Sur le Pont d ' Avignon , on danse .
On Avignon ' s bridge , we dance .
English version below the pictures
On y danse , on y danse
Sur le Pont d ' Avignon
On y dans tout en rond "
Le Pont d ' Avignon . Avignon' s Bridge .
Photo M.Fauquet June 2006
Numerous bridges are famous in the world : Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco , Brooklyn Bridge in New York , Sydney Harbour bridge , Tower Bridge in London , The recent bridge of Shangai ; the Rialto of Venice , le Pont - Neuf or the Pont of Concorde in Paris , the Ponte Saint - Martin by Torino that has built before Christ etc … And there are many very antique bridges in Asia and South America . …. But there is Avignon ' s bridge in Provence !! ( or St Benezet ' s Bridge ) built over Rhone river. The first bridge had a wooden deck and stone piers built in 1187 has been destroyed by the river . Re- built in 1350 it was again destroyed by the river excepted 4 arches pictured above . This rest of bridge is a most remarkable example of medieval bridge design . In fact it is known by all the Frenchs and many strangers who studied French because a childish song :
" Sur le pont d'Avignon
On y danse , on y danse
Sur le Pont d ' Avignon
On y dans tout en rond "
Rough Translation :
" At the Avignon ' s bridge
we dance , we dance
At the Avignon ' s Bridge
We dance round in a circle "

Nous us on the bridge June 06
Of course we went on Avignon ' s bridge and there was many tourists . A young couple asked us to take a picture of them . I did and then they took us . They spoke an unknown language . But we underdtood !!!!!
Popes ' s Palace viewed from the bridge . Photo M.Fauquet Junne 06
From the bridge we had a view on the Palais des Papes ( Papal Palace built on the XIV century ) . The popes stayed in France in Avignon from 1309 to 1409 and built in two times this impressing medieval fortress . The recent part had a gothic style . So Avignon was the seat of the Christianity in the Western World at this time . Who can imagine this nowadays . It ' s why when we were in Avignon we were delighted with this strong perfume of history of France and Europe 700 years ago ..

How delightful that must have been. Walking the walk of Pope's of long ago. Beautiful country and such a stunning bridge. Thank you for sharing. I have talked to Marj and there is news about her on my site. Love to you and Janine
Nancy
You and Janine both look so healthy, you with your tan (or so the picture appears). I hope you have had a wonderful vacation as you toured such beautiful history. Your photography of the bridge is awesome.
I recently got to visit the golden gate bridge
ah, cette chanson...
bonjour, michel !
Just Gorgeous! Kinda looks like an American amusement park, but better, of course. The more you post, the more I would like to see France.
Lovely!!!!!!!!
I remember singing that song in French class
Bridges make meetings of star-crossed lovers possible
c'est un beau pont et chanson!
Across this bridge of technology I send you my regards, Grandfather! Blessings to you and your family ~ Paloma
What a beautiful piece of architecture! You both look so lovely and happy standing on the bridge. I can see why you were delighted to be there. I hope I can stand on that bridge some day.
the view is just placid...is that a little rectory or something built in the middle of the bridge
it is a week of beautiful bridges! i was on the golden gate this last weekend. i would like to visit this bridge one day, too. thank you for another inspiring post, michel! yay!
A broken bridge that will not bring you to the other side of the bridge and you do them on the bridge? dance, you start dancing; tout en rond because you cannot go further.

I love learning about European History! So interesting!
I am trying to add a picture here of a bridge in the town where I grew up. I hope that it works. If not, oh well!
<3,
Aubrey
Guess it didn't work!
Hi Michel: I love that fortress. The bridge looks very peaceful a beauty to take in with your eye's. You visit such interesting places which is very nice for us when you share.
Shirley
That song is about the only French I can remember
Janine and you are looking younger each time I see a new photo - what are you taking ??? I want some of it what ever it is .
Marie
i agree with MSB you both do look younger and younger. what a great photo the last one is especially. the last time you wrote about bridges i actually sang 'sur le pont' in my sleep and now i know what it looks like! thanks (and i am humming already)-g
There are many recipes for the bread machine can make as many kinds as you could by hand and a lot less trouble. Judi
"Les bell' dames font comm' çà
Et puis encore comm' çà"
I remember singing this song when I was in 1st and 2nd grade at the school in Paris
Very very beautiful picture of you and Janine
I am so happy that you had that wonderful new stranger take a picture of you and Janine
This was a lovely adventure!!
What beautiful scenery. I think I remember hearing that little song at some time. Maybe in a movie or something; or perhaps some children's songs. Can't remember. I agree that the two of you look wonderful. I think Janine, especially, looks younger than I---even though she is about 3 years older!!! It must be because of contentment with her husband??
The structures in the background, and the bridge itself, remind me of how much everyone worked to achieve an effect for the city and surrounding area. These were true craftsmen with great vision! Beautiful, Michel! I think the picture of you and Janine is wonderful too! How nice that you could help someone out and they in turn helped you out. - Rachel
just gorgeous pictures!!! wow...I'm seeing the world through your eyes Michel...well..at least..France! love the picture of you and Janine...you both look so good!!!
Take care and God bless you both!(HUGS)
I love history and think how wonderful it must be to live in an area where the buildings and bridges are hundreds of years old. I think about how many people stood in the very same spot you and Janine did in your photo above. Have you heard the saying, If walls could talk? I wonder what stories the bridge could tell? :O)
I love when you share the history and photos! Thank you for doing that!
Love to you and Janine,
xoxo Cat
Ahhh! More beautiful pictures of France. And of course, beautiful picture of you and Janine. To be able to touch history like you are, that is one of my dreams. Thanks for sharing your pictures.
Be blessed,
Melody
belles photos, Michel.
Thanks for sharing your vacation with us. I love history and am enjoying the pictures. It looks like you are having a fabulous time!
What a beautiful part of the world! The bridge is such a classic, and very distinguished looking. I recall singing that French song at school!
Lovely photo of you and Janine, Michel. Thanks for sharing your holiday with us.
RYC: Thanks for saying you don't think I'm lazy! I can be sometimes, and admit to being a hard judge of myself sometimes.
It is a beautiful bridge, and the papal palace is amazing. I just love really old architecture like that. It's something we just don't get here!!
Ah Michel, what pleasure you bring me, taking me along on your travels through your home country, showing me the good things that are there.
The photo of you and Janine on the bridge is absolutely enchanting, what a grand couple you are.
May I add to everyone else comments about how young and well you both look
. You have made me what to visit the South of France now you can shown that its not just full of playboys and racing cars. I have a friend who is traveling around France for two months soI am very jealous
i like that bridge song
Answer to mozle . the little building at the middle of the bridge is a chapel dedicated to St Nicholas and St Benezet .
What a wonderful place Michel - lovely picture of you and Janine.
the strong perfume of history....that is pure poetry. such a handsome couple!!
Now Michel you just stop that teasing me. Judi
that is just a fabulous photo of you and Janine, Michel~!
ryc: I had the priviledge of going to Quebec and seeing the St. Anne basilica, church, Momontse Falls and the St. Lawrence seaway, plains of Abraham at 14 (I appreciate it more now in retrospect than I could at 14)...this bridge is like much of that..holding a history more important than what it is....thank you for the beauty of that view.
How wonderful Migel!
Whoops, typo on your name Michel, sorry.
What a wonderful post! You are a beautiful couple...Very young!!
I commented on your donkey post. That is wonderful. I feel so lucky to have these wonderful and gentle creatures so close to my home.
Blessings!
Francoise
Just last weekend my sister and I took a drive over the Golden Gate Bridge. We went to SF to visit North Beach. There's a little video on my Xanga of the trip.
Very nice shots of Avignon. I sang that song years ago, and have taught children to sing it myself. Good to finally see the real thing!
Thank you for the nice compliment. You and your wife are a handsome couple. Judi

Great pictures, Michel. Especially the one with you two in it.
I like the sight of the city too. I bet it was a great trip. Blessings, kc
Longest bridge I was ever on is the Causeway Bridge over Lake Pontchartrain and I've been over it 4 times. There is no land in site for a long way. Bridges are interesting. Maybe I should just walk over instead of swimming!
So sorry for the confusion on my site. I re-worded to read a link to my paintings. There were others that I had confused too.
I love bridges. I work with engineers that develop and build them. The engineers are boring but the bridges they build are cool
Glad you had fun!
Parmi animaux, j'ajoute...).
Hi Michel: I meant to ask last time I visited....do you have covered bridge's there? A plant manager is boss over the entire plant and every worker in all departments. Yes we have breaks everyone gets a 30 minute break every 2 and a half hours though many workers take more however it's hard for machine operator's to get breaks because our machines keep running and can make a big mess while we are gone and it takes too long to get things back in order so I take 5 or 10 minute breaks sometimes hours apart to keep from returning to a mess. Plus I must not run below 94% on my machines and a long break would cost me if something went wrong. Sorry so long a comment
Shirley
i cant wait to see france for myself!
PLEASE VISIT MY SITE FOR URGENT PRAYER REQUEST ~ thankyou Michel!
Once again, magnificent views in your pictures. They make me envious of you.
On a side note, it's interesting that you understood the tourists' foreign language. I wonder how you managed to do that.
I used to sing this song as a child, in French! Imagine that. Thanks for showing me what it means.
Salut Michel, comment vas tu.
Les Photos sont vraiment beau
great to see you both travel. have fun!
Beautiful pictures! I always enjoy seeing pictures of you and Janine. The papal palace is impressive.
I have been gone so long that I have really missed a lot on your blog. I scrolled down and looked at all the pictures of you in one of your previous blogs and enjoyed them very much. I hope that I have time soon to come back and read the blogs that I missed.
your entry brought back many memories of singing that song when i was 8 years old, in french class! beautiful pictures.
when I make a million gabillion dollars I'm going to build a fortress like. One for me and one for Solon. And I'll make a special guest wing and you and Janine would be my very FIRST guests.
It could happen!!!!
I would love to visit this bridge oneday! It looks wonderful - - I was unaware that the popes used to stay in this area and had built that fortress as well. The history of France, and of Europe, fascinates me!
Have a wonderful Sunday, Michel!
this is one of my Sarah's favorite places i think. thank you for your comment. I trust you and the Mrs. are well....blessings!! melinda
Have you heard of the other site called myspace. maybe you should look into it? http://www.myspace.com and how are you and what have you been up to?
Billy
Hello Michel, lovely pictures, as usual.
I have posted a picture on my most recent entry that I took with you in mind! I wanted to take a picture of the older woman with her dog as it faced the mighty lion, but she hid from view at the last second. For some reason, I thought it was so humorous, and I thought that you might like it, too.
Hello hope all is well with you I love my room and the bed . Baby kitten's still fighting he's getting stronger he's so cute but it wares me out lol but if he becomes a big kitty it will be worh all my lack of sleep . God Bless

After seeing these pictures and reading your post, I vow to visit here someday!!! What a wonderful post, Michael!! You and Janine are lovely...very handsome! Please continue to post pictures and text, Michael, for they make me smile and dream.
And the bridge is but a metaphor for the world - upon which we all dance.
The Papal Palace looks like a place I'd like to explore!
It is good you and your wife are able to enjoy all your travels and seeing these sites. You look like a very happy couple who know how to enjoy life
