Les vieux livres .
The old books
English version after the French texts .
We own some old books coming from my parents and before . I have read passionately those books when I was 12 / 16 years old .
They are books of science , adventures and religion . I love to see them in the bookcase and from time to time like today I enjoy to read them again in the quietness of the lounge .
I always am as much passionate . They moulded my being for a part . They relate the history and the way of thinking at a time .
Published from 1869 to 1909 for most of them they are themselves witnesses of the History . And more , they are beautiful .
Aujourd'hui j ' ai relu quelques vieux livres .
Today I read again some of those old books . On the picture I have in hands " A grand mother' s Bible " by the Comtesse de Ségur 1869
photo Michel Fauquet 30 janvier 2007
This book published in 1909 has been written by a visionary who described in advance the naval battle of Midway ( 1942 !!!! ) and already showed
the importance of the radiocomunications and of the planes . Indeed in this case , the airman , a French , made a flight from Midway to SanFrancisco via Hawai
to warn the Americans .
This is also a book to celebrate the french - american friendship.
I pictured this etching at the page 81 of the book " Michel Strogoff " written by Jules Verne and published by Hetzel in 1876 .
JuleVerne was a visionary too . In this book he counts the travel of a czar ' s messenger from Moscow to Irkoutsk in Siberia , full of dangers , adventures ,
dramas and love .
Jules Verne lived in Amiens , my town , during the second half of his life .
All of the books at this time were beautifully illustrated by etchings in black and white .

WOW....what a treasure you have!
great writing carries us away - in time and place. I have some of my father's boyhood books as well, an incredible treasure.
I have a treasure of old books in my attic. Don't you just love the artwork in the books!
Yes, I am painting and doing childrens things.
My aunt owns a bookstore that sells antique books. "The Ageless Bookstore". As I wander through that place, I imagine the treasures that lie between the pages. I'm afraid if it were my place of business, I would spend so much time reading that I would not sell anything. Jules Verne is my very favorite author. His imagination stimulated mine, especially when I was the age that you mention, 12 - 16.
You are a very lucky man to be able to have this books in your house, and to be able to keep them, and to read them again when you feel like doing it.
They are like friends, sometimes you need to talk to them and to listen to them.
Bine à toi,
Carlo
Michel: I think most of us - just like most of you who lived through occupation and bombings - have been lucky. We are, most of the time, ok. But maybe we are a little less sure of the world than others, and certainly, at times we are afraid and not sure why. Some, sure, are still too angry. And some are so bitter they know nothing else. And some are dead because their only response was to fight. But mostly, we just hope our children never have to learn these lessons.
Books were indeed very beautiful back then. The covers were often works of art by themselves.
i love the look and feel of antique books - especially the tactile covers and the yellowed pages-g
I am the very same! I love old books. They full of treasure, and yesteryear.
I have started a nice collection of antique books. I have been collecting them for about 10 years. I am very selective about what I add to my collection. Only those things which speak to me in some way are added. I cherish thinking of how many hands have touched the pages, absorbed the words and been moved....much like I am now. I think some of us live in the wrong times....then I remember that I am not in charge and that God is and that He does know best.
Enjoy your books. I am just now unpacking a few of my treasures and loving every page of it.
Much love,
Karen
Wow! I like old children's books. And also reading them after many years as an adult then all the happy memories come back!
Knowing how to enjoy the finer n' often simple things in life is what I call 'living!'
A good book in hand~then we immerse ourselves in an adventure~wherever the story takes us!
I've alwayz loved topics like mystery, psychology and historical travel!
I have some books that belonged to my Grandma I feel that way about. Judi
Those old books look so neat. I've been thinking about dreaming a lot lately. That's one thing I think is so neat about you Michel. You haven't lost the ability to find wonder in everything. I wish more people could find wonder in the simple things.
<3,
Aubrey
I love my job at our beautiful public library because it has two things I love: books and people! The cover of L'Aviateur du Pacifique is wonderful!
Have a blessed day!

Tuesday - my favourite Xanga day ..... because you blog !!!!!! My grandfather instilled in me a love for old books as he used to take me to secondhand shops to rifle through the books there. Is you weather warm again, our is but cold " promised "
Marie
and if we do not tell these stories they will be forgotten. And when people forget, they allow the disasters to be visited on other children.
I like old books. I am reading some old books that belong to my father.
One is a book by Pierre van Paassen. It is a good book, but no pictures!!
i do love books with pictures.
Have you looked at those books by Rien Poortvliet?
You have some very nice books!!
I hope you are well, Michel, best wishes to you and Janine
xoxo Cat
I have to giggle. I put what was translated into French back into English using the translation program and boy did it come back rather strange! Sarah and I have gotten quite the laugh out of the translation versus what I actually wrote. :O) Maybe I should try just writing in English?!
You are right...books do make us dream! I love the books you have shared with us and not just because of their age, I do love the older books, but what I especially love is the fact that they have been passed down to you by your family members. To me...these are true treasures to have!
How is Marina? I do hope that she is getting stronger and stronger everyday!
Our winter here has been rather mild. The warm weather we have been getting has made me anxious to get out and start planting again! Blaine has marked out a much larger area for our garden this year and I am ready to start turning over the earth and get started!
My love to you and your family!
xoxoxoxoxo Cat
Lovely photo of you reading the books! These are treasures, Michel. They're steeped in history and seeing your parents owned them make them even more special. Just the smell and touch of the books would be an inspiration. You are so right about these magnificent and detailed illustrations!
Thanks for sharing!
books make us dream. true indeed, thats why i like reading a lot!
and lovely pictures once again!
have a nice day!
ann
I like your picture, has blue in it and my favorite pass time "Books" Very interesting. I love old books they hold such history.
Shirley
I am such a fan of books. I would probably spend my last dollar on a book.
Those books are almost as old as you are........
sorry.......
And btw......... ur french is getting very good.....................
I read every night. My favorite writer is Marcel Proust. I'm up to 'The Guermantes Way' from 'Remembrance of Things Past.'
They make us dream indeed!
You look good in that picture, younger than the one at the side of your site Keep thise books clean and tidy pass them down, one day they will probhably be valuable, i watch a lot of those shows that show antiques ,as the subject interests me. I posted your book off today ,so about 10 days time you should get it ,the selection of mine is not one of my better ones .I don't write much now ,am getting lazy. although i have sent some more stuff in to Forward ,they are slow to give their prizes out this year ,and put a new page on .I e.mailed them asked if they were still in business ,got an e.mail back yes ,and they would be putting new frontpage on in February ,and to still keep sending .I don't think they are doing so much business as formerly though, slow to senf books when I order .Love Marjie
how lovely to have such treasures in your possession.... and books are some of the best friends i have!!
Yes, they do, don't they?
They also have beautiful covers and illustrations. I came across quite a few of these illustrations when I was editing a book on World War I in Europe. Really admired them.
I have lots of antique books as well, most over one hundred years old. I have a sixteen volume set of Balzac dated 1899 printed in Philadelphia. They have wonderful etchings in them and I love them but they are dust collectors for certain.
Mom is doing as well as can be expected. How is your daughter in law? Hope they have some answers for her condition.
Love, Brenda
Oh, it's so wonderful! I think the oldest book I own is from (maybe) 1980. How sad for me!
My "bad day" was the result of an editor rejecting my latest manuscript for publication, despite wonderful reviews!
I am much better today, however.
You feel the same as I do about books, that they are treasures in so many ways. Thank you for showing us some of the books close up. I like the deco lettering on the first & of course, old etchings & illustrations enchant me. That pink/violet one on the sofa next to you is pretty too.
Tresors. Tresors particulierement du famille.
J'adore les vieux livres! Ils sont tellement beaux.
♥
Books are the treasure of our past, the record of our present and the direction of our future. They are one of the greatest yet simpliest pleasures. I wish everyone could appreciate them like you evidentially do. Blessings, kc
Those are wonderful books! I think that the books we read when we are young strike us in a way that is impossible to duplicate at later age. One of my favorite books from my childhood was a beautifully illustrated volume of fairytales. I will have to see if I can photograph it some day.
Yes, books do take us away to different places and times.
The books you have show a wonderful collection - we also have a few "old" books - a cookbook that was my maternal great-grandmother's, a copy of Mickiewicz's Pan Tadeusz that my maternal grandmother read in school, a family bible from my maternal grandfather, and a couple of books from my dad's side.
I've also been able to find a couple older books myself - one was published in the early 1920's that is a songbook of Welsh songs (found that at an estate sale), a military sermon book (found it in an antique book shop in Savannah, GA that was published in the 1940's), and a couple of others that had been donations to the library I had volunteered at that were slotted to go on the sale cart (as the library was unable to use/preserve them).
Yes *smiling* these fall into a part of my book collecting "weirdness" - but what I like about books that have been either handed down or ones I know a little history behind are all the more special as it gives a little insight into the people who owned those books and who came before.
Yvonne
That is so fascinating. I have purchased old books from sales, when I can find them. I have my grandmother's school books, it is very interesting to read a history book....from 1908.
I hope you have a great week, my friend.
A good book is a treasure. Isn't it wonderful how you can be in a new world just by reading? I love to travel that way, there are no limits to where you can go and what you can do when you are in the world of a good book.
What a interesting collection of books you have Michel. I had not heard about the book from 1909 that talked about the future naval battles, its strange to think 30 years later the writer was right. Here in the UK we have a TV show called Antique Road Show were people take things to show the experts I am sure they would love your books
What wonderful books - they don't write them like that anymore.
Wow. He predicted WWII before WWI!
First class writing Michel---very interesting.-- Books can do so much as I found out on my first vist to Paris. Having eaten a meal at a restaurant adjacent to the Moulin Rouge, I could not understand the waiter. I said 'I have not my livre' [book] with me--- meaning my French dictionary He thought I was saying 'I have no money' [livres --British pounds] OOh La La --luckly, a street girl came to my rescue ---she in her profession just had to be billingual. I learned it takes all sorts in this world of ours
I also love old books and have many of them. They are a treasure.
What a lovely picture of you in a comfortable setting with some good books. I love old books but have to avoid many because of their musty smell with triggers my asthma:)
Oh they are lovely!
And what wonderful tales!! I adore the
old books - the stories, the feel of the book itself and
OH! don't forget the scent! I LOVE the way our old
books smell!!! I am quite a collector also - my really
excellent books were inherited from my Beloved Mother-in-Law!
Happy Reading, Friend!
Quels beaux livres! I love it when people write about the books they love. It is a subject near and dear to my heart. The written word is a powerful one, and seeing words in physical print is like the feeling of a young child on Christmas morning.
I would love to read more books. I fall asleep. I have my Grandfather's Bible but would rather have Grandma's.
Your couch is beautiful. Leather I bet.
Bonjour, Michel!
Thank you for your kind words about my site. I was showing your site to my husband this morning and I realized you would have lived through the second world war. I have known many Americans who fought in that war, but never a Frenchman who lived through it as a child. I wish you could come visit and talk to us of your experiences!
My son and I are studying that time period in our homeschool history lessons.
Have a great day!
i am sure you have passed on your love of books to your children too. i love to read and i love books. new books, old books, i love them. and my kids appreciate them too. reading is a gift that is meant to be passed on. as you have done here.
Many happy hours can be spent looking at books, for example, last sunday, in my boredom
, I went to Barnes and Noble, a bookstore, armed with a notebook and pen, to write down chicken recipes...needless to say, I did not buy any books, but have about 30 recipes! I absolutely love the naval battle drawing...I would love to have a poster of it!
You seem to have a wonderful collection, as you sit cozily on a cold winter's day, with a cup of tea...I'll be right over to join you! Hint: I like peppermint! Luv, Lowie
I love old books, they certainly are a treasure.
Those books are beautiful. They certainly do not make books like that anymore. I have a couple old ones. One called "Hajji Baba", that was (and still is) in the bottom drawer of my parents' small bookcase made by my grandfather(which I now have). When I was small, even before I could read, I loved to page through the book and look at the beautiful, and very foreign, pictures. I was so excited when I was finally old enough to read the story. Come to think of it, I must do that again soon--cannot really remember it anymore!
I did not realize that Jules Verne lived in Amiens. He truly was a wonderful storyteller, and had a pretty good grasp of the future, too.
Dear Michael,
All books are treasures, and old books are especially dear to those who love to read. How fortunate for you to have such a fine collection from your family. The books you described sounded very interesting.
In the first photograph I noticed a spinning wheel. Does your wife spin? My daughter Beth has a spinning wheel and enjoys spinning wool to knit. Recently she got some Alpaca wool which is extremely soft. It is also a beautiful natural carmel color. I do not know what she plans to knit with it.
As ever, Carol Suzanne
I have some books I enjoy reading over and over again too. Today I went to the book store to buy a couple of books.
Note to my comment: The copy we have of Pan Tadeusz? Mom mentioned that it was actually my great-grandmother's, maybe even her mother's, but we are definitely sure of it being hers with her notes in some of the margins.
I am very fond of black and white illustrations as you can see by my header!!! I also love all the old books and have some that might be valuable...I don't know for I won't sell them. I had one book written by a very young Winston Churchill that was a novel with a setting in our Old West. It was hilarious to me. I gave it to our priest who is from York in the UK. I remember a book I read as a teenager that made such an impression on me because it was about an American girl who married a wealthy man from France and now I don't remember the author..the title was Came a Cavalier. That was the first time I became aquainted with the family life in France. I was quite fascinated. I will look up the autheor and get back to you about that.
Michel, thank you for sharing this with us. I love your pictures.
Michel, the autheor was Frances Parkinson Keyes! I thought it was, but wasn't sure. Have you heard of it?
Ryc I was amazed by the wood carvings. Juid
Jules Verne visited San Diego and left a footnote in history for some of his astute imaginings. One blogger has four different translations by google:
http://www.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.xanga.com%2Fapreci8_1337hax0r&langpair=en%7Cfr&hl=en&ie=UTF8
and it even translated my words into french. Wow I didn't know the internet could translate so fast some of the words that people write.
Unfortunately my blogging is interfering with my reading and it is not easy to do both.
I love to read old books....if they don't smell musty!!!!
Hello Dear Michael!!
Michel;
I share your passion for reading and for great literature. The written word has been called "frozen thought", in that it preserves for ever the exact words and thoughts of the author for posterity....a "time machine" that takes you back to the era as you read. A book exercises the brain in ways a television or movie can not.
Thank you for sharing your library with us.
Michel, in answer to your question on our money. The Queen's head is only on some of our coins, not bills. She used to be on our notes but not now for some reason. I should send you some of our coins so you can see!

Bonjour!
Thank you for your kind words for Sarah. She has handled the whole thing with such grace. Although the month of January has been a tough one - we all have relied on God through it all. Sarah had to make some very tough decisions in regard to Muffin and not ones we would wish upon her but we all agree it is all part of the learning lessons we receive here in life. All of those lessons help us move forward and hopefully to help others in the future with what we have learned. Joseph in the book of Genesis comes to mind right now. He went through so many trials and tribulations in his young life but all of it was to prepare him for taking care of a nation. I think all of these things give us hope and courage to face whatever is going on in our lives, to learn to be content in all things, learn what we need to learn and hopefully move forward. :O)
We are supposed to have snow today. We have had little flurries here and there but nothing that really stayed around. I do hope we have some snow for us to play in...I love to watch it snow.
Marina will be in my prayers today as in my thoughts. Please let her know we are praying for her here. And, Blaine says, "Hello!" to you and our best to you all!
xoxoxo Cat
Merci Michel! J'ai BESOIN de TOUT de LA CHANCE!!!!
Amities,
Clementine
Those books sound really nice! They will be great to pass on to your grandchildren and for them to pass to their grandchildren
i am staying with xanga! i just wanted to have a more private site.
xanga.com/shewasaghost
i subscribed to you from there.
thank you for your love and support!
This is absolutely the most fascinating of posts! How lucky you are to have had parents and grandparents who loved and cherished books. I'm also a bookophile and used to crawl up into the attic of a rented house and browse through old books. I also learned early to develop a love for them. The old books in the attic were not nearly as much of a treasure trove as what you have there. I do believe that books can help mold a person. The words and wisdom of the author reach well into the being and essence of the reader.
We should be introduced to that book that celebrates French / American friendship. We do owe a lot to your beautiful country and sometimes some Americans fail to read history and understand this relationship.
I also like that big leather sofa!
votre amie
Francoise
RYC You're so funny! Yes, you are like Nate and sleeping in a broom would be better than what some people endure. (BIG SMILE!)
Books are such friends to us. They teach us our past and our roots
Love to you both
Nancy
Michael,
I live in New Albany, Indiana. It is not a large city, so it might not be on your map. It is directly across the Ohio River from Louisville, Kentucky (named for a French king). Louisville is a large city, so it should be on your map.
As ever, Carol Suzanne
Hi Michel
Yes, my father was born in old Yugoslavia, in a town near the Austrian border called Maribor (it was called Marburg then). The story that my grandmother tells is that at the end of WWII my grandfather was put in prison by the Partisans (communists) apparently because they wanted his apartment. My grandmother and her two kids were hiding in the hills near the Austrian border. My grandmother says that after 2 or 3 months my grandfather was due to be released from prison but there was a jail break by some of the other prisoners and as punishment the Partisans picked out 10 prisoners and shot them. My grandfather was one of them. My grandmother worked for a while in Austria but she was not allowed to stay there and she didn't want to go back to Yugoslavia so she applied to emigrate. They were supposed to go to Chile but after political turmoil broke out immigration there was stopped. So they had to choose between applying for Australia or Canada, and because my grandfather had once said that he would like to go to Australia my grandmother chose that destination. They changed the spelling of their surname because they thought it was too German, but my Grandmother and uncle have since changed it back. So that's how my father ended up in Australia. My mother's ancestory is British and Welsh, but they have been in Australia for about 6 generations.
They gym pictures are really silly we were playing. Judi
We share this love of books. I have some books that I have read in the past and they mean a great deal to me. I don't take the time to read like I used to, but I enjoy seeing the books on the shelves - waiting for me like old friends. Makes me feel content. I enjoy these little pieces of you, Michel. - Rachel

I wonder how we'll be able to keep our books, when computers have taken over? But future generations will have to get their magic from wherever they can.
I am surprised at how bright and colorful your books' covers were. Just looking at them gives such pleasure, doesn't it!
We lived in an older house that we bought from my father, so it had all kinds of treasures in the attic, much as yours has. It was hard to move away from there, and I gave most of the books to the library. Nothing can be held forever, but I still enjoy remembering them!
Thank you for reminding me of the books that were magic when we were 12-16, and so they still are today!
Joy
RYC: Quilling is a paper art. You take thin strips of paper and wind them into a circle. You then bend the circle into different shapes. Like making petal to make a flower. I put a picture on the top of my post for you.
I have a few old books here with me, but the good ones I have passed on to our kids.
My daughter has my childhood copy of RLS A Child's Garden of Verses - - - which I read through every time we visit there in Oregon.
She also has my Dad's copy of The Rubiyat of Omar Khyam (sp ?)
But, I have enough treasures to keep me happy.
Gym pictures are up. Judi
oh how glorious! old books!
i love old books and just books in general! i love to read! always have and always will!! so pleased you do too!
have a fabulous weekend, michel!
angela btw, that was a funny comment by benevolentMitch....he said your french has gotten very good! hahahah
he obviously doesn't know that that's your natural tongue! hahha
i like Jules Verne. i read his book, "Around the World in 80 Days" when i was in highschool. and i totally enjoyed it.
So many books to read. So little time. But to spend time grieving the fact is to waste that time. Better just to read and enjoy life, as you do. I have great admiration for you.
Michel, Evi was the one who was from Belgium. She married here in America and has the two boys, Noah, my godson, and Jakob. Ella is the Amish woman that I go to visit. She has a little girl, Kristina.
We have received more snow and the temperatures are very cold. I have to go out soon to the store and the bank. I am hoping my car starts! I hope you have a great weekend! - In friendship, Rachel
Hello, sweetie Michel! Thank you for your comments, I am feeling better...after reading the frightening side effects of sinus medication, I am resorting to the ancient Neti Pot...which is a middle eastern remedy for washing the sinuses with warm, salt water...kinda looks like a teapot
! It's working...today I am going shopping and to lunch with a friend...so I am not as bored as I was stuck in the house last weekend! How is Janine's father, louis? Your daughter in law? I am thinking of you as you read your books and drink tea!...Love, Lowie
there are few things as lovely as books -- and the older books are loveliest!
ryc, hahaha ok that benevolentMitch...funny guy!
oh yes, i love to cook, michel!!! i think it's because when i was sick and couldn't eat for 10.5 months (i had to eat liquids through a peg in my stomach!), so now that i can eat, i am loving cooking!!!!
william, my hubby, is enjoying all my cooking but he is worried he's getting chubby for him! he is very lucky and doesn't gain weight easily but because he hasn't been exercising religiously, he has a bit of fat around his waist! hahah
very unusual for him! you have your own vegetable garden? i hope to have one when we have a house someday! i crave some fondue because i haven't had it much...only like 2 times maybe in my life! what is your favorite dish? does janine read your blogs, too? i think it's wonderful that you are so clever and do this!! i always enjoy your blogs!!! you have a wonderful weekend and i need to sleep!
angela

Thanks for the encouraging words Michel, Judi
Thank you for the link, Michel. I really appreciate it! I am reading a book by my hero, Antoine de Saint-Expéry. It is titled, "Wind, Sand and Stars" I read it a long time ago for I wanted to be a pilot when I was young!!!! Have you read it? If you have, tell me what you thought about it!
I am not blogging for awhile for I fell my blogs have been too self-centered. I want to be happy when I return!! I love reading your blogs and others!
I only have a couple of really old books and you are correct, they really are treasures.
RYC: I LOVE your French accent.
i grew up with old books, too
my father is a great collector...i'm sure there are almost 10000 in his house now
so many books...so little time
thanks for sharing this wonderful post

Hi Michel,
Yes, you are correct. My name is Christy.
Hope everything is going well today. It's cold here. In the 20's F.
Have a good week.
Christy
Michel
RYC Yes, I am worried, too, about global warming. I can remember 35 years back when the winters were colder, more snow, and lasted longer.
Our climate is changing quickly!
Christy
J'adore lire des livres bien.
The "Relay For Life" is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. I was part of the committee last year, and am helping again this year. The event will be in July, so it's taking a lot of preparation.
Bon nuit, Michel!
RYC: Thanks for the comments. -I love a good book. -haven't been in reading book mood lately.

Lovely pictures!
I think you are right, I have been three years and have exhausted myself, posting once a week seems like a good idea.
I am so pleased you like the songs, there is a newer video on yesterdays post, I just love Westlife
ryc, John Lennon was born in 1940, not me. I was quoting from his book 'In His Own Write.'
Bonjour Michel.
I'm sorry I missed your post. I've been spending so much time writing. Ah, that does make for a book doesn't it?
Je te souhaite une excellente journée!
RGC- Cajun is, yes, from the French! New Orleans, LA, USA!
It is a special seasoning recipe I mix.
Red pepper, black & white peppers, Cayenne pepper!
Salt, garlic, onion, basil and oregano - all added
per my recipe and then packaged to sell! A little
in your beans makes them spicy - MUCH in your beans
gives them FIRE!!!
J'aime l'odeur des vieux libres heh
I was a huge dreamer and book reader as a child. Not so much anymore but I still like to read. I love books and think to be able to read well is probably the most important of all learning, along with comprehension. You can travel the world in a book and never leave your sofa. Not as exotic as a trip but not nearly as expensive either. Graphics I love and they are a help for viewing the unknown but a well written book doesn't need a thing but the words on the pages.
Yes! I think books are so important in a child's developmental years. It's too bad that many teenagers now do not read much. They prefer the film or television. I hope Sammie will grow to love books/reading!
Michel,
Maintenant je lis rarement . ca me manque...
Bisous a toi et aux tiens
Mimi
There is no countryside in Singapore, so I jog around my neighbourhood. There is actually a designated jogging path!
We would love to read your posts about your life during the second world war! Please send me a link. Thank you so much! Have a wonderful day.
Je me manque francais.
-Sara
