Paix dans le potager .
Peace in the vegetable garden

   Voici une vue partielle de notre potager au 4 Août 2006 dernier . Au premier plan environ 1000 jeunes poireaux viennent d ' être plantés , puis la salade , deux lignes de céleri et de persil , enfin un grand plant de haricots verts . Sur la photo on ne peut voir le bout du jardin les cornichons , carottes et courgettes . Nous vivons en ville mais dans ce jardin on se croirait à la campagne . C ' est très apaisant .

   Here is a part view of our vegetable garden on the last 4^th of August 2006 . At the foreground , about 1000 young leeks have just been planted , then salad , two row of celeri and parsley , at last a large patch of green beans . On the picture below you cannot see at the other end of the garden : gherkins , carrots .and squashes ( except on the second picture ) .. We live in a town but in this garden we have the feeling to be in the countryside . It ' s very peaceful

    Ma femme Janine aime récolter . Ce jour - là elle avait cueilli deux seaux de haricots puis elle était revenu cueillir les cornichons . Ce sont eux qu 'elle porte dans l ' allée pour aller examiner les tomates .

   My wife Janine loves to harvest . This day she picked two buckets of green beans then then she came again to pick up gherkins . On the picture she carries them and is going to check the tomatoes .

Nos petits - enfants Manon et Antoine étaient là et étaient heureux de cueillir les courgettes et le courgettes spagettis avec    leur grand ' mère et de les rapporter trioumphalement à la maison .

Our grand children Manon and Antoine were there and were happy to pick up squashes and spaghetti squashes with their grandmother and bring back them triumphantly at home ( photo below )

Voici une part de la récolte ce jour - là . N ' est - ce pas beau ? J ' avoue que cela enchante mes yeux .Je jubile en voyant ces produits de la terre et de notre travail !

   Here is a part of the crop , on this day . Isn' t it beautiful ? I confess this enchants my sight ! I am rejoiced to see those products of the ground and of our work !

Civisme ou cynisme ?
Citizenship or cynicism ?

   Je marchais le long d 'un quai au bord d ' un canal quelque part en France . Soudainement je vis un panneau inhabituel ( 1^ère photo ) . Je l ' ai trouvé amusant . Quel citoyen permettrait à son chien de faire cela sur le quai . C ' est dégoûtant ! Vous pouvez glisser dessus et tomber dans le canal !

   Cependant 4 mètres plus loin je trouvais la " chose " ( 2^ème photo ) . Ainsi quelqu ' un avait permis à son chien de faire ses besoins là . Je l ' imagine tenant la laisse en attendant que cela se termine . Et cet homme ( ou femme ) n ' avait pas enlevé la chose avec un sac en plastique pour la jeter dans une corbeille ou une poubelle comme tout bon citoyen ! Ou bien il n ' avait pas vu le panneau et dans ce cas il était aveugle mais de toute façon il ne respectait pas autrui , ou bien il ( elle ) avait vu le panneau et dans ce cas il n ' obéissait pas aux règles établies démocratiquement par la municipalité . Est - ce cela un esprit de bonne citoyenneté ?

    Mieux , peut être avait - il vu le panneau et volontairement par dérision il se réjouissait e voir son chien faire son " affaire " à cet endroit . Dans ce cas c ' est du pur cynisme !

   Et qu 'en est - il de moi ? Peut - être qu ' après " ces profondes réflexions " j ' aurais du ramasser la chose avec un morceau de papier et la jeter dans le canal ! L ' ai - he fait ? Non . Aisi , finalement je n ' ai pas assez de respect pour les autres , je ne suis pas suffisamment bon citoyen et voire un peu cynique ? Horreur ! Je me sens un peu coupable !    Nul n ' est totalement innocent .

I was walking on a promenade at the side of a canal somewhere in France . Suddenly I saw this unusual sign ( first picture above ) . I found it funny . What citizen would allow his dog to do this on the promenade ? It ' s degusting and also dangerous ! You may slip on it and fall in the canal !

   However 4 meters further I found the " thing " ( picture 2 above ) . " Horribile visu " ! So someone had allowed his dog to do his needs there . I imagined him holding the leash in waiting for the end . And this man ( or woman) did not pick up this thing with a plastic bag to put it in a litter or a bin like all good citizen ! Whether he didnt see the sign and in this case he ( she ) is blind but anyway there is no respect for the others , whether he ( she ) saw the sign and in this case he didn' t obey to the municipal democratic rule . Is that a good citizenship spirit ?

And more perhaps he saw the sign and voluntarily to mock it he enjoyed to see his dog makes his affair at this place . In this case it is pure cynicism .

   And what about me . Perhaps after those " deep reflections " I had to pick the thing with a bit of paper to throw it in the canal ! Did I do it ? No . So finally I have no enough respect of others , I am not enough a good citizen and I am a bit cynic by the way ! Horror ! I feel guilty . No one is totaly innocent .

NB : cynicism ( cynique ) comes from ancient Greek word : kunikos = chien ( in French ) = dog ( in English )

De nombreux ponts sont célèbres dans le monde : Golden gate bridge à San Francisco , le Pont de Brooklyn à New york , le pont du port de Sydney , Tower Bridge à Londres , le récent pont de Shangai , le Rialto de Venise , le Pont6 Neuf ou le Pont de la Concorde à Paris , le Pont St Martin près de Turin qui a été construit avant Jésus - Christ etc ….Et il y a de nombreux très vieux ponts en Asie et en Amérique du Sud ….. Mais il y a le Pont d ' Avignon en Provence !! ( ou Pont St Benezet ) construit sur le Rhone . Le premier pont avec un tablier en bois et des piliers en pierre construit en 1187 a été détruit par le fleuve . Reconstruit en 1350 il été encore détruit par la rivière excepté 4 arches ( photo ci - dessous ) . Ce reste de pont est un des plus remarquable exemple de plan de construction de pont au Moyen - Age . En fait il est connu de tous les Français et de beaucoup d ' étrangers ayant étudié la langue française par une comptine enfantine.:

Numerous bridges are famous in the world : Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco , Brooklyn Bridge in New York , Sydney Harbour bridge , Tower Bridge in London , The recent bridge of Shangai ; the Rialto of Venice , le Pont - Neuf or the Pont of Concorde in Paris , the Ponte Saint - Martin by Torino that has built before Christ etc … And there are many very antique bridges in Asia and South America . …. But there is Avignon ' s bridge in Provence !! ( or St Benezet ' s Bridge ) built over Rhone river. The first bridge had a wooden deck and stone piers built in 1187 has been destroyed by the river . Re- built in 1350 it was again destroyed by the river excepted 4 arches pictured above . This rest of bridge is a most remarkable example of medieval bridge design . In fact it is known by all the Frenchs and many strangers who studied French because a childish song :

" Sur le pont d'Avignon
On y danse , on y danse
Sur le Pont d ' Avignon
On y dans tout en rond "

Rough Translation :

" At the Avignon ' s bridge
we dance , we dance
At the Avignon ' s Bridge
We dance round in a circle "

Naturellement nous sommes allés sur le Pont d ' Avignon et il ya vait beaucoup de touristes . Un jeune couple nous demanda de les prendre en photo . Je pris la photo et ils nous photographièrent ensuite . Ils parlaient un langage inconnu mais nous comprîmes .

Of course we went on Avignon ' s bridge and there was many tourists . A young couple asked us to take a picture of them . I did and then they took us . They spoke an unknown language . But we underdtood !!!!!

   Depuis le pont nous avions une vue du Palais des Papes construit au XIV ème siècle . Les papes séjournèrent en France à Avignon de 1309 à 1409 et construisirent en deux temps cette impressionnante forteresse médiévale . La partie la plus récente est de style gothique . Ainsi Avignon était à ce moment là le siège de la Chrétienté du monde occidental . Qui peut imaginer ceci de nos jours ? C ' est pourquoi en Avignon nous avons apprécié ce fort parfum d ' histoire de France et d ' Europe d 'il y a 700 ans

From the bridge we had a view on the Palais des Papes ( Papal Palace built on the XIV century ) . The popes stayed in France in Avignon from 1309 to 1409 and built in two times this impressing medieval fortress . The recent part had a gothic style . So Avignon was the seat of the Christianity in the Western World at this time . Who can imagine this nowadays . It ' s why when we were in Avignon we were delighted with this strong perfume of history of France and Europe 700 years ago ..

Y a - t - il des femmes sportives ? Oui , bien sûr et de plus en plus . Et j ' en ai rencontré une ! c ' est une jeune Anglaise , amie d ' une de mes filles qui était à la maison récemment . Chaque matin elle court environ 6 km dans la ville puis elle pratique des exercices comme ceux montrés par les photos .ci - dessous . J ' étais vraiment émerveillé et les petits enfants aussi !!!

Emerveillé ? Après tout cela semble normal qu 'une femme pratique un sport . N ' y a - t il pas autant d ' athlètes femmes que d ' hommes . Pourquoi faire une entrée là - dessus ? Cependant souvenons - nous que le droit au sport pour les femmes ne s ' est développé qu ' à partir du début du 20 ème siècle . De même que le droit de vote des femmes en France fut obtenu seulement en 1945 ! J ' étais donc ravi de voir une authentique sportive .Ce qui semble naturel aujourd 'hui fut une victoire pour les femmes qui montrèrent qu 'elles pouvaient avoir les mêmes capacités que les hommes dans tous les domaines .

Et que devient la féminité chez ces sportives .? Elles conservent leur féminité et sont très attractives . Ce n ' est pas les sportives de Xanga qui me diront le contraire . En effet au pays de Xanga il y a de nombreuse sportives . Je ne peux pas citer chacune mais quand je tape ceci je pense à Mommers ( patinage ) , Quennie ( vélo ) , Leisley- redd - course ) , Liviastasia ( combat médiéval à l ' épée ) etc … et toutes celles qui vont à la gym ou à la piscine comme Aslan- Daughter par exemple !

Enfin je me demande si l ' effort demandé par le sport pour plus de perfection ne se retrouve pas en d ' autre domaines : le tricot , le crochet , la cuisine etc ….. Et l ' écrivain qui jongle avec les mots et les idées n ' est - il pas un sportif mental ?

Finalement le sport n ' est - il pas un état d ' esprit ?

Are there any physically fit women ? Yes of course , and more and more . I met one of them ! She is a young British woman , one of my daughter ' s friend who was at our home recently . Every morning she runs about 4 miles ( or more ) in the town then made physical exercises as the photos above show . I was really amazed and the grandchildren too .

Amazed ? After all this looks normal . Why a woman wouldn' t play any sport ? Isn' t there as many women athlete as men ? And why to make an entry about this topic ? However remember rights to sports for women started recently at the beginning of the 20^th century . In the same way the right to vote for women in France started only in 1945 ! What looks natural nowadays was a conquest for the women who showed they had the same abilities as the men in all of the fields ..

And what about the feminity for those sportwomen ? She keep their feminity obviously and they are very attractive . The Xangan sportwomen wont tell me the opposite . Indeed in Xangaland there are many sportwomen . I cannot quote all of them but when I type this I think of mommers ( skating ) , queenie ( biking ) , lesley_redd ( running ) , liviatasia ( medieval swordfighting ) etc …… without forget all of them who go to the gym or the pool such Aslans_daughter for example !

At last I wonder if the effort demanded by sport for more perfection cannot be also found in other fields such : knitting , crochetting , cooking , GARDENING , painting etc … And is not the writer who juggles with words and ideas for a perfect writing , a mental sportwoman or sportman ?

Finally isn' t sport a state of mind .?

Van Gogh , la Provence et nous .

Van Gogh , Provence and us .

Nous avons séjourné en Provence durant une semaine en Juin exactement entre les deux villes où a vécu le fameux peintre Vincent Van Gogh en 1888 et 1889 : Arles et St Rémy de Provence ( 15 km environ ) . Le premier jour de notre arrivée nous sommes allés au Centre d ' Art Présence Van Gogh à St Rémy et là tout était si bien expliqué avec documents et une superbe video que notre séjour allait devenir un séjour Van Gogh . Il a peint à Arles et dans la campagne de St Rémy . Tout ce que nous pouvions voir et admirer , il l ' avait peint . Nous avons vécu dans son souvenir . Ci dessous quelques exemples de paysages qui nous ont fait vivre avec lui .

We have stayed in Provence during a week in June exactly between the two towns where the famous painter Vincent Van Gogh lived in 1888 and 1889 : Arles and Saint - Remy de Provence . ( about 15 km ) . The fist day of our stay we went to the Center Art Presence Van Gogh in St Remy and , there , all was so well explained with documents and a superb video than our stay was going to become a Van Gogh stay . He painted in Arles and in the country side around St Remy . All of things we could see and admire , he had painted them . We lived in his memory . Below some examples of landscapes that make us live with him .

  Quand Van Gogh arriva à Arles en 1888 il fut frappé d ' émerveillemnt par l ' intense lumière et sa pureté comme le montre la photo ci - dessus. C ' était une découverte pour lui qui venait du Nord , de la Hollande où il est né puis de Paris , régions au ciel nébuleux . Il se mit à peindre avec ardeur et son souci était d ' exprimer cette lumière et les vives couleurs qu ' elle engendrait ..Sa peinture se transforma .

When Van gogh arrived in Arles in 1888 he was striken with amazement by the intense light and its purity as the picture above shows . It was a discovery for him who came from Hollande where he was born and Paris , areas with a misty sky . I started to paint with frenzy and what he wanted was to express this light and the brillant colors that it generated . His painting was transformed .



Van Gogh a peint plusieurs tableaux de cafés en Arles   et aussi de la maison où il habitait : la Maison Jaune . Couleur vive !

Van Gogh made some paintings of cafes in Arles and also of the " Yellow House " where he lived . Bright color !

     Les oliviers .Nous avons pris cette photo à l ' endroit - même où Van Gogh posa son chevalet . Il était fasciné par les tronc tordus des oliviers qui reflétaient son esprit toturé . Il était malade et se trouvait à sa demande à l ' hôpital psychiatrique de St rémy de Provence . Il pouvait circuler librement dans la campagne dominée par la chaîne des Alpilles . Ce tableau est célèbre .

The olive trees : we took this picture at the exact place where Van Gogh put his easel . He was fascinated by the twisted trunks of the olive trees which reflected his tortured mind . He was sick and asked to enter voluntarily the psychiatric hospital of St Remy de Provence . He might go freely to the countryside near the Alpilles Range . This painting looking like this picture is famous .

   Un petit champ de blé et de lavande . C ' est ce que voyait Vincent depuis sa chambre d ' hôpital . On sait combien les couleurs jaunes et les vagues du champs de blé ont inspiré beaucoup de ses peintures . De même pour le bleu de la lavande .

A small wheat field and lavender field . It was what Vincent saw from his room at the hospital . You know how much the yellow color and the waves of the wheat fields inspired many of his paintings . The same for the blue of the lavender .

Voici ces fameux champs de tournesols et ces cyprès qui inspièrent tant Van Gogh .

Comme je disais au début nous avons vécu dans une ambiance Van Gogh . On disait Van Gogh mais on pensait Vincent . Et peut - être était - il assis comme Janine à cette table en 1888 contemplant les arênes d ' Arles brillamment éclairées par un soleil brûlant ?

As I said at the beginning we lived in a Van Gogh ambiance . We said " Van Gogh " but we thought " Vincent " . And perhaps was he sat like Janine at this same table in 1888 looking at the amphitheater of Arles brightly lighted by a burning sun .
