Anniversaires et bougies
Birthdays and candles
English version after the French texts .
I always have been struck by the pleasure people get to blow out their birthday cake candles . As the photos below show it , this is the same pleasure for old people as very young children .
The candles are just lighted you already have to put out the flames …. and in only one time if possible ! I remember when I turned 67 a choir that I direct offered to me a birthday cake with 67 candles !!! It was wonderful and I enjoyed to stare this bright light but one asks me almost immediately to blow and the beautiful flames disappeared !
During a long time I wondered what was the meaning of this : light candles and as soon as blow out them ? Wouldn ' t light be a symbol of life ? I understood recently the symbol of life was not in the light but in the blow . To be able to blow shows you are perfectly alive and of course you are happy of that . We blow , we breath . This is the blow that shows life . Life is in the blow , the blow gives life and it put in our yes the sparks of life .
It ' s amazing I needed so long to realize this obviousness ! !

Symbolique .
You will notice the choice made to picture people being blowing . Symbolic .

That is perfect. I love the pictures and everyone does look so alive as they blowout the candles. "To be able to blow shows you are perfectly alive" this is it in a nutshell, you are our philospher Michel.
I did not know how blowing out the candles is so symbolic! Thank you for sharing this. And for showing so many family members who are so full of life! Blessings to you and to all of them. ~ Paloma
93!!
Michel, your life is so rich. I'm so glad to have found this little spot that reminds me of life's great possibilities.
Bonjour, Michel!
I have not had a true birthday cake with candles in quite a long time. This past birthday(my 21st) I did not even have a birthday cake at all. I don't like cake, but I do love getting to blow out the candles. But I also think that candle flames are beautiful, and if not careful, I get lost in them.
It is great that Janine still has her father and at the age of 93 I am sure that he has led quite a life!
I hope you have a great rest of the week, my friend. God bless.
Thank you for that story..and at the right time too! Thursday is my birthday and I was feeling a little depressed at turning 55...but I never realized how much life is left!!!!!! I will remember this when I blow out my candles!!!!!!!
Have a great week and God bless you and Janine(((HUGS)))
J'aime les anniversaires!
I love it Michel!
Have a blessed day!
Michele
"...le symbole de vie n ' était pas dans la lumière mais dans le souffle." I never looked at the tradition of blowing candles that way, Michel. But it makes perfect sense especially when I think back to what the Bible says about the creation of man according to the Bible: "L'Éternel Dieu forma l'homme de la poussière de la terre, il souffla dans ses narines un souffle de vie et l'homme devint un être vivant." (Genesis 1:7)
J'aime les gateaux!

Hi, Michel. Yes, we already have thought of the possibility of the word play on my name. Amy has a framed "calligraphy" (fancy lettering) that we use that way, and I think we have it hanging on the wall by my side of the bed, "Rich is who you have beside you." haha.
Nice photos! Each time I come to your site and see the excellent photos of your life in France, it's like a micro vacation for me. Thank you!
I agree with the above comment...your life is so very rich Michel!
I so enjoy your pictures and comments and thoughtful words!

i am home from the Chrysalis flight and we were given the breath of Life this weekend.....20 young ladies came closer to their relationship with Christ and it was totally amazing for met to watch the Holy Spirit move. i love this post. melinda
I have heard that when you make a wish and then blow out the candles the smoke is supposed to carry your wish to heaven. Those are great pictures!
Great photos Michael and a fun topic. I never could get a lot of candles out in a single blow.
Have a super week.
awesome pics
School stated today so that should be interesting
keep updating
i really enjoy reading it
I enjoyed this, Michel. As always the children are adorable and you have given me much to think about regarding the symbolism behind blowing out birthday candles. Just this Saturday we attended a birthday party for Neil's uncle, who is in his 80's I think, and Katie was much impressed with his ability to blow out all the candles with one breath. It usually takes her several tries! Thank you for sharing your family photos, perhaps I will blog again soon and get Neil to post some pictures for me!
I never thought of it that way...but now I will...always. Thank you! I love the symbolic photos.
I had never thought about the blowing out being symbolic - what an interesting thought. Your photos remind me of the " seven ages of man " ( Shakespeare ) OR women
I don't think there would be a cake big enough for candles at my next birthday nor would I have enough "wind " to blow them out.
Marie
I love the pictures. Thank you. I agree with the commentor above, you are quite the philospher!
Your photographs are terrific as was the story. I never thought about the blowing out of candles as being symbolic of life but I will from now on! Thank you my friend for again opening my mind and my spirit!
Love,
Debbie
Thanks for your comments on the coffee table.
ryc for Johns_other_site: I have only three kids but I called myself a kid yesterday in a kidding sort of way.
What joy on everyone blowing out their birthday candles
. I use to love it when I was little knowing that I would have a extra candle to blow out on my birthday cake
. Now I dread the adding of that candle and also the fact that there is not a big cake with enough room to putting on all my candles on
. After all this time I did not realise that we had a grandson that shared the same name , silly me
that was a celebration. a wonderful party full of cake and light and love! i love coming over here to visit!
Your family looks like a happy and healthy one. Take care of all of them. And yes you can see the delight in their faces as they blow out their candles. God Bless Them All.
awww... how precious
)
and if i live to be 93, i want a cake with 93 candles on it~!
thanks for sharing, Michel.
~janny
lovely, wonderful family photos.... that show the love and laughter and happiness!! you are truly blessed!
Bet Janine's dad was happy he didn't have to blow out 93 candle's. I have had 2 birthday cakes in my life time none with more than one candle with my asthma I doubt I could blow out more than one, I have failed 2 breathing test in the past year not good! No Michel God is not to blame for the way this planet has turned that is mankinds fault for falling prey to evil and sin. God only gives us love and goodness. Have to run along and get ready for work.
Shirley
You know, I never knew the symbolism of the blowing out the candles. It is interesting.
I'd never thought blowing birthday candles, as having a symbolic meaning!
I've always admired your wonderful observations on life, Michel. The photos you've posted of your family are beautiful! Janine's father looks terrific for a man of 93 years of age.
Lovely post, as usual!
It is my birthday on Sunday - I have to be careful and not eat too much cake.
Birthdays are great fun.
Wonderful perspective my friend. I hope I'm still able to blow out my candles when I'm 100!
DG
Salut!
Merci! Ciao.
I also enjoyed your pictures! The kids really do enjoy blowing out the candles, and the older ones have a hard time resisteing "helping" the younger ones!
I remember accidentally catching my long hair on fire one year as I leaned over the candles to blow them out. Luckily, it was just a few strands and no real damage, but it was a little scary.
All those beautiful cakes look pretty tasty!
You have a great perspective on the symbolism of birthday candles. Very nice.
very good sequence of pics. i like how you have spanned all age groups. a common theme to all the pictures is its clear whose birthday it is. they all look like they own the cake. as it should be!
What wonderful pictures and such joy on these faces. I love this entry, Judi
Wow. Cakes in France are so cute and pretty. In America they are so standardized and boring.
It's good to see that your country enjoys blowing candles as much as ours. I just got to blow mine out the other week. I am not telling you what I wished for.
What a lovely post! May you have many, many, many years of happy blowing.
PS: Visit my site and you can see what I do with my horses (as you had asked)
Happy trails!
C'est vrai. Le joie d'être vivant, non?
What a happy thought, Michel - to be able to blow out the candles. A different way of looking at things. I did not put candles on my cake - I honestly didn't even think about doing it! No sense in starting a forest fire, I guess! Take care, my friend! - Rachel
It is symbolic, and I love the cakes. They look a little bit different than the ones we have here.
The weather in Texas is cold today, too, but I doubt as cold as France weather.
I'll post the pictures in my next entry. Right now I just have one of my cat.
I never understand the birthday candle blowing myself but I have t oadmit that people love it.
Bien à toi.

Ah, but dear Michel, life goes on, even when the body can no longer blow out the candles. You see, ceremonies are only outward signs of life. Your inner self does need the light, but the true light, which is not of fire.
thats a lot of ppl!!! usually we just have one candle or a few because the cake shop only gives u a few.. and if u have too many the wax drips!!
Answer to Mystical2 : Terri , I agree with what you write about LiGHT but blow ( or breath ) also is symbolic of life . The breath gives life , of course and this symbol is very old .. . Please read what is written in Genesis 2 : " the LORD God formed the man [e] from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. "
Thank you for your comment that completes my statement
Loved the photos, when we blow out the candles we also make a wish and if you never tell what it was you wished for it is supposed to come true, I am still waiting
Take care
Angela
the cakes looks so delicious!
At my mother's 100th birthday party, a special tiny cake was brought to my mother. It had only one candle on it. My great nephew had "composed" a little song for all of us to sing to Mother telling her to "blow out the candle." Her face was alight with happiness as she blew out that one candle. And, yes, it confirmed again that she is not just alive in body, but also in spirit.

What a wonderful post. Considering your observation that being able to blow proves you're alive, I wonder what my last lung capacity test says about me. Am I only 36% alive? Dear me, I'll surely have to work on making that better:) Your entry was a wonderful way to start my day.
oh that's nice picture with having someone's birthday... you have a beautiful famil you have here...
Michel, I've been trying out diffferent layouts. I didn't like the one I had up either. It felt... claustrophobic. So, I changed it.
I am lucky to be one of the few people in the world to find true love and God-given happiness.
I learned some French here and there and then took some classes in high school and college. I loved it and I continue to read French books when I find time. I don't think my speaking abilities are so good, since I stopped practicing. But I love reading your posts in French. Thank you for that!
That's amazing...I didn't realize that either. I always thought of the lighting of the candles as meaning we are about to begin a new year and blowing out the candles meant that a year was coming to an end. I like your meaning much better! I'll have to let my niece know as my great niece will be celebrating her first birthday on Friday. Can you believe it's been a year? I can't and I just found out she started walking last week! How wonderful is that?
Thanks for sharing Michel as always. Your wisdom is a gift to us all.
in answer to your question about eating popcorn at the movies... YES! It's been an American tradition for as long as I can remember... You can purchase bags of popcorn and soft drinks (Coke, Dr. Pepper, etc.) from the snack bar. The cost of a bag of popcorn and a soft drink is more than the price of the ticket to get into the show... It's a rip-off. And I usually do no buy any type of refreshment while at the show... but I splurged this time!
It's great to celebrate
What beautiful children!!! Happy Birthday/Joyeux Anniversaire to all!
Wonderful photos and thoughts about life.
You know I have always wondered about that. Thanks for answering a much wondered question. lol Love your pictures as always. Also so love reading you and learning new things. Just wonderful ! ! ! ! Great pictures and stories! Barbara has now posted her pictures. She had problems getting them in, so I helped her. Many more than I had. Have a great day and a wonderful tomorrow ! ! ! Much love and many hugs ! ! ! Sleep with the angels and wake up fully rested and ready for a brand new day ! ! !
On my fortieth birthday, my younger siblings put all 40 candles on the cake--and then, after much of it had been eaten, and one brother came in late, they insisted on squeezing all the candles back on the little piece that had been left for him, and lighting them again. It was such fun, and we thought 40 was SO MANY candles! Times have certainly changed as we've gotten older and grayer!
Yes--the breath of life. I hadn't thought of that. It is so charming the way the children help the little ones--they are so beautiful. And I congratulate Janine's father on keeping his youthful heart.
ryc on Marie's site-I picture you as an island of calm on every occasion. I know that is not an easy facade to keep up, but I'm sure we, and all who are near you, are blessed by you.
M a g n i f i q u e cher Michel et Janine !

Your pictures are always so beautiful. I love knowing that you have such an amazing life and family. Kisses, Kate
I love seeing pictures of your family Michel. God Bless!
Beautiful pictures!
Lots of lovely children. No kidding they are precious.
comment dit'on "rosy cheeks" en francais? heh
Thanks for the hints on the painting. I appreciate it. Yes when we give just to be giving because it is what we do is when things come back to us ten fold. Judi
No doubt... you're amazing..You reflect upon simple things with so much depth..You take a simple thing such as "blowing out candles" and make it something to reflect upon!!
...and what a thought!!!
Magnifico!!
Thank you for being...Michel!
A hug to you and Janine,
Lucy
...and your pictures ARE beautiful...
more hugs..
What a clever and fascinating group of pictures. Sharing happy moments like celebrating another year! The 93 year old looks just as delighted about another birthday as the children. "Bougies" What a wonderful word. Sounds like a lot more fun than "candles"
Love,
Francoise.
ryc
I put in the wooden statues according to your idea. I haven't done the exotice vases, yet.
ryc: Aw!
Vous etes trop aimable! Merci.
Hello Michel! Sorry I havent been on for a while, read my post on my blog. Anyways, Did you have a good new year?
-Maria
Ah the wonder of the generations of Fauquet's all blowing in celebration of life
Wonderful and what an album they make
Love to you and Janine and the whole family!
What a lovely set of pictures and the text so prolific!!! I loved the picture of Janine's father. He seems well pleased!! Your cakes are much different than the cakes here in the US. They are much better, I think!!!!
Hi There my friend, great pics... and I think of you next time I blow out candles!
TC and hugs!
You have such a beautfiul family!!! What a fun time! Thanks for sending me the
link to BlondeCowgirl's blog entry. That would be cool to do something like that!
How is your new year going? Do you and Janine have lots of travels planned for this year?
ryc
I'm not really sure about your meaning. You want the statue to fit on top of the table?
btw
How did you know what a commenter would write after you did? Can you predict the future? This is amazing!
I love birthdays...... Because yes you are celabrating the day a new life came into this world. What kind of cakes are those? One looked like it was made out of lady fingers. Well God Bless!
I will need 44 candles on my cake this year. I don't think I have enough breath to blow out that many candles!
Thank you so much for remembering my great niece's birthday! My mom called and sang Happy Birthday to her and my niece said she wasn't paying any attention so my said, "You could have lied to me at least!" She then told her well she did look at the phone and smile! haha!!! My family is so funny!! What was even funnier was my mom calling me around 9am at work in a panic because she couldn't get through to the Caymans to sing to her. I said we'll it's only 9am you've got ALL DAY! Isn't that just the funniest? Have a great weekend Michel!!! GO PANTHERS!!!!
that is an awesome post.
Michel~
The pleasures experienced by both young and old are best when experienced whole-heartedly and not just going through the motions. Enjoy every moment of your life whole-heartedly.

We just had Mom's birthday on Friday the 13th. As always your pictures are lovely and those grandchildren of yours are just gorgeous. Must be something in the genes or the water in France huh? Take care.
Love, Brenda
Sheryl
PS: Please bear with me as I try to communicate in French and feel free to correct me as needed.
I had wondered about the meaning of the candles, its symbolism is very interesting. You have a wonderful family Michel. Your question, Yes my grandson's name is Sebastiano, family name is Bondi. My son is Franco, daughter Claudia, husband Umberto. The son we lost , Adriano.
RITA.
Merci pour la maxime.
I am sorry I have not been able to visit more. Introducing children to nature is an excellent idea because of the technological life they now lead. Your pictures of birthdays are interesting...some Native American tribes believed that life was created by the wind because of the similarity between wind and breath. You have several pictures of two cakes and two blowers...I am assuming the birthdays are close together and celebrated together. Thank you for your visits and kind words. I am so glad you share your family with us.
Yes, and we have to make a good wish for a wonderful year of happiness.
Rosemary
These are very very lovely pictures!!
I love birthdays and birthday cake!
Michel, I hope you are doing well and the weather is not so terrible for you there.
Happy day to you
Hi Michel!
I think it's amazing how blowing out the candles is so universal among cultures...it's like one thing that can bring the world together, that's what I thought when I was looking at your pictures.
I haven't completely left xanga
How could I completely leave my wonderful friends here.
Life is very good. I'm in school again and it's keeping me very busy. I've been spending a lot of time meeting new friends in the city of Chicago. I love the city, it's been taking a lot of my time.
Hope you are doing wonderfully my friend!
In Friendship,
Aubrey
-juli
Your wonderful blog and pictures always give me a reason to have a more open mind about things. What a way to look at life and birthdays. Janines dad is a very young looking man. May he get to blow out many more candles.
As always I do enjoy the pictures of your grandchildren. The cakes are interesting, so different from what we usually serve here. They are quite nice.
Love
Edie Rose
Oh michel, I am so happy you are doing well!
That what you see on my blog is a puzzle with numbers, you do the puzzle using logic.
Check this site. It is not math, just thinking.
Blizzie is so happy you saw her blog

Thank you so much for the nice words about my profile picture. Judi
HA! Two good reasons to get your exercise!
One: To amass more candles!
Two: To amass the lung power required to blow them all out!
Although it appears that Janine's father was shown more mercy than were you!
I always enjoy seeing your photos, please come by, I have posted some just for you.
Your photos and blog made me smile and remember. My own daughter sent me a birthday card that said: Sweet is the cake and yummy is the frosting...(then when you open it reads:) Blowing out all those candles must be quite exhausting! We love each other you can see.
Hi Again
RYC... I home school my son. My husband computer programmer. But he helps teach my son Algebra. My oldest daughter who is 21 yrs old, teaches my son Science. I am teaching him civics. He also takes a German class and a creative writing class by someone else. This is my first year of home schooling my son. Thank you for stopping by my site.
The kids in your pictures are absolutely beautiful.
Many of the people who come to my site are not Christian so I do not talk about God but out of respect for all only call Higher Self or Higher Power. Judi
It looks like plenty of birthdays this month.
And thanks for the wishes. No, it wasn't really a loss. I quit because I would like to continue my studies. I have always been wanting to quit, but I guess it's natural that I'm missing some of the nicer things that came through during my work.
What a different and wonderful idea for the tradition of blowing out the candles. We have always made a wish, and if all the candles were blown out with one blow, we would receive our wish. I like your idea better!
How wonderful that Janine still has her father to celebrate with. My stepfather is almost 91, but he is getting very frail, and will be surprised if he lives another year.
Love your pictures. Children are so entranced by a birthday cake---I do think it is the lit candles on top that is the fascination. Your pictures have captured that fascination very well. Your cakes are so much fancier than most of ours!
I never knew the reason for the candle blowing. Haven't done it in years.
Loved your pictures and thanks for shedding light on the subject.
Now I know about the candles. Thank you.
I love coming to your page..I just wish you posted more often.Your posts are little (chicche) sweet candies...Love them...
Thanks Michel..
A hug to you and Janine,
Lucy
What a beautiful post! I am so sorry I haven't been around. There aren't 93 candles on that man's cake! hehehe
-the rachael
Love the pictures. There is something about the flame. Maybe it is a fascination with its power and beauty that draws us close. And by blowing it out, we hope to capture some of the wonder of it. I have a fireplace going today.... first time this winter. I love to sit by it and watch the flames dance among the logs. Hope you will have a great week. Blessings, kc
Vos photos sont si belles! Merci pour votre commentaire. Vous êtes très sympathetique, Michel. Ayez une semaine merveilleuse!
Bien amicalement, Elizabeth
Blowing candles out makes us all honorary firefighters!
Michel, you made me laugh when I read your comment on my sight. You were the only one who noticed my referral to renovating one's self!
I did not know you are a choir director. What sort of music other than religious do you prefer? I have a wide appreciation. I no long hear the low tones, but I do hear the higher ones. I am currently reading a biography on Django Reinhardt. He was way before your birth! Perhaps you have heard of him for he was in a trio called, "The Hot Club of Paris".
Tonight was my grandpa's birthday, and I thought of these pictures.
Those are some great picture of wonderful memories. It's so amazing how we can freeze that moment in a picture.
Hello sweety hope you have a great week. God Bless.
((((HUGS)))))
Wonderful pictures, wonderful words of wisdom, as always. It brightens my day to see the things you share here, Michel!

I don't know if the man was drunk. There just doesn't seem to be many good explanations. It was a bit windy that day and perhaps the wind caused him to lose control of his vehicle.
well put, m. fauquet!
I never understood until now...Yes yes yes..the breath of life is what it is all about...Thank you for this ephiney...!!!
The breath to blow out the candles...Life!!!!!!!!!! You are genius!! Great Teacher and fine scholar! ((Wings)) I love the glimpses you give into your life* Thank you.
Extreme precision by "the photographer" to capture the moment when everybody blew the candles! Bonne anniversaire à tous! Et merci milles fois pour tes voeux!
