Capitaine de ferry- boat .
Captain of a ferry-boat
English version below the picture
I was anxious on this day of 1966 as I have just been told I was the new captain of a ferry boat in Boulogne-sur -mer harbour ( Northern France ) .
and I knew absoltly nothing about this job .
Whatever my wife Janine and I were on the quay in the early morning .
Our 4 years old Carole already was installed and looked at us through a window of the boat in smiling
Iwent on the deck of that deserted ferry- boat .
I knew there was no oil in the tank that I had to fill. What oil to buy ? Where to buy it? How to put it in the tank?
Where was the hole for that ? How to pay the bill ? I walked towards the foredeck and saw a pump for boat no far .
- I shouted for the pump attendant : “ Do you have oil ? ”
- Yes , he said . What kind of oil do you want ?
At this moment a woman who lived in a house near the quay and hearing us from her window told me out loud :
" Take a good one so that your machines won' t block at the middle of the Channel of Dover ! "
- Give me Premier oil , I told the pump man . ( Premier is the best quality )
I was relieved to see him coming in hauling a huge and without end hose.
- “ My boat is not the first but the second “ I told him by fear he put the oil in the wrong boat !
I saw him crossing the boat from right to left pulling his hose .
The hole to fill the tank was located on the left outside the boat and the man had to bend forward dangerously over the handrail to put the oil .
The crew came progressively and I told them I didn’t remember the name of the company owner of the boat .
I needed to know to pay the oil bill to the pump man .
During this time , this last was looking intensively at something and he said :
- “You have a tyre completely torn! “
Tyre? Wheel? My boat had wheels !!!!!???? I started to faint .
The crew said it was useless to change it but I decided to do it ……. for the honour of the ………British Navy!!!!
At this moment the bell of the boat rang then progressively the sound became like the one of a spoon mixing coffee in a cup .
I opened an eye . Janine were there , sat on the edge of our bed, bringing me a cup of coffee early in the morning at eight and half on this day of November 2000.
I had dreamt. And I wrote immediately my dream which took place 34 years before ..
Finally the dreams multiply your life and make you live adventures and situations completely unexpected ,
sometimes happy , sometimes stressful butt always creative .

Je t'embrasse
Mimi
wow.....You really had me believing you were the new captain of that boat! I was amazed that it was only a dream! How vivid a dream it was!
Take care Michel and God bless you, Janine and your entire family!!!!(((HUGS)))
I love it how you share your adventures and a great drawing Michel...
Always so entertaining here.
What a vivid dream! I will come back and read it in French.
I think I'd have been glad to wake up if I found I was captaining a boat - I don't know my port from my starboard.
You are an artiste! Dreams are interesting to decipher
So much fun to hear your dream. I do not seem to dream as much as when I was younger, but my sleep is not as sound either. Your composition for this post was excellent....very enjoyable.
Hi Michel,
I hope all is well for you!
rr
ah--the things we dream sometimes give us hours and hours of daylight thought. The drawing is too perfect. Thank you for sharing, captain!
Mary Jane
What a great dream but were you dreaming about an actual event ? I, somehow thinks so ! It reminded me of some of the weird things Frank and I did when the family were young - things I wouldn't dream of doing now
Lovely drawing - you are very talented Michel
Marie
I always remember my dreams very vividly. I think they add so much to the spice of life! You really do have a talent for drawing. Your drawings add so much to your stories!
<3,
Aubrey
Oh my! What a dream.. Lovely art to describe it, too. Such talent, Michel! Happy Monday.
Ryc exactly they are Two forms of conversation with God. Judi
Oh what a stress filled dream
I remember many dreams that are frightening, but then to remember them it is funny.
Elizabeth and I tell our dreams to each other in the morning when we are still sleepy.
I have very bizarre dreams... sometimes ones where I am lost or walking around with not clothing on!!
I like this drawing very much.
Happy New Year Michel!
~Rosemary
Quel rêve!
J'aime beaucoup le petit dessin.
Bonne année!
Elizabeth
What an interesting story!!
Bonne Annee, mon amie!
Michel,
(I hope the translation is correct! I always wonder about that!)
xoxo Cat
Yes, I'm headed to Grenada in West Indies. I wish it were in Spain, then I could take a train to France.
Cool dream!
Wonderful drawing.
I love the drawing, reminds me a bit of cartoons from the 1960s. And it is great to relive the good stuff through dreams...
Its fun that you relive the dream ago. I have to say that since I am probably one of the few people reading this blog that has been along the quay at Boulogne I can picture the scene. The quay must of been a very busy place back in 1966 espeically around the terminal area. I always think that its a shame that port building that the train went into have been left to decay for so long
You know that dreams sometimes have a meaning. In your dream you wanted to put he best oil in your boat and that is a very wise thing to do. I would have said "Fill it with the cheapest oil and the boat will have stranded in the middle of nowhere.
It was just a dream but I thought you really was a captain of a ferry boat. I was wondering where the boat will go from Boulognr sur mer.
The drawing are superb.
Bien à toi
Carlo
You really had me going Michel. I thought that you really were a sea captain!!! I pictured that my friend, Michel Fauquet was a famous sea captain like Captain Ahab!
I and Carlo are quite the dreamers these days. It's nice to meet another with such fine dreams of grandeur. I agree with Carlo, that the drawing is superb. Also, perhaps in another dream, you were an artist?
Yes, Michel, our own two six-year-old children. It is Amy who says they hae no respect for her. Actually, I think they do, but somehow their relationship is in a phase where they do not SHOW the respect that they should. We will be working on it.
RYC: Okay, looks like I asked the right person about wines...thank you, Michel!! I'll let you pick from the wine cellar, and then we will enjoy a glass together, after our tea, of course!
Your dream is an adventure (love your drawing!), mine are much the same, combining past experiences with new ones sometimes, although I have forgotten them lately, which is probably good, because they were not so nice! I remember something last night about a dwarf, but alas, I can remember no more...smart of you to write them down right away!
Luv, Lowie
What a wonderful story/dream! "My boat has wheels?!" - I am still chuckling over that.
Ahh...Michel, I do enjoy your posts. We are back into the winter weather (a little more normal). I was getting used to this winter/spring-like weather. I hope your week goes well. - Rachel
Your blogs always make me reflect on life Michel!
In many wayz...life is but a dream!
Ciao.
Oh my goodness!! I thought you really were the captain of a boat! And I believe you really COULD be the captain of a boat! Thanks for sharing this lovely, lovely dream!!
And your drawing is quite wonderful, as well!
When I got your comment today, I realized that I haven't been receiving your posts in my subscriptions messages. Somehow your name got deleted from my list. I'm so upset; I've missed so many good posts. I'm going back to catch up. Already I've seen the wonderful pictures of your family. Happy New Year.
I have had dreams of the town i grew up in and I would be walking down a street and part of it wouldn't be in my dream. In the dream I would be so frightened and confused. I would wake up and be thankful it was just a dream.
Oh what a relief when you said it was a dream! I know you'd have done your very best to pilot that boat, but I'm glad you didn't have to!
I only remember two dreams--one when I'm trying to drive a big car with a lot of passengers. I'm driving it into the mountains--and I don't dare tell anyone that I don't know how to drive.
The other dream is when I go into an ordinary house, and find there is a wing of it that I didn't know was there, and it is filled with satins and gems and jewelry and all kinds of treasures. Naturally, I like that one best!
I'm really impressed that you wrote down your dream in 1966--and could still find it, after all these years! How did you do that? Someone in your house is very organized!
Looking forward to more adventures on your site!
That was quite a dream! How scary it would be to have a job you don't know how to do.
Haha you had me believing that was for real for a while. What an interesting dream! It seems so realistic too.
You have a wonderful talent for drawing too, Michel. It certainly brings your story to life!
I was like no this is not right because Michel is much smarter than this but there stood Jamie with her things so I said maybe. You got me
I love dreams, my stories come from dreams though this last one came from a picture I saw. My dreams never become the story I write so very different once I write them and I had no ideal what to write as I looked at that picture of the lake, I just started writting it is fun and relaxing and I enjoy it very much. I love your drawing wish I could draw but sadly I can't.
Shirley
What an adventurous dream! I wonder what it meant?
Good heavens, what a complicated dream! Isn't it amazing the detail and invention that our minds can manufacture?
Did you ever want to be a sea captain?
I love your drawings.
I especially loved your story where your hat blew off.
Thank you for sharing this with us. Very charming.
Very cool dream!
Good day to you sir... I think it is just as well you were never a real captain... but maybe it would have been fun.
A lovely story and picture.
Owen
A dream! Aha! I wondered where you were going with that story. Carry on, captain.
You have quite a way about you sir........your musings hold my attention every time.......although not the kind of posts that make your breath quicken at the sheer excitement and terror, they certainly do have a wonderful feel and tenderness from the author that shines through. You are a blessing to me!
Be blessed dear brother Michel.
love from
narelle
Vivid dream
what a lovely dream!! i wouldve liked captaining a ferry boat or whatever...
and yes... it is rugby that i play
Very creative! The drawing is really good. I bet you were relieved when you woke up and realized that you were only dreaming.
What a story ---and deliciously told with great humour-----Carry on captain Michel you are unsinkable. Ron
You dream such interesting dreams...And...to illustrate them too. Now we all share in the adventure of your dreams.
Dream on my friend.
votre amie,
Francoise.
Woohoo! Another drawing! Well done, Michel.
ryc: My own person could be well but I've these little compartments where I keep the feelings of the ones I love and most of the time, it leaks into the critical zone and shuts me down. The only solution is for me to reassure myself that they're okay...they're alright and everything is well.
We're all affected by those around us and if they're feeling sad...it becomes contagious and you can't help but feel sad too but then, one of us would have to counter it as soon as possible with positive feelings.
I could never casually say to another person that I have a bottle of happiness in my pocket because they would never understand. The only conclusion they would come up with is: This guy is a maddening wreck.
That is so far from the truth but such is life.
That was quite a detailed dream...I love dreams like that and remember them.
hehehe you are too fun, michel! i was thinking, wow! he was a captain too!!! you are such a superb storyteller! please keep us guessing again!!!!
angela
i also
your pictures! keep it up!
Oh, not to forget or anything...
Love the drawing...I hope there's always one to accompany each new entries.
What an unusual dream, but humorous also. For a moment I thought that we could look forward to tales of your boating adventures. The drawing is amusing too. The style reminds me a lot of Thurber's drawings.
Throughout your story I was worried right with you. Wondered why you would have a job you knew nothing about. I am just glad it turned out to be a dream! I have similar dreams----usually involving school and having to take a test on something I know nothing about---not even knowing how to find the classroom. I call them my "frustration" dreams. You want to do everything right, and people are expecting you to do so, but you have no idea how to do it.
Love the drawing accompanying it. Tells the story very well!
I still remember an incident while in elemetary school. The teacher asked me what I was going to do. I mentioned that I wanted to invent a machine that would think.
No I didn't invent anything that thinks, I went and learned computer programing in 1970 but basically didn't do anything further with it. However today I am blogging on the internet and not doing anything close to the ambition. Sounds familiar?
I do make my own bread by hand. Not all the time. Most days are store bought. We don't have bread bakery's like you do. We do have a bakery, but they concentrate mostly on doughnuts or cookies. If we want good bread, we have to make it ourselves. I like making it by hand. I like kneading the dough and shaping it. I especially like to make the bread bowls. Then I cut out the center to fill with soup. MMMMM! - Rachel
I love dreams, and hearing others dreams...and how much better to be able to see the dreams - wonderful sketch Michel.~!
ryc; not the US but in Canada where that photo is from. And the photo of your wife and your whole family is lovely
what a cool dream. so much inside of it and so much of you. thank you for sharing something so personal. i love that you woke up to Janine smiling and bringing you coffee. A perfect start to your day, that day.
I also like writing better than speaking. I'm clearer that way - I can erase in writing ... not in speaking.
Merci, mon ami pour votre comment. C'est drole!
(is that right? I mean "funny" or "humorous") In reality I'm not much of a football fan(American football) but do have a loose sort of loyalty to Ohio teams.
Francoise.
Such a vivid memory of a dream. I only remember pieces.
Bonjour....de Angleterre. I have just been reading that your wife Janine's father lives near Amiens, on another blog site? We have family who live east of Amiens, our eldest son is married to a french lady. c'est un petit monde...!
What a realistic dream! You had me thinking it really happened until you said you woke up! I like the picture too. That is a wonderful illustration of your dream!
I hope all is well with you.
Blessings!
Marguerite
I wonder what you were worrying about at the time of your dream that caused you to have a dream in which you were supposed to be in charge, but did not know what to do.
The lady who stole the shoes and clothing from the store was arrested. I do not know if she went to jail or paid a fine or both. The newspaper just lists the police activity. They do not usually follow-up with what happened unless it is a very serious crime.
As ever, Carol Suzanne
So, all that was a dream? unbelieveable. So ur dream make u believe u've been made a captain of a boat, that's so weird
That sounds like what I call real dreams, where everything seems so real that it is hard to get it out of your mind for a while. I also was believing that it was really happening, while I read it. I liked the way it ended with the spoon in the cup of coffee. That must have seemed so real at the time. The picture is really good as it depicts all that was happening in your dream right down to your duaghter smiling from the window.
A nice blog, Michel with an even nicer drawing.
Love
Edie Rose
oops! daughter not duaghter.
what a beautiful drawing....!
Michael,
I am so glad to hear from you. Thank you for stopping in.
I love your drawing and very real dream, huh? I enjoyed hearing about the adventure. Dreams are amazing.
Nice family photos...looks like a great time. Beautiful home.
Take care. Hope all is well.
Love & friendship,
~Kim~
What a funny dream! I rarely remember my dreams, so I love hearing about other people's. Great sketch, as always!!
I know what I want Michel, peace of mind, abundant health, some meaningful work, to serve God. Judi
I tagged you Michel
Shirley
What? A dream? Haha... I was telling my husband, "Hey he was a captain of a boat!"
You're cheeky!
Dreams are so much fun aren't they.
I have some fun dreams - a lot about swordfightintg! That's a great drawing that you did!
Salut Michel!
Tu as les expériences incroyables!
haha)
Aie une bonne semaine, Michel!
~Anne
that is a great dream! i only wish i could convey my dreams as well as you have!
wishing you all the best!
Thank you for the prayers for my friend Ben. He had decided to get the MRI he needed and look to actively treat his MS. Have a wonderful weekend! ~Midge
A very strange dream!! Thank you for your kind words!
Love,
Laurie
Hi, Michel: Just a quick note to let you know I'm back ... almost. I can't believe it's nearly a year since I've posted! I have been dealing with several health issues and should be able to start posting again shortly. Meanwhile, I hope you have been well, mon ami. You have been in my thoughts daily. Take care. Hugs, Nancy
Ohh my what a dream!! Love your sketch describing your dream, Michel. Isn't it funny how dreams merge with reality, as when you heard Janine stirring your coffee cup? The mind and subconcious is an incredible thing!
Thanks for sharing this with us.
That dream is so very real that you captured me completely! Have a wonderful day today, tomorrow and on and on
to you and Janine and the whole family
You had me fooled...ha,ha. I really thought they made you a capt'. What a fright to have a captain who doesn't know his own boat!!!
I really love the drawing that you made to go along with your dream, you are such a talented man.
U must be online right now. Becuae I just got done updating my web page and u comment me so fast...how are u doing sir? oh and thanks 4 the comment
Hello, Michel...thinking of you today, it is due to get very cold here tonight, and an ice storm on Sunday...I am having a dinner party that night, and maybe everyone has to sleep over! I'm making Beef Bourguignonne! I'll invite you and your wife over, too! Come around 6pm, okay! I posted some pictures of my jewelry, if you'd like to see! Love you, Lowie
well you were filled to the brim regardless of obstacles & your wheels surely work Michel lol great piece you had me until the end i draw my dreams too & frequently look back God bless love mag
Interesting dream. I wonder, what was it you ate before going to bed to cause a fascinating dream?
RYC: Ah come on, I know you can find six weird things. Do you have uneven toes? An extra toe? Do you have a routine, a "ritual" you perform before eating? Leaving the house?
Your stories are precious and priceless! Thank you so much for sharing them with us.
What a weird dream I was getting all confused reading it i was thinking well surely he was never a sailor i was quite relieved when i got to the end to see it was just a dream fancy you remembering it all I soon forget my dreams which hardly ever make sense anyway Love Marjie
Wow, that was some dream!
Loved the drawing, too.
Great dream Michel, thanks for sharing. I like your drawing too. Judi
Your life -- truly a field of dreams. Enjoyed that dream Michel.
Oh, I love this dream. Sometimes I dream of things I have not even thought! Is it not interesting what your mind can do whilst you are asleep? So Janine brings you a cup of coffee while you still are in bed...hmmm, I think you had better give her a big kiss!!!!
Thanks for coming by, Michel. The picture is indeed an old one. It is by Doré!
I join the rest i belived you the captain of the ferry boat! I dream a lot and always love to inturpet them to see if God is leading me some special way. Have a wouderful week-end love fancy
Salut Michel,
Bonne fin-semaine, Michel!
~Anne
It was a dream?? Interesting blog.
Hope you are having a great day.
The weather here is very cold.. Ice, snow, sleet.. Too dangerous to be driving on the streets. Hopefully, you are having better weather.
Have a good week.
christy
Quelle histoire sympathique!
Bises
Véronique
Your Parents et enfants picture is lovely, what a handsome family!
I love swans and a lot of other water birds they are so graceful and beautiful. Judi
in reply to ur comment: haha theres no rugby team at my school, unfortunately. also, about the toyota, it is a paper model. i hope it will work.
I was seasick once, but visiting here today did not bother me. Yay me!
great post - i loved it
neat dreaming!
love the sketch!! May be you would want to interpret the dream!! If you get a chance try reading " Interpretation of Dreams" by Sigmund Frued!!
with warm regards,
:)Ashar
Dreams can be so interesting and you did an excellent job of telling this one. You remembered a lot of it! We have had some very cold days here. The roads are fozen and ice weighs heavy in the trees. The top branches are bent over and sagging. The grass is sparling with white glitter and any puddle of water is now a frozen piece of ice inviting you to come slip and slid for fun. And I'm in Texas! Blessings, kc
Cat
God Bless!!!
(((SMILE)))
Michael,
The quilt squares are a combination of traditional pieced American quilt blocks (geometic designs made of small pieces of fabric sewn together) and appliqued and embroidered quilt blocks. The quilt will represtent the different seasons of the year in a stylized form.
Jeana and Terry have seven childrne, three boys and four girls. Six of the children are adopted. All of the children have special needs. The children are the most excited about staying in a hotel with an indoor swimming pool! They cannot imagine the aquarium and natural history museum, so that will be a wonderful experience for them. At the end of the day, the adults will all enjoy the spa pool while the children are swimming.
Carol Suzanne
Cela est une histoire merveilleuse.
How real your dream sounded! I have had dreams that seemed real as well.
Blessings to your family
Melody
