La faïence de Quimper en Bretagne
The faience ( glazed earthenware ) of Quimper in Brittany
English version below the pictures
La ville de Quimper en Bretagne The town of Quimper in Brittany ( France ) Photo Janine Fauquet 2005
During our stay in Brittany ( western France ) , we had a day for visiting Quimper , a so much beautiful town . Its splendid gothic cathedral ( XIIIth centurie ) dedicaced to St Corentin and its old streets gave to us a feeling of sweetness and old civilization .
-----------------

Le vieux plat breton plus que centenaire The more than 100 years old Britton plate Photo M Fauquet2005
In Quimper there are , for long , faience ( glazed earthenware )manufactories and there is a Quimper style for the handmade decoration . We visited one of those manufactories and bought a teapot that shows this style . We already have a salad bowl like that for our current using and a more than old year old large plate of britton faience showing a marriage and armorial bearings ( perhaps the ones of the renowned Duchess Anne de Bretagne who lived in the XVth century or perhaps the ones of the Britton order of the ermine with the device " A MA VIE " that means : to my life or He has my life ? ). This recalls the English order of the Garter of which the device is written in French " hon(n)i soit qui mal y pense " that means : evil be to him who evil thinks . Those orders of the knighthood have been created at the same period ( XIV century ) , I think .
-------------
In this composition you see in the background the teapot and the Britton plate
On the foreground you see on the left a Strasbourg style pot and on the
right a Lunéville style soup tureen Photo - composition M. Fauquet 2005
I attempted a photo - composition with some of the pieces of faience we own . This composition surprises me by the freshness of the colors . There is a France of cheeses ,wines , castles but also of faiences . Many towns have their style of faience : Rouen , Marseille , Nevers , Strasbourg , Lunéville ,Giens , Le Moustiers etc …
We eat better in using a fine earthenware , in a perfume of history …..

welcome back Michel!!!!! those are BEAUTIFUL pictures!!!! I love the town!!! and the china
were you a photographer? Your pictures are so gorgeous! I certainly can't take pictures like that!
Have a great week and God bless you and Janine(HUGS)
i love the architecture. i want to visit all over europe because i think almost everything is beautiful there.

Its great to see you back Michel
What a wonderful place Quimper is . I love all the pottery esp the teapot . In fact we were talking about you today at the family lunch we had for Adrian who is over from the IOM we were telling him about the wonderful time we had with both of you
Your composition picture is very nice. I agree, food is better when it is beautifully served!
Welcome back!
That is a very happy surprise, Michel is back. Hurray for Michel.
We have moved to a nice loft in Bruxells and we are worn out for the move. 22 trips to get our stuff.
It seems the The French have a big love for the faïnce, I hade some example in Strasbourg , in Luneville, in Grass and now I see it in Bretagne too.
We can just afford Ikea stuff nowadays and it is nit french , nor sweedish, not Italian. But we are happy.....well we try.
Thank you goddessladyj for the precision .
Beautiful pictures of beautiful items.
You have been missed, my friend.
Yes food does taste best on fine plates. I have gone to some wonderful parties and they use paper plates with fantastic food but it is not hte same taste. I think it is wonderful to serve food in elegant dinner ware.
Thoughts through my looking glass~
Lovely photos ~ the streets are like going back in time~
Glad to see you back! I'd missed your thoughtful posts. They always make me smile.
so beautiful, Michel
)
i grew up near Strasburg, IL. the town was named after Strasbourg {which used to be in Germany, right?}
so how are things? I miss you when you're gone.

The wine is important but the glass is also important but most of all the company is the most important.
What is the saying in french?
Welcome back.
I love the teapot. It is very beautiful.
carlo is exactly right. it wouldnt be perfume if you didnt smell it first and share with us the details of your thoughts!
good to see you back, my freiend! thanks for sharing such wonderful things again...
Oh, you're back. I have missed you so much. The pottery is so awesome. LOVE the tea pot. I would love to collect tea pots, but I just don't have the room. I have a few, but shouldn't get anymore.
Wow. You make me want to visit France now. That earthenware looks expensive.
Bonjour, Michel!
I do so much want to go to France one day. Your pictures make my want and need more evident.
You shall be getting your Christmas card soon. I found one in French just for you! It was not too hard to find one here in Canada!
Have a great weekend! God bless.
Happy December. Happy you are back. Lovely dishes but I would be afraid to use them for anything other than admiration. I tend to be a bit clumsy
Sending love to you and Janine
I have missed you Michel. I hope that everything is going well with you.
December Greetings. I hope you have a lovely preparation for Christmas.
I love this what you shared today. Lovely old castle and beautiful street of old buildings in Quimper. I love the plate and the teapot is wonderful. (One cannot find a teapot in the US. I tried to find a new one for my mother. They do not sell them)
I love the photo collage you made. very nice!!

I hope you and Janine are doing very well.
Rosemary
i love earthenware and china! especially tea pots. i used to collect them when i was living in seattle.
i hope all's going well!
Looks wonderful!

Emily
It is good to have you back. I hope your eyes are feeling better. You must take good care of them, because it is a great loss if we lose our eyesight.
Many years ago I had four plates from Quimper. Unfortunately they were lost. I do have my grandmother's china from Limoge. I use it only for the most special occasions. Until a few years ago there were a number of factories in the United States making earthenware. It was also painted by hand, and brought delight to those who owned it. For some reason most, if not all, of the pottery factories here are now closed. As a little girl, maybe 9 years old, my class took a trip to one. I remember how interesting it was to see the earthenware being made.
Carol
I saw that you had commented on Englishjuls site, and thought, "Wonderful! Michel is back", and rushed over here.
If I had to choose one of the earthenware pieces, I would have a hard time doing so. They are all so beautiful.
The spire of the cathedral in Quimper towers over the buildings in the picture. It must be beautiful inside, too.
Welcome back, Michel!
Great to hear from you. I have a couple of tea pots that look very close to the one in your posting. .It is very old and I do treasure it. Great to spend some time with you here . Have missed you God Bless
So glad you are back. You were missed, Michel.
Your pictures delight me and your thoughts inspire me. Thank you very much. I love to serve with fine china. It makes everything look and taste better.
Much love to you and Janine.
Beautiful!!!
Love the pictures. The town reminds me so much of France. And the teapot and other items are just so very lovely. I will be returning to France in March next year and I am looking forward to it so much. Blessings, kc And BTW, glad you are back.
Hello Michel and welcome back!
What a beautiful place this is, and I adore the pottery. The teapot is especially pretty and it has real "character". You know Michel, the thing I love most about many of the pictures you post here of towns and villages, are the cobbled or paved streets. They really are beautiful.
I never fail to learn something from you, Michel! Ahhhhhhh, the beauty of the conveyance! If the pot is lovely, so is the dish, eh?
My family emigrated from Basil, Switzerland, so very near the border of France. Did I ever tell you that?
Hope you holiday is more wonderful than ever!
I have never heard of this faience thing. china makes me think of china!! seems there are many gothic buildings in france!! i rmr in one of ur other posts there was another gothic church.
beautiful views. I have been thinking of something else parallel...
Glad to see your post and the lovely pictures from your recent trip. Many blessings this holiday season! Love, Boston
What a quaint village and such beautiful serving dishes! Thanks for sharing. I love reading your site.
Welcome Back Michel. Those are beautiful pieces you own. That was an interesting photograph you created with the four of them together.
We have different photographs on our site now. Check them out if you'd like.

Great photos.
Beautiful teapot.
Lovely earthenware items Faquet. Very nice to see where you've visited on your trip away.
What lovely earthern ware, I used to collect teapots in fact all pottery but not able to now I would have liked to have seen Quimper as i have just said to matt we missed so much of France rushing to get to Sapin which he liked i wasn't so keen but we loved Switzerland Glad you are feeling a lot better take care of your eyes love Marjie

Welcome back Michel, I agree completely with you, to eat , to drink from fine earthenware, the scent of history, with its fresh colours and elegance.but not only. Even contemporary earthenwares and ceramics have their charm, unfortunately modernisation /globalisation has introduced plastics and paper for everyday which become habitual, such a pity.
RITA
Wonderful as usual, I see. Whenever I read your Xanga, I have this urge to learn to speak French.
hiya michel, oh im so sorry.. all the posts are already protected anyway, i already added you to my protected list.. hmm, leaving hong kong is so excited but leaving the Philippines made me sad to leave like this.. well, i don't know but i love to travel er.. it's my first time to go out of the Philippines but im sure i hope my parents would give me more traveling hehe.. oh, the profile picture wasn't me.. it's my favorite korean actress.. i do not want to expose my self pictures coz' people might know me so that they will leave hate comments er but im afraid so.. so how are you now? how's your eyes? is it ok? mucha love!
You're welcome michel! I find you as a nice friend that's why I added you to my protected list and you will see my family pictures tomorrow.. Good night my friend!
Rina
i always learn something new when i read your entries, thank you. and your pictures are always so beautiful. i'm glad you're back!
Love the pictures!
Bonjour Michel!
I would love to walk down such a street. More of us over here need to walk.
I like the teapot and soup tureen the best. I'm very fond of teapots. Only own a couple though, plain old American ones.
Good morning, Michel!!! It is wonderful to have you back, you have been missed. I hope your eyes are doing much better now.
I love the beautiful pictures of faience that you have taken. To me, the plate is especially beautiful, but I love all of them. I would love to serve soup in that nice Tureen.
I believe that I would enjoy it much more, then served from just the pot that it was cooked in...
As to your comment, you are right. I did cook the turkey and I will be eating leftovers today-maybe a turkey, stuffing and cranberry sauce sandwich with mayonaise-yummy.
My hands are doing great right now, if I don't overdo. Let's hope they stay that way.
Love

aww thats so beatuiful hope your eyes are feeling better and rested sweety God Bless.

Brittany really does look like a beautiful town to visit. My grandmother would be interested in the dishes that you have, she also collects teapots. Last time I asked her she said she had over 100 of them!
A beautiful teapot. I was given French porcelain for my 21st birthday...a long time ago ....and it sits pride of place with my treasure. I am new to xanga so didnt know you had gone but now you are back
Lovely snapshots as usual...I have a few teapots, I started collecting, then my collections got to be too much. I just have this need of tea pots and things that pour out ha. Hope your eyes are better and glad to see you back. Take care of them.
Love, Brenda
Salut mon ami!
It is late so I won't try writing in French. One day when I finally move out of my parents house, I want to collect beautiful plates, and cups and china, like what you have there!

Michel, I am so glad that you are with us again!!! i so hope your eyes are doing better,, Love the wares.....I hope you and your family have a great Christmas,,,, I so hope that it is better in France than here now,, People no longer want to call christmas trees, they do not want to celebrate the Birth of Christ,,, trees are now holiday trees instead of christmas trees,, I so remember life being easier ,, dont you,,, en amistad
So glad you are back. As you know, I've been busily unpacking while Carlo got to play on the computer!
We are finally finished. I love your photos, they bring back warm memories of our trip to Bretagne.
But isn't it just a little bit evil to think "evil be to him who evil thinks"? He or she that first imagined the concept of evil was a genius. And the first evil genius, at that.
It is so good to see you back and hopefully well rested! I love the history and the pictures you share. I am sure knowing the story behind the earthenware you have at your tables makes your meals together very special. I love how you said, "...perfume of history."
We are loving Kentucky and our new/old house. It was built in 1903 and has some history to the house and the previous owners. Blaine and I will do some research at the library to find out the details. I do love the fact that the Amish and Mennonites are here and I will be sure to purchase their products. They have a few stores selling not only furnitures and quilts but produce as well. I will try and take some pictures to share with you.
Love to you and Janine!
xoxo Cat
This is really beautiful! Worth an exhibit in a museum for sure.
Michael,
I am sorry. The YMCA is the Young Men's Christian Association. There is also a YWCA for women. They were started probably 100 years ago. Their purpose was to provide wholesome and healthful activities. Today the YMCA is open to men and women and children. It offers a variety of activities. The one I went to is in a nearby town. One is being built in my town, but will not be finished for 1 1/2 or 2 years. The one I went to has an indoor swimming pool, a therapy pool, an exercise room, a day care center for small children, a game room for teenagers and offers various classes and activities. I went as a guest. For not too much money you can join and use all of the facilities. I am trying to decide if I want to join. Since it is several miles away, I am not sure I will be willing to drive that far, espeically in the winter, to use the facilities. Do you have some similar organization in France?
Carol
RYC: I don't know if you'll see this comment among the rest of these, but I just wanted to tell you I left out that we have French blood in us too! lol If I'm not mistaken the French side of the family, the last name was LaCombe? I'm not sure if I spelled that right.
Vos photos me plaient beaucoup.
I have 2 plates of the colonial times with pictures similar to yours, but in americal colonial period dress. I love the old as well, but these are probably not made as well as they were in the 15th century...I would not dare eat on them...just hang them on the wall for all to see.
ryc: Very unusual to have women as deacons in the Baptist churches of the Southern United States, but I was one of the first. Many still turn up their noses and call me "heathen", but God only asks that we be available for His service and that is what I was ordained to do...Serve. So once a year the "men" and I get together for a Christmas dinner, a fancy social, but we pick up the tab so that the church does not have to pull from their budget. Therefore, it was dubbed a few years ago, "the Deacon Bash". I was trying to get my hubby to go, but he doesn't like fancy events, but he wanted a picture and a peck on the cheek, til I returned. (I did bring him a bit of dessert though).
So glad you are back. From the looks of it, you did not lose any readers. Hope your eyes do not get too tired again.
Prayers for you and Janine, Candy White
welcome back, my friend! i absolutely love the pictures... especially the teapots... i collect them -- i suppose that's why i love the teapot pictures!! god bless!
Michel,
I have four children, 9, 12, 16, and 20. The two middle ones, boys, play in our small town band. One the saxophone, one the baritone. The youngest is a girl who saw her first ballet this weekend after flying to Dallas to the arts ceter. I love your pictures, they are so vivid and full of realness! My husband is in Iraq currently, but we look forward to having him home in late January. Beau Bandit is our new puppy, there are pictures on my site from about 3 days ago to see him. He certainly wishes to be French, and would prefer French cuisine to what he is served! hugs!
Shanna
Very glad you are back! Such beautiful architecture.. Much history.. Lovely teapot and earthenware, too..
Warms me to see you back.....
Vibrant colors on those pieces.
Oh you are back..how wonderful..your photos and more on Brittany....I am invited perhaps next year..to my friends abode in Cleder. Hello! Glad to see you are back - and thank you for stopping by!
I think the teapot is my favorite of the grouping. It just looks happy! Also, it has a lot of blue, my favorite color.
Oh Michel it is so very good to see you posting again with all of your lovely photographs! You always take me places I have never seen and may never be able to see in my life time. Thank you so very much my friend. In response to your question I have 3 children. Yes Melissa is my first baby and she is 30 years old then there is Leah who will be 14 years old next week and last but not the least my baby Scotty who is 11 years old. I have been a very blessed woman. I hope you have a very blessed day.
Love,
Debbie
I use paper plates.
Maybe when I get married, I'll have China.

Michel,
My small daughter, Madison, wishes to ask a favor of you or your wife, she would like a cookie recipe so that we may share cookies as would be at your table for the Christmas holiday, and we will bake them here and pretend that we have a grand tea with you! Is this possible? We would share one as well if you wish!
hugs hugs hugs,
shanna
wow..! lovely sight. i really think the art on the bowl is beautiful.
hope you are well. how are your eyes, by the way?
~aliah
Welcome back, Michel!!! I missed the fact you have been back for days!!!
Chele gave me a teapot when she was sixteen and working so she used her own money. It is a lovely one and in a place of importance in my china cupboard. The bottom has these marks...A crown and beneath Sadler...made in Stafordshire England and has a hallmark in gold. I have one more Sadler given me by a dear friend in London who died of breast cancer last year. So they both are dear to me!! Your collection is awesome!!!
Thank you for the compliment Michel.....my faith is so important to me....though I am yet a babe in understanding God's ways...my husband is a tremendous man after God's own heart. The recipe can be whatever is traditionally French, she just wishes to share your world.....hugs hugs hugs Shanna
what a lovely town you visited...like going back in time...that teapot is absolutely gorgeous...I am glad you enjoyed your stay here...many huggs...Sassy
Lovely photos. I have a very small piece of Quimper ware. My mother loved it and had several pieces. I love your photo collage. very nice.
I was reminded by seeing your name on my comments that you may not have seen the final installments of the trip we planned for Terry. It is up but back several blogs. There is a total of 5 chapters.
Regards and Merry Christmas to you and yours,
Becca
thanks for the well wishes. i'm feeling much better. as for you pictures, i like the 4 in 1 picture. really cool! have a good day.
becky
I am glad you are back!
What a beautiful composition you made! Lovely items, too! I collect teacups and saucers! Teapots are my mom's favorite thing to collect. We look out for each other when shopping at estate sales, antique stores, etc - because the older ones are so much more beautiful to have! May you and Janine have a blessed Christmas this year!
~ Aimee ~
I don't know if it is in the soil, the air or just a fact, but I view you and your countrymen as having exquisite good taste. I still put my food in good dishes, tho I am alone.
I love the culture you bring to your blog. Great pics!

I have just learned here about this earthen ware..thank you for teaching us so much* ((Wings))

What a beautiful town! I could spend hours there just walking and looking. How are you guys doing? Is it warm there? How are your flowers? Sure hope all is well!
welcome back!
a friend of mine collects teapots. she would love the one you have. the picture of the cathederal is great. its amazing how well buildings built centuries ago can last.
yes, i just finished my term paper and focused on marxism existentialism & nihilism and have become very interested in existentialism.

I am thinking of you today and wishing I could be there when your choir sings!! Did you know I was able to take communion in Notre Dame...what a feeling of awe! My heart beat so fast I was worried.
Love that crockery.
HeHeHeHeHe.
Fort alamo.. It is just the alamo... forgivable though.
Nice composition.

Ah! You're back! I'm sure my comment will be lost amongst all the others [you are so popular!].. but I do love the photos.. I think I've learned some tricks from yours, although I rarely post my own work. I hope the eyes are treating you well!
I received your beautiful Christmas card today, Michel!
Thanks so much, and I'm glad mine arrived safely to you.
I love the beautiful faience of France. I enjoyed visiting Salins-les-Bains when living at Besançon, and our daily dishes are French white that I purchased there as seconds (deuxième qualité). I love them, and they give me a sense that I still have a bit of France with each meal! I have not visited Brittany YET. I hope, someday, to enjoy it in person. Welcome back, friend; you were missed very much!
Hi, Michael.
It has been a very long time since I have heard from you, and I wondered about you, and how you are doing. It is such a lovely surprise to hear from you, and I am so glad to know that you are still with us. Thanks so much for stopping in, and comlimenting my artwork, which I do enjoy so much....eversince I was a little girl. It is good to know that other people can enjoy it too. (smile) After Christmas...I am going to see where my paintings will take me...truly... for the first time in my life. I have done things, and sold them on my own...but now...I am curious to see how much my things are worth. I have heard it all my life...."You should sell your stuff! You would be rich by now! (Which I have never cared to be)" Anyway...That is what everyone around me thinks. Now, I am just curious to know what the professionals would think. But thank you so much.
Have a great day, Michael, and may God Bless.
Love & Peace at this Blessed time of year.
~Kim~
Bonjour! I recently discovered your Xanga site and have subscribed to you. I've really enjoyed reading a number of your previous entries. I have a profound respect and admiration for French culture and history. I live in the United States but my family originally came from Alsace. Thank you for providing such high quality content to the Xanga community and for presenting French civilization in such a fine manner.
-Scott
i'm glad you are back up, and thanks for the comment.
I love your pictures you've posted, looks like something out of a story book! purfume of history? how interesting! I like the metaphore!
Oui, Michel!!
idk if its the same in france, but in the us people get tattoos of chines charectors alot. i was excited to find out they had one of gypsy!
<3ashera
what a wonderful introduction to the subtleties of the french history and art. lovely. thanks.
What beautiful things! I love that first picture Janine took of the town. It's so perfect it doesn't look real!
its so good to have u back..missed hearing from u

Lovely place, lovely pottery! What nice momentos of a pleasant trip. I like that the castle is pictured in the plate.
I am sitting here and the fireplace is aglow. I think of how fortunate I am! I spend much of my time here reading blogs such as yours and feeling blessed.
Hello! I just updated MrsKaren's site with pictures. We spent the day over at their new place in the country and thought you might like to see the pictures. They have a lot of work ahead of them but they are so very happy. The area they moved to is just beautiful and full of little hills here and there...just lovely!
I hope you are resting and taking it easy. My love to Janine!
xoxo Cat
