  • 80th birthday,in climbing the stairs/the staircase

    En montant l' escalier j'atteins 80 ans aujourd'hui!

In climbing the stairs I hit my 80th birthday, today!

    English version below the pictures

The staircase reaching the second floor

       Allez Michel!

But ,this morning , the meteo forced me to schovel then to salt

the back yard , the driveway and the sidewalk.I have rarely seen a such amount of snow in Amiens ( Picardy, France )
Did not ever tell you " the heart does not age ? "
     Go, Michel!

Afterwards I enjoyed a excellent meal prepared by my sweet Janine . But here I am unable to translate in English because a French meal is only said in French .Please read above . I can only say it was tasteful and the drinks started by a wine with bubbles from Jura (Arbois 1998) since PuisseguinSt Emilion and at last after coffee some drops of Cassis de Dijon.

    L’ escalier

    The staircase

    English version below the picture

    Escalier 2013

    L ' escalier . The staircase.

Many people coming at our home are admiring, not me,  but the ...stairs ! . They say that this staircase has a particular style (it was built like the house around 1930)..It seems for them rather original and it  is made entirely with wood with a warm color. In addition you wonder how it stands from the ground floor up to the second floor since there is no pillar. A professional carpenter once came here and told us that it 'was a good job. It explained the mounting system but we have forgotten.....

My personal  office is at the first floor, so I'm often on the stairs. There are 20 steps from the ground floor up to the first floor and as much  to reach the second floor. There are times when I need to take my breath now and I am slower than before . It is a bit like the stair of life, step by step, year after year.

    .

  • The stair case does look like as if they were made in the 1930's. That is so beautiful. :sunny:

  • Beautiful workmanship and what a great addition to the ambiance of the home.

  • Gorgeous staircase! Do you know what kind of wood was used?

In English-speaking countries usually the ground floor is called the first floor, and then you go upstairs to the second and third floors.

  • Oh, it is gorgeous! I do understand about the stairs getting harder and harder. I'm glad we can take the time to do them more slowly when we get older and don't have to hurry.

  • I love the look of that staircase, especially the red colour! I can understand that climbing the stairs takes more energy as we get older, a problem I also face (also I need to be in better shape).

    Cheers, my friend!

  • @Roadkill_Spatula - Only if the home is anything other than a split-level home....Then it would be known as the basement, or ground floor, and the first floor would be on the second level, and called first floor....The third floor of a split-level would be called the second floor.....

  • It's beautiful!! Those stairs look like they are made from ceder wood...Very strong wood....

  • @ellie1945 - "That's true! I haven't been around split levels in a long time.

  • Beautiful stairwell, beautiful runner on the steps, and over all I love the home you live in Michel. I have seen such warm pictures of it. Thank you for sharing them.

  • I agree beautiful stairs---but some times I have trouble climbing stair any more. Thank you for dropping by my site. I always enjoy your visits !

  • It's a beautiful staircase, Michel!

  • The staircase is beautiful, Michel. I got your note and sent you one back, but thought I would come on into the library and check out Xanga. I have not left Xanga. Up until today, I would have said that things are very tight in our household and extra trips into town just don't happen anymore. However, today I have good news. One of my clients will be back on schedule soon. This will bring me back up to what I need as far as income goes. Also yesterday, Susannah and I were out looking for property to have a business. We found a little place for sale. It used to be an ice cream shop from the looks of it, but we could turn it into a tiny cafe/bakery with hardly any trouble at all. I am not going to say we are going to do it, but I would like to try. I do not know yet what they are asking for this property. I will look today while I am here at the library.
Please know, I would always tell you if I was going to be gone from Xanga. You have been a great friend to me. As I said in my note I have sent off a card to you. I just hope you get it in time.
    Many (((Hugs))) In friendship, Rachel

  • @Aslans_daughter - Hi, I was happy to read your note to Michel. I was just wondering about you yesterday.

  • What a beautiful home you have  your staircase reminds me of the one in Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe, New Mexico. here is a link if you wish "http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/bl_mysterious_staircase15.htm" :lookaround: it's very interesting that the wood at Loretto and yours are very similar and that some think the wood was imported from France, possibly even built in France and shipped :sunny: Yes, it is like the stairs of life, step by step, we must keep moving toward our destination, even though our breathing becomes labored :spinning: ilym :heartbeat: :heartbeat: :heartbeat:

  • " Many people coming at our home are admiring, not me, but the ...stairs !

The upper portion does seem to be hanging there as if by magic! I also like the illusion of the staircase seeming to be on the level, and the doorway on the right askew. You have come to a time in your life to slow down, maybe it makes you appreciate the beauty of the wood even more?

  • Climbing stairs is supposed to be some of the best exercise.

  • You could just google the legend of Loretto Chapel, it is very interesting  and your smileys worked fine, I love the emoticons :fun: :heartbeat: :heartbeat: :heartbeat:

  • Beautiful staircase!!!

  • so very beautiful ~

  • Your house looks like a museum! Very very beautiful!

  • Those are awesome! :)

  • It is a beautiful staircase...and life is like that. Thanks for sharing.

  • wow that is really interesting!

  • That is some really nice woodwork! I am not a fan of taking the stairs but those look very nice. The color of the wood reminds me of the log cabin I stayed at in Maine, although it was not quite so red as this.

  • It's beautiful. Make climbing stairs a pleasure.

  • Lovely craftsmanship! It is too bad that there aren't any carpenters around that are willing and skilled enough to do this... I'd love a staircase like that!

  • Beautiful staircase! And I love the carpet on it. Very nice.

  • It looks like oak or red oak was used.
That wood will last for a very long time (oak).

The beam across the ground floor carries the center load by the braces.
the load is not so huge because the cross joist are taking some of it too.

I never saw that exact technique.

  • It is a very lovely staircase... Shame so many homes these days don't have that custom attention to detail.

  •  Answer to  eshunt@revelife above :your technical explanation about the "staircase is very interesting and probably exact  but this model of explanation of the  interactiion of the  mechanical forces certainly should be completed.. Thanks for this first explanation.

  • That is a beautiful staircase, very classy like yourself<:)

  • :heartbeat: :heartbeat: It is so nice to see glimpses into your life, and this is a great one. Everything about you....your wife, house, children, grandchildren, and especially you are CLASSY! So it is this staircase. It is classy and beautiful, plus built well.

Some day I hope to see you in person and climb that staircase and be out of breath as well! I, too, know the feeling of slowing down. Much as I hate to admit it, it is happening also to me! LOL

  • Love those old staircases! Beautiful. I think it's good for our health too. They have stair steppers at those exercise clubs but it's more fun to actually go up an down real stairways!

  • I can't imagine living for long in a house with some beautiful woodwork. Your staircase is wonderful; a great design and beautifully warm colour. Thanks for the picture.

  • I love the wood and wonder if it might be cherry. Dad had trees he sold for the making of ax handles and such, and it was cherry and a reddish tint. I saved a chunk laying on the ground and even varnished it to preserve it.

With my back now stairs would be very painful. Heck with my knees they would kick in too so I would be left on the ground floor.

It looks like you have a third floor.

  • Quite beautiful.  And a brilliant accomplishment by the designer.

  • @Maiie -  :yes:oui! merci pour le lien! :goodjob:

  • Amazing work of craftsmanship. Reminds me of a " Stairway to heaven"
You don't need to count the steps any more, you know them by heart by now.

  • @mlbncsga -

    You're welcome!

  • wow so beautiful reminds me of the b&b i stayed in in juno alaska and also of my friends home in berne, swizerland.  i love the dark wood.

  • wow so beautiful reminds me of the b&b i stayed in in juno alaska and also of my friends home in berne, swizerland.  i love the dark wood.

  • Ty so very much fo ryour comment on my post about TD being home and have a wonderful week end.

  • RYC: I Think Arras has similar architecture as Bruges. No beer in the channels of Bruge and it doesn't look like Venice at all. it takes more than some water to be Venice.
Bruges has a lot of history. I don't know if they make lace, they do sell it to tourists, but I've no idea how they make it, industrial most probably.

  • It's beautiful. You have a lovely home, Michel.

  • The staircase reminds me of the ones I would see in some houses when I was a child. Yours is a beautiful one, too. I have been away the previous weekend of Mar. 1-4, so I'm just now catching up on friends' posts. ~~Blessings & Cheers

  • That is magnificant craftmanship!

  • I'm doing better, thanks for asking.

Besides the impressive workmanship they must help keep you healthy.  Keep climbing!

  • Greetings! I'm back. Those stairs are absolutely beautiful! :goodjob: I am an admirer of woodwork. I was surprised to find out that i hadn't blogged since July of last year. I have missed my friends from Xanga, and my blogging, and as I am looking forward to retiring from teaching this June, I decided to begin blogging again. I often think of you, and the wonderful stories and pictures that you have shared. You are the 2nd Xanga friend I have visited since posting today. I hope all is well with you and yours.

  • Beautiful stairs indeed, but oh such a long climb.   Slow and steady as you go and you will make it.

  • Oh, my, what a fabulous staircase! So sturdy, yet offset by the "floatiness"...very nice!

I like the light fixture I can see, as well.

I understand about steps. I live in a bi-level, so must choose steps up or down as soon as I step away from the landing inside. I try to make every trip up and down count! Scout the area I am leaving to see if anything needs transported first, to save myself a trip later!

  • Good Morning Michel and the trees in my last post about going to the thyroid Dr and my walk beneath the trees, are pine trees.

  • they're beautiful.

i really hate running up and down my stairs all day but tell myself it's a form of exercise so that helps a bit. ;)

  • You are right that the stairs have a wonderful glow , a stair way to heaven or your piece of heaven away in your office

  • Joyeux anniversaire Michel!!!

  • Bon anniversaire! :fun:

Merci beaucoup.

  • It is a beautiful staircase inside a home that looks just as beautiful. I haven't been on your blog in a very long time (I haven't been on Xanga for quite some time), so I hope you still remember me. I particularly enjoy struggling to understand the French on your blog, and today was a day of triumph for me because I understood nearly 90% of the French. This was, of course, after reading and re-reading every sentence and racking my brains to recover as much of my high school French as I could. Thank you for this wonderful post.

  • Oh my goodness Michel, those nasty gulls sound like they have been decorating your car.  I can send you a lot more if you would like them<:)

  • Firstly
HAPPY BIRTHDAY Michel. Many happy returns of the day to you. May today be a day blessed with many happy happenings and memorable moments & events!! :sunny:

I just love looking at your staircase and it has such a beautiful rich color too. Amazing though how it stands without a pillar.

  • That is a beautiful piece of true craftmanship. And...GOOD FOR YOU!. Climbing steps is a great exercise. Between your step climbing and your gardening, you will continue to be young for a long time yet.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY! I am going to email you a birthday card.

I will be writing a protected posting about our son. He is fine and happy now.

    Love,
    votre amie,
    Francoise

  • My dear friend, life has been so much busier than when I was active on xanga! I sure miss those days! I'm very happy to see that you turn 80 today. Many happy returns, my French grandfather!

    With love,
    the Singapore Girl, Catherine

  • Hey Michel!! Wishing you a very happy 80th birthday today, and many more to come!! Have a wonderful celebration, my friend! Cheers and best wishes!!

  • Happy Birthday Mornin Glorie...have a wonderful day and thank you for being you! :sunny: :heartbeat: :sunny: ilym

p.s. I have borrowed another photograph of you for my blog, please let me know if this is not agreeable with you :lookaround:

  • Happy birthday!  And congratulations on reaching 80 years!!!

  • Happy Birthday my friend!! And if I'm late in the greeting forgive me...I pray your day is Blessed, or was Blessed.....

  • Happy Birthday! I hope you had an exciting birthday. You seem to live in an extremely beautiful house with beautiful surroundings. The snow in particular looks delightful to me. In one of the pictures it looks like a large puff of cotton. It does not snow where I live. In fact I have seen real snow only once in my entire life, when I was ten. I hardly remember it. I had tried, unsuccessfully, to make a snowman, but there just wasn't enough snow for that. What I see in your picture is copious amounts of snow and I'm jealous! Maybe some day I will also live in a beautiful neighborhood like that.

Thank you for stopping by my blog today. I was very happy to see your comment. Once again, happy birthday. In French I believe one would say "Bonne Anniversaire!" (Forgive me if I got it wrong!)

  • Amazing looking stairs, hope with each new year you are still enjoying the climb up even if it does take you a bit more time.

  • Happy birthday,Michel. 80 is a big number, as xanga says trying to sell us premium.
The snow is like sugar on the birthday cake, special for you.
French meal is an appropriate name for such great food.

  • Happy Birthday, Michel! I hope if I make it to 80, I'll be in as good shape as you are. I hope you have an excellent birthday.

  • Happy Birthday to you Michel! Only a few short years ago you were 70...I remember 10 years ago. You have a beautiful home. Take it easy with the shoveling please. I look forward to seeing your 90th birthday post!!! :sunny:

  • Happy Birthday, Michel! I hope you had a blessed day today. I love your staircase, but I would hate to climb it everyday. I am very slow at climbing, too. Take care with the shoveling, especially if the snow is heavy.

  • You just get better and better!! Happy birthday dear friend!! :heartbeat: :heartbeat:

  • Happy Birthday mon ami!!

  • HAPPY HAPPY  BIRTHDAY  my friend. And I hope you have many more !!

  • So very true. "The heart does not age." Very interesting architecture, not just the stairs themselves but ceiling where the light fixture hangs from.

  • Happy Birthday Michel!!

  • That is a beautiful staircase! It does look very unique with all of that lovely wood, even the underneath looks good. And so much snow! We've only had that much here in Ohio a couple of times this winter.
Wishing you a Very Happy Birthday and a wonderful day filled with everything good.

  • A VERY happy 80th birthday to you, Michel!! :heartbeat: Wow, so much snow, but it still looks wonderful to me. I love your staircase! It's quite elegant.

  • The staircase is beautiful, Michel...I wish you a very Happy Birthday.  You certainly did have a lot of snow.  It looks like it might have been a bit heavy.  You are in good condition to be able to shovel all of that.

Your meal sounds wonderful.  I do not speak french but I do  recognize the names of foods.  I am a foodie!  I know chocolate in any language!

  • A very blessed and Happy Birthday Michel.    80 years old?  You do not look it my friend.

There you are out shoveling the snow and salting-hard work for a man of any age.

You go Michel and you totally rock!!

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY MICHEL! :goodjob: :giggle:  :heartbeat:SOOO HAPPY FOR YOU! 80TH BDAY! i've been meaning to write u a birthday ecard but i've had no time! sorry! :whocares: i'm still trying to get our new apt cleaned and organized... :nono:but i'm not very successful. i am sooo happy that you had a wonderful birthday! was thinking of u and wishing u the happiest of days! :love:with lots of love! :heartbeat:  good night cher michel and sweet dreams! :goodjob:  :sleepy:

  • CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR 80TH BIRTHDAY MICHEL!
You should go to my blog and see my wishes for you there.
It seems like you all got about 7 to 9 inches of snow. Be careful when you shovel. Hopefully our snow is all done for the season.

Enjoy the year and life dear friend.

    Zakiah.

  • Happy, Happy Birthday, Michel!!!

  • Michel, Bon anniversaire!

  • Happy Birthday Michel! I realize it has passed at your home. It is still the day here. France is always in the future. Those stairs have the constant of yesterday and on the way too every day. Much love and health to you on your birthday, young man! xxoo Cheers! (I'd post a mini but nothing seems to be working on xanga this evening. It took my hours to get over here and post this!)

  • Well Happy Birthday Michel! I thought we were the same age, guess not. It is our years married the same. :) I could not shovel any snow let alone the amount you do!

  • Oh, Happy Birthday, Michel!! I am glad you had a great celebration and I wish you many many more!

  • Bravo pour le déneigement! Et félicitations pour tes 80 ans !

  • I thought that you would get lots of snow on your birthday when I saw the news yesterday. It was really bad in the Channel Islands as well. Your garden will be very slow this spring. Mum has got through her operation yesterday and is now recovering

  • happy birthday sweet man

  • " the heart does not age " Coincidence. That's exactly what I was thinking when I saw your pictures.

  • Happy birthday!

  • Congratulations, and many happy returns!

  • Hello Miche, I need to share my Joy with you, Pope Francesco, he s a POPE FOR THE CHURCH BUT FORMOST for the people. I am deeply moved and overjoyed.

  • Happy 80th birthday, Michel!

    RYC: I'm still in Singapore.

  • I ead all of your comments and wondered how much time you spend in answering these.  I know from reading your past comments that you answer every one.  Perhaps this is why you need an office since this is a job!!

I am checking in so you won't wonder if I am okay. If I did not have housekeepers coming in four days a week, I would not be doing well. On Sunday I was not able to think well and did not acknowledge this. Thus I awakened to arise and had no strength in my legs. The entire day was spent just being able to stand. I will write on my site as you suggested. It is with His blessing that I did not hurt myself . At one point I fell heavily and came to an end at a large basket filled with clothes. That was a very large blessing for I might have broken my hip aggain.

Dear friend, you are one of  my major blessings. May we have years left to be corresponding.

    I almost forgot....HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MICHEL!!!

My most precious love, my friend!

    Love always,

    Bev

  • First of all, happy birthday! You certainly did good work on that sidewalk shoveling the snow! Was that Mother Nature's birthday present to you? ;)

Second, I love seeing pictures of your home! It is so pretty, and it looks very large. It sounds as though you and Janine are very happy and snug there.

I don't have any marvelous wines here, so I will lift a glass of Diet Coke to you in celebration! Cheers!

  • Happy 80th Birthday... what a joy you are still healthy enough to do all the things you love. Many more to you.

  • ryc: Gosh Michel, my mistake we married in 1960. Don't know why I thought that was the year you married.

  • Oh, MY! I MISSED THE BIRTHDAY PART! Happy Birthday, dear, dear Michel! 80 years YOUNG! Big hugs and many kisses from Virginia, USA! I love my friend and celebrate his milestone birthday!

WOO HOO! :heartbeat: :sunny:  :fun:   :goodjob: :giggle:   :heartbeat:

  • Amazing...that's you!  You are not only young at heart but full of the vitality and youthful vigor of someone who have lived far less years!  Keep it up.  We want you here and healthy for  a long time!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY...again.  and again.  Can never wish you too many happy birthdays!)

BTW:  I did just write a "protected " posting.  You and Marion are the only ones who are able to read)

  • Wow, you are looking and doing great for 80!! My father was in poor health for a long time before he died at age 81. Keep on marching up the stairs for good health! :)

  • Happy birthday! What a lovely place. :heartbeat:
I hope you keep yourself warm from all those snow.

  • Belated birthday wishes!

  • Happy Birthday Michel! You don't look, or act, a day past 55! (Sorry the wishes are belated, i was away for a couple of days)

  • By this time, you are well into the 8th decade of your life.
I came over this time to thank you for being an understanding and true friend.

    Love,
    votre amie,
    Francoise.

  • TY so very much for your kind and supportive comments Michel>:)

  • Beautiful staircase. I find that because I do not have stairs in my own flat, when I do have to climb up a lot of stairs I am very out of practise.

  • It looks like you were hard at work with all that snow on your birthday, Michel, but I hope you had a most wonderous day and that you had no trouble with those stairs! Wendy and I have sent you a card in the mail. Bonne Anniversaire!!

  • I got here from Google+, and I am pleased I did. A belated happy 80th. Birthday Michel and I am sorry I missed it. Its been a long old winter in England, much like the pictures you have displayed. Hope that this comment finds you and Janine well.
