  •                                    Se lever tôt .

                                      To get up early .

English version below the picture .

I am not a morning person . It always has been hard for me to get up early in the morning .

It ‘s why I bought in 1962 a big repeating alarm clock that rings 7 times .with a very loud sound .It is pictured above .
With this special alarm clock put on the carpet to 1, 5 meter from my bed , the process to get up is the following :

    - At the first ring ( ringing ? ) , some of my brain cells are twinkling but not enough to make my entire brain awake .

    - at the second ring , this time my brain awakes but it can only note that my body is completely flat on the mattress and unable to move .

    - at the third ring , my brain realizing my body still is completely asleep decides that  a small wait is possible yet !

    - at the fourth ring , my brain is struggling with my body and send to it the order to move . But the body don’ t obey .

    - at the fifth ring . At last , my body is moving . I sit on the edge of the bed only and look at the clock with a dark eye .

    - at the sixth ring I “ rush “ towards the clock to stop the ring but too late . When I reach the clock the 6th ring is   ended .

    - I notice that I am got up but I am frustrated and  furious . I remain crouching near the clock to wait the 7th ring . And when this last starts
I push furiously the button and the clock all of a sudden becomes  dumb . “   I caught you  , darn clock ! “ I say  triumphantly  .

But the result was I was got up !

You understand easily my wife tired to hear those six screaming ringings quickly has  chosen to get up the first !!!
And I have to confess that , except in some particular  circumstances , this special alarm clock has not been much used .

I have been tagged by Shirley (Coalminersdaughter11 ) to relate 6 weird things about me . I believe you will find them above !!!

And I tag all the friends who desire to be tagged .

  • I'm right there with you on not being able to get up easily. My alarm clock is also very annoying and several feet about from my bed!

  • You are too funny!!!  There are many mornings that I don't even HEAR the alarm.  I think you are doing better than me.  LOL

Take care and have a great week!

    Karen

  • I hate getting up early. Mothers and wives get up so easily because they have to. I'm neither so I just sleep in! hehe

  • I have to say that I am a morning person so thats another weird thing about me

How wonderful that you have still got the clock after all those years

I am having french fries for my dinner tonight and there will be no salt on those I do like a shake of salt if I have fish and chips at the seaside

  • Isn't it odd how we are with the alarm clock. In our house I hear my alarm but I can sleep right through my husbands and never hear it ring at all. He, however always hears mine, so that means he has it twice as bad.

I'm not surprised you still have that alarm clock, back then things were made quality and meant to last. Not cheap plastic like now.

  •   LOVE the clock but love the story more.  I know how old that clock is...since I was born in 1962.

  • I can relate to your story!  It is so hard for me to get up in the morning.  I am always up at 5:30 in the morning.  I am often very tired!

    <3,

    Aubrey

  • How very clever of you to get your tagging over like that   My alarm clock is quiet really and I only use it when I have to be up early eg. for church etc .It has a snooze alarm too - it rings again after 6 minutes if not turned off. I have just realised that i have an unused alarm clock in here- the guest room whick is very similar to yours, probably the same age too. Marie

  • Oh! Waking up is becoming a pain for me and it's only the second day of school. I think I need to borrow your alarm clock!

  • J'aime tes histoires Michel!

  • I have my alarm clock right above my head on the bookcase head board. I do something interesting. I drag myself into the livingroom. Unlock the front door, turn on the porch light, and then go lay down on the couch until Miles comes in the morning.

  • I'm like you, Michel! I really don't like geting up early, and find it very difficult getting out of bed. But strangely enough once up and dressed, I love being out early in the morning. But I have to have a very good reason to get out of bed that early. The alarm clock isn't welcome in the early hours of the morning at my house!

  • Meant to say I love your old clock!

  • I love mornings, early mornings are my favorite time of day.  That looks like the clocks we have here called "Big Ben"  never liked them because they tick-tick-tick.  Mom had one and I'd put a pillow over it so I could sleep...tick-tick-tick.  They have a very loud ring for an alarm but that...tick-tick-tick.....no thanks.  Very cold here with winds blowing brrrrrrrrrr, we went from 70 degree's to below 30....brrrrrrr.  Had some snow flurries this morning, want be long until snow covers the ground.  I can wait.  Shirley

  • hahaha!!Tu me fais marrer!!! J'adore me lever de bonne heure!!! je deteste les reveils,ca tombe bien vu qu'en general je me reveille avant qu'il ne sonne!!

Il caille ici!!! ca me plait bien aussi....

  • Tu me fais rire, Michel!

  • I do not like getting up reeeeally early... especially if I went to bed late the night before. I must have 8 hours of sleep or I might not be nice to people during the day

I really liked reading this today Michel. These are 6 unusual things... how you wake up in the morning. That is a very nice clock, and old treasure from the 60's Ah yes, life was simple back then. haha...

Be well, Michel. (((hugs))) to you and Janine.

    ~Rosemary

  • I get up early only if there is something I must do, otherwise, I sleep and sleep and sleep...and zzzzzzzz snore

  • I never tag people and I never answetr any that tag me i find my time on here too limited to worry about what is weird about me or good or bad ,i guess all those who read me know what a grumpy old woman i can be, and at times write weirdly, but I genuinely like to hear from you all and when i answer ,you often all get longish answers..AT the moment I am trying to write  2  uplifting poems, well this is not usually my style but they are bringing out a book of hope and encouragement, they say not all will be asked ,but I expect that is a bit of flannel .I doubt I will be able to think along those lines, this heat we are getting is tiring as one gets fed up sitting in air conditioning all day, they say it will cool and rain tomorrow I do hope so. Unlike you my friend I cannot sleep in late I awke every morning between 4 and 5.30 and get up and make a cup of tea I go back to bed but not to sleep sometimes during the day I will nod off for a very short time whilst looking at T.V. I put my light out each night at 9.30-10,00 so we are not alike in that way thank you for your constant remaks to my meanderings on here I only wish i could sit here longer I always mean to come back but seldom do once I get off.  Get out of bed you sleepyhead Love Marjie to my one French friend

  • hehehehe i loved it!!!! i am so pleased that you hate getting up early too! i have always hated it! it's 147 am now and yes, hubby and i are still very badly jetlagged. sigh. you crack me up! i always love seeing your blogs!!! ange

  • I really enjoyed reading your post. It had me laughing in stitches!

  • that story is hilarious~!  I can soooooo relate.  I have an alarm clock with a snooze button.  it gets HIT many times in the morning~!

  • I could use one of those wonderful alarm clocks. My mother assures me that I have been a sleepy head since I was an infant, so I don't fight it. But it is not a good thing when one needs to make appointments and get things done.

  • Mon dieu.

  • I need one of those clocks that starts ringing and jumps off the table and runs and hides, or I just can't get out of bed. Thanks for the laughs.

  • Hmmm , let's see.....

RYC Would I eat steak or fries first?? Fries, definitely!!

Hope your week is going well. Again, I can't tell you how much I enjoyed seeing the great picture of your lovely family.  What a good looking family you have!!

    Take care!

Christy   And, thanks for stopping by!!!

  • you do look like you have sleepy eyes.....i guess you are a night bird!

  • LOL...so funny Michel!!!  I did not know you had that great a sense of humor!

God bless you and Janine always(((HUGS)))

  • I found this to be very amusing, especially since I'm not a morning person, either.

  • very funny, very normal I would say, I AM the family alarm clock because I am an early riser, I go around waking my family, at the 4th call and fed up hearing me say "breakfast is on the table" they decide to link body and brain and shift from the bed. I do not own an alarm clock.

    RITA.

  • I am retired so I don't need to get up unless I chose to.  Result ---getting up is no problem as I am in command.

  • What would happen if you didn't have that alarm clock?  Would you sleep all day?  I feel that once you are retired, you can get up anytime you want.

Poor Janine.  As for me, I really like getting up early but then....I go to bed early.  I'm not a Night Owl.

That's fun entry but I don't think you're weird at all.

  • aaaaaaah Michel, you are soooo funny!

hehehe.......i tried to get the picture of the Lily up the tree sitting in a treehouse eating kangaroo burgers.....but mon dieu!  Do you know how hard it is to find a tree house around here now days........winks!

Blessings to you and yours sir!

  • i almost always wake up before the alarm clock begins its awful racket.  If I am asleep when it goes off, it causes my body to violently react.  My brain must think that it is some kind of emergency for I bolt awake. My impulse is to stop the noise as quickly as possible.  I do not talk to the clock, but I give it evil looks for so frightening me.  Like you, I am then up, but I feel cheated that I was not able to wake up naturally.

    As ever, Carol Suzanne

  • Great story, clever way to get your wife up to start the coffee. I'm afraid if it were I the clock would not be set. It is a nice clock to look at.

ryc: We live in the middle of Texas. It is rare to have ice storms here. We were raised on the East coast and husband still remembers how to drive in such...slowly. People here try to go too fast and then start to slide and don't know how to steer to correct it.

    Love      Michel

seeeeeeee?  You started me off!  I just added some........winks.

  • Oh, I really don't hear it!!  Many mornings I don't wake until I hear my husband getting out of bed for work.  Then I wake immediately and I am fine.  I get up, make breakfast and lunch for Joseph and then get the girls going on their school work while I make them brunch.  Once I am up I am fine.  It is just the hearing of the clock.  Maybe I need to borrow your for a while.  LOL

    Have a great day.

    Love,

    Karen

  • *LOL* But, it's such a HANDSOME clock!!!
I personally rely on the sun .... and the dog -
    to wake me up!!!

  • LOL  Poor Michel .... you sounds like my brother, he is nearly impossible to get out of bed!

  • Hahahahah!!!
Well, I had a lovely alarm clock before I got married. I stopped using it because it was too loud for my husband. I jump right out of bed at the very first ring of any alarm (unless I'm dog tired). But that also means I usually leave my brains on the bed. There was once, my brains finally woke up and realised I was already on the train platform waiting for the train! I had to check and make sure I was wearing the right clothes for work! Haha... I must have been very tired.

  • I am a moening person. I hate waking up with my alarms everymorming. I thank God for that..if not, I will be spending a lot of mony on alarm clocks and getting late to class

  • Hello, I see your name on a lot of the sites I post on, so I thought I would pop over and say hello. I hope you dont mind. I used to like to get up early, but the last few years I sleep in as much as I can and let the day start with out me! Take care and I enjoyed reading your post.

  • I too cannot wake in the morning

  • I always get up easy in the Spring and Summer but never in Autumn and Winter time.

  • I love getting up early in the morning now, though when I was younger I liked staying up late then I could sleep until noon. I loved to stay up late, while others slept. Then in my twenties, I started getting up real early and I enjoyed it for the same reason. I had a lot of nice quiet time to myself, while others slept. I still love sitting here reading, or whatever while the rest of the town is asleep. I get up somewhere between 4am to 5:30am. I think I have a built-in alarm clock that will not let me sleep past this time, no matter how late I may stay up.

I will think of you and that alarm clock, while I am sitting here in the am stillness and get a chuckle out of this blog. You have such a good sense of humor. Glad you did not decide to throw the clock, as it appears to be a nice one.

    Love Edie Rose

  • I wake up when the cat gets on the headboard above my head and just stares at me. Even when asleep, I can feel that staring. I don't know how he does that. My children gave me a magnet that says "There is no snooze button on a Cat who wants breakfast!"
Your clock doesn't know how tired you are, after spending the nights piloting a ferry!
If you really must get up early, I will be glad to send you a cat or two to help you!
    Joy

  • You are so funny. I am the same in the morning. I don't get up so easily either. My hair is all over place and I can hardly open my eyes, it is funny. I am more of a night person.

  • I am not a morning person at all.  K bought me a wonderful alarm clock.  It has a light and aromatherapy attachments.  It first begins to gradually get lighter.  As it does I can smell what ever scent I want.  Eventually I can hear birds chirping and I almost believe they are outside my window.  Eventually the alarm will come on and we can push a button to sleep more if we would like.  It's so much nicer to wake up to.

  • Before I reached the last couple paragraphs, I was wondering why on earth you had to wake to an alarm clock if you are retired!  Then I understood.  It is like here when I have an early appointment.  My problem is that my alarm is not very loud, and I wear earplugs to bed.  Am always worried about waking up, so usually wake up several times during the night to check the time on the clock.  When it gets within an hour of the time I have to get up, I usually just get up early.  I also leave a note for Ken on the kitchen counter to wake me up at whatever time I need to be up---in case I don't hear the alarm.  He always gets up before I do.

I am ALWAYS alert when an alarm wakens me.  Don't know why, but suppose it is because I know I HAVE to get up at that time.

  • Great looking clock....efficient too. I like the strategic placement of the clock too...it requires you to walk across the room to shut it off...no chance you could just hit the snooze button or shut it off before you're awake.

  • That is so funny Michel. Judi

  • RYQ:  I used to sing but quit.  John still sings bass in the choir.  His "work" is volunteer...He builds ramps for the handicapped  and he helps out doing work in the church on Thursdays.  He is retired after 41 years of teaching school.  We've both been retired since 1996.  Since then we have been very busy...traveling and doing volunteer work.

  • Tres Bon

I hate to wake up, and I hate to go to sleep early. It's really changed for me, here in Belgium. Usually, I'd stay up all night and sleep all day. Carlo is a morning person and we only get two wake up thingys from the cell phone. Actually, it plays nice music.

  • i usually set four of five alarms on my phone and then the alarm on my ipod and still i dont get up on time unless I really want to... some days I wake up much too early but on the days that are important I am almost always late!

  • Hi Michel, just thought to let you know that I have cancelled my Multiply account. Thought it's a waste of time keeping so many blogs.

  • I loved your comment, because, yes, the antiquity of those rocks, binding us to the earth's ancient history, and played upon by the tides that are as old as the first rains to fall on the still-cooling planet. Perhaps we should meet in Connemara or the Hebrides and raise a glass to eternal dreams.

I'm reminded of the end of Norman Maclean's brilliant novella A River Runs Through It: "Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs.
    "I am haunted by waters."

  • I love the mornings - peaceful

  • Thank you for your visit. I am so glad to get my pc back up ! And see sometimes husbands are useful !! Come back anytime

  • I love your sentence - - at the fifth ring . At last , my body is moving . I sit on the edge of the bed only and look at the clock with a dark eye . I will laugh about that all day! Have a wonderful week!

  • Your wife must love you very much indeed. She did never try to make your alarm clock break down "Sorry, just fell whlie I was cleaning up"
    Do you still have it?
I use now my cell phone. First ring at 6;30 second one at 7;00. My best alarm clock is the smell of coffee.

  • Janine is right, Michel. Better to have a rooster in the garden than an alarm clock in the bedroom.
But you are already retired, aren't you? So, what the matter to have an alarm clock...??
    Ciao.

  • Nice! I loved the detail on each of the rings. I too hate being woken up.

  • RYC.. Thank you!

    Everything is good here.

    Have a good week!

    Christy

  • Hey, that's cheating, there should be more weird things about you!  *wink*  I can only find ditigal clocks, and I don't like them very much, I want one like that, but have been searching for quite some time.  It's such an intrusion to be woken up this way, luckily, I don't have to be at work until 9:30am, sometimes 10...so, I am the last one in, last one out!  I like my morning routine of sipping tea and watching the Today show, and reading the paper...it helps me ease into the day better!  I also am guilty of going to bed too late, as I like to read!    Love, Lowie

  • Glad you enjoyed the horses. Yup the keyword in relationships is transformation. Judi

  • I am an early morning person. My alarm is music at around fifteen of five and I listen and wait for the news headlines. Five fifteen I shower and dress then have to take the Corgis out for a walk, and even on weekends we are up around six, walk and have to have one cup of coffee and check the internet for weather and news. Your story was fun to read and as always you bring a smile. Thank you for that Michel.

    Love, Brenda

  • One of my joys of retirement is being able to shut off the alarm and sleep to my contentment.

Guess I'll have to do that meme,    if and when I can sort out some of my weirdnesses.

  • Thanks for the answers - I'll have to check the site later today - thank you.

  • My husband takes loud noise or beeping to get him up. I usually get up before him and set the alarm on a very low radio setting, because the slightest noise will wake me when it's time to get up. In college, I found that I slept through my alarm about once per semester. This never happened on a test day or when anything particularly important was going on in class. These were days I NEEDED to sleep in, apparently. Life is beautiful.

  • What an annoying clock-lol. I would want to throw it against the wall after the third ring!! Do you no longer use any type of alarm clock? Love to you.

    Ciao.

  • I hate the alarm clock, so I usually try to awaken before it rings.  Soon, if all goes well, I will not have to answer the alarm so often.  I plan to let my grandson (7) read the post in French.  He is in a French immersion class here in the US. This is a good way to let him practice.  Have a good day.

  • I am preparing for an animal photo shoot. I study others pictures to be able to get shots of my own. Should have a variety of pictures next Monday or Tuesday of my own. Judi

  • I love this post,very clever!!

    I hate shrill alarm clocks!!

  • My father was losing his hearing as he grew older, but he could feel vibrations very well. So I guess maybe a vibrating alarm might be a solution to wake you up without disturbing your wife?

One of the bad things about waking early is the cold. The body aches just thinking of how the chill will cause the body to shiver.Speaking of cold, there is a mystery in Fresno (150 miles north east of LA) where the Koi(a type of goldfish) mysteriously died. And they don't think it was because of the cold, but might have contributed to it though.(in my blog for saturday jan 20)

There are some telephones that have a vibrating alarm. Maybe you can arrange for a service to give you a wake up call? Otherwise I don't know of any other vibrating alarms...

  • i can't stand getting up early either...especially with a noisy clock!!
this week already 2x at 6:30 - i have forgotten what that time of day looks like ;)
that is a very ingenious clock...i didn't even know they made those things
looks like you need it at times - i would need it each day for work!!

  • Hello from the frigid lands of Minnesota

Haha, if this is weird my husband is also weird in the same kind of way!  It is a pretty alarm clock.  The design of it is called retro by now.  Maybe you can sell it for a large sum since it does not work well for you.  Regarding the comment you left about nerds, geeks and dorks: I am sure there are old ones... they have simply lived longer as nerds geeks or dorks, LOL!

  • ryc, yes, michel, you are right! zorba's brothers is a greek restaurant. steve, hubby's bro-in-law is such a lovely dentist! unfortunately the ones i had when i was growing up were NOT, so i am still very scared of dentists!!! we have been trying to sleep a lot but with jetlag, it is very difficult! plus my poor hubby is off to tokyo today so poor hubby did not sleep last night! only maybe 2 or 3 hours. poor william!!! hope you have been happy and well!!! angela

  • How delightful!  Your weird things were much wittier than mine.  :)

Yes, I do have an alarm clock, and it is, coincidently, featured in my Fauquet Friday!!

  • Salut Michel!

Hooray!

    L'amitié <3

  • If we honor our earth and love its beauty all of us together we will care for it. I did lose muscle but I feel good I am back at the gym gaining it everyday. Judi

  • sleep is something that I force myself most times to do. Ah, the life of a chronic insomniac! It does afford me the opportunity late at night, however, to visit my xanga friends to learn about what we have in common. I like to sleep late too! My daughter is similar, and after speaking with my mother this morning, I found out that if given the chance, I would sleep 12-14 hours at a time! Those days are long gone now. Hope you have a wonderful week...thank you for stopping by my blog today. Everyday I greet the "new me".

  • Yes, Michel, I am tired.  Life seems to be catching up with me or else it is the "winter blues". - Rachel

  • Knight is like you...morning is somewhat his enemy   Sending love

  • Waking up in the morning isn't nearly as enjoyable as waking up on your own later in the day.

Besides, other than the sun rise, nothing amazing happens in the morning.

  • le reveil-matin n'est pas mon ami! :o

  • must have been a beautiful psalm to sing, Michel. I know a lot of the old hymns had beautifully arranged music to go with them.. truly a wonderful way to praise God, but even without it is wonderful to sing praises to God.

I know how you feel about the Alarm Clocks. I am the same way. I bought an old fashioned alarm clock with the big bells too.. to wake me up in the morning.

    take care my friend,

  • Ha, according to my computer, and if I am very quick, it looks as though I get to be commenter one hundred!  Of course, I am not very quick; I type slowly, but I COULD have been!

I think I would have to damage either my husband or the clock if it rang that many times and I was asleep!  You are SO lucky that your wife gets up early enough!  : )

The clock my husband uses is one we got almost twenty years ago, free with a magazine subscription!  He uses it every work day, and it is as loud and annoying as ever.  Anything less, though, and he would be tempted to just go back to sleep.

I am good at waking myself up on time, and "approximately" doesn't matter since I do not have to punch a clock.

  • i'm back. haha.. it's also hard for me to wake up in the morning! ask my mum. poor thing. she needs to wake me up real hard all the time.

  • good morning Michel !  I bet you could guess that I am always up without a clock...the only clock that I ever use is when I am traveling and need to get to the airport early and then I use my cellphone alarm to get me up as well as a call from the hotel desk in case the cellphone did not work.

I loved your story and smiled as I imagined Janine excaping quickly so she wouldn't hear the clanging of the clock.  Have a good day -g

  • Thank you for your visit to my site. Aways such a pleasure to hear from you. I love reading all you post. You are a very enteresting person. Have a great weekend

  • Hi Michel,
First of all, thank you for the link about the speaking parrot.I feel very much like that parrot.
I am still learning to read and to write and I am in a cage.
About my rat story. You are right: Abel and Ahmed are living in one of the countries of the Maghreb could be anyone, perhaps Morocco, Next to the Atlas mountains, in a oasi village next to the desert. They are of the Berbers race. Ahmed is been in Europe, also in Paris and he is now back in his own country, Abel is young and he listen to the stories told by Ahmed and he dreams to go there too. The times are changed and the situation too.

    Amitié

  • I hate alarm clocks. So glad I don't have to set one to alarm anymore. I hope you are doing well.

  • ROFLOL!!!  Awesome!!! *HUGS*  What a wonderful clock.....depending on who you are, I suppose...*giggles*

  • Morning Glorie...Why do men do that - let the clock go off until your wife is fully awake and ready to strangle you?  My husband does that also...  I think it is because you were spoiled by your mothers - who got up early because your fathers would not get up to answer the ringing clocks....It's a miracle any of you ever got breakfast....Ah such is Life....ILYM
