Le week - end juste avant mon anniversaire ma femme Janine confectionna deux belles tartes à la crème et aux pruneaux et une petite .
J’ étais autant attiré par la vue que par l’ odeur !
Vous me direz c’ est une tarte à la crème ordinaire ! Pas du tout . C’ est une tarte spéciale , au parfum spécial dont la tradition
remonte à ma grand ‘ mère maternelle . Celle - ci était avant la guerre , renommée dans le village pour la qualité de ses tartes .
Cela ne la dérangeait pas d’ en faire 5 à 10 d’ un seul coup dans le four de boulanger qu’ elle avait dans sa maison ( comme c ' était
le cas de beaucoup dans les villages )avant qu’ elle ne fut complètement détruite par les bombardements en 1944

The week end before my birthday ma wife Janine baked two beautiful custard tarts including prunes and a small one .
I was as much attracted by the sight as I was by the smell .
You can tell me it ‘ s an ordinary custard tart ! Not at all ! It is a special tart , with a special scent whom the tradition
comes from my maternal side grandmother . This last was renowned in her village in the area of Boulogne ( north of France harbour ) before the war II .
She was not bothered to bake 5 or 10 tarts in a row in the bakery oven she owned in her house ( like many people at this time in the villages ) .
This was before her house was completely destroyed by a bombing in 1944 .
Après elle la plus jeune de ses filles , Yolande , continua la tradition ., en utilisant le four de sa cuisinière .
Tous nos enfants et nous-mêmes étions enchantés par la tarte de tante Yolande , tarte que l’ on dévorait avec tellement de plaisir !
Mais avant de la manger il fallait l’ admirer , puis en apprécier son odeur en la humant et enfin nous la mangions religieusement ..
On parlait du temps passé .
Janine demandait toujours la recette ! Quelle recette ? répondait la tante . Pour elle c’ était une sorte de routine . Pas besoin d’ écrits !
Finalement Janine parvint à lui faire dire l’ essentiel de la recette . Cependant il lui fallut trois ou quatre ans pour qu’on retrouve enfin
le goût et le parfum de cette fameuse tarte de la Tante Yolande et de la Grand ‘ mère !!!
Ne me demandez donc pas la recette de ce délice dont Janine a retrouvé le secret .
Mais elle est toujours appréciée lors des repas familiaux comme le montre la photo ci - dessous prise en Juin 2006 ..
Je ne sais pas si une de nos filles continuera la tradition .

After her , the youngest of her daughters , Yolande , continued the tradition , in using the oven of her cooker .
All of our six children and both us were enchanted by Aunt Yolande ‘ s tart that we devoured with delight .
But before to eat we had to admire it , then put a quarter closer our nose to appreciate the perfume and at last we ate it religiously .
We spoke of the past time !
Janine always asked the recipe ! What recipe ? the aunt answered . For her it was a kind of routine . No need of writings !
Finally Janine succeeded to have in the main the recipe . But she needed 3 or 4 years to find again at last
the taste and the scent of the famous tart of Aunt Yolande and the grandmother !!!
So , don’ t ask me the recipe of this delight of which Janine has found again the secret .
I can only say it always is appreciated in the familial gatherings as the picture above taken in June 2006 shows .
I don’t know if one of our daughters will continue the tradition .

I will not ask for the receipe, but I can smell the tart from looking at the picture.
I am sure some of the new generation will take it over,but it will take some time before they get the right parfum.
I bet there was not much tart left.

Michel, est-ce que vous vous rappelez de mon menu de reveillon de Noel 2006? J'ai fait des recettes traditionnels du Canada Francophone de mon enfance: la tourtière, la tarte au sucre, des carrottes en sirop d'érable.
Malheureusement, ma mère est décédé dans l'année 2000 de la sclerose en plaque, et mon père n'a pas put trouver ses recettes pour moi. Alors, j'ai recherché sur l'internet et j'ai trouvé quelques recettes qui ressemblaient ce que je me souvenais de mon enfance.
J'ai partagée une des tartes au sucre avec ma grand-mère (la mère à ma mère) et elle m'a dit que mon tarte au sucre était aussi délicieux que celui de ma mère!
Elle m'a dit qu'il y a deux secrets: on doit toujours utiliser des ingrédients de très haute qualité, et on doit toujours être de bonne humeur pendant qu'on fait nos tartes.

Le garcon dans la deuxième photo - c'est le JUMEAU de mon petit frère Jason! Ils sont exactement pareilles! Les cheveux, la peau, le menton, les lunettes...
Il y a des gens qui disent que chaque personne sur la terre a un "doppelganger" - c'est-a-dire, quelqu'un dans le monde qui est notre jumeau ou jumelle. Je viens de trouver celui de mon frère!
Si je peux trouver un photo je vais vous le montrer.

Mmm. I'm hungry now, Michel! It's almost lunchtime here so I will have something to eat soon...but not as good as that delicious dessert!

it is more than a tart isn't it, it is your Aunt Yolande, years of memorable family shared time, your grandmother, the memory of the home that was bombed, the rememberance of a smile. Scent and taste are so important in the history of a family memory tree. -g
Janine is a very special woman....and so are all the women in your life. You are very lucky and I see that you appreciate that.
I wish there had not been so much destruction from the war. The buildings were destroyed...but not the spirit and the love.
Such a delicious tradition must be carried on!

Mmm, it looks so delicious! I am on a (successful) diet presently and my mouth is watering. Twenty six pounds and 14 more to go.
RYC: Who goes through life attempting to reach The Rose, unscathed by its thorns? Indeed, my mother had an extreme sense of "duty"....whatever that was. Dad was demonstratively "loving." Mom, early on in her life, despite it having been undiagnosed, truly suffered from a very rare dementia, which affected the people she loved and who loved her. It's my "only" consolation. Having written that, I cannot say that I didn't learn from that adversity. It tested the mettle of my character...and I became very strong. I did go eyeball to eyball with the challenge (cross) and stood and met it...not always in thanksgiving, believe me...however Christ held my hand through it all. My mother was a skewered blessing in my life and it is ONLY now, through thoughtful contemplation and understanding that I had to walk the walk after having talked the talk. I am truly blessed. And I do agree with your kind words, with my addendum...mother was a beast!
You call those tartes?! I call those pies. A tart is much smaller. At least that is what my mother and grandmother used too tell me when they were baking.

The tart looks delicious. Today I made a pecan pie for my husbands birthday. It's very special to make food that pleases the recipient.

Janine is a very good cook, as I well know, so I'm sure she will pass the recipe on to your daughters - in time Food very often conjures up memories though I doubt if my cooking will ever inspire happy memories in my children

))) Ils sont bons mais ont la propriété de disparaître très vite. La tarte de Janine est très invitante, il parait d'en sentir le parfum. Mes compliments à la cuisinière qui a retrouvé l'ancienne recette!
Je pense que Gwenstylez a bien dit: la qualité des ingrédients compte beaucoup dans la réussite d'une recette. Ce que j'essaye toujours de faire en automne, lorsqu'il y a beaucoup de fruits, c'est la tarte tatin, mais je n'ai pas la "véritable" recette, et parfois j'invente. Les résultats sont en tout cas comestibles, étant les ingrédients de bonne qualité.

Oh mon Dieu -- vos tartes semblent delicieuses, Michel!
Mon voyage était.. ben, pas mal. La plage et tout étaient incroyables, mais notre vol à Ottawa était annulé et nous avons attendu presque 24 heures pour un autre avion! Tant pis, nous avons eu un bon voyage en fin!
Pour arreter la musique, simplement pousse le bouton en haut de la page qui dit "PAUSE" (ou "STOP") et je pense que ca cessera. J'ai mis des vidéos de Glasgow sur mon blog (les "neds"... les adolescents err.. étanges.. hehe tu va voir!).
J'ai commencé à lire un nouveau livre francais --> Le quartier des oubliés. C'est un livre québecois alors je pense pas que tu l'as déjà lu.. j'ai juste commencé mais je pense que ca sera intéressant!

I have a few old recipes jotted down by a great-aunt that are pretty vague - and she didn't title them either. I wonder if she was trying to re-create a recipe from somebody else?
Dearest Michel...I missed you, too! I come here, and I find a sense of home...the prune tarts remind me of my grandmother, Philichetta's prune turnovers...they were prune filling, with a triangular shaped dough, and I don't know how to make them. In some of the italian bakeries in New York, you can buy them. I love anything prune...in fact, i just finished a glass of prune juice, but mostly, I just like to eat them! I thought the part about the recipe was interesting, because after doing something so many times it becomes natural, you think that it was supposed to happen this way and kind of forgot about the learning process! (I cooked this same dinner and made this same sandwich a few times, and after the first two or three times, I did not need a book in front of me even though there were multiple steps!)
Someone also commented about measuring, and it's intresting when a cook goes from making sure that there's exactly 1 teaspoon of salt to being able to eye a cup of oil. My organic chemistry teacher always says that good organic chemist don't measure. I think it's kind of funny, but when you really think about it, the addition of the unlimiting reagent wouldn't change the amount of products
(This doesn't apply to general chemistry as much though... hmm.)
My grandmother was renowned for her fried chicken. Never wrote down the specifics of the reciepe either. MAny a realtive stood over her taking copious notes while she prepared the meal, yet no one was ever able to duplicate the results ~ ever. There are times when I smell the smell of that fried chicken and I'm reminded more of her, than of the actual feast itself.
I hope the tradition doesn't end with those tarts. ~ Greg

I loved it when your Aunt said she had no recipe!!!! My family was the same. My mom cooked by sight and feel. I her youngest sister, my Aunt Hazel who was also my godmother, was the best cook. She could make an egg taste like a gourmet feast!
Aren't scents so important to our psyce? The smell of roast beef will always bring a remembrance of Sunday when mom had put the roast in the oven before church and that is the first thing you smelled on arriving home.

Ohhhh Michel...Janine....those look absolutely wonderful! David asked me what they were - at first he thought they were pizza - he loves his pizza! When I told him the story behind the tarts he recited the old nursery rhyme The Queen of Hearts...
The Queen of Hearts she made some tarts all on a summer's day;
The Knave of Hearts he stole the tarts and took them clean away.
The King of Hearts called for the tarts and beat the Knave full sore
The Knave of Hearts brought back the tarts and
vowed he'd steal no more.
Looking at Janine's tarts...it would be very difficult not to want to steal those away! ;O)
I do hope that your daughters continue with the family tradition and beautiful secret. If not, adopt me!!! ;O) That recipe is something definitely to be treasured and not let it be forgotten especially the history behind the recipe. What a story that tart can tell!

Et impossible de trouver une plaque correspondante ! J'en suis réduite à faire tous les marchés aux puces de Berlin. Pourtant, je suis une furieuse tartophage car ma mère m'a appris à en faire de délicieuses qu'elle-même connaît de ma grand-mère etc...

My mouth is watering thinking about that delicious tart. It is so hard to find a good desert here in the U.S. anymore. Occasionally, I do try to bake a dessert, but I definitely do not have such a special recipe. Your family is blessed to have such warm traditions.

Michel, I live in Central Florida, and it is extremely dry here right now. The Life Group is a small group of people in our rather large church - there are many Life Groups that are part of the church - and mostly people who live in the same area. Some are elderly, some younger, in ours. The photographer I mentioned in my post is the youngest of the group. The idea is to have people who know and care about you, and to not be just an anonymous member of the church. In large churches that can happen too easily.
Btw, that tart looks wonderful! Thanks for telling us about it even if you won't give us the recipe - ha ha!

I just received your comments and to answer your questions. I did used to work with computer related things back in California and with the move here in the Netherlands earlier this month, I'm still trying to get settled in. Although, there might be a possibility that I can work from home (telecommute) with my former employer. We'll see how things unfold with that.

Magnifique'! Such traditions must always be passed down from generation to generation, like my herbs are being passed down to my daughter. But always a secret, of course! My daughter must learn cooking and medical herbs. But I don't want her to tell anyone but her daughter some day which ones do what.

Hi michel, thanks for the comment. You were the only 1 ( besides my girlfreind) who left a comment on my page. When I lived in England, I went to boulogne in france. I went under the channel tunel to calais. It was a real nice sunny day, I remember. No the mustang isn't a new one. Its a 1993 and they don't make that model anymore. I recently got an apprenticeship at the garage down the road from where i live. I love working on cars. My boss said that I could do up the mustang if I just pay for the parts, he would do it for free

I bet you were a serious little boy, with a hint of mischevious??? About the cheese, I have a bit of french in me too, I just never told you...my grandmother's first cousins were french...when we would go to Christine and Alfonse for dinner, they would always serve cheese after the main meal, before dessert....I could eliminate meat from my diet, but cheese, tomatoes and bread? No way...*grin* Thinking of you, I'm sure the tarts are finished by now

I don't mind at all that you asked about my job.
I work at a mom & pop-type hamburger place. We serve burgers that are fresh and hand-pressed daily and we have several varieties, such as bacon and cheddar burgers, avocado and jack burgers, ham and swiss burgers, ortega and jack burgers, etc. We've been really busy lately, and with only 3 of us working it really keeps us hopping! 
RYC: Thanks - I've met vets here that don't like to talk about their war experiences. It's horrible. You have a great Saturday.

Mon appartement et vieux et le matériel aussi, En fait, j'ai tellement souhaité habiter dans un de ces vieux appartements berlinois si spacieux avec des moulures au plafond et un parquet ancien, mais j'aurais préféré y trouver une cuisinière plus récente!

Oh my those tarts look truly delicious ! ! ! Even more delicious is the story that goes with them. It is very hard to give a recipe, when in reality it is a pinch of this and a pinch of that and a dash of this and a dash of that. They know how to do it and the ingredients that go into it, but it is all done by experience and to put it to paper it loses something in the translation a lot of time because it is done by the heart and the experience! MoMA on the other hand, is a museum like you guessed. It stands for Museum of Modern Art, it's in New York city and I really enjoy the art collection they have there!

Yes, it is Palm Sunday. I used to direct little children in what we called "The Beginner's Department". I would buy palm branches for each one and then have them go all through the church in a parade saying, "Hosanna! Hosanna! Hosanna to the king!" That was fun for everyone. The kids liked doing something different and the adults enjoyed seeing the children come through their classrooms.
For me, today, I have to work. Times have changed. We can still celebrate and remember in our hearts.
I did not know about this rhyme. Terri told me it is a very famous rhyme song to the children in the US.

Oui il y a beaucoup de parcs mais plein de monde ! On ne peut pas avoir de coins secrets ou ce genre de choses qu'on a à la campagne (ou enterrer un animal mort sans qu'un chien, un autre etc ne viennent creuser la terre remuée) mais bien sûr ce n'est pas Paris et c'est tant mieux, il y a mille fois plus d'arbres, plus d'oiseaux, des renards, des sangliers, plein de hérons, des lapins en liberté, des martres...dernièrement on a retrouvé un marcassin affolé coincé dans une cabine téléphonique ! Il a réussi à y entrer mais n'a pas pu en ressortir !

Yes, for some jobs work does not stop just because it is a holiday. I used to work the 8 until 5 job, Monday through Friday only. That was 14 years ago this April. Time flies. I was glad to see you on MSN. It lets me know a friend is just around the corner.
I understand this tradition. We have Norwegian Lefse as our tradition. My mom perfected the recipe but she willingly passes it on. It's hard to cook because the potatoes must be just right and it takes all day but they are so very good. My brothers and I always fight over them at holidays..... in a good way. Have a great day. RYC: Even if you look closely at JouJou's pictures, you can see the difference. Her hair is not so thick and fluffy. She does look better than she did before the "treatments" but we can tell the decline both in her appearance and her behavior. She is our sweet little white angel. We knew that someday we would lose her but we are still sad that she won't be with us....maybe a year at the most. The treatments keep her comfortable but...the kidneys will never get better. We cherish each moment. Which is a good way to feel about anyone that is near to our hearts.

It looks delicious. How great that Janine has found the right "touch" to make them the way your Aunt did. Its hard to perfect a recipe that way. We are still trying to copy Granny's fudge. The ingredients are all added in "pinches" and "dashes". Food makes happy memories.

My mom is baking some APPLE TARTS this coming weekend. I hope it'll taste yummy,
this will be her first time to bake tart.
What a delicious looking tart! Janine must be a wonderful cook to be able to discover again the taste.
We have some family recipes too, mostly for special dishes for special occasions such as the Chinese New Year. I think they have undergone some slight changes though.

J'en étais sûr! À la fois que c'était tout sauf une vulgaire tarte-machin, et qu'il y avait du pruneau et de la tradition là-dedans. Je peux juste m'imaginer l'effet en bouche, nous qui devons nous contenter de saliver d'un regard jaloux. Est-ce que c'est légal de nous aguicher comme ça avec ces photos? En tout cas, c'est pas moral.
