Les sportives .
The sportwomen .
English version below the pictures

Are there any physically fit women ? Yes of course , and more and more . I met one of them ! She is a young British woman , one of my daughter ' s friend who was at our home recently . Every morning she runs about 4 miles ( or more ) in the town then made physical exercises as the photos above show . I was really amazed and the grandchildren too .
Amazed ? After all this looks normal . Why a woman wouldn' t play any sport ? Isn' t there as many women athlete as men ? And why to make an entry about this topic ? However remember rights to sports for women started recently at the beginning of the 20th century . In the same way the right to vote for women in France started only in 1945 ! What looks natural nowadays was a conquest for the women who showed they had the same abilities as the men in all of the fields ..
And what about the feminity for those sportwomen ? She keep their feminity obviously and they are very attractive . The Xangan sportwomen wont tell me the opposite . Indeed in Xangaland there are many sportwomen . I cannot quote all of them but when I type this I think of mommers ( skating ) , queenie ( biking ) , lesley_redd ( running ) , liviatasia ( medieval swordfighting ) etc …… without forget all of them who go to the gym or the pool such Aslans_daughter for example !
At last I wonder if the effort demanded by sport for more perfection cannot be also found in other fields such : knitting , crochetting , cooking , GARDENING , painting etc … And is not the writer who juggles with words and ideas for a perfect writing , a mental sportwoman or sportman ?
Finally isn' t sport a state of mind .?

I think that anything could really be a sport. I find that I get a good work out when I am running to catch my train at the end of the day! That is good exerscise!
I like the pictures, they look like pictures of myself when I was nannying! I used to do exerscises like that with the children!
<3,
Aubrey
Ma soeur est une sportive.
Ah, Michael, you are so correct. Things have changed so much when it concerns women and sports. When I was in high school the boys were given much equipment for their sports. They played teams from other schools, as well as teams within the school. Other than a few balls, there was no equipment for the girls. There was no team competition against other schools, or even intermural competition at the school. I played basketball, but even the rules at that time were different for girls. Now I see even young girls playing in sports and being physically fit.
I do think that gardening can be as good physically as many sports. While other pursuits, such as knitting, can require an equally high level of skill (compared to a sport), they do not provide physical fitness. However, they do give much satisfaction.
As ever, Carol
Playing airplane with grands is so much fun...and good exercise too. We also like to trampoline and swim together. I'm not as agile as I once was, but they sleep so well after having a day of sport.
Wonderful blog!
Women who farm are very athletic! It used to be our athletics were more in our daily work, and since we are not agrarian, we get athletics from sports.
Hi.
Thanks for the link.
john
Yes...a state of mind!
Bonjour, Michel!
I love exercising and working out. I have my elliptical machine that I use. I also enjoy jogging and walking. I try to do at least a mile or two a day. I also go swimming about three times a week. I think there is joy found in it when you are productive. Although, I don't mind being lazy either!
I don't think I could run four miles, but I will gladly clap for those that can.
I am glad that females are making a name for themselves in the sporting world. I think that we are just as capable as men are!
Have a wonderful week, Michel!
God bless.
I love this post, I am not a "sportswoman" but I bike every day, 3 times a week I work out in the gym, I need to do it for my health, but I enjoy the relaxing "sport" of juggling with words when I play scrabble. Yes I agree with you that it is a stae of mind, mental and physical health go hand in hand.
RITA.
well, i am a walker....that might not count, but i love it. blessings !! melinda
wonderful thoughts my friend.. thought provoking.. sport is indeed a state of mind.
You raise provoking questions, Michel. I'm quite lazy myself, but I'm proud of women out there who are on par with men in any given field, especially in sports.
Very true...sports has changed a lot for the women who wish to take it up. I've never been one to run or walk fast pace or be in sports, I like being a homemaker best but glad women have fought for their rights in sports. Very good Blog Michel
Shirley
Hello, there! I enjoy reading your blog...although I haven't visited it in quite a while! You have such insight...I wish I had done more sports when I was growing up, although I was on the ski team in HS...now that I love in Texas, I's have to travel some to find snow! Cheers, lowie
Yes, Michel, I think that sports are a state of mind. With physical activity, we use our bodies and energy as our tools rather than a garden hoe, paintbrush, or instrument. I used to call myself an athlete and indeed I was. From the time I was in high school, I played team softball, swam, played volleyball, snow skiing, water skiing, raquetball, and backpacking. Makes me tired just thinking of it. But they were fun times. I still love the pure joy that comes from doing something that takes physical skill but since Jim has been hurt these past 6 years, our lifestyle changed so much. I don't do too much besides hiking and swimming and occasionally, softball.
I also remember the prejudice that I experienced when I played different sports with men. There are still a lot of macho attitudes in America where men think that women are inferior. I played on a softball team where I was more skilled than half of the men on the team but many wouldn't play with me because I'm a woman.
Your daughter's friend looks like a lovely girl and a great role model for your grandchildren!
♥
Yay Michel!! your daughter's friend is very beautiful. I love this blog about fitness. It is so good to be fit and to exercise every day, if even for 15 or twenty minutes. dancing is also a great way to exercise!!
I do love figure skating very much. It is like dancing and skating together
This is a really lovely blog today!
I have been exercising inside for many days now... it has been too hot to be outside, and the ice rink does not have open time in the summer... so I have been dancing
Reading this today makes me happy. I have been very discouraged becuase I still have the poison ivy rash and it became bad again so I have to take more Prednisone which makes me feel very strange (jittery and a headache).
Thank you for being a wonderful friend Michel. Love to you and Janine
~Rosemary
I wish I enjoyed sports, but I don't. I would like to be in better shape.
I still love running at 40! Just a few years ago I was a body builder. You just never know about people! lol
I think I am more of a mental sportswoman, as I love playing with words and writing. I should make an effort to exercise more though. Maybe it will help with my chronic fatigue.
And is not the writer who juggles with words and ideas for a perfect writing , a mental sportwoman or sportman ?
LOL. Well not where the waistline is concerned! Although I do get my workouts from pounding out my rather large slabs of clay for my pottery, attempting to set up my loom(which is taller than I am) and chasing yet another box of miniscule beads that was knocked off my workbench to roll mercilessly around the crooks and crevices of my workshop. Workout indeed!
If it is true sport...coordination and talent is required...to run and be athletic....if it is my sport it is the mind that has to be coordinated so I can keep ahead of my very young co workers

You do me great honor, my friend, to include me in your list of "sportswomen". That is probably the first time in my life that I could be in that catagory. And I am glad to know that I can be included in several other things you mentioned. Perhaps there should be a catagory for "All Around Woman"?! The women who, each day, tackle more than one job, who cooks and cleans, takes on a sport to stay healthy, "balances" her checkbook, and still tries to look her best each day. Well...we can try, my friend. I enjoyed your entry. You definitely have a following, Michel! Hugs to you, my friend! - Rachel
When I was (much!) younger and still in school, I absolutely loved to play badminton, and I got to be pretty good at it in our backyard games. I was pretty good at softball, too, because my Dad used to play a lot with my brother and I. One time in Junior High at the end of the year, the boys class played against the girls, and I got a two-base hit, which was the best of all the girls. Obviously it meant a lot to me, since I've never forgotten it!
I am old enough to recall the difficulties of women playing sports competitively.
Today, though, the closest I could be to a "sportswoman" is by - just being a good sport! : )
hmmm.Michel...the only "sport" I have is getting up and going to the "potty" a few times a day!!! LOL
take care and God bless you and Janine!!(((HUGS)))
Hope all is well God Bless

I am just reading this blog after coming back from the gym
You are right Michel women today want to take up more sports and be fitter. I would not believe you if you said 5 years ago that I would be going to the gym 3 times a week.
Your daughter's friend was very lucky to be at your house
Did she enjoy a few bottles of wine from your cellar
I did not realise that it was so recently that French women got the vote, here it was 1920
Yes, I'm sure it must be a state of mind...I have a lazy mind perhaps? I do a lot of walking though!
This post is really about the ladies, just thought I'd comment though.
RYC Ha Ha Ha David is my husband!!!!
Dear Michel, yes you have to have a certain state of mind - I know this because I am finding it easier to get into a way of thinking during the run I am doing.
Think of me tomorrow - I have another 3 mile run Thursday night. Hopefully one day I will get so fit enough to be able to run 4 miles 3 times aweek. I know it will happen.
Thank you for the promotion of my endeavours. *waves*
I'm very sporty - well I have the most exercised fingers, always busy on the keyboard
I'm afraid that the total amount of exercise I take walking up and down the stairs to the PC. At my age do I need to be fit ?????
Marie
I only understood half what ya wrote..............
Those summertime pics are treasures.............
i look at the stuff i do as keeping my mind and body tuned so i can keep doing what i like for a very long time. yay all of us sports men and women! wonderful inspiring blog, as usual, m!
It good to be in shape
I did. Ive played soccer on and off. Soccer isnt as big here in america.. but I think it is an awesome sport, an all-around wonderful sport.. in skill, technique, body wellbeing.. etc. and not to mention lots of fun. I enjoy the traditional american sports.. football, basketball, etc.. but I think soccer a lot more engaging and intriguing.
Hi Michel!
Yes, health and fitness is definately a state of mind...............yet there must be balance in all we do.
I am glad that you liked the poem by William Ross Wallace. It is hard to find poets who capture such wonderful sentements as the poets from the turn of the last century.
Your posts are always an education for me and make me think...........well done! I hope that you will have a wonderful day/night.
Be blessed dear boy!
Your Aussie sis',
Narelle (0=`~
I consider chasing 2 small children all day a sport!
Especially when they've been sick! Thank you for your well wishes. We are better now.
Keeping a house, raising children, teaching school...... these all seem like sports at times!
Blessings, kc
thank-you very much for the lovely positive words. I had never thought of the recent development of women in sports before... but I should celebrate by going to the gym tomorrow!
And of course, I must agree with your sentiment that "sport is a state of mind."
yes i agree, our coach always says that the 'quality' of our mind is not very high so we keep on losing even if we're capable of winning.
I've not been around for too long! Looks like I've a lot of reading to catch up on.
The only exercise I'm doing is to holler at my students! Haha... I do like swimming but it's very troublesome to travel to the pool!
You are right , there are more and more fit woman and there less and less woman in the kitchen and we have to go to Mc donalds , pizza hut, to buy ready food, tv dinners and so on. But it is ok for me , I can cook a egg an boil water.
(A)Lumette thanks you for the name.
I am afraid that I do not get that much exercise through sports now, but I used to play softball, and walk two to five miles a day about four days a week. I also jumped rope on a daily basis. I refused to let my son mow the lawns, because I wanted to do it for the exercise. It really tones your body.
About the only thing that I do now is lift a couple two pound weights, which does help some. I think that most any woman that has children probably gets plenty of exercise.
Very nice blog, Michel!!! You seem to put a lot of thought into making your blogs interesting for us.
As for my friend, he is feeling better, but will be seeing the specialist again in September.
Have a greaty week!!!
Edie Rose
That is exactly where any sport is-----in my mind!! Everyone who knows me, knows I avoid sports of any sort. I have not liked anything very physical since I was small. In high school, I went roller skating once in a while at a rink near where we lived. When our boys were still living at home, we would go camping, and I would enjoy walking and hiking the trails. Even biking in the woods. But that is as far as it would go.
I admire everyone who goes out and does all these activities. Think it is wonderful. Our younger son runs many miles a week. He says it relieves his stress. He lives along the shore of Lake Michigan, and there is a wonderful asphalt bike/walking path along the lake that runs 6 miles between two cities. He has done one full marathon, and two or three 1/2 marathons.
I subscribe to daily health tips from realage.com. They are timely and interesting. From those tips I saved this one:
If you'd like to build strong bones without joining a gym, consider
planting a garden.
In an analysis of several different physical activities, only yard work
and weight lifting turned out to be good bone builders. In fact, raking
mulch, planting bushes, and pulling weeds -- or doing whatever your
green space takes -- were even better for bones than jogging.
Researchers suspect that the digging, squatting, lifting, and pushing
that yard work entails easily equals a weight workout.
You are so sweet to wish me Birthday greetings! Merci....merci encore merci. Of course, I'm not very old just yet. Since the spirit doesn't age, I feel just the same as I did at 29..I feel better really!
I walk the treadmill...does that count as a sportswoman? Symbolreader is right...Gardening is the best exercise. Housework, pushing a vacuum and scrubbing floors on hands and knees...all good exercise. Pushing away from the table...that's the best.
You asked about John's twin sister being so much younger than John?? She was born an hour later and she looks quite young and attractive. She's 76(she doesn't like people knowing her age but...she's a great grandma so you know she's older than 29!
Great post Michel! You make me feel like beginning to start running...or atleast to exercise. Maybe for christmas I can ask my husband for a bike!
I think it's so important for the mind and body to be physically active!
When my dogs were younger and I was regularly training them for obedience trials, I would spend up to two hours per day running with them for heeling, and various other exercises required to compete in trials. It was lots of hard work, but always made me feel better for having trained the dogs and exercised myself. You've brought up some very important points in your blog, Michel.
I have to tell you, I love the cute way you express yourself in English! Thanks for your lovely comments on my Xanga break post.
Yes--it is a state of mind from which the body benefits!
And no, I don't live in Northern Ontario, but Southern Ontario. It does get over 30C here in the summer months. In Northern Ontario the mosquitos and blackflies are worse than they are here--probably because there is so much swamp and bog--even though the summers are shorter and cooler.
Ah, but if you look more closely you will see that many of us are smiling! Because the exercise was successful and we won the competition again!
I do not have good coordination so I don't play sports. I have used aerobics since I was in my twenties and still go to the YMCA six days a week. It improves my attitude! I like myself a little better!
Well, I do juggle words and like word puzzles so maybe I am a sportswoman.
This is a goodly blog, Michel!
i sometimes to runnig and i also do a bit of ball games
I think women are more physically fit than they ever have been and more conscious of taking care of their bodies. Judi
I think it's great for both men and women to get involved in as many sports or hobbies as will interest them. I envy those people who do these things so well and are in such great shape too! It is the best way to have fun!
Love the pictures! Have a great weekend, Michel!
Thanks for visiting, Michel...hope to see you around again soon! Have a lovely weekend, and thank you for the compliments on my pictures, too...hugs!
Glad you liked my post Michel!
and the smiley was cute............
if not a bit Pinochio.........ish
lol
bless you lad!
My comment about the sailor was a joke. Because I am 2/3 nurse I want 2/3 a sailor. Think about it.
Yes, I am starting to swim again every day like it use to in the summer. Our pool was installed just a few days ago. It is small and modest but at least I can exersize again. I don't imagine I'll get in top shape like the young woman in the photo. The last photo reminds me of when I did rolly pollies with my own children about 25 years ago.
Hello. Exercising is good for you. When you sweat you can drink Gatorade.
Michel,
Mimi
You get a lot of comments Michel!
The town in the header on my blog is where I live, Hastings. It's on the south coast 60 miles west of Dover. The pictures were taken from my window, (I live on a hill) Looking west toward Eastbourne.

To answer your question, Gatorade is a good ol' American sports beverage that athletes use to replentish fluids that are lost while exercizing.
ryc: Yes, I do believe the News is manipulated at times by the government, especially in the USA.
Folkestone is very near me as you must know...have you ever been to Hastings?
I remember a boyfriend that once told me....Guys don't like girls who can beat them at anything. I was a sprinter and took a lot of state championships when I was quite young. I think athletics for girls is great and teaches them spirit and an independence of their own. I ran two miles for many years and now just get on a treadmill and walk.
Thank you for the good wishes for Mom, she is holding her own in her fight with her cancer. At this point it is inoperable and they can only hope to shrink it and or arrest its growth to buy her time.
Love Brenda
Thanks for the compliment Michel on my picture of driving the boat. My daughter is worried because I could only walk about a mile on the beach this time usually walk about four miles. It is beautiful there. I had a lot of fun. Judi
I have a lot of back pain. I exercise walk on my treadmill and lift weights, ride the exercise bike but when I walk to far my back hurts. My doctor cannot find why it hurts so bad. Judi
Great blog
I'm from Canada!
This reminds me of what i used to do many years ago. Sometimes 60 pushups in an evening. Lots of walking. Those were the days.
I need to exercise and lose weight, I am really out of shape! Your grandsons are very lucky to have a Grandpa like you.
Salut!
Bon week-end, Michel!
Being beyond the physical condition to do active sports I must exert my mind to the utmost, crossword puzzles, word games against self, Scrabble and UpWords, 500 rummy and most anything to keep my mind revving.
I admire to the max those who can do physical sports, those who have the strength and coordination. And above all I admire the women who have become so proficient in so many sports once denied them.
Thanks for the great entry.
I use to be in sports. But since I hurt my knee, I need to be careful. But I do enjoy the sport of gardening.
Good morning, Michel! Thank you for taking the time to read my pages and view the Paris photos I've uploaded so far. I will try to finish them soon. I loved our trip to Paris and am so sorry to have missed the wonderful opportunity of meeting you and of seeing your beautiful area of France too. I hope we can change that next time....or perhaps you'll come visit us in the states? I am trying to get caught up around here. It will be easier once the construction is finished.
i used to play softball and volleyball when I was in my teens - i was a real tomboy. now all I do is walk. lol
it is a state of mind in sport but one that here in the US we often neglect or miss. It is something we should try harder to embrace...
The mind never gets old even though the body parts just aren't as limber as they used to be. I hear too many creeks when I walk.
oh Michel,, what a great post!!!! RYC,, Sheilah is my Best Friend of 30 years. Her mom died of Alzheimers on 7/24, same as my Papa. she is having quite the battle with the loss. And you are correct about the tone as well!! Much Different!!!! Happiness is a state of mind I suppose!! I guess my sport is caring!! till next time be safe!! abrazos y besos siempre
Thanks for the nice thoughts! After walking more than 10 miles each day while in Munich, I think that and your post have inspired me to start working out again.
I should be putting up a few Munich pictures each day. My photos from the Glyptothek (sculpture) are especially nice on account of the light. Those should be posted by next weekend.
Wow, running 4 miles a day, that's impressive! You are to be commended on the topic of this entry, as well as the mix of philosophy and sociology.Your modern outlook on so many things, along with your endearing consideration, is what makes you so charming.
I had no idea that women got the vote so recently in France! I thought the USA was lagging when they waited til 1921, so it's surprising to see other places were even later.
May we all have a sports state of mind on my treadmill now. Judi
There you go-- I'm a mental sportswoman juggling all those words. I like that
how i wish i were far more sporty - like when i was younger!
kudos to your daughter's friend!
Hi Michel hope all is well with you just popped in to see what has been happening. Take care
Angela
Very nice post! RYC: I am doing well. How are you?

Supermom?
Hello Michel: Just popping back to say hello. Looks like we may get a thunderstorm here which would be nice as we need the rain. Hope you are enjoying a relaxing day weather it's in your yard or just relaxing in a chair reading.
Shirley
People who think women can't be athletic are sexist who are evil! *growls*
Haha, wonderful post though.
I came across your site and I subscribed (I hope that you don't mind). I enjoyed reading your posts. Have a wonderful week!
sport is definitely good for everyone. keeping ones body active also helps with the mind as well, and overall helps you be able to enjoy life to it's fullest. hope all's going well!
I used to be very sporty, I enjoyed being more athletic, but when my children came along, with each one I became more settled and had to become more calm to keep them settled. I enjoy watching my children's and grand childrens' athletic abilities and their physical and emotional strengths... I do wish I still had the energy and physical strengths I had in my 20s and 30s, I could get so much more accomplished
. There is beauty and sport in these other hobbies and arts too (the cooking, knitting, gardening, painting, writing, etc... )
I am meagerly learning French since I was 15 and when it is spoken..I understand it..but I have to translate it mentally and then hope I got the phrase or response right when I convert to French again..by then..the conversation is dead...mostly, I smile, get about 75% of what is said and hope someone didn't yell "hurry, there is a fire" in the 25% I normally have flying over my head.
I was in the Army in Germany for about a year and these pictures and this story remind me so much of the people there..it was very nice, wonderful and just a good day to be had by all in the company of other exceptional people...
Mental fitness and physical go hand in hand I believe in the fullness of the quality of life...one without the other is at best millieure (spelling?)...I agree, it is a state of mind and enaction to fait accompli it as well though..
a toute a l'heure

Yes we all have our life crisis but it depends on what we think about it how we react. Thanks for being my friend Michel and thanks for always coming by and commenting. I enjoy you so much, Judi
I can't wait until the day I get to send you a picture of me wearing the Crown.
It's never happened in our 'Kingdom', so I want to be the first!
Thanks for always being so supportive. It's cool that you understand my passion.
And you live smack dab in the middle of my dream country!!!!
