  • Une bonne voisine de jardin

    A great garden neighbour

We have the chance to have great vegetable garden neighbours and especially Huguette that my wife and me know for long . Here are some events that I keep in memory ..

It was in may 2000 , I sowed carrots . I was very busy and applied my mind to dress the soil to make it able to receive those tiny seeds of carrot . Three rows already have been sown when Huguette , my neighbour , told me kindly :

    • " Would you want to drink a beer with my husband and me , Monsieur Fauquet ? "
    • " You know I don' t drink anything in the afternoon but to please you , why not , " I said .

A few later she came back with beer and 3 glasses with stem . We drank in talking to each other through the enclosure . It was bottles containing a third of liter . But the beer had a strenght of alcohol of 12° !! Produced in Lausanne it was called " Evil ' s beer " . And it was the Lent !!!

Afterwar I had my brain in the mist and the legs weak . However I continued to sow the 3 last rows of carrots . But I wondered why they were so winding ……

Le paquet de graines         The packet of seeds .

I sowed in Mai 2001 ( 1 month and half too late because of the unceassant rains in Picardie at this time ) 2 rows of leeks ' Bleus de Solaise " for soup and 2 rows of leeks " Jaunes du Poitou " for leek tarts called here " flamiches " and for delicious fondues . A few time later I saw that the " Bleus de Solaise " only have germinated . Nothing for the " Jaunes du Poitou " . No more flamiche , no more fondue ! There were no more seeds in shops . Too late . My garden neighbour arrived and I told her my disappointment . As soon as she rushed to her shed and came back giving to me a rest of a pack of seeds . I could sow 270 seeds of these leeks and I had the heart inflated by my neighbour ' s spontaneous generosity .

    Les délicieuses courgettes spaghettis
    The delicious courgettes - spaghettis
                        ( zucchinis - spaghettis or spaghetti-squashes)

This year 2003 , several times Huguette gave us some courgettes - spaghettis with the recipe for cooking . These are rather small and yellow courgettes rather short but thick . You cut them in two parts , you take off the seeds and you fill the cavity with grated cheese , bits of bacon , fresh cream and grated cheese again . You put in the oven during about half an hour . It was a delight ! When you eat the flesh of the courgette , it becomes a sort of thin strips like spaghettis . Marvellous ! We didn' t know this sort of courgette . Then , Janine saw at the supermarket the same . They are not cheap at all . Our neighbour gave us great gifts .

.....Obviously we do the best to offer to her from time to time salads to plant , cherries , grapes but …….

Finally simple generosity and solidarity always exist , at least in the vegetable gardens but also else .

  • LOL I wonder if some of that Evil beer had been sowed in with the carrots if the carrots would have been tipsy when you pullled them up

Sounds like you have very nice neighbors... generosity can be found when you least expect to find it

I can't wait to see your Evil Tipsy Carrots

  • The courgettes-spaghettis sound delicious!

How lucky you are to have such wonderful neighbours!

    Mike

  • I have never seen the Evil beer before when I have been in France . You are very lucky to have such great neighbours Michel . Its a pity that we do not have markets like you do with all the fresh veg just picked that morning

  • ...it's good to read your post today, Michel. You lift up our heavy hearts.
...Devil's Beer, indeed, had you planting with a happy dance.   Good neighbors are a blessing, thanks for sharing yours.
...think your "courgette" may be a spaggetti squash here. I'll try your recipe - reads delish!!! Is the bacon uncooked when used in the recipe? Hugs, MuSe

  • Zucchini spagehitti!!! Mmmm, I don't actually care for zucchini alone, but that in spaghetti - deliciouso!

I love your posts Michel, they do tend to be of the same Great Mind as mine do when we post on the same day!

  • Gardening is a great friendly activity isn't it ? I'm not a gardener - I left that to Frank ! but he was always chatting to our neighbour - over the garden fence. Here people have allotments, small areas for growing away from their houses ( esp. if they haven't got a garden or only a small yard ) these are very popular and there are waiting lists to get one. These seem to be real  "bonding" places for lang time gardeners and beginners. Marie PS I got 60+ tomatoes from my plants yesterday - am I proud ?????

  • Your neighbor's generosity is so touching. Your stories gives me comfort that there are nice neighbors out there... (they are just not next to me, ha ha ha!!!!) By the way, the way you described the speghettis makes me so hungry!!!

  • A friendly neighbor is truly a blessing.  I am lucky like you, we have 3 neighbors that we share with.  Fresh eggs from one, cookies from another, and many laughs from the third.  indie

  • Huguette looks like fun, and sounds like fun!

I don't think I could have had that beer and tried to sow very straight either Michel.

  • i liked this story a lot. strong beer makes for an enjoyable day in the garden!

  • I thank the friends who indicate to me the name used in USA about " spaghetti squash " = courgette spaghetti in Great Britain .

  • It sounds like you have wonderful neighbours - it is indeed a great gift. And yes, I am a very happy girl. :) I have been much blessed as well.

  • Maybe it exists on Xanga as well?  I hope so.  I would like to try some of that beer!  Cheers, Neil

  • Such a nice neighbour you have. These little stores all made me smile. The spaghetti squash sounds very delicious. I have to see if I can find them here so I can cook that meal.

  • It would be great if more of life where like this... or at least consistently

  • my mouth was watering, as I read your recipe for the spaghetti squash. When I was younger, my mother prepared the squash so that it was stringy like noodles, and served just like it was...with tomato sauce and cheese. your way of preparing it sounds intriguing. I think I'm going to give it a try!

  • Great stories.  I like the sound of the spaghetti courgette!  Delicious.

  • One of my biggest joys in gardening is to be able to share, whether it is produce, flowers or cuttings. I so love to walk around and see something flowering and remember the person who gave it to me.  Alcohol in the middle of the afternoon in the sun is a very soporific combination for me... but, sometimes it is nice to take time out with friends in those spontaneous moments. It can turn an ordinary day into one to be remembered

  • You gave a kind neighbour ,fancy a Frenchman getting so weak on wine. I thought they were given it instead of Mothers Milk. I can just see you doing that planting. Thanks for telling me about Barb's site I had not thought to go there. Cheers Marj

  • Evil Beer interesting name and know we know why its evil =]...Memories last forever

    -monster

  • I wouldn't mind a neighbour like Huguette. No, not at all.

P.S. I do enjoy reading you.

  •  I will have to try growing leeks next year!  Good neighbours are a blessing!

  • I am not a gardener but I often dined on the fruits of our neighbor's garden.  He gave us tomatoes, carrots, and other vegetables that he had grown.  Also, berries for the children and, when he went fishing, flounder for the whole family.  He taught me how to clean the fish and many nights we had delicious fish dinners for free.  Since this neighbor died a couple of years ago, I have missed this bounty.  Thanks for reminding me-those who share what they have produced themselves should be blessed!

  • glad that you are gardening! sounds like something that is part of who you are. I am just delighted to read your entries, and find it hard to say too much afterwards, but thank you.

  • So much love is given in sharing our different plants, beers, smiles, cultures, habits...it just takes a simple yes sometimes as you did to find a new world of wonders.  We should all say yes against our habits to find new horizons.  Thank you for reminding me that change is good

  • So heartwarming! Aren't nice people and generous neighbours and friends great? As always, I'm so impressed by your dedication and hard work to your gardening!

  • Evil beer and gardening.  A fun way to spend an afternoon!

  • Your post of your friendship with your marvalous neighbor warms my heart. I can imagine you trying to plant the carrots straight after Devilish Bier and I smile. Must have been very interesting arrangement of plants after you finished. My friend Carlo has taught me so many things about the courgettes and the different varieties. We have eaten them in many different recipes that he's made for me. I love the tiny ones that flower in bright yellow on their ends.

Now, I have a petite garden on my balcony. It's a bit too late for the tomato to make a fruit, but it is flowering. I wonder if my late sunflower will appear. My poor watermellons didn't make it, but my rosemary and thyme are still thriving next to the geraniums.  The cold weather approaches, and I'll try to bring everyone inside to enjoy the sunlight coming through my large windows.

  • hee hee!  Sounds like gardening has been interesting...  and it sounds like you have nice neighbors.  The words you use at the end of this blog are beautiful.  I agree with the person who said your blog lift spirits.  I know your blogs lift my spirits!

  • what a party girl! fun spirit! thanks for sharing that lovely memory...

  • i love your stories Michel!

  • That's fantastic that you have such great neighbors! I've lived in my neighborhood for fifteen years and the people there are much the same; we all know eachother as we grew up together.

  • You have a wonderful neighbor. Such friends are a teasure!

Courgettes-spaghettis sound like what we call spaghetti squash. It is very good.

  • Sounds like you have really fun neighbors! And strong beer! I don't think our beer in the states is that strong, but I don't drink beer that much. Great picture.

So how did the carrots turn out!

  • I sometimes have a bottle of Chimay beer and know how strong it can be!   Occasionally it is nice, but not in the afternoon.

the courgettes sound marvellous and I have never thought of cooking such a wonderful recipe.

thanks for your comments on my Xanga once more.  Tom

  • spaghetti squash, for me all squash is disgusting...

  • Isn't great to have such nice and friendly neighbors? I do not know what I would do without mine. There isn't anything I would not do for them they are so special. Take care my friend and have a great week.

  • Did I say that Huegette is absolutely beautiful in your picture?  Her spirit, personality and charm comes through so very clearly.  What a wonderful photo you captured.  I wish she was my neighbor

  • that makes me happy.

  • What a lovely neighbour!  But you do the same for her with the cherries and grapes and so forth, so I bet it balances out   Isn't it nice having neighbours you get along with like that?

  • Sounds VERY interesting Michel Sounds like you and I would get on very well over a bottle of wine . I don't drink beer

  • I know vegetable spaghetti, but they are big yellow things where the flesh turns into spaghettini when cooked.  The recipe sounds delicious

  • LOL!  I can't imagine what it would look like if I were to plant vegetables after drinking a cocktail!  You have very nice neighbors.

  • re your comment on my site.  These people are extremely wealthy, have their placed fenced off, live too far for any visitors without cars and there would be no one on their property at 3 a.m. by accident!  I think they went too far with the dogs myself, but then I had the intruder and I'm not so sure I'm not going to get a dog myself.

  • My wife loves to plant and garden ... perhaps I could drink the beer and just watch her work. What do you think? ;) Yeah, I didn't think she'd buy it either.

You have a good life, my friend!

    DG

  • Gardening is an incredible thing! I did not inherit my mom's green thumb(HAHA) but my dad is wonderous, and so is my boyfriend. Gardening is a gateway to generosity and friendship. It seems sharing and helping is a strong theme when gardening.

Thank you for the wonderful descriptions! And thank you for the encouragement to stay home.

    sarah

  • I want a vegtable garden!

  • What more is there to say?  You are indeed fortunate to have good neighbors who share the same interest in gardening that you have.  There is nothing like the fresh fruits and vegetables that are grown at home.

    Your friend,

    Carol

  • When you share the vegetables from your garden, you have truly sewn the seeds of friendship! God bless!

  • Devil's Beer, eh? I wonder how this will influence those innocent carrots of yours.

You must tell us how the French celebrate our version of Samhain/Halloween/All Hallow's Eve. You know us Americans, we must have several names for one thing! LOL.

  • I wish I could grow a garden..wonderful entry...reminds me of the writing my grandfather always did when he was still with us.  Thank you for bringing those memories back for me!

  • How kind of you to share with them a beer.

    Lovely story, Michel.

  •  Vous rendre visite est toujours un plaisir.

  • Wow! The beer you drank really is strong. But it is good to read that you have such a friendly neighbor. I like that

  • My comment must be disappeared.

I said how nice ids to have such neighbours. It is more important to have good neighbours than friends.

Zucchini is my most loved vegetable,we have a lot of different qualities, even the flower is a gourmet food.

In Italy they are asking more then 6/7 euro a kilo for Courgettes.

    Amitié

    Carlo

  • You do indeed have a wonderfully generous neighbour! How lovely of her to share seeds, recipes, and a fine drink or two with you! It must be a pleasure!! The recipe sounds delicious!! And you too must also be appreciated for your own generosity!

And thank you also for subbing to my site: I do appreciate it! Enjoy your Thursday, Michel!

  • Are all French people as kind as you, or are you the kindest?

  • Hehe! The winding row of carrots made me laugh. I'm glad you have such a kind neighbor.

  • You have very nice neighbors.

I'm a little out of practice!) des fleurs pour les colibris. One set didn't grow at all. The other two sets germinated and the plants grew furiously, but the flowers never bloomed.

    Have a nice day!

Bien a toi Michel!

  • j'ai faim maintenant.

  • Michel, after avoir lit ce "blog", je suis tellement faim!

  • greetings and salute Michel - good to see the garden brings all sorts of goodness to those who tend it - i have recently moved house and have inherited a beautiful salad patch and some chickens who provide eggs with psychedelic yellow egg yolks - htankyou for sharing the simple pleasures

  • wow it seems that u really have fun in gardening, that's awesome! and u have a really great neighbour!

  • Great stories, Michel hic.

  • Another great story Michel.  Random acts of kindness are the best.

    mj

  • Thank you Michel for another comment on my Xanga.  This is much appreciated.  Only two weeks until I go to Brittany!  Tom

  • Aww, how wonderful! Your gardening neighbor seems like a very kind person, and gardening in itself is always enjoyable. I would love to try some French wine someday, but here in America I am not yet of age

    <3,
    ~Savannah~

  • My apologies to deejer . I have accidentally deleted her kind comment that was just above . I have unfortunatly clicked at the side of her name to reply . Sorry Deej . What a toughtlessness !        Michel

  • Sorry for replying so late...Thanx so much for your encouraging comment!! =) I surely am working hard every day now... I dare not proscratinate anymore! =P

You've got a really nice neighbour... I wanna try the kind of spaghetti you mentioned so much! =) I'm a pasta fanatic, hehehe... although I'm a Chinese, I must say my favourite cuisine is Italian and French!

And I read your previous post and realize you're such a great illustrator! You draw really well~~!! Your trip was so funny too...I like the 'chop the head' part! =P hehehehe...

  • I haven't tried spaghetti squash yet, but I intend too next year. Your neighbor sounds like a very good person to have next door who offers seeds and evil beer to make your rows crooked. Very good post! I enjoyed reading.

  • Good Neighbors are so hard to find.  Enjoy them Michel.

I love your picture too.  Your blogs always remind of of the dyas when I used to plant a garden in PA.  Can't plant anything here in Florida... too sandy.  But I'll come here and read about your garden and pretend it's mine too.

Happy Weekend to you and the Mrs.  (((((hugs))))

  • Hi again Michel!

I'm glad you enjoyed the jokes on my site! Yes, I do spreak a little French (un petit peu), but it's been too long, I have forgotten much of it!

    Enjoy your weekend!!

  • Merci beaucoup pour vos compliments, monsieur!

    -monster

  • Gardening is good for the soul...and sharing this wonderful pasttime with your neighbors and us  brings pleasure to our souls. Now if only I could get a hold of  some of this wonderful 'Biere du Demon' it would make my weeding a pleasure too! Merci!

  • Was the picture taken before the beer or after? hehe. 12 percent.. its lucky you were not face down in the garden. Better be careful. .. I cant stop giggling at the thought.

  • Michel, I just wanted to thank you VERY much, for your wonderful birthday wishes to me!! .

  • Bonjour, Michel,

  • Oh Michel...I will surely take up gardening whenever I have a house(someday). Oh Evil beer, sounds good...and sowing carrots, a friendly neighbour, courgette spaghetti...am feeling hungry and thirsty now.

Oh yeah Michel, must tell u this interesting thing - I am in love with french (French girls to be more precise=). My best friend over the last one year in Vienna was french, now she has left for Ireland(sniff) and now I have three french girls as friends...They are so sweet and so much fun.I'll be in France one day(soon).

  • Yes Michel - SMS text is a disaster for the language - or is a new language being created?  I hope not.  French and English are both very elegant languages, capable of great depths of expression.   I hope we do not lose that.   Have a good week, and thanks for visiting my Xanga!  Tom

Mon anglais laisse a desirer.

    Merci ^^

    Nana

  • *lol* what a fun story of your crooked carrots! those yellow courgettes you refer to, in america we call them spaghetti squashes! they are very good! i haven't had one for about 15 years though!!! I don't know what they call them in england...

  • Aw, what fine folk.

  • What a wonderful neighbor!!  The Evil Beer made me laugh!!  I had a Margarita like that a few weeks ago...only I wasn't sowing carrots!!

We had a hard time this year with our garden.  Our dog Levi ate most of our tomatoes-he thinks we grow them for him!!  My basil didn't do well and our corn also died out.  Our weather is very strange.

I have never tried spaghetti squash but it sounds delicious the way that you describe!!

    Cheers,

    Lisa

  • Evil's Beer sounds very much like the beer produced by the Trappist Monks in The Netherlands. (It is probably the same strength, anyway.) I like that beer very much - it is almost like a wine in strength...and very warming. However, as you probably know, their beer is a closely-guarded secret.
