Mary Magdalena in Provence. (S.E . France )
Marie - Madeleine en Provence
Mary Magdalena in Provence
English version below the pictures
Last June we climbed this mountain called " la Sainte – Baume " in Provence ( SE France ) no far to Marseille .
At first we crossed an antique forest with old trees preserved . Growing in the shadow of the mountain towards the north they are mot Mediterranean trees .
---------------------------------
.
Then we hit the white limestone cliff . We went up to the monastery standing there for the 5th century near a vast cave .
-----------------------------------
« Le Christ mon espérance est ressuscité ;
» il vous précédera en Galilée «
Sublime amour !
Le calvaire The Calvary Please click to enlarge Photo M. Fauquet June 07
According the Provencal tradition , Mary Magdalena , the woman who saw the first the empty Sepulchre and was the first that Jesus spoke with after his resurrection ,
came here in Provence chased from Palestine because she said what she had seen and heard . She passed the last 30 years of her life in a vast cave in this mountain .
The place still is a place for pilgrimage . At the entrance is staying an impressing Calvary . Inside there are altar , statue of Mary Magdalena and her relics .
For us it has been a discovery . Unfortunately I failed the photos inside the cave .
Mary Magdalena , the loving woman ! Essential ! Being there I thought of a Gregorian song from the 11th century , that is sung at Easter Sunday “ Victimae Paschali laudes “
of wich I quote an excerpt that always touched me :
“ - Tell us, Mary Magdalen,
”what did you see in the way?
” - I saw the sepulchre of the living Christ, and I saw the glory of the Resurrected one:
” The Angelic witnesses, the winding cloth, and His garments.
” The risen Christ is my hope:
” He will go before His own into Galilee.”
Sublime love !
Yes the Mountain " la Sainte Baume " in Provence feels really special .
The second part of the musical background is the Gregorian song whom I speak

Wow! She lived the last 30 years of her life in a cave? I never heard that before.
beautiful! It's hard to believe that it's just there in the mountains like that.
thank you Michel for the pictures and always showing us something about the faith of others. blessings!! melinda
Looks like a fun trip. So much to explore. I also enjoyed seeing the joy and happiness of your family in your last post!
<3,
Aubrey
I heard that Mary Magdeline went to France after the crusifixion, but didn't know where. Thank you for this info and for the photos.
This is so very beautiful and so moving. The music is appropriate and the story so tender.
Who is the lovely lady in the picture...?
I'm not sure that I thanked you for the kind birthday wishes....merci mon amie. Vous(or is it "tu"?) est tres gentile.
Love,
Francoise
A very nice adventure for you and your wife. The first pic to the right reminds me of West Virginia, it has always amazed me how those pioneer's built home's high up on the side of mountain's. Wishing you and your family a relaxing day.
Shirley
Such a lovely entry and what a grand place to visit. I am amazed at how the monestaries are built into such difficult to get at places. The photo with your wife is an impressive piece that allows you to see the difficulty. Breathtaking to have done the pilgrimage, I am sure of that and always breathtaking to be so priviledged to see your trips and other parts of your life. I truly enjoy it all.
Wonderful words you have quoted. The music is beautiful.
Becca
Michel, such a beautiful post. The display of Calvary and the Crucifixion is so realistic. This depiction makes me see the agony of the moment. Thank you for sharing this with us after your special journey to this place of memory and worship. I noticed with great attention the flowers growing out of the side of the clifts and my soul reflected on how Christ gives us hope in such difficult situations.
Thank you for this explanation of the card you sent me. It is a very impressive place and I should imagine very conducive to prayer. We had Plain Chant lessons at school and though I love the " new " hymns we sing now there is something special Gregorian Chant esp. when sung by men.( monks etc.) I have heard that Mary Magdelen was considered by some to be a leader of the early Church, another myth no doubt.
Marie
This visit sounds very moving, indeed, and the music makes it very real and intense. Thanks for sharing these.
You take wonderful care of Janine. That's why she looks so young..
We have two cats. Nous avon deux chat(s)...Jolie et Sasha.....Charlie is a resident cat at Waterman Cove where we visit with JouJou. I hope our little white angel lives a long long time but she is slowing down.
Love,
Francoise
Wow!
Quel place!
C'est merveilluex!
Merci pour tes mots, mon amie. xx
What a wonderful place to visit, its interesting to hear all about Mary Magdelen. Our priest at Mass on Sunday talked about the wonderful spirtual time the young people of our parish at Lourdes last month.
Is this anywhere near Perpignan? I was there once staying overnight near the town in some hills.
What a beautiful, moving experience that must have been. I cannot view your pictures, so will have to come back and try again sometime. My isp will not work very well when there is music and pictures both.
Love
Edie Rose
This is truly amazing and I enjoyed the pictures as well as the beautiful chant.
Thanks for sharing this world treasure.
These are beautiful photos Michel. Janine is absolutely lovely. I hope to look so beautiful when I have grandchildren.
The cave in the mountain is amazing.
So is the beautiful scene here with the three crosses and MaryM and the other Mary and one disciple, hmmm who is that one....
I hope you are well.
Loving regards to you and Janine
~Rosemary
So pretty and ancient! I appreciate the story of Mary Magdalene so much. I believe if we are honest we can all identify with her sense of indeptedness and gratitude to Jesus!
How beautiful Micheal. Judi
I had never heard of this! How wonderful that my Xanga friend allows me to share the wonder of this discovery. Thank you!
Beautiful! Thanks for sharing Michel! Wonderful. I had never heard of this before.
Hope all is well in your part of the world. Ang
My dear Michel,
Thank you for stopping in. Yes, I am the author of the cat video. I love to watch them play, but I could see that Josephine was
teasing her kittens with her tail. I am glad I caught it on video.
I am doing well. I hope you are as well.
Rachel
What a magnificent place to visit, Michel! Those cliffs are stunning and it's so interesting about the legend you've written of. It would be truly inspirational seeing the cliffs and taking in this spectacle you've captured in film.
Thanks so much for stopping by my site and all you've said while I had PC problems! You are a dear man.
That is a beautiful sight!! One I would love to see. This chant is so beautiful also.
It all makes for lovely post Michel!!!
The cliffs are beautiful. It looks like you had a wonderful day for a very emotional experience. The Mayans built shelter (actually like 4 story condos) into the side of cliffs. I saw one in Arizona this spring called Montezuma's castle. It's was wonderful!
Mary Magdalena , the loving woman ! I know of her love and the love of Mary's son first hand.

Belles photos et histoire. Les montagnes francais ont beaucoup de secrets. Janine n'a a peine change depuis 30 ans!
Your final picture is breathtaking ---simply superb Bravo Ron
RYC:
I have always been fond of Cyrano and the particular dialogue you quoted as it is a masterfully written piece. I read the book years ago and have on my list to purchase the movie with Steve Martin. I have always felt sympathy for Cyrano not quite relating to him never seeing my nose as quite that large. I do, however, really appreciate your reminder of the particular speech as it is the finest written for "the nose".
Best regards and biggest of smiles,
Becca
Bon jour, Michel,
chele_d ici. A bientot!!
hello Michel, Thank you for your comment.
I am not seeing the dermatologist. Blizzie is. she has very bad acne and she started taking accutane, after many other treatments that were not successful.
Oh Blizzie wants to go shopping now, so bye-bye
:::waves:::
Merci tellement de vos mots aimables, Michel.
It is said the Jesus and Mary visited Scotland... In fact there is a Jesus Island, and an old church window that shows Jesus and Mary together and Mary is pregnant.
Best wishes to you and yours!
intersting! That is now another trip I need to take when I win the Lottery
Dear Michel,
I would love to feel the magic in the cave, as Mary Magdelena did. How did it feel in that cave?
Since you write of last june, I am wondering what your summer plans are now...I think you are inside the house, preparing french fries with Janine...
Any other harvests for you this month? How is your family, and Marina? Thinking of you, sending you love, Lauren
I live in Pennsylvania,it is a pretty state with green rolling hills.
wow, michel! wonderful!! lovely lovely!!
ryc: It's a river... the grasses on the bottom are so fun to watch dancing.
Have a great day Michel! That picture of your wife is beautiful!
Interesting that she lived the last 30 years in a cave. Judi
Absolutely magnificent, Michel. What extraordinary memories you have made. And the music on your site is befitting.
Mary has been slandered by all accounts and you pay her such tribute. Well done!
Her suffering was an offering to Him and was why He loved her so. If only I could look upon those experiences as an offering. Thank you, Michel, for sharing this with us. As other have noticed, Janine is lovely and I think that is because of your love for each other.
God bless you, my friend
Bev
Michel, you have a very good memory! Yes, I did post pictures of my trip to Arizona this past April. Montezuma's Castle is a National Monument, so I was given a "park pass" (free access to National Monuments or parks) because of my using my scooter for distances. My companions also get to park for free, or have a reduced entrance fee.
With Mary Madeline living her last 30 years in France no wonder faith is so strong there.
In the United States the Shakers had a relevation by a woman and I think another religion was founded by a woman. Since there are a lot of women in religion it is a wonder when men start religions, when women is often the backbone of religion.
Sorry for not visiting often, but glimses of France just inspires me....
It is a very special place indeed. Thank you for posting it, I had never heard of this place.
I wonder why the caves have this kind of religious fascination, caves and mountain tops, but caves are special in the story of religion.
One does not really need to believe the real story of Mary. M. leaving there to feel the special mistycal power of a place.
Terri wil not agree with me about this point for sure.
Perhaps one day I will go and visit this place too, with dog and birds.
Your site is loading very slowly, perhaps because of the size?
Amitié
Carlo
Hi my friend
I like the picture you took. One could sit there a long time and just reflect, about the things of God. I also like the music you have on your site.
How absolutely magical. Your wife is glowing in that photo! Thank you.
Our protesant religion has not taught such about Mary Magdelina being chased from Palestine. It is so good to see and learn much more.
(xanga is not letting me know when any of my subs have updated. Puts me further than ever behind.)
You're so lucky to have visited this place. I wish I could too. I find these places so mysterious.
BTW, thanks so much for the nice comment.
Have a nice weekend!!!
Annika
What beautiful music. And I had no idea that such beautiful sites existed in France. You wrote on my Xanga, I think, that you feel I would like France. What I've seen of it has stunned me in a very good way. I hope to go back some day. Thank you. And thanks for bringing me peace with these chansons.
Regardant ta comment à moi...tu me fais rire, doucement. Merci.
Absolutely a beautiful place. A climb worth taking. Photos to boot with such a way. Beautiful music. I stopped playing music because one of my subscribers couldnt come to my site. I love music and want to but I like my subs to come too.
I love to quilt and craft. I just want things to be finished so can get back into it. Your a lot of fun to be around.
Thank you for the beautiful visuals and of course reminding us of Mary Magdalena. Also for your very nice comment. I am enjoying home cooked food after a long time. Hope all is well with you. The pics on your earlier post on Manon's birthday are also very well taken.
My dear Michel,
RYC: Isn't it funny the things we dream about?! And it gets all twisted up in our minds. I fixed the entries so that only
one shows up. I hope your week is going well. - Rachel
Very wonderful. I love the music. I must seek out beautiful places again.
How beautiful, Michel! You are able to visit such stunning places, and you are kind enough to share them with us through your photographs. Thank you!
Love, Aimee
Thank you, Michel, for your prayers. How lovely to know that a brother all the way in France is praying for our mothers!
Beautiful pictures. It looks like a very interesting place to visit.
I am still in Seattle, but I live in Lynnwood, just a few miles north of the city. My job though is in Seattle.
I have to have tests every 6 months. I go to a blood cancer doctor.
I have a high Immunoglobulin M... I don't really know why. I am so tired of tests.
The doctor thinks I might have non-hodgkins lymphoma but they cannot find anything to treat.
So, every 6 months he asks for a lot of tests. I hate them.
I am not brave.
So pristine and beautiful! I love these pictures. Yes, Boston was very nice, and I miss the ocean so badly, as well as my friend!
I am so happy that you choose to take us with you when you travel Michel. Breathtaking this last one.
those are beautiful pictures and a very moving story! I didn't know she lived in a cave her last 30 years ..and to be able to go and see that place must have been wonderful!
Take care Michel....God bless you and Janine ((((HUGS))))
)
The music you have chosen goes so well with this post! You mentioned that inside the cave were a few of Mary Magdalena's relics - would you be able to tell us what some of those things were? I too had heard of the story of how some escaped towards France, Germany and England and how King David's line continued on. I will have to find the book that talks about that. I have a list of places I would like to visit in France - I think now that this is one place I would like to see! Thank you for sharing this with us!
You had asked about home schooling...I am sorry to get back to you so late. We have been in full swing this past week with schooling! When we had students and their chaperones from France stay with us - they asked a lot of questions about home schooling and why we chose to do this instead of the public education system we have here. After explaining our reasons and I also believe in seeing our children - they all agreed this was a very good thing.
Home schooling is like going to "Private School" but you do so at home. Parent's have the wonderful oppurtunity to put everything they have into the education of their children in a such a personal way that a teacher can not possibly do with so many students, all the paper work and the many restrictions placed upon teachers today - not to mention they are not paid enough and with limited money given to them by the government to teach - they use their own money to be able to provide tools needed for the classroom. I believe in France, teachers have more competition to be a successful teacher where as here - if a teacher is not good - it takes forever to get rid of them because of the "red tape" so to speak. Other issues for us is who are children are being influenced by and what may be taught in another child's home may not be what we wish for our children to be exposed to. I am about teaching my children all the things necessary for them to know and understand so that they can function in the world - I do not try to keep them hidden under a rock as so many people seem to think about home schooling families (especially those of us who are Christian Home Schoolers). I do try to give my children a well rounded education with a higher standard than what is set in public schools today.
In the area we live in - the education level is very low. If I were to place my children in the public school they would have to move my children up several grade levels. Sarah is 12 years old and in the 7th grade and David is 11 and in the 5th grade. Academically, they are much more advanced but that is only because we have taught them and taken the time to teach them. This can be done with public schooling as well but unfortunately, many parent's do not take the time to help their children in their education. Also in this area, academics is not the primary focus but athletics sure is! There also seems to be a lack of higher mindedness...there is no desire to excel or try and learn to do things better. It is sad to see. This is not an attitude I wish my children to have!
Sarah and David have a great desire to learn new things and also to be challenged in their work. We do have our days but this is part of learning - learning to work through the days we are not 100%. :O) As a mother - it is so wonderful to see how much my children have learned but most importantly to see them become mature, responsible and God loving adults is truly a wonderful thing to see!
David has been home schooled his whole life and Sarah had been in public school for the first two years. She does not miss it and well...David has not experienced but can see with some of the other children - he does not want to attend public school. We attend a group of home schoolers that meet up 3 x's month and we have a co-op or cooperative where we have teachers come in and teach certain subjects one of which will be Latin (which I feel is very important for the children to learn). We also belong to a history club which is a very involved group. Combined, the teachers and parent's in these groups all have the same like-minded feelings and thoughts regarding the education of their/our children - it is very important to us all that our children get the best education we can afford to give to them.
The children and I were studying Vivaldi while listening to his work and I thought of you and your love for classical music. I do love the baroque period! We will be taking the next couple of weeks to learn about him and his music - something we can do as home schoolers! :O)
You also mentioned the state of your desk...
I would love to come over and help you with that! ;O) I love to organize things but most importanly I would love to be able to talk with you and Janine - I think that would be the best part of traveling to France!
My love to you both!
xoxo Cat
RYC: Thank you. I so agree the Yoga (stretching, breathing, etc) is fantastic but the choice is ours, you are so right.
Thanks for sharing your traveling pics. I love the one at calvary....confirmation for my 'perfection'.
You share such lovely pictures and stories. Thank you.
RYC - my granddaughter is only 6 but acts like she's all grown up and wants to make big decisions and do grown-up things. Such fun to listen to her. She would fix all of everyone's and all of the world's problems if she had her way.
I love the farm. Many things go through my mind each day and I have to write them down.
Glad you liked them. Judi
RYC: Thanks for your concern, Michel. Grenada is unharmed.
Thank you for your wishes Michel, the staples were removed without to much pain and i now have three more weeks with my leg strapped up and walking with "Becky's" , I was in Provence once for three days with work, i was planting 5000 plants in bio station d'epuration , so i didnt see too much , but it is a beautiful part of France and i'm sure i will visit there again but not for work!
Splendid! Beautiful music and what a wonderful pilgrimage!
Hi Michel, what lovely scenery and the music you have chosen is very appropriate. I love your posts as whatever the subject they are very educational also I find they give me a view of the real France with all its culture. You have a wonderful gift of portraying the artistic in your posts as well. One feels the urge to shout aloud "Vive La France," when viewing them. Great!
Tim
Michel,
Do you do a lot of hiking?? Looks like quite a trip..
Glad to hear from you.
Have a nice week.
Christy
Good story. I havent visited for a while and I am sorry about Janine's father. it must have been a sad time for you all. How is your daughter in law, I believe she was also unwell? I wish you all the best.
I always enjoy my visits here... Thank you Michel for showing us this place -- a place many of us will never get to see. I would love to see that monastery on that white limestone cliff.
RYC
I have three children and one husband. It is my husband David who has gone to the Birdsville races and it is an annual horse race however it is the trip that is most important. Henry is my youngest. He is 16 and is completing interesting work experience mustering cattle. My other son Elliot is actually living in Paris at the moment working in a hotel. My daughter Laura lives near by. thanks for visiting.
It is so nice to open up my blog in the morning and find a word of encouragment from you, Michel. I have twelve hours
to put in today at work. Hearing something positive helps a lot. I hope you are enjoying a good Sunday. Take care. - Rachel
The dog is a Pomeranian, and was very cute-always wagging her furry, curly tail! I loved my trip, but I still want to be there, I feel a need to be near the ocean! Love to you.
how marvelous breathtaking actually you are blessed to be able to experience such earthly treasures i being in the "new world" cannot make such sacred pilgrimages easily alto i do understand why she chose to live there in a cave thank you Michel i always enjoy your adventures may God bless you & your beautiful wife she looks younger every year as do you love Mag
So beautiful and such a feeling of holiness
Thank you for sharing with us
Love to you both, Nancy
Oh, such beautiful pictures!! Thanks so much for sharing them! Just wanted to stop by super quick to let you know I'm thinking of you! Thanks so much for all your kind words, dear friend. (((Love & Hugs)))
RYC: It has been going one direction from my point.
France has some interesting destinations. That's cool that you and Janine still get out to have such interesting adventures.
The Beach Boys songs are great--have you ever given them a listen?! Cape Cod was so different from anything I'd ever seen-had so much fun!
Good morning, Michel...RYC: yes, I will be able to hire her as an outside consultant to do the project! I am sooo happy! Also, do not worry about me and the stairs, I will be careful not to fall...
Let's have some tea now, so I can see how you are doing....*grin* Luv, Lowie
I am going to teach by email. I have a counseling degree. I can teach people how to live the law of attraction and use it in their lives. I am excitied about this. Judi
Tho the sound is distorted for me now that I cannot hear well, I still remember the Gregorian Chants . I had a record that was dear to me when I was in my thirties. Even tho I cannot comprehend them here, the memory of them thrills me!. Thank you, Michel.
It always makes me cry inside that he was treated so...and his mom...my heart aches for her...and all those treated like this and those that loved them...it is such feeling that they died for us so...your mountain climbing is so very exciting and your wife...her face Michel...she shows her love for all in her life...you two are truly blessed...many huggs and many wishes for more adventures for you and your Janine...huggs...Sassy
such great pictures and beautifully told...
bonjour cher michel!!! ryc, hubby had acupuncture because he's run down too and hasn't been 100% lately also. he works too much and tries his best to take his best care of me also, especially with all my fevers, so he's run down and tired too and has little energy, so he needs to take care of himself too! the acupuncture makes him feel better so i'm happy for that!
hope you and marina are well!! have a wonderful day!!!
Leonidas sent me here... and I've been reading back a little. Your posts are charming. (The potato picture made me impossibly happy.)
The reason for my visit is that I am going to Paris in a couple of weeks (with a friend) and am looking for a place to stay. Though I understand it's a long shot, we're leaving no stone unturned. Leonidas said you were a 'wise xangan who lives in France'. I realize you're north of Paris, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to see if you had any ideas. (Who to contact, what areas are best, etc...)
(We've been looking for a short-term rental - a studio, maybe.)
As I said, I know it's a long shot and if you have no ideas, that's fine too.
This is such an arbitrary question from a stranger!
g.
In answer to your question. I do have a hard time getting on other sites, that have both music and pictures(or just a lot of pictures).
It just took 5 minutes for your comments to open up right now. The pictures have still not loaded.
I can see just the top of all of them. It has nothing to do with you, just my isp. Have a great day!!!
Love,
Edie Rose
