Beginning again .
English version below the pictures
Le potager the vegetable garden March 31, 2003 Photo . M. Fauquet
Le potager . The vegetable garden . March 5, 2007 Photo M. Fauquet
Here are above two pictures of my vegetable garden . The first has been taken on March 31, 2003 and the second , yesterday Monday , March 5, 2007 .
Always the same bare ground excepted for the leeks and parsley remaining from the previous year trough the winter .
But on the first picture taken at the end of March 2003 the seeds have already put in the ground .
See the green net protecting young onions , shallots and peas against the birds .
The leek and carrot seeds have been sown etc ... The potatoes have been planted since Saint Joseph Day ( March 19 ) .
Yesterday in looking at the vegetable garden ( photo2 ) I told myself at the same moment of the year I have the same show
and the same works to do in this vegetable garden for 21 years we live in Amiens .
It always is to begin again and again meanwhile the years pass without we are conscious of this .
But in three weeks like on the fist picture the apple trees will be bloomed and all will be ready for the glory of a new spring full of hope .
And we hope we will be able to sing as in 2003 with Henry Purcell ( 1659 – 1695 ) :
" Thus Nature rejoicing , has shown us the way ,
with innocent revels to welcome the day .
The tuneful grove , and the talking rill ,
the laughing vale , replying hill ,
with charming harmony unite ,
this happy season to invite "
( excerpt of the Ode for the Birthday of Queen Mary , 1694 . )

You have a huge garden and a lot of work every year. You must have a strong back, as I know you spend many hours every week tending a garden like this. I look forward to garden pictures all season, I hope to see all your wonderful vegetables! Do you cook, Michel, or does Janine do all the cooking?
Oh no, Jack Bauer isn't my hero. I just enjoy the show because it is a fun escape from reality for awhile, full of action. But heroes are real people who do exceptional things.
Yes, I'll bet Janine is an excellent cook with so many wonderful, fresh veggies and herbs at her disposal. Do you plant the garden the same every year?
So pretty! And exciting to know soon it will be growing like crazy. Maybe someday I'll have a garden, for now I just bum off of everyone who plants one all summer. Free, homegrown veggies are the best!
Very big garden means a lot of work, but what is work if it is done with love? It is no work but joy, and the rewards of the flowers and of the fruit will be great.
It is amazing to see how quick nature changes from barren to full of live.
Thanks for this lesson.
Ryc: About baby simon playing piano, I am not sure as spiders don't have ears, but they say can they ear sounds with the hair that are in their legs. I wonder if they ear music with their legs. She should play the violin or the harp or just a web.

that is a huge garden! Soon it will be full of blooms and growth and I can't wait to see the pictures
I can tell that you love having a garden. My son has a garden every year, but it's not near as large as yours looks to be. There's just nothing quite like garden-fresh produce, and doubly so when it comes out of one's own garden!
the constants of our life give us our peace within. I believe. I love the birthday ode!
I hope that we are not conscious of the years passing because we are busy living it! :O) I love your garden and the pictures of years ago to today! How I would love to live close by and learn from your gardening expertise as well as Janine's expertise in cooking all the things you two grow! I can't wait to see more pictures and how the landscape changes!
xoxo Cat
Wonderful! I thought those were leeks. I have never seen leeks grown here. Climate is probably too warm. Spring is near, hoorah!
Merveilleux !
OH! It is beautiful, The first is such a nice begining and the second is so full of potential. It just makes me think of all the wonderful goodies to plant and the tasty things you will be able to eat.
Everything here is still covered in snow. I know that in three more weeks it will be gone and muddy and getting ready for spring but I'm feeling a little impatient for it. I can't wait to see a picture of your garden in its full splendor.
Thanks for sharing. (hug) Ang
I wonder why we don't grow leeks in my part of the world. I wonder if they are like the ramps that grow to the east of us. They have a ramp festival every year. I've never been but maybe I should.
I've bought lettuce, spinich and cantelope seeds so far.
Welcome (early) Spring.
Having the chance to be part of your life somehow is also a way of renewing the spitit. Thanks again for sharing, Michel.
Amitié,
Sheila
Mmm. I'm hungry for some fresh vegetable soup!!
<3,
Aubrey
We had a garden when I was growing up and so enjoyed going out a few minutes before dinner to pick what we wanted for that meal. And it was s-o-o good! Growing my own has not been possible recently but I look forward to your pictures as you post them....Dorrice
Michel you have quite a big vegetable garden! It would be exciting waiting for the first shoots of growth to come through. I remember this joy with the vegie gardens my father used to create. I'll bet your vegetables taste absolutely delicious!!
Your birthday is approaching soon. I haven't forgotten.
I always love the springtime. New life is a beautiful thing. Your garden will be marvelous soon.
You have a very nice garden space and I am so happy to know that you and Janine are excited with it. You are very fortunate to have a garden and all that it gives.
It is amazing how the time passes so quickly. Our lives continue the same pattern every 365 days.
I have been praying for your daughter in law.
Spring is almost here, but first we have to go through the rough fight with the season change
You always plant a large garden Michel. My parent's did the same. It is nice when everything starts to grow fills you with pride and such wonderful rewards for the hard work. I like tomatoe's from the garden and potatoes but not green pepper that I but from the grocery store, I find green pepper bitter from the garden. I love cucumber's. We shall have to call you Farmer Michel
I know you have a birthday very soon not hard to remember as we share the same birthday month. Take care my friend
Shirley
Its great to see new buds growing already in your garden. Here the weather is different every day at the moment , today it was warm yesterday it was cold.
You are a natural Farmer at heart. Love of the land and the fruit it yields. Farmers are the Stewards of the land and as such, it is their task to leave the land better than when they found it. Each generation improves upon the last. I would say you are a success.
It's amazing how fast spring comes! Your trees are beautiful.
Kirsten
Thank you Michel. Reading your blog today has given me a little bit of joy, thinking of new beginnings :)
Regarding your comment, I do have a job now, but I am unhappy at it, not merely bored or dissatisfied. So I have to find a new one. Meanwhile the current one pays the rent!
cheers,
Caroline
parsley though the winter!? who knew! thanks for sharing. your garden is huge!
Can't wait to see all you harvest from this vast garden. I don't have one here in Florida - much too hard to grow any vegetables outside for most of the year. I grew up on a farm and loved gardening. Thanks for sharing all your great thoughts and pictures.
I always enjoy your pictures.
You have truly captured the meaning of life. Each year we celebrate the Seasons for their gifts and those who plant the seeds reap miracles. You are lucky that you have weather to grow your beauties. We have too much fog, small sun and little warmth...but the flowers grow and that is our beauties
Praying for your DIL...Kemo is terrible but it works and we want her to the flower that will bloom again soon
It is a sight for sore eyes! It definitely is not what I am seeing here in Michigan. We continue with the snow and the below freezing temperatures (-10) tonight. It is hard to even summon up what all that green means. I should be trimming my blueberry bushes, but I can't even get to them!
It makes me happy to know that someone is outside preparing the soil. Take care. - Rachel
Love the contrast of the two pictures. A tangible bit of evidence that Spring really is on the move! And what a difference just three weeks can make this time of year!
I sowed most of the sweet pepper (15)varieties today,I did the hot pepperson Sat(18 varieties)
and that is a beautiful garden Michael!!
Those look like either lillies or leeks, I'm not sure which! You not only make a beautiful life for your family, but you make each of us feel special here, too. I am lucky enough to feel it, too! Thank you, dear Michel, for your endearing comments! Love you...don't work too hard, be careful of your back! Lowie
You must be living on the happiest plot of ground on earth.
Your garden is so very beautiful. And the apple trees in blossom. Just a little bit of heaven, I think. Do you and Janine both work in the garden.
I think it's working out there in nature, in partnership with God that keeps you so young. And the food prepared from such fresh ingredients!. Besides parsley, what other herbs do you have? Do you have marjoram? oregano, rosemary, sage, basil? Do you grow lavender.? What about tomatoes.? I think you have inspired me to get out and plant a garden.
My mother always gardened and felt when she could no longer garden, she would be ready to "go". She finally had to stop when she was 88.
How is your daughter in law?
God Bless,
Francoise
j'aime les photos de votre potager!
In 1971 I was a young widow whose children were no longer home. I was lonely and did not like my job. My late husband had been in a garden club and my lawn was full of flowers. With the help of a neighbor I learned to care for them. That summer I would come home from work, change to old clothes, and work in the flowers. My father was so proud of me! He said I had never looked so healthy. Those flowers and that lawn kept me alive. This is our gift from Him, is it not?
what a fabulously large garden you have! there is nothing to compare with fresh vegitables that have been grown with love! you will never find them at the grocery store!!! i hope you have a very excellent growing season this year, michel!
wow! you have a large garden!!! fun!
someday we'll have a house and i can't wait to grow stuff, too!!
i will grow veggies and herbs!!! did you see my blog where i caught pictures of seeds? i thought of you!!!
we've been having lovely weather here! hope you are too!!! love
angela
Oh Michel! What a lovely garden! And how precious you have tended that DARK RICH SOIL for so many years. It is glorious to witness that some things ever changing ... really never do change! I rejoice with you in the coming of Spring!
I am so jealous of how much space you have. I have to grow most of my things in pots. I have a lot but not nearly this much space. I would use it all too as I grew up on a farm and I love growing my own vegetables and fruits and herbs.
i am always amazed at how you have patience for a garden. i cannot imagine the care you put into it.
Michel...maybe you can share with us the picture of the tart you mentioned....it sounds delicious! :O) Oh to be a fly on the wall in your kitchen when Janine is busy baking for you and family!
Your garden reminds me so much of my Uncle's garden. He too maximized the space and nothing was wasted! He did a lot of complimentary plantings - where one plant works with another or can use another after growth. He, like his father (my grandfather), knew his flora and fauna - a lost art these days. He knew which side of a tree a vine would grow or which part of the root to place in and in which direction to give the plant it's best chances for growing...all of these things we have lost due to...convenience? I wish I had taken the time to learn from my Uncle and grandparents while I had the chance. Now...it is up to us to learn all that we can...while we can so that we can pass it down to our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. :O) I fear that they face even more distractions than we did at their ages and they will become far too dependent on what is given to them whether it be good, bad or otherwise.
My little break time is over and I am heading back in to teach Ancient History and Science! :O)
Love to you both!
xoxo Cat
I really do admire your work as a gardener ----I too have a large garden but long ago I decided it was to be a shrub border surrounding a single large lawn---how right I was for the never ending rain this year has meant even the lawn has not been mowed for a month. Each to his own.
Regards Ron
Nice garden...had one about the same size in Virginia...as a kid. Have not been to the garden store yet, but did get my back patio cleaned out fairly well.
I don't know where you get the energy from Michel ! Just thinking about tackling so large a plot tires me out . You must be Xanga's number one gardener.
As Julie said the weather here is different every day, very confusing esp. for the poor flowers that are blooming now.
Marie PS Still praying.
Michel...Mimi's(leayellowrose) little son has a brain tumor...please keep him in your prayers...He is being operated on Friday....
God bless you and Janine and forgive me for not commenting on your wonderful garden!(((HUGS)
I know you are just getting so excited about working in your garden, Michel. Your grass is so green already. You must have early springs there in Amiens. And another growing season begins, leading to a bountiful harvest in autumn. Such satisfaction it must give you. We have almost 2 feet of snow still on the ground, and much higher banks where the snow was removed. Our temperatures are still below freezing. I think it will be a long time until we see green grass!
cher Michel,

http://www.chant.ch/index.php/index.php/fr/bovet-joseph-279.htm

Time for planting again. Winter weather this year colder and longer in my locale. Past three years really mild temps and 2 or 3 days of snow that quickly melted.
It is life renewing itself, the soul renewing its chosen responsibility to it's host (you!) and the beautiful way to nourish the body temple....I would love to touch the soil of Michel's garden someday!
I have your DIL on my mind and in my prayers. She is still young and may God heal her completely.
Love,
Francoise.
Your garden is so big! Somehow I never realized it before in your other photographs. You must be able to grow all of the vegetables your household can use. It has been a long time since I had a big garden. At that time we lived on a small (30 acre) farm in the Finger Lake region of New York state. Now my garden is only a postage stamp. It is too soon for another week or two to do very much in the garden here. The ground is just beginning to thaw. The soil here is mostly clay with a great deal of shale in it. I must again work in as much organic material as possible to improve it if I want to grow any produce.
I lke the ode very much. It is a beautiful expression of the joy we have as spring approaches.
As ever, Carol Suzanne
Beautiful Garden space. You are lucky to have such land. I love gardening and plants, they are such a bond with the earth energy.
Bisous tres tres fort
Mimi
Wow. That is a very big garden. U did all this work by yourself? That is amazing. so, what else tdid u plant except for onions, peas, and carrots that u mentioned?
P.S. when they all come out, I'm I going to get some? hehehhhehehehehe
I think our birthdays are the same day (the 12th) so Happy birthday to you dear friend!
Lovely pics of your garden. It is time for us to plant soon, too - I will be doing some herbs like peppermint, spearmint, chamomile and maybe lavender for the soaps I make. (plus there is nothing like sweet iced tea with fresh mint in it!!) Keep us posted on the fruits of your labor!!
Love, Aimee
Hi Dear Michel! RYC: yes, daddio died at 65, he had a heart attack on the tennis court in La Jolla, CA...he smoked two packs a day, but never was sick with anything, it seemed...so it was a shock. Yes, he was the italian side, his parents born in Italy...he was an interesting man...and very smart...I resemble his side of the family, not my mom...my sis looks just like my mom! Tomorrow is spring break from school, I am looking forward to just relaxing, the weather has gotten so nice these days...sunny and 65. Miss you! Luv, Lowie
Did you have a parent die young, too...dear Michel?? I cannot imagine life without my mom, she is so awesome...I adore every minute we are together!
It is amazing what a difference a few short weeks makes in nature. I'm ready to see some leaves on our trees! I always feel so much better when things start getting green in the Spring!
What a beautiful garden! It's a big job, but I hope you find the good food to be worth the trouble. It is what we were meant to do.
I would love to hear the music that goes with the poetry!
Here is another poem your garden reminded me of. It's just a simple little one that people put on signs in their gardens. Still, looking at your garden makes the same poem come to our minds:
"The Kiss of the Sun for Pardon
The song of the birds for Mirth.
One is nearer God's heart in a garden
Than any place else on earth."
Thank you for sharing your garden, Michel!
Joy
What a huge garden. I only have a little garden but plenty for just me. Judi
your garden is such a big one!! i bet you are a master gardener!! i look forward to seeing all the crops you grow in it! and thank you for your kind words of encouragement about my purses... i hope i do well tomorrow!!
That's what I love so much about spring - the hope that blooms with the first flowers of the season. Nothing is more beautiful than the sight of those tiny green shoots fighting their way up through the mire to the fresh air and sunshine of the year's new beginning. I envy you your garden, Michel. I miss the communion with nature and the feeling of the cool earth in my hands. Apartment living is for birds and bunnies! Take care, my friend.
I like this time of the year - plants beginning to grow. -love the pictures. RYC: I like the study of people and how circumstances affect them. The Lincolns fascinate me because of what was going on at the time.
Your garden looks wonderful - I can smell the fresh vegetables (or the soil they are in, anyway) already.
And the Salle de Croisades I mentioned - I'm pretty sure the one mentioned in the Kingdom of Heaven research was the one in the Versailles, though I'd have to check the discs.
Merci beaucoup!
Quelle beau jardin... chanceux!
I wish for you a bountiful garden for the upcoming season, Michel!
Sorry I haven't posted recently - - I've just not been in the mood, somewhat lazy of me I suppose.....
Have a super weekend, mon ami!
RYC...No, Michel, the coreopsis has not bloomed yet. As I mentioned in my post, "I took the picture - last year during the hottest part of the summer." I planted 15 of them yesterday, and showed the picture of last years only so people could see what they look like. I live in Oklahoma. Our coreopsis will not bloom until probably May.
PS... your garden looks so neat and well cared for. I loved the two pictures taken years apart of the same garden.
"Such is the splendour of things still to come."
You cannot beat home grown fruit and veg.
Does your wife can the vegetables or do you freeze them? Judi
Regarding your comment: My Dad said he would not have to have any kind of kemo or treatment. Since they tested as they took it out and then took some more and tested to make sure it was all gone. Thank you for caring.
P.S. I saw a sign saying: Leeks... in the grocery store yesterday! But they were all gone.
wow, spring comes earlier in France. i am soo jealous~!
~janny
Michel, I am so sorry to be so slow to answer your comment, I am teaching school now and so busy with lesson plans and such, Xanga and my friends have been neglected, forgive me, please?
I am so sorry to hear about your daughter-in-law but hope for the best outcome. My prayers for her and your family. Congratulations on your wedding anniversary, it is so sweet to know that you still see Janine as your young bride, I hope my husband sees me that way, too. Our 20th is coming up, I was not a so young bride but this was my 2nd, and sorry to not have any children of our own, just raised together my Ryan. Looking forward to our grandchildren some day. I am also getting ready to plant my garden, I will have tomato, squash, corn and many different flowers. Your dirt looks so rich.....we live in partly desert, so our dirt is not naturally very dark, we have to add, and add, and add....and sometimes we aren't very successful but it never stops me. I am a country girl at heart and I always have to be growing something.
Thank you for the kind attention you show me, you are a remarkable friend!! Bless you and your family.
Cathy
Haha
~Anne
I love reading French and even had a conversation with myself in French on my drive back home to my apartment tonight. I read your post in French, scrolling down when I couldn't figure out a word. I did have to confirm that I was reading "peas against the birds," as I am unfamiliar with the term. I love reading about your garden, though. Peace and joy to you!
What a joyful garden you grow* I have been in Canada..( creeping ever closer to Breton..smiles..my friend there..sent a fresh batch of photographs of his garden too* Such abundance of vegitables and fruits and colorful flowers..I finally sent his bd/ christmas present in the post two weeks ago..I feel bad I am so slow at such things..( his bd was in Sept)..He is fixing up his seven roof's and has plans for a guest suite ..I would be quite happy in the nearest hotel..My endurance is not yet up to all the walking that a visit would require...I have no excuses....none..should have been ready to run a marathon by now..Your posts bring France to us all ....Thank you for your most generous sharing..* ((Wings))
Please let me know about your daughter ( in law)?I put her on the prayer list at RoseColoredWings...( if that is not alright please let me know)...It is my prayer that life is going well for all ..there..however pleases know I hold you all in prayer..It is a might battle...she engaged...May God's blessings pour out upon her and her family....( You too:)
PapaNorm ( in the US only on xanga a short time died recently I just found out from soonaquiters site..He will be greatly missed...Bon Jour Michele..thank you for befriending me..on Wings of Desire* You are an incredible man..((Wings))
Hey sweety have a wonderful week end and God Bless .

I admire your persistence. Of course, gardening is a joy and anyone who has seen anything grow would know how hard it is to stop planting! I am growing a succulent in a jar of water here in my tiny room at school. But I can't wait to have a house of my own so I can grow all sorts of wonderful plants.
RYC: "d4unk" is how I typed "drunk" when I was drunk.
yum i can just see it now.Lovley vegetables growing and cooking them.
Great pictures! This looks almost identical to my grandmother's garden. I'm having a flood of memories.
hi cher michel, i want to see all the stuff you grow!!! we went back out to the park today and i had some exercise out there! it's gorgeous!!! it sounds funny that london's sunny and gorgeous, doesn't it? hehehe
i even made nice chocolate chip cookies today!! yummy! ok, gotta make some spinach dip now, so you have a great weekend with janine!!
angela
Yay, the start of this year's garden! Good luck to you both!!
Ah, the birds want their share of the bounty. Hopefully they will content themselves with the snails and bugs that also are sharing the harvest. It is not enough sometimes to set out pans of beer to attract the slugs and snails, hopefully you can contain some of the most terrible insects that want to share your vegetables.
I was doing some gardening yesterday and it was getting rid of the grasses was the main chore. Some of the grass seeds like wild oats and rip gut grass have seeds that stick into your socks. Fortunately they were not ripe and did not attack my socks....
ryc: I do find quite a bit of happiness within, but my moods can run the gamut of emotions! Much love to you!!
Isn't it a wonderful feeling to know that spring is near and it's time for planting!? Your garden looks beautiful. My garlic and shallots are up. I don't think the elephant garlic survived the planting. A friend from work gave it to me.
Looking forward to a plentiful harvest!
Lovely garden...thanks for sharing the pics.
Merci pour tes voeux pour ma petite Boutique online. Ton jardin semble pret a produire again!
RYC: Thank you.
I was the oldest of a family of six also. And at one point, my Aunt and Uncle died and we took in 7 of our cousins. The Brady Bunch we were NOT. More like the Walton's. Ha! Good night, Jim Bob...
What a wonderful garden spot. It looks quite large enough to turn out some really fine veggies for the summer. My favorites are tomatoes, onions, green peppers and potatoes. I love fresh corn, greenbeans and cabbage also. Actually there isn't a lot of veggies I don't care for.
I will be sure to let Bunny know there is a comment waiting for her. I know she was very happy to send to your DIL. Bunny has a huge heart and a very giving nature. She was hoping it would bring a smile and give her a little bit to play with.
Regards,

Presumptions of me to think the whole world watched an American show called the Waltons. Sorry about that. "The Waltons" was on T.V. in the early 70's and it depicted the life and trials of a 1930's mountain family. One of the characters was named James Robert 'Jim Bob' Walton. He also had a brother named "John Boy".
The show would always end with the family retiring for the night and all that the viewers could see was the home from afar and hear everyone saying 'good night' to everyone. Thus, "Good night Jim Bob."
I admire large families, but now- a -days it can be a financial crisis to have 6 kids. We were poor growing up, but never did without the important stuff, love and great parents.
Bonjour Michel,
Quel magnifique potager!
What a wonderful pair of pictures!! That's wonderful to see. I envy you your garden. Having access to fresh vegetables and herbs would be a good thing over the summer!! I would love to have a garden like that--you could definitely lose yourself in the working of it.
Have a wonderful day!!
Blessings!
Marguerite
Found on from your Multiply site that today is your birthday. So, here's wishing you a happy and blessed birthday, filled with all things good and beautiful.
Happy Birthday, Michel!
I am going to find that child that needs to learn to read this week. I am going to buy some kids some books and read a story to a child who does not get one every night. Love to you Michel, Judi
We've been working on a garden in our new home's yard. We try to have a garden whereever we move, but it's so exhausting starting the ground preparation process every year. This new yard is tired, meaning it is barren of the nutrients necessary to produce healthy plants, so we have to amend it with compose from the local dump. We are fortunate that our city implemented a recycling program where residents put their yardwaste curbside, it is picked up by the city who composts it and then sells it back to residents (isn't that funny?!). We see the rediculousness of this, so we compost our own yardwaste in back, but we will not have enough compost quickly enough for the various flower beds around the house and the garden. So we'll buy.
When I read your words about the same process annually in the garden, at first, I felt exhausted just thinking about what that meant. But I think there's a spiritual, soul soothing aspect of the yearly cycles we participate in. I remind myself of how good it feels to grow something. But I do prefer perenials to annuals. I let my husband sow the seeds!
Bonne anniversaire, Michel!
I loved your garden and that poem I would like to be able to write like that, simple yet has lasted the time. I guess you have to write in the era you are in ,as all the old poetry seems different to some of this modern stuff. I like some of now, I can't think of his name, he was an Irish man and part of one says "Go gently into this dark night or evening " my immediate memory isn't so good as my long term Love Marjie no. 100 plus in answering.
Thought of it Dylan Thomas

I love the expansive view of the garden going into the distance. It shows promise of so many possibilities.
It looks like a wonderful start. Happy birthday as well Michel...
Happy Birthday!
I am starting to work on the garden this year too. Originally my sister just planted a few things here and there but now I'd like to do more with it... Just seeing your photos and reading your entry is an inspiration. Thank you.
The earth looks rich and lush. I bet your vegetables are incredible...do you do organic gardening or do you use pesticides? Dad has the best asparagus patch every year, yummy stuff.
Love, Brenda
