  • An old letter in a vallet 1944- 2000

An old letter in a wallet .

An old letter in a wallet .

On September 6 we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the landing of the allies on the Normandy's beaches . We visited them two years ago with my cousin René and his wife Chantal but I have personal memories of that year 1944 and especially from September.

Michel , 11 year old

after the battery went away ( photo take by his father ) September 1944

In 1944 an intrepid 11 years old french boy welcomed with enthusiasm the Canadian army freeing the north - west coast of France where he lived .

A battery of  guns located no far from his family home  was shooting  on the Cap Gris Nez , fortress where the Germans resisted . He wanted to participate , to have a comrade soldier

and to live like a little soldier among the guns . He succeeded and he was proud to have a big  protective comrade .

Then the Canadiens left for Holland . He was sad . A correspondence has been after the war until 1948 . But his last letter had not answer .

The canadien soldier had kept this last letter in his wallet ( cf above the facsimile of this old lettter published by the newspaper Toroto Star on Saturday december 29,2001.)

Douglas welcomes Michel at the Toronto airport in the last week of December 2001. what an emotion!

At the spring ... 2000 he asked his children to try to find the " young " French . They did and found him .

A regular correspondence via the Internet during 1 1/2 year with the soldier ' s eldest daughter allowed to find again the friendship links in the new context ,

     56 years later .

At the end of December 2001 the kid of 1944 crossed the Atlantic Ocean in order to be there at the canadian soldier ' s 60th wedding anniversary at the eve of New Year . It was a huge surprise for him orchestrated by his daughters .

The two comrades " in arms " found again each other through in an inexpressible emotion .

The young boy of 1944 , it was me , Michel  and the Canadian soldier was named Douglas Bible  coming from Toronto

  • Hello Michel hope all is well for you and family. This has to be the most special memory to have and forever to hold. When I read the beginning of this blog I knew it was you and I must say Michel..you have such beautiful and neat handwriting. Its amazing that the Canadian soldier still keeps your letter and it still looked in mint condition. I am so glad you got to reunite and meet him again. I followed the D-Day remembrance yesterday and as always I still find it eerie but in a peaceful way when I see the graves of all that have fallen facing the sea and i can imagine how difficult and scary it must be for these great heroes who put their lives on the line to make the world a safer and better place for their family, children and grandchildren

  • That is a wonderful story! There was a new TV show on about D-day and several veterans participated. It's great to hear the stories that they have to tell.
This address should work, Michel: https://whyzat.wordpress.com

These trees are still in bloom and do not bear fruit.

  • Ty so very much for your comments on my post and photos of red velvet roses

  • Ty so very much Michel of your comment on my photo of the peony bug. It is the stages of becoming a bud and then will bloom.

  • This is a wonderful story that could be made into a play! I also thought how you learned English and how it made your visit even more joyful.
I cried at the programs on the D-Day invasion. It just breaks my heart to see these young men falling in battle.
    Thanks for sharing, Michel.

  • Michel, I have not been on Xanga in a long while but I am so glad I came over tonight and read your blog. This is such a remarkable story. I wanted to thank you for sharing with us. I hope you and all your family are doing well. We are very warm in North Carolina now. The crepes are beginning to bloom. I have no garden this year. I hope you have a very successful harvest with yours!

  • What a tremendous story of love and friendship! I have grown to understand and appreciate more about France, and about the landing of the allies on the Normandy’s beaches through your stories over the past few years. Before I'd read about this in history books, but you make it all so alive for me.
I'm never surprised by your generosity, kindness, and love. I'm so blessed to have you as my friend, Michel. Thank you for sharing this beautiful story.
    Love,
    Carolyn
RYC: I love to share with you my family and faith, even as you do with me, Michel.
I always have a picture of me (with my husband) when I post a comment, but I will post a new one in my blog soon.
You are definitely not a complainer! But I am always wanting the best for you & your health. Love and prayers… Carolyn :-)

  • Wow, this is a history lesson in itself! One that is really real to me. In 1944 I was just six years old, even so I remember those war years as if it was yesterday. Always interested in how others fared during those tumultuous years. Thanks foot sharing Michel.
