The hamlet where we were a bit lost.
Last September we were in a hamlet in Normandy at the middle of meadows, forests and a lot of small roads going in all directions around the woods and pastures. To be clear, we were lost and fortunately we found a plaque indicating the directions for the next surrounding villages. This small blue cast iron plate was set up on the wall of an old house at a road crossing. That was an old nameplate. I remember when I 'was young in the 1940s all the directional plates were made on this model and fixed in the height

Towards the open market Painting by Michel Fauquet 1948. The explanation is that at that time there were almost no cars but carriages pulled by horse and the plates were installed at the level of the carriage driver. Happy period! We had time to stop and look carefully at the name plate and if it was night you lighted it with a pocket lamp. No car behind to sound nervously its horn at you : Peaceful:. When I saw this old plate I confess I was full of nostalgia.
Nowadays you have have a multitude of signs like the ones above and you can not slow down enough to see them. You have just enough time to see that there were signs and you ask your wife what they stated. She had no time to read the all of them ! Ah! stress! I had taken a wrong direction. And then if you add the advertising boards , the hell!
Of course we can meet other kind of signs but this is another story.___________________________________

2 Panneaux douteux et….GPS
Dubious signs and…..GPSEnglish version below the pictures
Bizarre !
Click on to enlarge ,if you want. Cliquer dessus pour agrandir , si vous voulez.
In exploring the streets of a small town in Normandy I noticed a open door allowing to enter a kind of white ceramic tiled room.
Inside there was another door and at the side was hung a beautiful plaque in earthenware. I took a picture of it because I was rather stunned.
Here is above the photo of this plaque. The translation is ; "Toilets . Limited to 5 minutes use... Reading tolerated”. I do not think I have to add more.
Is not this sign shocking ? Ce panneau n' est- il pas choquant ?
I was walking on a promenade at the side of a canal somewhere in France in June 2006 .
Suddenly I saw this unusual sign (picture above ) . I found it funny . What citizen would allow his dog to do this on the promenade ?
It ' s degusting and also dangerous ! You may slip on it and fall in the canal !
Lost in the fields in front of a pile of fresh manure !!!
Some readers praised the GPS like a beautiful invention , much better than the rad signs . but listen to this :
Three years ago my wife and I were going to our daughter Carole 's ( the duchess) , in a village lost in the hills of the province of Artois-Boulonnais ( northen France),. I was not sure of the directions with this lot of little roads , with not too much road signs .So I used my precious GPS . Once it told me ( a GPS speaks!!! ). Turn on the right.. So, at the first cross road I turn on the right despite of the dires of my wife saying it was not the good road . Indeed it was a small road a kind of dirt trail winding and climbing in the fields .It became narrower and narrower ! I started to worry at the middle of the fields. All of a sudden the GPS tells me triumphantly " you are arrived " !!! I had the eyes wide open and what did I see in front of me ? A big pile of fresh manure . Yes I was done . Ah! If I had taken care of what my wife was saying . Of course "Turn on the right", yes but on a road not a farming trail!! This shows the GPS is really precious but you must not obey in a blind way and keep your critical sense .
And in general we have to trust and have faith but while exercising the intelligence of an open mind that was given to us

yes, I have to be able to read them here in the U.S.A,too.
give us a break.
I love your painting!
Pennsylvania, the state next to mine, has such a lack of road signs in one area where my college had been. I got lost one night, driving an hour north of where I was supposed to be turning south! So scary, especially when alone and it was raining.
I imagine you, Marica, lost at night in the rain without road signs . What a panic!
Well one thing for sure, there is no lack of road signs here in our state....
Your pictures are beautiful, especially the painting....
enjoyed your post ~ getting lost is no picnic!
Hey Michel, I am sorry for taking such a long break, I am trying to get outside more. I do have some photos to post, I have missed Xanga so much, I do not know my way around this new one yet but I hope to get that straightened out! <3
The automobile is the bane of mankind. Oh, how I long for a quiet place where only bicycles and horses use the roads.
Your post struck a chord with me.
It's good to have a GPS device to find your way. No matter which direction you turn, it'll tell you the right way to go.

Yes the GPS is a precious tool but take care to keep your critical sense . i got some surprises.
I love the art work! There are reminders of days gone by if we but look for them!
I can't read road signs here either. Of course, my eyes are not very good. I really like your painting. How old were you when you painted it? I was 10 in 1948.
There are some signs here which are useful like that, saying one town is in one direction and one is in another. I found it helpful when I first moved here and was not sure how to get places (and would often go exploring). But there are also many intersections where the street sign is hidden and you cannot read it until you are in the middle of the road (especially if you have bad eyes like me!). And people here are very impatient and the traffic is terrible.
I suppose it helps that you have someone in the car to read signs for you!
Oh! I love your painting, Michel!!!
How old were you when you painted it? Do you still paint?
Getting lost is no fun!
I appreciate road signs! And I love having a GPS to use! and I like talking back to the nice lady on the GPS who gives directions!
HUGS!!!
When we moved to Denmark, we had to learn a whole new way of looking for signs! You just never know where they will be located! I am thankful for the GPS!
I love the arrows on the old metal sign, they tell you in an instant which way to go, no they don't make signs like that anymore. We had a festival in our town a couple of weeks ago, they had hay rides that went through town and a history person to tell the riders about the historic places along the way. I was very disturbed how the too busy people in their cars acted toward the wagon and mules. People are in such a hurry anymore that they miss the nostalgia of everyday life...it makes me wonder what they will remember when they are older, your painting reminded me of the wagon the mules were pulling...ilym
These ancient directional signs were sometimes installed on top of a pole when crossing roads was in open countryside surrounded by fields and pastures. They were not only useful for travelers but also for locals to indicate a place with much precision like a geodetic sign
Thank you for answering my question about your painting! You did an amazing job for a teenager! Wow! Do you still paint now?!

Oh, and thank you for the smiley face you left me!
HUGS and hope your day is going great!!!
I do love the painting you did, Michal. It shows you have a lot of talent. I know what you mean about trying to read signs. I have that problem here when we go someplace. I do the navigating and my husband does the driving. Sometimes I miss the signs, however the GPS does help now days.
I appreciate your comment...It has been a busy time here with company, traveling and getting some remodeling work done in our kitchen.
I love the painting Michel. Such a good hand at such a young age! We had horse drawn carriages at home, just like that.
Great post.
Well Michel I followed your link and as you can see I got here OK. A puzzle as this is the same link I was on yesterday. Think xanga may have had a glitch.
I hate missing the road I'm trying to find. Honey does it all the time and we end up finding different ways to get there! Love the painting. Sometimes I am nostalgic too about the days gone by. Are people happier when they don't care about things like that?
I answered your comment in a couple of replies on my post ~ wish there was a way they would let us know when someone replies!
I love the greens in the first photo.
I like traveling around and seeing old road signs. They give character to the area they are placed in. It is also nice to know why the are set at the different heights and such.
hahahahaha...that is so funny! I don't have a cell phone or a GPS, but when my girls travel with me we use theirs. In August while my daughter and I were driving to Texas daughter decided she wanted a coffee from Starbucks while we were passing through Memphis Tennessee, the GPS took us first to St. Judes Research Hospital, She didn't want to go to the hospital so she asked for another location and the GPS took us right down town to Beale Street, the birthplace of the Blues! What a surprise we had, she got her coffee and I got to listen to wonderful music ... Have a wonderful weekend, the moon is full tonight and there will be a minor eclipse and the Orionids meteor shower on the 21st. ilym
The GPS sometimes has good ideas . Probablyyour daghter's one loved caring people having the blue with a good cafe.!!
GPS spshhhhhh
One must use a little sense, forged from experience and be willing to take risks, and explore, make the voyage an adventure.
Knowing where we are going, following the road signs and trails laid before us is only a small portion of the journey. Getting lost and found again, that my friend is the real reason for the trip.
What wonders were discovered by those who knew not where they were heading, but rather only that they were heading off in a general direction. The French explorers of the Canadian wilderness, the Spaniards heading west across the vast ocean heading for India, discovering a new world, The Englishmen who traversed to the center of Antarctica, and even now the many nationals aboard the International Space Station, these are the happy wanderers.
I have taken many side roads in getting from one place to another never really knowing if the way was right or left, but only trusting that eventually I would find my way and have been rewarded many times with majestic vistas, incredible discoveries of small communities, intriguing architecture or awe inspiring landscapes. No, it is not the destination that satisfies the man but the journey.
I like this comment so enthousiast for the journey-discovery. I love also this kind of adventure and I like exploring
little streets in the towns, small villages and also using anonymous trails to know what I will find around
But nowadays the hour of departure and the hour of arrival are determined and most of the time you have just time to make the travel
when someone is waiting for you at the end..
We have some GPS stories to tell as well. My husband loves trying to get her mixed up when he already knows where he's going. I like your application.
I like your artwork... you are genius!
Gps's can be a blessing.and not so much. My gps worked for a while and then it started telling me to turn where ther was a dead end and such.
Your gps detour sounds scenic at least
Wonderful pictures!
I need that dog sign for my yard
My wife normally drives and it is up to me to read the road signs. Sadly, I am slow reading, noticing, and absorbing the data. Very frustrating.
I sure love the places you visit, Michel. Wonderful, historic and beautiful.
We seen dog signs here that are similar, but usually small.
blessings
frank
Here we have to update the GPS every year or two. There are dire consequences such as yours if you do not update it. With the new SMART phones it is much easier.
Yes Zakiah we akways are running behind the technical evolutions: maps , compas, road signs, GpS and now smart phone .
I do not forget what I promised in my latest e.mail
my comment is gone!
ryc: about a child's soul... I know what you mean/
Michel, go to Appearance, Customize, then on the drop down menu of Column Layout, choose Two Column (main column on right) and SAVE ~ then back out of there ~ go to Appearance, WIDGETS and slide the ones you desire in your sidebar to the column that says Sidebar 1 ~ slide the one OUT of Sidebar 1 that you do not wish to be be there. Keep trying ~ you will get it!
Our GPS has lead us to crazy places The last time we were just out for a drive and we were following her directions and she said turn right so we did it said drive 6 miles then turn right about 3 miles in we were on a ice patch of land the went right off into the lake
It just goes to prove the the new ways are not always the better ways! You are correct, everything these days seems rushed and there is little time when one is driving a car to read all the signs with care.
I love that dog sign, though! Too funny!!
Hope you are well, Michel! Cheers!!
I am so sorry you are unable to get a sidebar in. When I have a problem, I contact them at help@xanga.net ~ I hope they will be willing to help you. Sometimes, they can just change a setting and fix whatever is wrong.
A question ~ when you are in Appearance, then Column Layout, and you choose 2 columns, did you SAVE up at the top afterwards? Then you have to get clear out of that section ~ back to Appearance, then Widgets ~ not under Customize. Wasn't sure if I made myself clear.
Blessings to you ~ get some rest!
I hope and trust that Xanga will respond to your plea ~ I wrote to them on your behalf also ~ surely something will happen soon. Have a restful day now ~
Michel ~ I heard back from Xanga ~ they said they would look at your site to see if there is some reason why you cannot get a sidebar ~ hopefully, they will be able to help ~
YES! They DID it! So happy for you that your site is more like you want it now ~ yeehaw!
Better to recheck the direction, especially when your wife says so.
Amiti&
Carlo
. Mes chaussures en auraient long à raconter...
Hello Bonjour Michel from Marjorie Busby's 2 daughter in Adelaide South Australia. I googled your name as I remember mum considered you a lovely French friend. I remember her showing me a photo of you wiyh your lovely family, all young adults. She gave me a Xmas card you sent in about 2008 as I liked it and it now hangs in a frame here. We live near the beach at Heley SA. I do not know if you know Marje was taken (bodysnatched)? to live in Tasmania by her 1st daughter Ms Angela Poynter who very soon put her in an aged care facility where she now resides in one room and thankfully sleeps happily most of the day. I write to her once a week and phone her long distance also once a week and we happily chat for about 40 minutes. Mostly I take her back to our childhood ( as we were a family estranged and not re connected until I found her and Dad again in 2007) She loves that I remember her father well and many other things that Ms P cannot remember or bother to chat to mum about. Anyway , now you know she is well and happy enough and has also my brother Nicholas in touch with her and my sister (3 rd daughter) also from Adelaide who has some contact with her. I will let her know I have found you and update her re your life in France. My husband and I spent 5 weeks there in France in May and June 2013 !! More later I do not like the computer much and am still learning. Also non parlee France Pardon Monsuier Kind regards Gillian from Australia.x
