    Besoin de ciel bleu

    Needing a blue sky

English version  below the French text below the first picture

    2013 temps gris 29 Janvier

our backyard and lawn on Tuesday January 26 ,2014

This photo of the yard and the lawn behind the house taken this Friday, Jan. 29 shows a gray sky , overcast, cloudy and no much  light . The cobbles are wet with some puddles. The air is filled with fine droplets that become small or large rain showers at any time of the day. It is this gloomy and wet landscape that we have, most of the time since the end of last September. No this is not the flood, not this is not a disaster, yes we can live in  but it's sad. And the long wet and cold cocoon becomes depressing and that is when we have an irrepressible desire of  blue sky and light. I don ' say no more but those who live in America under the same latitude should know the feelings that I express.

It is occurring while the golden memories of the few sunny days of summer or of the Mediterranean countries we visited. And come,  dreams of Venice, Provence in the South of France. This may seem extravagant is that people of the plains of  northern France or low hills of Normandy are adapting   and compensate sad climate and ambient monotony by a human heat can - be deeper , the taste of happy gatherings inside homes where laughter and songs make you forget weather. And Northerners  and Normandy will tell you that nothing is more beautiful than their homeland! Needed wisdom . Elementary, my dear Watson!

    Parfums et couleurs en Provence
    Scents and colors in Provence

I mentioned above blue sky dream and especially in Provence (in Southern France) and also  its perfumes and colors. This had a strong resonance for Zakiah who went three times in Provence and visited the town of Grasse, a town famous for its perfume factories. We went there too.  This has brought up memories of Provence. I have already written about these special colors that enchanted  us like Van Gogh, the painter.

We stayed a first time in Provence during a week in June 2006 exactly between the two towns where  the famous painter Vincent Van Gogh lived in 1888 and 1889 : Arles and Saint – Remy de Provence . ( about 15 km ) . The fist day of our stay we went to the Center Art Presence Van Gogh in St Remy and , there , all was so well explained with documents and a superb video than our stay was going to become a Van Gogh stay . He painted in Arles and in the country side around St Remy . All of things we could see and admire , he had painted them . We lived in his memory . Below some examples of landscapes that make us live with him.

Couleur vive !
    • Van Gogh made some paintings of cafes in Arles and also of the ” Yellow House ” where he lived . Bright color !

The olive trees : we took this picture at the exact place where Van Gogh put his easel . He was fascinated by the twisted trunks of the olive trees which reflected his tortured mind . He was sick and asked to enter voluntarily  the psychiatric hospital of St Remy de Provence . He might go freely  to the countryside near the Alpilles Range . This painting looking like this picture is famous .

A small wheat field and lavender field . It was what Vincent saw from his room at the hospital . You know how much the yellow color and the waves of the wheat fields inspired many of his paintings . The same for the blue of the lavender .

Here are those famous sunflowers fields and those Cypress trees that inspired so much Van Gogh .

As I said at the beginning we lived in a Van Gogh ambiance during that week in 2006. We said ” Van Gogh ” but we thought ” Vincent ” . And perhaps was he sat like Janine at this same table in 1888 looking at the Roman amphitheater of Arles brightly lighted by a burning sun .

  • The grey skys of winter are a bit depressing. But I'm holding out for an early spring!!

  • I do understand how gray skies are rather disheartening (& for some - it is very depressing)!
You and your wife are such a beautiful couple (both in looks, and more importantly in your souls)!
Eventually you will see some beautiful skies again... hopefully soon!
    Love,
    Carolyn

  • Beautiful photo's of you and your wife. Your wife is lovely.
House and yard look nice. I've said before... I envy your life. :-)

  • I cannot wait for summer. Even when we have blue skies here, it is too cold to really enjoy them.

  • I would love to visit Venice and Avignon someday. They say Provence is really distinctly Mediterranean.

    • In Provence the light, the air the scents are so special , we cannot describe them but we have to experience them.
And Venice is unique:painting, music, architecture and the sea everywhere ..

  • We have the same gray skies here often. I tell my grandsons, if we didn't have these gray skies, we will not be able to appreciate the blue skies. We had blue skies and hot weather all the time in India, but didn't care for it. We wanted fog and mist and rain, and longed to see snow. Now I know better!
I have been to Provence and many cities in France, and I loved each and every one. I love the two of you in both the pictures. You made such a handsome couple.
RYC: Michel, I loved your comment on my post about "COLORS". Thank you so much.

  • I love that last photo of you and Janine. Very wonderful-looking couple! :)

Interesting how the color of the sky can affect our moods so much. I, too, desire a bright blue sky.

    ~ Marica

  • Oh! You and Janine are so beautiful! :-)

Yes, the dark overcast clouds of Winter can be depressing for many people. Hopefully the bright blue sky, and sunny sun, of Spring will arrive soon! :-)

On the dark Winter days, remember the beautiful places you have traveled and smile! :-)

    Bright Bursting Warm HUGS!!! :-)

  • Your pics made me smile! Very nice! :)

  • No need to go south for light, you two have the light in your hearts.

  • Love the pictures of you and your sweet wife. It is depressing when the sun doesn't shine for so long. I've heard you can overcome it by having bright lights in your house. That costs money too. The sun has been shining the last few days but the cold is still here. I don't know which is worse, cold & rainy or really cold and sunshine? :-)

  • Well if you can't have real blue skies out your window you still have those pictures to bring back lovely memories.

We are hopeful as we head into a new month that rains will finally come. Our drought continues. Our weather fluxuates so much between freeze and warmer. No wonder my sinus and Wil's protest.

ryc:I thought like you a position I had cleaning files may have been at the source of the knee/leg pain. I've decided to carry the folders one at a time to a better sitting place. :-)

  • Hi, Michel. Turns out as I am reading your post, I notice that it finally rained!!! He have a horrible drought in progress.

I sure remember the gray skies of Michigan, USA. We were there 20 years.

Love your photos!! Made me feel good just looking at them.

  • it has been a cold winter in Texas this year--we are ready for a nice warm spring with some sunshine. I enjoyed the picture of you and your wife !

  • Such beautiful pictures....And very beautiful couple!! May your day be filled with Blessings!!

  • that's exactly how the skies are here in canada this time of year - very gray and gloomy! i'm anxious for summer again. :)

wonderful shot of you and your wife at the end.
i would love to go to venice someday!

  • Oh yes those dark, gray skies do make one feel blue and they are the same here.
I hate to complain about the weather here when others are waist deep in freezing, cold snow.
So nice to see the photos of you and your Mrs in the sunshine and Spring is not to far away.
Have a wonderful week end that got here way to quick.

  • Ty so very much for your comments on my sea hawk fan photos.

  • I am really looking forward to spring now, have you seen the flooding that is happening in part of the south of England , we are getting more storms tomorrow. I look forward to seeing photos of when spring returns to your lovely garden

  • RYC: Michel, I received your message about Grasse, and I replied to it. I don't know where it went though. I have been to Grasse several times and love the place. I have responded to your comment on my blog also.

  • Hope you are enjoying winter, Michel, we have been in California for a week and are now in Hawaii. It is warm and sunny here. I always love your pictures!

  • TY so very much of your comment on my photo of hubby in his sea hawks hat.

  • We are wishing for sunshine and warm temperatures too ~ soooo cold here and sooo much snow! But God is good ~ He gives us what is best for us ~ and we have warm homes and warm clothes and food to eat. Very thankful. Keep smiling ~ spring is coming soon, right?? :)

  • I always enjoy your pictures and your wife is just full of awesome such a beauty...

  • Michel ~ I am answering your question here as I am not sure you will see it on my site ~ My grandmother taught me the names of many bird when I was yet a child ~ and I have learned the rest over the years ~ but I always have a couple good bird books handy when I am away from our local area ~ that is the only way I can figure out what they are ~ :)

  • Beautiful pictures. Did you dance sur le point d"Avignon? You both look so young in that picture.

  • A wonderful reminiscence of your visit to the Van Gogh perspectives. I have always enjoyed and marveled at his painting! How wonderful that you visited and photographed (to share with Xanga)these historic and artistic spots!

  • Greetings Michel,
I tried to convince my daughter to visit Provence, and skip Paris, when she and her husband visited France... but they are young, and so of course, they wanted to see the Eiffel tower. My daughter concurred afterward... there was not much of pleasure in Paris... too many people and too touristy.

    Regarding your photo's;
I love the look of the olive trees. I wanted to buy some land in Spain with trees and landscape, that looked just like that.
I love the lavender hues too... that is the first thing I picked out in that photo. :-)
Love the last photo capture... What a rich, vibrant place France is, and all of Europe too. I love the ancient history and architecture. I often think if America were to be blown up, what of great interest would be lost... I think, not much. That is sad to me, that we so little of historic and artistic value, behind us.
Wishing you a pleasant week's end.
    Blessings,
    Lynn

  • Ugh... I so miss the edit feature for comments...
The other thing my daughter said about Paris that made her dislike it, is she said it was a dirty place.

and that last sentence in my comment above is supposed to say, 'that we leave so little of historic and artistic value...'

  • attempt of comment from Facebook. It's ok.

  • Lovely update photos and so bright with blue skies.

  • TY so very much for your comment on my photo post about my fav place to sot beside the river.
The stick fence is to keep the ducks from coming up into the garden of the gentleman who lives on the other side of the fence.

  • Michel I think grey skies are depressing, also. Glad that you have 2006 memories of sunshine and blue skies that can make you smile. I am on WordPress but have been unable to find you. So very happy that you have posted it here on FB..

  • Ah oui. Super!

  • Wonderful pictures and memories.

The first photograph made me smile as I like these kinds of days - especially when they can be spent inside with a hot cup of tea and a good book.

    Thank you.

  • Salut Michel!

  • more and more photos
I like all of them and you and your pretty wife, too

  • Lovely photos! I think if I spent more time here reading your French I would remember what I have forgotten from my first course.

  • Enjoyed your post. We've had mostly grey dark skies all winter, but no snow until this past Tuesday. Mother Nature dumped 4 inches of snow on top of freezing rain. Jan 31 was sunny, but snow remained. We have had a very strange winter this season, and lack of moisture will surely bring about a drought season this summer/fall. So patiently waiting for the sun and breezes of a sunny and much warmer March. We who live in the northern parts of this world are blessed to experience the changing seasons. Life is good. ♥ Marilyn

  • Michel, what a lovely post. I love the photos of you and Janine. Such a gorgeous couple. I love seeing your smiling faces. I will get over here with a new blog soon. Hopefully tomorrow. Merci!

  • I love trees as Vincent did, but I could not paint one.

ryc: Dear Michel the lady with the heart was not drawn by me. That is why you see a copyright for the artist that did her and the pup. I do the placing of them with my name.

  • Michel, these are beautiful pictures, and what wonderful memories! We are deep in snow here and Ken must go out and do some shoveling or blowing the snow almost every day. Very few sunny days here, too, which makes me depressed. When the sun does shine, it is bitterly cold. The average temperature for the month of January in our area of Wisconsin was only 9 degrees farenheit.

  • Oh Michel, how profoundly delicious to see the pictures and read your memories. I loved seeing them. I did go to St. Remy also, but forgot to tell you about that in my response to your comment. I have left a detailed response on my blog about your comment. Thank you for these beautiful pictures. Love, Zakiah.

  • TY so very much for your comment on my photo of Ali watching TD.

  • I love the rows of lavender. I think we are all aching for warmth and sunshine now.

  • We have such fond memories of our four days of rainy weather in Paris, in April. It was cold and gray but the trees were in full splendor with their huge pink blossoms. Here we cherish the rare overcast day but weary of it quickly if it ever lasts more than a few days. If I had a bigger house, I would insist that you come to visit because February is spectacular in Southern California.

  • Absolutely beautiful and your pictures so capture the earth and spirit there! {v}

  • Ty so very much for your comments on my Sea hawk posts.
If they do not win we will have had a wonderful family get together in their honor.
Have a good week coming up way to fast.

  • Soon you will look outside and notice once again that the sky is blue..... As if anew the discovery will be a pleasant surprise..... The beautiful thing about the weather is.....it changes.

    • This is a very good philosophy,GC: to be able to appreciate the unceasing changes of colors that the weather gives us . I am sure you will find again soon your paintbrushes!

  • Testing

  • Yes, I can finally leave a comment!

Beautiful pictures, Michel. I see where Van Gogh drew his inspiration from.

The song "Starry Starry Night" comes to mind as I view this blog post.

(Please ignore my previous comment. I was testing the system.)

    Respectueusement.

  • Beautiful pictures, scenes, and couple. Love looking at the area that Van Gogh was and see things he painted in the now.

  • Ty so very much for your comment about my super bowl post, groun dhog and TD doing better today.
Sea Hawks won and what a wonderful game it was.

  • Ty for your comment only first post since my other posts are all gone.
It has been a strange day and I am happy my account is still open on word press.
Yes happy at my house as the Sea Hawks won by a land slide.
    have a wonderful week.

  • Mornin Glorie....this reminded me of the old song "Put On a Happy Face", Tony Bennett sang it, my favorite line in the song was:

I knew a girl so gloomy
    She'd never laugh or sing
    She wouldn't listen to me
Now she's a mean old thing

this is a link to the song:

I hope Vincent was happy as you and Janine!

  • Happy Monday, Michel!
And HUGS for you and Janine!
    :-) :-) :-) :-)

  • Ty for your comment on post about anger and I have all of my photos that were deleted in my word press blog on a flash drive so I still have all of them.
    Ty for the suggestion Michel.

  • Lovely pictures as always, Michel. And I do hope the sunny skies will return to your area soon. And if not, you are wise to travel to where you can find them!

How awesome it is to have seen the place where Van Gogh lived. So much history to be shared!!

Best wishes to you and Janine! Cheers!

  • I loved seeing those pictures. What a treasured experience! Thank you for sharing it with us.

  • RE: Your comments on my site --
Yes, Michel, the change in weather this week is for the better!
Thank you for your sweet comments about my grand”babies” … they
truly “wrap themselves around my heart”!
The picture touched me as much as the quote, I think!
I am so glad that you and Janine liked the card. You two are very special!
    Love,
    Carolyn

  • You followed the footsteps of the famous artist!! I saw a movie about him and the yellow house. It showed the easel in the field.
Oh the weather can bring us down but when we have a good old black and white movie to watch we forget about the outside being gloomy. Spring will soon be here!!! Tomorrow is March!

  • The lavender is the color of Elizabeth Taylor's eyes..blue/purple...so amazing and beautiful. To walk and sit and see the places the great artist walked and sat and saw is a gift in and of itself. You live wonderfully and beautifully! Janine is by your side, a true beauty both inside and out! You are blessed!

  • Beautiful photos, I enjoyed the trip. Janine is so beautiful and youthful, how can she be mom of 6 and grandmother to many?! =) You too of course. ;)
