Chaos en Bretagne
Chaos in Brittany
English version below the pictures
At the Devil ' s cave A la grotte du diable Photo Janine Fauquet July 2005
At the beginning of July we took some days of vacations in Brittany ( extrem western France ) . It ' s a area very attractive and mysterious .
One day we were among rocks of sandstone altered by erosion and piled in a sort of chaos of bowls .in a narrow valley covered by a forest . At the bottom a river flowed and at a place a directional sign led to the Devil ' s cave ( It is what is witten on it in French ) . My wife who didn' t go there , took a picture of me when I went up again and I find I have a weird look . Was the devil really there ? Of course , no , but perhaps we have in us permanently a struggle between the bad and the good .
Janine in the chaos looks a bit surprised and interrogative Janine dans le chaos semble surprise et s ' interroge Photo M Fauqet July 2005
Of ourse into Janine it always is the good that wins !

But of course. Janine is an angel.
What a beautiful place you visited!
Interesting rock formations. I bet the smell of the trees and other country fragrances were beautiful.
haha. quite insightful. very beautiful, as always.

Janine looks like she has the will to keep everyone around her good.
I have read books about Bretagne, and have always wanted to see its wild lansdscapes of mossy grottoes and stones. Thank you (and thank Janine) for the photograph.
pretty! i have always wanted to come to france and go bouldering/rock climbing at fontainbleau!!! of course i cannot climb right now since i am prenant but one day i hope to come over there. we have sandstone boulders and rock formations similar to those in france here in alabama. believe it or not.
You look like you were up to something in the very first picture. lol Very cute.
I love these pictures! What a lovely adventure!
You both look wonderful! We have a few caves around here named "Devils something..." Probably because most people associate down in the earth as evil... that would be an interesting post - why do most people feel that way =)

France looks like a lovely place to vacation. If I ever were fortunate enough to travel to France, I think I might avoid the big city's in favor of the smaller coastal towns and villages. Thank you for sharing your photo's with us.
the shortcut to hell?
She is a good wife.
Janine has a lot of sense
I'd stay away from a cave especially one where the devil might be ! You can never be sure where you might find him. BTW please tell Janine that Julie's tart was very good BUT no where near as lovely as the one she made for us.
Marie
It sounds like you had quite an adventure. Maybe the devil in the cave was you? Just joking
If the devil was smart he left! That looks like lovely green countryside though.
I envy your adventures and admire them greatly...
Yes, you do have a "devilish" look on your face.
It looks so cool there among the mossy rocks and trees. That is a very nice picture of Janine.
Thanks for your comments on my site. I think you may be right on the flower name. I checked it out online and the picture does looks just like my flowers. I will not have to wonder anymore. Thanks again.
Love
Edie Rose
almost looks like the area i used to play in for hours as a kid....very nice!
I do not think I would be brave to go down there I was just brave enough jumping down at the Cap
. Its a mistical place to visit . Its a lovely photo of Janine. Mum was right my tart was not as good as Janine's but I will have to practice more
hehe, I enjoy it. The devil? Just a figment of the imagination.
And I have all the love from my mom, hehe.

What a beautiful place! I think Janine was smart for staying put and being the official picture taker! :O) Your country is so beautiful!
I received a phone from our Raphaele...our exchange student from France. She and her family are currently vacationing in Corse. She called me as they were walking on the beach and on their way to get some ice cream. We miss her so much...she was truly a blessing in our lives.
We are talking about going to France next year. I would go now if we could but I must wait and hopefully work on some of my French!
I so enjoy your posts and look forward to the next one.
Love to you and Janine!
xoxo Cat
that looks like a fun place to play, michel~! and yes, it looks like your ornery side is showing in that picture. heehee
Was it really a cave that you went into? The only caves I have been to have been public with admissions and tour guides.
Those rocks are amazing. I have not seen anything like them before.
(or ominous.)

Rock formations and caves, those are two of my favorite places to explore!! Our eastern coast has a rocky coast and some inland caves as you describe!! Advertising a Devil's Cave would surely bring out the tourists here!!!
as always, beautiful pictures, so glad to see you are back on the computer. does this mean you are better? i am praying so. melinda
nice, Michel! living and learning from nature
What beautiful boulders and moss! There used to be an overlook in the Blue Ridge Mts. of VA and NC that was called The Devil's Backbone. I have a picture of my dad sitting on the sign with his back to the camera. He was far from being a devil; the closest thing to a saint I've ever known.
wow. if those rocks were over here it wud either have been roped off or cut into for a path, because the government thinks its too dangerous.
the fonts were traditional chinese.
Ah Janine, such a lovely lady! You are blessed.
Sure looks like wild country in the photos, so beautiful. I doubt the devil would have the nerve to hang around a place so obviously made by God.
Oh' my gosh, I absolutely love that first picture. So daring.
Have a great one!
Always such beautiful pictures! You live in such a pretty place. I hope to visit it someday. And how is your garden? Lots of flowers and veggies?
Hope you are feeling well!
What a beautiful picture of Janine!!
This is truly a lovely place, so green and lush. Michel, you look a little like the devil sitting on that rock!
Very interesting post this, and you always have something very meaningful to say in your blogs.
I love that drawing of the dog laying down, on my last blog, too!
I didn't draw it, but found it on Google Image Search, when I went looking for a suitable image to post of the dog I saw laying in that driveway.
The dog has a lovely kind eyes, don't you think, Michel?
ah, la bretagne!
je vais y faire des vacances itinérantes l'an prochain avec mes amis! j'espère que tu as bien apprécié tes vacances et que tu as eu beau temps! dans quel coin étais-tu exactemnt?
What does "Fauquet" mean? For some reason I keep spelling your name "faucet" because it's the closest work we have in English. Hehe. You know what a faucet is, right? It pumps water into the bath tub or sink. Anyway... thanks for your comment on my site.
Love in Friendship,
Kirsten
Oooooooh. You could call yourself the "French Reeper."
That's a beautiful area! I am thinking that that is Julie with you climbing on the rocks.
I always enjoy your comments about your wife. You seem to be such a happy couple and that is so wonderful to see.
I'm with Janine!! I steer clear of places with those sorts of names. It gives me the ....creeps! I do love all of the pictures on your site. It is the next best thing to being able to visit. That is our family goal on year very soon.
I have been enjoying our new French student...Marie Foret. She is such a dear. She is from just outside of Lyon. She embraces this experience and has brought some French culture into our home as well. It is a joy to have her here with us.
Take care of you and Janine. I am looking forward to seeing your next adventure.
Love,
Karen
Johnny Cash put himself into a mountain cave for a few days, when he needed to clean the drugs out of his body. He found god in there, and went clean.
Such power can be found everywhere, for good and ill.
There is a place between Casper and Shoshone, Wyoming, that is called," Hell's half Acher." It doesn't have water flowing in it though. I went there in 1998 when I took my 4,100 mile trip of 9 different states in the Western part of the U.S.
Your xanga is quite a pleasure to read. Every day is an adventure!
You are very kind for leaving a comment on mine! Thank you for your kind words.
Merci!
Blizzie
**I am taking an advanced French class this year! I am a little afraid, but I will do my best.**
you always go to some interesting places!! that's really great!
Nature offers some fascinating spectacles for us to visit. I'm glad you enjoyed your trip to Brittany!
Enjoy the rest of your week, my friend!
Very interesting rocks....and you both look cute!
It looks like a beautiful place. The rocks reminded of those I've seen in national parks here.
I love that in my wife too. How foul would the world be without the goodness in women? I can see by the expression on your face you were having fun.
That's where to find the fire breathing dragons...deep in the forest caves. Puts me in mind of white knights and damsels in distress. Oh so beautiful! Both people and place. Thank you
You looked scared as if you were going to fall, don't know about the devil one has to believe in a God if there is a devil. I still am not decided but don't worry for if there is one .I haven't done much harm to anyopne mso should enter those pearly gates. There is evil in the world, I wonder why when a baby is born they are so good ,and yet later they do evil. Love Marjie
emailing you
Seems as if my post didn't come. up so I will send an e.mail to answer your remarks on my site Love marjie.
It looks so peaceful and beautiful! Thanks for sharing, Michel!
Your Janine looks like the person who could and would slay dragons if they came after you in those caves...she is a beauty and I see the love in the eyes...she is special...and I think she feels a great deal of joy when you are the child enjoying with the child again
Love to you both!
Nancy
What's the history in that place? How did it get that name? Oh.. BTW, was it VE-day a few days back?
How I long to go back to France soon! We are planning to visit the Black Forest and just might drive over to Alsace... heh heh, looking forward to purchasing more wine and cheese!
you do so many wonderful things. i am for real planning a trip to paris and france sometime between feb and march of 06. i will bug you for ideas of things to visit. this area looks alot like the river area we use to go to in my youth. moss rocks in piles iwth caves. we use to run around and climb like little moutain goats.
I love the lush look of the area--the moss on the rocks. And you DO have a "devilish" grin on your face in the first picture.
Yes, the devil is always fighting to get us!
You say you were there in July? It must have been cool--you all are wearing jackets.
And yes, we women, Janine included, do have the "good" in us! Ha-ha!
Wonderful as always.

LOL! Interesting to find the Devil's Cave in such a beautiful environment. And the weather was good - I am glad you had a nice experience there
Carlo
la foret est tres jolie!
je ne dis pas les choses intelligentes......
i dont even know if i conjugated any of that correctly anymores. ahhhhhhhhh.
You certainly had a devilish look on your face
such a different type of place lovely
Take care and enjoy your weekend
Angela
it takes an angel michael to go directly into the devils' den these stones have been rounded and smoothed by great water at one time or another you and your family are beautiful as usual and if by some stroke of luck we have attempted and cleared most of our personal darkness there is always plenty hiding out in caves or in the universe in general to go around again but you know that i could almost breathe the moist air there and damp smells my own mountains across the ocean are as a tropical jungle this summer God Bless & yes Gods love and expressions of it are multifacted Sadly most limit it but you do not as your beautiful life expresses always/magi/beckon
Bonjour Michel!

Hi Michel! I didn't think about anyone not knowing what bluegrass music is! You have learned what it is. In Kentucky, there is a kind of grass that has a blue hue. Somehow, in the course of time, the name of the grass became associated with the music. The full name of the music is, in fact, "Kentucky Bluegrass." It is also called "mountain music" or "Appalachian music." It is a very person type of music, as some of the rural (isolated) people who play were not taught a convention, but learned their own method. It is an ingenious method. These people may be simple, but are still intelligent!

Bon jour, Michel! I am back from a long time not writing. My husband and I will be going to Arizona next week and friends of ours there will be taking us to a cave called Kartcher's Cavern. It is near the city of Tucson and was only just discovered in 1974. They say that cave experts have rated it one of the top 10 caves in America. I have been to a couple of caves here in Missouri and one in Kentucky, and I am just fascinated by them. So I really really enjoyed your photos of Devil's Cave and your writing about it. Blessings, Claudia
Thanks for your nice comment. I like you, too. I think you are one of the most gracious gentlemen I have ever had the pleasure of meeting, even if I have only met you electronically.
answer to carlo : the Devil ' s cave ( grotte du Diable ) is located in a village called Helgoat near Chateaulin in the department of Finistère ( Brittany ) France
Thank you for your very nice comment.
That made me smile... a miracle it is...
RYC: American high schools are divided into usually 4 grades: Grade 9 = freshman level, Grade 10 = sophomore level, Grade 11 = junior level, Grade 12 = senior level. Sometimes Grade 9 is in middle school with Grades 7 & 8. This year I teach grades 10 & 11; usually I teach grades 11 & 12. Thanks for your nice comment.
Still humane, but I had a hard time believing it was not edited according to someone's needs. I read it when I was young. Even then it made me irritated.
-the rachael
Tell Janine I love her shoes! You know I always notice shoes!!
That looks like a great place to visit but it makes me dizzy to look at it!
heheh! very diplomatic!;)
@ +++
- NaNa -
Thank you so much for showing pictures of your wonderful home country. You can show us things that a tourist will never see. And thank you for sharing your family with us, also, through pictures. Blessings, kc
Have a joyous weekend! Love to you!
Beautiful photos.
Hi. I found your xanga through Mrs. Karen's. I was a bit shocked to see it in French. Thank you for having it in English also. (In the French part, I was able to pick out two words, erosion and photo.:^) )
Thanks for the uplifting comment regarding age. Actually I love being a 50+. Except for some amusing and downright comical mental lapses I have found a perspective on life which has both humbled me and makes me appreciate even the smallest details of life. It is such a precious gift this life. There are such glorious and simple treasures of experience at every turn. I some how get the feeling from reading your xanga that you and Janine understand this full well. Thank you for sharing with us.
I am going to try to post a picture of my beloved pond. There is a lily blooming that deserved to be shared. There is no magic to keeping a pond in the desert...just give it shade and make it large enough to maintain a temperature of less than 85 degrees. Feeding the fish early each morning starts the day with a tranquil spirit. I recommend it to everyone.
My word I thought Texas had large rocks! Nowhere close to these. Gettysburg Penna. does have some huge rocks on the battlefield if I recall correctly.
I must say the picture has a quality of 'unrealness?' (not sure if therez such a word
) And you are smiling in a devilish kind of way!
RYC: Yes I do know who said that. It was Jesus Christ.
Just because I'm curious, what hot drink do the French drink? Tea? Coffee? I love learning about different countries and their people.
Beautiful place, Michel! The huge tree caught my eye. I wonder how old it is? And I agree..we all do have in us the permanent struggle between good and bad. Take care! Kaye
Salut Michel!
jim
okay i forget how to say this stuff in french. and i dont know the word for pregnant anyways...something they dont teach you in school...
1) i already live on the atlantic coast, BUT i want to be with a person in MD while at the same time i want to get away from my own family and go to college in NY
2) i most certainly am not pregnant. i'm unsure what gave you that impression?
(i deleted that comment in case any of my friends would read it and think i was pregnant....sorry.)
I look forward to your comments!! They are always so thoughtful! Is it as hot in France as it was last year?
yes, summer which is usually relaxing has been anything but.
the pictures are beautiful. there are many places like that around my state.
<3ashera
France -- one of the countries I most want to visit some day. Thanks for the glimpses.
I will try to get a picture of my snails...they eat algae, bits of fish food that settles to the bottom of the pond and anything else that is tiny and can fit into their mouths. I posted some pictures to help explain the pond...it is a little strange to think a koi pond would flourish in 115 degree heat but surprisingly enough, they will with a little tender loving care.
What an amazingly beautiful place, Michel ... it reminds me very much of the scenery here in western Canada. I thought I saw the devil for a moment on your shoulder, but when I looked again, he was gone! Je suis juste plaisantant!
I do indeed think we all struggle between good and evil. I like to think good will win in the end but sadly, as I look around the world today, I have to wonder ... which is why I treasure friends like you more every day. Take good care of you! Nancy
A bientôt !
Thanks for your comments. Perhaps the Candy man is unknown in France.
It is the childrens book by Roald Dahl, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. The first movie was in the 70's, and Sammy Davis Jr. turned the song, "The Candy Man" into his personal song.
Tanqueray is british, and is a type of Rum.
All the best.
Yes, Michel, you may be right. It may be time to move on. I can do things to my home whenever I have time and money but I have no control over what they do.... or rather won't do.... to help me at school. It's my love of the kids that are in my classes that keeps me going back. But at some point, it will be time to leave. I wonder if there is a sign or a signal or some special way of knowing it is time to retire? Hope you are having a great weekend. Many blessings. Love, kc
We have taken our students to small caves near here on several occasions; I always waited up above. I finally found the courage to go down into them this last trip. I'm glad I did; I hope Janine has seen the inside too. To answer your question--yes, I watched the monarch butterfly emerge early this morning. It was worth the wait.
Was there no treasure in the cave? That is my luck also, never any treasure, nothing but bat guano
Enjoy your travels!
How was your weekend? It started raining here Friday and has continued off and on since! I am glad for we needed it. I have two containers with wheat seed in them for my cats to eat and both are doing so well in this weather...
I have my French dictionary here, but I think I will study a bit more before I try a closing remark!!!
Yes, the look on your face was different, but considering the fact that you were climbing out of the Devil's Cave, it is most apropos. Janine looks to be surprised. She might have been hoping that bad old devil wasn't the cameraman!
I hope you have a great week Michel!
Love,
Deb

Salut Michel!
Yes, I'm looking for a job right now. I'm trying to get my priorities right as well. Sometimes it's a tough struggle deciding betwenn the nature of the job and the money it will bring. I do have some time though, meaning I'm not in a great rush, so hopefully something good will come along that doesn't require too much compromise.
Bonjour, Michel: Thank you for your lovely comments. You have such a wonderful way of making my heart smile!
I apologize for having been so cryptic in my last couple of posts. My fiancée passed away after a lengthy illness and I'm afraid I have been more than a little crazy the last few weeks. So, here I am at the threshold of a new beginning. Every day is a little frightening right now and I’m uncertain about what lies ahead, so I am treading with caution. I know it will just take time. Meanwhile, I am so grateful for the love and support of my good friends here at Xanga. It means the world to me that people care so much. In spite of everything, I do feel truly blessed. Take care, my friend.
Nancy
janine looks fabulous and you look so mischevious!!
I should have known coffee...espresso...yum! My favorite.
It does look very mysterious!
I think we all have a little devil in us...some of us are just better at keeping him contained! Hehehe
yes i definately think this one is worth reading. it is a bit darker than the others, but each seemed to get a bit darker anyway. you should read it when the french translation comes out.
I like that sort of stuff... visiting places that somewhat challenges my braveness : ) I hope one day i can visit that cave too.
I must apologize, Michel. I am not at the computer that often these days and I had not realized that you had come back to Xanga! Welcome back! I shall catch up on your other entry that I missed. Please do forgive me.
Great pictures! I am sure that the city had much to offer and is very pretty. I am glad that you took some time to enjoy yourselves and go on vacation. You deserve it all!
Have a wonderful week, my friend. God bless.
Thank you so much for the Birthday Wishes!! Me and Solon will have a little birthday party tomorrow night. It should be fun.
Such beauty! So lush and green.. Michel, I love the look on your face! Janine looks ready to climb..
what a lot of climbing...the moss on the rocks is very pretty...it seems you have had a wonderful adventure all of you...thank you for sharing the pictures...
Such a wonder to explore!!
I so enjoy your photos and reading your blog. Thank you so very much for sharing!
Debbie
what an interesting place!
You look realy good, are you wearing one of those French berets on your head. Some time ago I tried to get one for Matt over here ,as he will wear a beanie, and I hate those ,and now he is thin ,caps don't fit his head ,he used to wear one with a flying suit when we had a motorcycle and sidecar but berets have disappeared from Australia .One lady couldn't even find me one in England ,and yet when I lived there, they had plenty. I ecpect you will stay healthy a long time with all those vegetables you grow and eat Love Marjie
