My paintings !
Mes peintures !
My paintings !
English version after the French text .
_________________Recently while we were decluttering the house to make place to some of my late father in law ‘ s furniture ( we moved them yesterday with 5 of our children ) , my wife Janine found out in our attic a file with old paintings I made when I was 14 /15 years old .
I have not painted since those years 1947 / 49. I found pleasure to draw or paint and I made it without model or photo to copy . I used only my memory and viewed in my mind the familiar sceneries . I had attended some lessons taught by the teacher who was not a specialist of art and taught may other matters . This explains the elementary look of those paintings and their poorness.
However they reflect France way of life in 1947, remained very rural and simple . For example there was no many cars and the works in the fields were made with horses . They reflect also a part of what was in the mind of a 14 years old at this timeI show them like documents and not for the artistic quality .

Le chasseur et son chien ( 1947 )The hunter and his dog ( 1947 )
Dreamer and fisher . I would have many memories to relate about this river and this meadow .
Towards the farmer market 194 My father helped at that farm during ...his holidays
Harvest 1947 / 48 In the background people make stack . They work with horses .Ces peintures font revivre bien des choses .
Those paintings make many things living again .

WOW!! These are fabulous! Thanks for sharing these treasures with us.

They are beautiful! I love this kind of work. Simple and uncomplicated, clean lines and colors! It is wonderful.
Thank you for sharing them, I'm glad they bring fond memories for you!
These are exquisite-you have such talent! Paint once more!!
,
Laurie
They are marvelous! And they bring back memories of times past for you, and that is what is important! I remember you putting some pencil (or pen) drawings here quite a while ago. They were so enjoyable, too. These are simple drawings and paintings, and they show your life as a youngster. I think it is good they are not fancy or complicated. Life was not that way back then! Love, Nancy
Tres jolie! Merveilleux!! I like them very much. Maybe you should resurrect this interest....they are great! (And I know, I live in a family of artists!) Why don't you try it again!
But I think they have artistic quality! What a treasure in your attic. I love them and they do represent another time and way of life. These are a precious family heirlooms.
They are very good and I am so glad you shared these with us! You may not think you are artistic but I definitely do. These are such treasures. If you would ever like for one of these to have a home in the States I'd be honored to have one of your paintings!
YOU bring back my own memories.... these are good and are very much in style. People want folk art for their homes these days.
Have an Amazing Weekend & God Bless!
tres bonne!
it is lovely to see these! memories are lovely things that need a place to live once and awhile.
what a beautiful time and place you lived in. j'aime 'le reveur et le pecher' le plus.
merci.
Oh, such great pictures!!!! I hope you paint again. And thank you for sharing these wonderful memories with us.
I love your paintings Michel. Imagine how much more skilled you would be today had you kept painting your entire life! A master of painting? It is fun to see these paintings. Thank you for sharing them!
<3,
Aubrey
They are beautiful! What a treasure.
Lovely art work Michel. I specialised in art at college but I didn't do anything as good as your paintings/drawings. I hope you keep them for the family as keepsakes - so put them some where safe.
Marie
What lovely art work Michel, its wonderful that you have kept them for all these years. I am glad you like the Texas postcard, I will be posting lots of photos next week
Dear Michel...why are you not painting now??? I think your style would be different, and then we would all have new treasures to look at, from your different perspective on life now.
These paintings are so lovely...are they watercolors or pastels??? Having a very busy week, but as always, thinking of you and sending you hugs...from Dallas
I will show mama these paintings of yours, she will be sure to love them, too! Love you, lowie
You would not...just do it! PLAY!

I think you under estimate the artistic skill of these drawings. They are most charming. To me the rural lifestyle is more pleasant and brings us closer to God. Thank you for sharing your paintings with us.

Don't you think it is so wonderful to find something from your past you almost forgot about many years later? It is like discovering a part of you that you have forgotten! It's so magical.
You should start painting again!
Michel! Your paintings are very much artistic quality and ones I would personally pick out to have in my home! These pictures you made...they are more than just paintings from a 14 year old...they are pieces of art! True art that comes from ones own memory and heart - I just love them! What beautiful treasures you have there!
I agree with ClassandSass...you should start painting again!
Well! Michel! Not only are you a wonderful teacher, master gardener, talented writer...the list goes on...but you are an artist too!
Our love to you all!
xoxoxo Cat
Wow Michel, they look absolutely beautiful and i have to admit they look in good condition too!! I agree with MrsCatherine, they are pieces of art!! You must start painting someday. Thank you for sharing.
lovely- i enjoy the hunting image, but overall i like the pastoral feeling of you life in sketch, and it give us a feeling of the things that mean so much to you. -g
I will say it in English to make sure I convey the right thing. Those paintings which you think so elementary and poor are really very well composed and balanced, and charming to look at. They make ME want to go right into them and become a part of them.
As others say, I think also that you should begin painting again! Also make sure you preserve these for your children and grandchildren. They will treasure them. My father plowed the ground with a horse! Tho it is easier now, I do miss the sight of that. I am so happy you saved these and for Janine to find them. Truly you are an artist in your heart!
Love,
Bev
Wonderful! I can see your enjoyment in the strokes on each paper.
Michel, these indeed are fascinating!!!
your attic must be a real treasure trove. It is amazing that you have preserved so many things of your past. it shows a remarkable senstivity on your part!
I hope you have framed them, and put them in a nice place. They are just what a painting should be - a true expression of oneself! They have so much life in them, and they show that you have always had a noticing eye - I picked up on the tree roots in the fishing picture, and how they seem to disappear in the grass only to be shown making their way down to the water. Thank you for sharing them with us!
Ah, Michel...you still paint...but with the camera, and how you "see" a scene in your camera lens...It's still very artistic. I love that you painted with watercolors...this is my favorite style of painting!
Michel,
All your paintings are beautiful! They all capture a time, a mood, a feeling. They are truly paintings, not merely documents and any collector would love to own them (although I know you would not part with them!). I especially like The Hunter and his Dog because there is an intimacy about it - one can imagine the how his dog is his only and constant companion on hunts.
I am so sorry to read of your father-in-law's passing. Yet, it seems he has led a long and rich life, and that is as much as we all could hope for.
It is a poor excuse for the long absence, but I have been really tied up with adjusting to the new job, the new people and new surroundings. It seems there is always a new event every day!
I hope that everything is going well with you and your family.
cheers
Caroline
Michel, thank you for sharing such valuable possession! They are actually pretty nice paintings, I like the first one especially. I think you were lucky in a way because cameras weren't that available, so you painted your everyday life instead. In a way, there's more life in paintings than in photographs because the artist must have put in a good amount of time making them!
These are priceless. What beautiful art work. I would have them displayed all threw out my house I'd be so pround. I always wanted to paint but did not have the talent.
have a wonderful wekend my sweet friend.
Harvest is my favorite!!!! Love, G.
I'm certainly not an artist but I can really appreciate your artwork, especially when painted by a 14/15 year old! You should paint again.
You should take the pencil again and do some painting again... from memory of course.
So many things can be expressed better visualy than with with words.
You are very talented.
Amitié
Carlo
Hi Michel,
Just stopping by now while I could, and it is such a treat to find such beautiful artwork on here of yours! You are so talented! Thank you so much for showing them here to us.
I've been meaning to mention before now that it is so sweet and thoughtful of you to have both French and English versions of your writings here. Thank you so much. I really appreciate you taking the time to do that for those of us who don't speak French. I think French is such beautiful language even though I can't speak it or write it myself.
Hope you and your family have a great weekend! (((Love & Hugs)))
Michel, these drawings are absolutely beautiful!! I love your art and these sketches certainly reflect your young life in France. They're full of charm and character.

I meant to say the hunting dog you've drawn looks like a Brittany with the tail un-docked!
Tre bien, Michel. Tres interestement. (pardon mon français).
Oh Michel .. these are very good for a lad of 14 years. Have i ever told you that I am a teacher's assistant on Mondays to the Middle and High School art department? I especially liked your portrait of the hunter and dog. You have used the minimal number of strokes of your brush, and only one colour, but the form of your subjects that certainly catches the eye, and your shading that really does reflect a more mature ability.
Well done young Michel ... well done!
How wonderful, thanks for sharing this glimpse into the past Michel. You are very talented, maybe it is time to begin painting again.
Wow! You were obviously very talented from a very young age. Very nice work, Michel!
Wow...those are really good. Michel...the artist!
RYC: Please, do laugh. That's what I'm looking for.
these are grand! i wish i had had an interest in art when i was a young person
now that i must take drawing classes, i feel so artistically inept
you did a wonderful job on them, michel - are you going to take up some painting again now that you've got a bit of time since the garden is done?
xo
Michel, all I can say if you could paint like this at 14/15 years old it sure is a pity that you gave it up. I find them absolutely great. I only wish I could paint like that now, never mind 14. Thanks so much for sharing them with us. Please if you ever put brush to canvas again then share it with me. Tim
oh wow, Michel. these are great. I especially love the first one. you should have it framed and matted. I'm saving it to my computer.
These pictures are stunning for they show both quality, talent, and composition. and belie the youth of the artist.
Thank you Michel for publishing them Ron
Perhaps Simon would like to live in one of your nice landscapes you painted long time ago.
Simon speaks so many languages as his feet. Eight.Well....not really speaking; but more a kind of rumbling.
Not easy to understand
Bien à toi
Carlo
These are good really! You may think elementary but I like them because of that quality.
Thank you for sharing.
You, Michel, have the greatest treasures in your home and life. Your paintings are wonderful, as are your cameras, and gardens, things old and sentimental, and your large and beautiful family. Most charming is your appreciation of everything. I just adore you and appreciate so much that you share with us here.
That first sketch would sell here in the states. I liked all, My friends first husband, Roger Etienne was from from France, actually Belgian by birth, painted and sold similar painting here . He also had small acting jobs. Used just the name Etienne. Last known as living in Paris. There are three of his paintings on internet for I think 300.00 dollars each.
Correction: Roger Etienne name on internet paintings sell for only 200.00 ea. Roger Etienne Everaert
He would sell little paintings finished in 5 min to business offices for 20.00 ea. while in Hollywood waiting for acting jobs
Those paintings are fabulous - and much better than I could do with my little "scratches" when I put my mind to it.
They are real treasures.
Michel! What do you mean " Not for the artistic quality" these are beautiful pieces of your memory captured by your heart and displayed in the best way possible, through your hands. they have feeling like no camera can ever show .
They are very well done for a young man. They tell the story and give one a feel for the times. Bravo Michel
Nancy
Oh those paintings are great! Why did you stop painting? You do have a talent.
I missed the blog below! Now how did I do that. It's a good blog. I don't know if I would go to the deep, dark part of Africa (snakes and wild things)...but I would like to go.
oh my goodness !!! you are sooo talented!! they are absolutely wonderful, i think!!! you have a gift, michel!!!i think you should start painting again then!!!
love, angela
wow Michel! They are fabulous!!! I think you painted with expertise! I'm lucky if I can draw stick people! LOLOLOL
I admire your talent!
Have a great weekend and God bless you and Janine ((((HUGS))))
OMG! Those paintings are wonderful. You drew well. I wish I have the talent to draw. You should continue that talent, sir.
Have a great day!
Annika
Michel,
I DID install two faucets and they are not leaking!!
Also, have replaced
the inner parts of four toilets.. again with NO leaks. Some jobs have been easier
than others, but I am not afraid to try to tackle most of them.
Hope you have a great weekend!!

RYC Bewitched was a sitcom (situation comedy) from the 70's. In the beginning episodes the story was that this young, lovely married woman was really a witch who wanted to be mortal. She finally has to tell her husband because they had a baby girl and she was a witch as well. It was a wonderful sitcom with many guests who were her witch relatives. A few years ago they made a movie of it and I will have to tell you later who starred. It is early morning here and I cannot think well!!!
I told my friend, who is in the picture I posted, about you and what a good, kind friend and person you are. She was much influenced by Pope John XIII, as many of us were after the Ecumenical Council that changed so much for our mother church. She comes from a large Irish family and sadly is the only one who goes to mass. Her parents are dead, but I only knew her mother. We had many good times during the seventies with a strong Legion of Mary and many works for charity. Now it seems the church is less interested in the old ways. Perhaps I feel this way because I am old! Did your parish change after the Ecumentical Council? I did attend mass at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris and it did not seem different from our present mass.
Bonjour Michel. I am so glad you found these pictures. I think you could frame them and give one to each of your grandchildren. I think they would treasure them.
I know it is a sad thing to lose a parent. I am sure Janine is still trying to realize that her father is gone. A new life for everyone. It is perfectly wonderful to have many of his special pieces of furniture, a wonderful reminder of the past.
I am trying to read the français. I also watch French tv for a little time every day.
These drawings are actually very very good. I like drawing too.
About Elizabeth. She has been playing piano since age 3! we purchased a little Kawai keyboard and she learned very quickly to play Mozart, and learn to read music She started piano lessons with another teacher (I could no longer teacher her well enough) when she was 6. She always learned and played old music, beautiful classical music. Then iin high school grade 10 she was asked by the jazz group teacher if she would be interested in playing jazz. Lizzie never played jazz but she thought this would be fun and she would try.
She loved it. and played for the high school. She also played a large very heavy xylophone one time for a marching band trip when the high school played in Texas for a football game in the new year... perhaps 2004.
Now she is in college, and she still loves the music, She plays piano in a jazz group, takes jazz lessons, many other music classes, also music theory (which is trés difficile) and she also takes classical piano lessons. she is learning Schumann's Papillon! I am so excited about this piece of music!
Lizzie is studying and hopefully to graduate with a degree in management or business but many at the college think she should be playing the piano for her career.
Bonne Journeé Bon Week-end!
Love, Rosemary
RYC: I went there! That is so coincidental...
I had to say that I did more talking to the spiders than listening to them!
Those are absolutely wonderful and...I disagree with you. You are way too modest. Those are great paintings!!
Vous etes un artiste magnifique.!! Tres magnifique!
Do you have any rural areas? It seems like if there is a patch of land someone wants to plow down the trees and wildflowers and build a shopping center or a housing development. That's the way it is here. All of the birds are losing their homes. It's very sad! I HATE it!
Well, I shouldn't leave on such a negative note! We do have national parks.
votre amie,
Francoise.
These are wonderful pictures Michael. Great that you've shared them with us.
Oh how lovely!! And why, may I ask, are you not still painting? These paintings show some natural talent, my friend! And thank you for reminding me of how simple and beautiful life can be!!
I really love those paintings. You are really artistic. I'm listening to some sentimental music while writing this comment. SO I did reminiscent about some happy times when looking at those pictures. It warmed me heart. Love this post. 5 stars form me
Keep up the good work!
I really like them ~ very nice paintings!!
Have a nice weekend, Michel!
Love, Aimee
Super paintings. You have really set the standard for 14/15 year olds high. If I find my paintings ... then I will probably show it as well. but it wont be anywhere near as nice as yours. I really liked the hunter and his dog and the harvest. you should draw some now that you have discovered these paintings
They are a lot better than I could ever do....as we jokingly say, the only thing I draw is flies....I think I will stick with a camera!
I just left Mark Lupton's site, and couldn't help but wonder what was in his mind at age 14 -- beer? I see you also enjoyed his post about the dating websites and his COUSIN !!!
Your artwork is very pleasant and calming to look at. Do you still paint? You should.
Ah, the French. So charming in every way. Everyone enjoys you so much!
Oh they are good Michel. I enjoyed seeing these. You are a man of many talents. Judi
Michel, you were a talented young man.
I really like the hunter and his dog.
Amitie
Thanks for the link to that wonderful article, Micheal, Love to you, Judi
How can I pray for you in your whirlwind?
Hi Michel,
Yes, perhaps I will put up an entry this week, or in time for Hallowwe'en!
Cheers!
Ces peintures sont magnifiques!!!
RE. your comment: I will pray indeed.
ryc well, actually i'm a france supporter but unfortunately they didn't get far. i was rooting for south africa because i didn't want england to win! hehe
yes, you are right. it was boring but it's because england kept trying to score goals so then s.africa seems to have copied england's tactic. sigh. yes, it was quite boring but i'm just glad s.africa won. we go to beijing on wednesday again, michel.
sigh. oh well. shou ga nai=it can't be helped in japanese. ok,
to you!!! angela
Thanks for the comment
Really appreciate it. You must be really talented to be able to draw those kinda pictures at such a young age. Do you still draw now?
Thanks for the comment
Really appreciate it. You must be really talented to be able to draw those kinda pictures at such a young age. Do you still draw now?
You are a very special man of many talents.
I am glad you like what I had to say about love I count you as an expert about love among my friends. Judi
oh michel, well i hope whatever happens to you and your family too on wednesday works out well!!!
i am sad i won't be able to do a regular blog...sigh...but at least it's not forever!!! love
angela
RYC: No apology necesary. I do things like this often. I wish I spoke French. I am impressed with your English. I took French in Jr. College and Spanish in high school. Now I can not speak either. When I do try I get the two confused.
I try to speak spanish to my gardeners and incorrectly use a French pronunciation. The gardeners laugh. I laugh at myself.
Oh yes, I am afraid to ffly. Tell Janine I understand her fear
Wow! These are fantastic!!!
:O) Just popping my head in to say hello and just amazed at how many comments you receive. Looking over the comments regarding your art is just wonderful to read!
xoxoxo Cat
Well done my friend ! I too remember when things were done by horses. Standing by and watching a cellar dug by a team of horses and some kind of drag shovel. Of course then, later men with pick and shovel even our the hole at both ends. Our bread company had a wagon and team, and many dairys also delivered by horse and wagon.
Those were days when though work hours were long, people valued their free time and had enjoyment doing it.
They are so cool... "cool" doesn't really cover how really special they are.
You should frame them. They are very emotional. I think I like the first one the best.
You're a neat person. I'm glad I found your page.
I like your paintings Michel, they are very detailed and carefully done! Very nice especially well kept for such a long time!
I am in awe of your talents with art, and at such a young age. You should have continued this. Yesterday we shopped for art supplies. How about you too?
Regarding the aroma that comes to you when coming down the stairs...
Isn't it funny how there is a certain point one reaches, coming down the stairs, where the wonderful baking smells greets you. It is almost at the level of the 1st story ceiling...maybe just slightly above it that it gets you! It reminds me of the cartoons they show when the smells of cooking waver through the air, enticing you. Many times they depict this as a very long arm with a hand and the finger tickling one's nose and then pointing them in the direction they need to go to find where the delicious smells are coming from! That always made me giggle. But how true that is!
I think you are a very lucky man, as you said, to have a wife that cooks for her darling husband! :O)
xoxo Cat
Oh nooo dearest Michel! It is what you wrote, in wonderful English, that made me think of what I did. You do that, you know! You make us all think about things - this is truly a gift you have!
xoxo Cat
Bonjour Michel.
First, to answer your question, I don't know who the model is in that photo. It is a fashion editorial by a stylist/photograhy duo called Mert and Marcus.
I think it's fantastic you kept these pictures. It's important, I think, to keep track of things in your life - and the best way to do it is by keeping a little bit of everything. (Though not so much for it to be a burden, I guess.)
I have a closet of paintings myself. Some of them make me cringe a little, but they are markers of who I was once, so I keep them. I'll appreciate them later.
g.
I love them! They even look French!
Isn't it amazing to look back at what we once were? These must have made for an amazing discovery.
I am # 101, isn't that amazing??? Big hug and wishing you a fine day, dear Michel!
Love, Lowie
Oh, how beautiful!! I loved that your art reflected what was going on in your life at that time. Thank you for sharing these with everyone.
Karen
I really like the paintings, Michel! Do you still paint?
I will try to get a photo of Amy to show you soon! You are not the only one who has asked, either!
Dear Micheal,
I find every "document" to be more than charming. If only I were as talented I would be so very happy. I think you underestimate the value of your work / creativity.
Regards,
Oh Michel, I'm a girl! Haha it's ok. No worries. I understand it is difficult because I don't post pictures of myself.
Hello again!
I have to go to a funeral some time next week, so I have to find out exactly when before I can make s doctor's apt. The doctor called me this afternoon to tell me all my blood tests were good and my blood is fine now. *grin*
Thank you for the words of encouragement. I'm getting more comfortable and this house feels like home more and more. I just miss my old life sometimes. :} I think part of my feelings are coming from the thought of having something in my organs that needs to be removed. I thought it was normal to have that lump... guess not! I've never been in the hospital except to have a baby and that was fun. I'm not to stressed about it, though. I know everything is gonna be fine.
I have enjoyed the pictures very much. I wonder if you kept up with it - even just the pencil sketches. I didn't keep up as I should have. Now it is harder for me to concentrate.
Have a good week, Michel!
Rachel
I think your paintings are great! I hope everything's okay. I've been looking for this week's post and so far it isn't there. I look forward to hearing from you.
Bonnie
Saw a comment you made elsewhere, Michel. I pray Janine is OK. Let us know about her surgery soon! You are both in my prayers!!
LOL).
Your paintings are marvellous wish I was as clever.
Angela
Your drawings are great! My favorite is the hay stacking. Thats what i see around my house. But there not stacks there bails. love fancy
Thank you for sharing with us!
dear man, there is a gentleness that each painting cannotes and they aspire to a much softer side of life...how you thought as a boy and continue in your manhood. I like them and had I discovered them, you better believe I'd frame them and place them upon my wall. These are so much more than art....it is a part of you when you were young.... I think you have always been a most gentle soul. Bless you. GraceAnn
La moisson - my favourite
Its just that, I am not going to be on xanga too much I have a lot going on in my life right now and school is kicking me in the leg. And I am stress to the extend that I cried myself to be every night...I am always sad. I don't know what else to dd. I can't talk about what has been going on with me heree...its just too hard. I am only 20 and I am hating my life already...why is that?
