thank you for your kind words. I am so glad that you visited me today. I have read your site many times and am touched by the photos of your lovely family and warm moments expressed through the camera's lens.
Your grand daughters are so lovely. If only we could stop time.
that does look like a wonderful simple pleasure
Have a great weekend!
~*Sazzy*~
Simple pleasures are neglected sometimes... but once you get to enjoy it... wow. it's amazing.
That sure looks like fun I'd love to go for a buggy ride God Bless sweety.

Well I came by today to catch up on some of the comments on your site. It seems like you generate more comments than most. Your readers are eloquent for the most part too. Then I realized there were 99 comments and I could be the lucky number 100. So here is your 100th comment! I wish I could think of something really profound to say.
So let me repeat my favorite line from a song ...............
"All you get to keep are the memories, You gotta make the good ones last."
From: Somewhere In The Night by The Michael Stanley Band
You have a charmed life thanks for sharing it thru your eyes magi
A step from the past, reminds me of a child and looking after a dray, it was still pulled by a horse in the fifties.
You are so right. Simple pleasures are the best. It looks like you had a wonderful time.
I like your site...french and english. I have been wanting to learn to speak french for the longest time.
You are most definately not an idiot Michel!! Perhaps I wasn't clear enough on where the link was. The link you were looking for is http://www.asphotos.com.au
I hope you had a good weekend.
Cher Michel,
Qu'est-ce que c'est <>? Est-ce qu'il n'est pas <> ou bien, <> (or am I just making up my own verbs and tenses?!). Hate est de le verbe Hair, non? Or, does it just translate into I MUST KNOW even though hate mean hate en anglais?
Amities,
Clementine
I would love to have your last name. In America it would get mispronounced sometimes...But I would like that.
Michel you and I think so alike in many ways - must be why I've always thought the world of you...I tell people all the time that it's the little things that mean the most in life - those you can only take with you in your mind and share within our hearts.
What a wonderful day with your family.
I've been meaning to ask you how your gardens look this year. It's so beautiful in North Carolina this time of year the dogwoods, tulips and azaleas are in full bloom!
i work in an advertising agency in kentucky. i do public relations for them. last week we had 1100 packets to stuff with our client's product and information for a training session they were having...OUCH! i have way too many papercuts...but it's a new week and it's done! have a good day
becky
I will keep trying...it is hard because I don't know anyone who speaks it therefore I'm not sure if I say it correctly. I was considering taking a college course to learn. I thank you for leaving such pleasant comments on my xanga.
simple pleasures are the best and the healthiest... a great way to travel, sight see and enjoy the day.. Keep enjoying the simple things (and sharing them with us is so nice of you too
)
I agree simple pleasures are to treasure . What did you do with your weekend.? Mine was a good one. I did think of you but in a good way I mean no desrespect to your wife. Life where I live is rough and not getting any better. God Bles you and yours Dorothy
Simple pleasures..... how very true! Such great pictures and you all look like you had a wonderful time. I rode in a horse drawn carriage one time.... all around downtown Dallas, Texas. Actually, it was a lot of fun. Simple pleasures..... went to a Trade Days this weekend and thought of a post you had a while back about a sort of Fair event. This was a simple thing..... people selling their products, crafts, homemade jellies, etc. It was nice. Hope you are having a wonderful week. Blessings, kc
It does look like you all are enjoying yourselves. Wish we had something like that here. Take care of yourself and you beautiful family and God Bless You All.
Hey sweety Oh it was a lovely day here today i think spring is going to finally stick around ... hope by me saying that I don't jinxs it lol Hope you and yours are all well God Bless
http://media.euniverse.com/www_castlemountains_net/images/04_2003/aprr29i.jpg
Indeed! Simple pleasures are the best! Thanks Michel for writing this lovely post. I have always seen those horses and carriages around various parts of Italy but never thought to actually go on a ride. Now I think I should consider the next opportunity when it comes!
I'd be the first one in that buggy too
what fun!!
What a beautiful horse! Looks like a really fun day. A lot of European horses are getting popular in the states. Of course I will always be partial to Percherons!!
Sure hope all is EXCELLENT! With you guys!!!! My best,
Love,
Livia, Solon, Bunzilla! and Rommie
What a lovely way to spend an afternoon! Thank you for sharing your adventure with us.
I bet it was fun. Who knew something so simple can be much be appreciated by individuals, like us, who continue to live in such modernazation thinking that our techonologies make lives more simple.
*the picture of Paul are there, or photobucket was probably down when you check on the site. I apologize for that.
Yes, the simple pleasures are the best. Your grandchildren, a beautiful day, sharing, riding in a lovely carriage, enjoying your surroundings.....what more could you ask for? Janine's pictures are beautiful. Ahh the size of that horse. So big. Blessings to you and yours.
Thank you for the nice comment on my blog. The ILPC convention is a gathering of all the high school and some middle and junior high schools' journalism departments in the capitol of Texas. We gather on a college campus, University of Texas in Austin. At the convention, there are booths representing businesses that have products we use, the best of the contest entries are all on display, awards are given and there are sessions (or classes) with speakers. The convention lasts 2 days. I was asked to be a speaker and chosen to give 2 classes. Hope that helps explain it. Have a great day. Blessings, kc
So sorry I've taken 4 days to reply to your comment! I've always loved the word 'debonair,' use it whenever it's possible. There are many beautiful French words, sometimes more succinct than English. I am not from Washington state--I am from Minneapolis, Minnesota, where we can get extremes in our weather. Hope that you write soon!!
How I would have loved to be sitting there enjoying that wonderful ride with everyone. It would bring back so many pleasant memories of my childhood. I used to help load hay in the hot sun, just so I could ride on the wagon each time about a half mile up the road, where the barn was located. Then I would help unload the hay, just so I could ride back to the field.
Two or three other children helped for the same reason. The farmer was very happy that we were willing to help him get in his winter's crop. I do not think he realized what wonderful memories he was helping us make, or that we were getting the best part of the deal. You are so right. Simple pleasures are the best!
i absolutely love that you did this! i would love it if we could all slow down and travel like this more often! =)
In this age of technology simple is hard to come by. When we slow down and try it is when we see just how much we are truly missing.
Salut Michel!
