The old rusted tray./ At 4 year old I practiced the scooter!
Le vieux plateau rouillé
The old rusted tray . 1er Avril 2014
English version below the picture
Since March 2006 I still have in my personal office this old rusty tray proudly exhibited. I found it during the move of my father in Law. It was going to be thrown in the bin . But suddenly I told myself : " stop and look at the picture ! " Indeed the tray was about 40 years old but the decoration was an old English advertising for a seller of road skates ( patin - cycles ) ancestors of our roller skates .
How old this advertising was ? According the clothes of the woman it was necessary before 1914 since the skirt was long . And for the man the suit could be from this time . I had to do some research of the history of the feminine fashion since the XIX th century until 2006 !!! This goes with the evolution of the woman rights . Before 1914 women were allowed to practice a few sports only whom road skating . So , you see , this tray was a true lesson of history ! And I don' t speak of the landscape on the picture which would be to study closer .
I am not sure the House Ritter still does exist 271 Oxford street in London . Perhaps ??? Perhaps some of my readers may check it . I find out most of rollers nowadays are made in Taiwan or India . But I believe the name Ritter has still something to do with rollers skating or boarding . Would not be wonderful the manufactory still exist ? Please could you verify ?
And look at the equipment . It already was 2 wheels inline with sole and wheels ,special shoes and thongs to firmly hold the all . You will remark those British people are perfectly outfitted ( as always ) .
Poor woman she must sweat a lot under her clothes ! And the man too !! But what a elegance .!! Typically old British fashionable . It seems the man looks at his partner with loving eyes . Don't he ? With a swaggering and attentive air ? The lady turns her head and looks shy . Dare I say she thinks skating is the better mean to fall …..in love !

At 4 year old I practiced the scooter!
Photo 1937 . As you see I prcticed the scooter with energy!!
Comme vous voyez je pratiquais le trotinnette ave énergie
At 4 year old ... (1937) I practiced scooter while wood including wheels and handlebar. It wasn't easy there with pebbles on the ground and somehow I' ve never been a fan of this kind of mode of transport. You will notice the apron worn by boys at that time (at least until high school where they were gray) and long hair. Moms loved to see their boys with long hair until 6-7 years and mine were silky and curly. When it was time to cut them cut my mother kept them in an envelope with a sigh . Precious maternal love ! Then a modern version happened with larger ruber tire wheels and propulsed by pressing a pedal. But then I prefered the bicycle

This is an amazing photo and the first pair of roller blades.
Must have been so uncomfortable gliding along wearing all of that finery.
Ty so very much for your prayers for Johnathan's family and loved one, on the day of his memorial service.
How interesting...I couldn't find any current information on the Road Skate Co. but I did find some information ...you were close on the date, the article said 1896, another article said they had moved to 77 oxford Street so they would have more room, they offered free trials and testimonies.. Another article said "When last heard of (1929) Mr. Ritter was in business as an engineer in Paris under the name of Ritter and Smith, 35 Rue Batignolles. (These premises are now occupied by a hair salon ‘Caroline Coiffure’)". I'd bet the tray has a good value! ILYM
That's nice that mlbncsga wrote that above. i can go check what is there on oxford st next time because i go often, more than your other readers, i'm sure! hahah michel, i am disappointed! u didn't go see my post! i did it after you urged me. <3 good nite!!!
Very interesting! They look like little bicycles on their shoes! I enjoyed your observations about the picture on the tin. That is quite a treasure!

Here's a link on the company, the history, etc. http://www.oldbike.eu/museum/bikes-1800s/1896-1899-diamond-frames/1896-ritter-skates-the-road-skate-co/
RYC on my site: Grandpa & I were both so surprised & pleased that Tristen knew this already!
She & Mike really enjoy teasing each other!
♥Love,
Carolyn
You pose many questions and I do not have any answers! It is off to the internet to google this and see if I can help unravel the mystery!
It is a great wonder to see how mankind changes with time, clothing, hobbies and habits, entertainment and so on and so on.
How interesting one's life would be if we could live to see centuries pass instead of mere decades. Thankfully there are those who came before us and left us these intriguing records of their days.
It is why the picture on this old rusted tray may be considered like a historical document in its way!
What a romantic you are. I share your sentiments. What a lovely lot you got out of a simple old tray.
and my first thought was the very thing you mention... the original inline skates... amazing! They look like little bicycles under their feet.
Hope you are having an amazing day.
Blessings,
Lynn
Oooh, I forgot, I wanted to ask... do you play pranks today... celebrate April's fools day. I heard them talking today on the radio, about the origins, and France was mentioned.
In the past April 1st was pranks' day and even now the children try to make someone believe something not true and when they see that the person is caught they cry "first of April!"
Other times people managed to hook a paper fish on the back of a coat of someone in order he walks it everywhere. That was pretty hilarious.
I'm not sure that this tradition is as alive now.
I love seeing old things ~ so interesting ~
Good Evening, Michel That is a delightful tray----it is sure worth keeping and doing the research.
Blessings
frank
Ty so very much for your comment on my post about a day in town and yes it was expensive after I paid bills and bought supplies but then nothing in this world is free.
Have a wonderful rest of the week.
Ty so very much of your comment on my post and photo of the pink rhodie.
I would of held onto the tray as well. I have an old CocaCola tray Wil's sister had. I know reproductions have been made of those so don't know if it is one.
ryc: It helped you put your url in your comment. I apologize I've spent so much time getting everything back on my computer and trying to learn Windows 7 that I don't even get to all my Paint Shop Pro groups.
and now the problems with the yards, ours and daughters.
I don't mind dressing modest but those are a lot of clothes.
My grandbaby wanted to take a nap. that is the only time he gets his pacey. Pacifier or as I call it the brand name Nuddy.
A treasure indeed! I would keep it for generations to come. And I love the way you have analyzed the picture.
Ty very much for your comment on my photo of rust<:)
Wow! Have you ever had that tray appraised? If not, and you decide to do so, you might be surprised on how much it would be worth now....
I've just done some checking, and the Company is still in existence (Roller Skate Co.), but it has been sold, or so it said, 2 years ago...
I downloaded some pictures for you, I wonder if I can put one here? Hum......Nope...But I will down load them on a posting for you.... Amazing!!
simple comme bonjour ... I loved the film, thank you so very much! ilym
Very interesting. You caused me to rearch Frank Ritter and road skates. I learned a lot.
Hard to believe each skate weighed 40 lbs!

Thank you, John , for this precious link that confirms my déductions starting from the clothes . 1897 ! It is really the history!
C'est vrai qu'ils ont du style! Very British!!!
Et un petit plateau précieux contant toute une époque!
A conserver soigneusement!

I have the same types of thoughts when I look at old things. I have my husband's great-grandmother's rolling pin and there are still little flecks of flour in some of the cracks and I wonder what she was making the last time she used it.
"Inanimate objects do you have a soul "said the poet Lamartine. It is true that some old objects or tools carry with them traces of past activities and make us relive very tender memories.
I love the 4 year old you! Too cute! I can relate to the hair in the envelope - I think all mothers do that (save hair in envelopes)!
I can't imagine trying to road-skate with only two wheels on each foot. I don't even know how to roller-skate with four wheels on each foot!
Ah, but I do love the bicycle as well.
that is a cute little guy.
how many kids in your family?
with 8 kids we had one used bike and we all used it after Christmas.
We used to trick the kids in the neighborhood and cheat them out of their bike, scooter and whatever.
you have to be smart with a bunch of kids in the family.
I was the only child but Janine and I got 6 children.
What an awesome picture of you, Michel! You look very determined!
And that tray is certainly a portal to the past. What a great find. I'm glad it didn't end up in the garbage bin.
Hope all is well! Cheers!!
so wonderful to be able to revisit the past!
Such a very cute little boy you were! The picture makes me smile. I too found it difficult to see those first curls cut from my two little boys! We Moms are a sentimental lot!
I love the old picture and scooter! I had a hard time giving my boys their first haircut too.
I saved some curls but where in the world did I put them?! I have no idea!
Hope your week-end is wonderful!
awww ~ just adorable! love the scooter too ~
Nothing compares to a mother's love.
It seems that Mr Ritter, the inventor of these skates, ended up in Paris!

Great stories!
Ty so very much of your comment on my post about murdering my vacuums cleaner.
that little boy just loves Pop; he always has.
You know Michel, my brothers had a wooden scooter exactly like that, and they would go around the courtyard on it.
Oh my gosh! What a adorable picture!!
I remember having a scooter such as the one in your picture! I wasn't as pretty as you, tho, Michel. Mom threw my hair away! Sob..Sob..
Just kidding!
Your post brought lots of interesting comments. Good for you!
Aw!You were an adorable little boy!
This was a joy to read...brought back childhood memories of skates, scooters, popo-sticks, etc.
HUGS!!!
Maybe deep down myself this "adorable" little boy still exists.?? hmm! Who knows ??
what a great find the tray is/was. And the photo of the scooter....so cute. What a great photo to pass on to the younger generations and how similar we all are the world over. Every boy loves to ride scooters, I wish I could still ride one.
not my booth but I spied the rabbits so got a phone.
The rabbits are plastic like a bank. Not sure if it has a light bulb inside like Santa Clause does in the attic.
yes, I believe there are three in one because that is the way I was taught was a kid.
There were a lot of things that I just grew up accepting and I'm not one to argue about it -I just believe cause that is what I know.
I never really thought about it tell I saw this special on public t.v.
It is a best seller book, too. Professor Sharma? I believe his name is.
TY for your comment on my photos of tulips blooming in the town square.
Ty so very much of your comments on my post about TD and I having a day out.
Ty so very much on your kind comments on my photo post of myself on the viewing dock on the channel of the chehalis.
My friend Vi took the photo.
I think that is my usual hair style. LOL maybe it was just colored lighter to cover the gray.
I notice that a lot of my favorite songs have become commercials and I think one of meatloafs was one. I like the one called,"I won't do that,"
more graceful. LOL I don't think that scotter makes me more...
