  • Le cœur d ' Amiens

    Amiens ' s heart

    English version below the picture

Pourquoi me regardaient - ils ? Suis - je si beau ? Non .

Amiens : The quarter Saint Leu , the Cathedral and some tourists   Photo M Fauquet June 2005

Amiens capitale of Picardy ( Northern France ) is my hometown . I pictured the site I like the most . I am on a bridge on the river Somme and in front of me I see the old small houses made with clay ,and straw ,( daub ) , wood and bricks . I enjoy their coloured façades . In the past there were many textil factories at this place . The houses are built in the botttom of the valley . They were workers houses . Above you see the ancient Bishops ' s house and on the " floor " above the immense cathedral stretches its beauty kept intact since the XIIIth century . The vault is 42 meters high and reaches almost the towers top . It has been completely built during 40 years only and this gives it only one style , gothic of course .

What it amazes me , is the cathedral is built just at the limit of the first bank of the river without any problem for 800 years . ( I speak of  first bank but in fact I should say the last because the river dug the valley with the succession of iced eras .) .

At this place we feel surrounded by history and we feel ourself so small ..

But suddenly what do I see in front of me ? 4 people looking at me instead of looking at that wonderful sight ! Among those people there were 3 English people that I recognized by their language that is for me like a music . Why did they look at me ? Am I so beautiful ? No ! It was hot and there were pubs behind me !

  • Wow! Your town looks so beautiful. I've only seen places like that in movies. Hopefully when I visit France in the future (and I intend to) I'll be able to visit Amiens and experience the awe in person.

  • What a charming town!  The cathedral is a treasure.  How well it was built that it has no problems being close to the river all of these centuries.  It seems to me that 40 years was a very short time to build such a magnificient church.  I think I have heard that it usually took longer than that to complete a cathedral.  The oldest churches here in California are about 200 years old.  They are the adobe mission churches built by the Spanish.  It is sad, but many are now in need of major repairs to preserve them.

    As ever,

    Carol Suzanne

  • Thank you for sharing a glimpse of your beautiful, historic home town.  It is amazing that the cathedral has no structural problems after 800 years.  That is truly amazing and a tribute to the builders' skill and craft.

  • What a quaint town- I absolutely LOVE the cathedral and I’m a big fan of brick roads, they have so much class.
I still believe they were looking at you!!!

  • what a beautiful cathedral~!  thanks so much for sharing :o )

maybe those tourists thought you were another historic site??  lol

  • Such a picturesque town. Beautiful!

  • You live in such a stunningly beautiful place. Those medeivil architects worked wonders, didn't they? Solving the most complex foundation and roof engineering issues without any of the tools of the modern engineer, and needing to have it built with hand tools.

  • What a stunning and marvelous cathedral.  I would so love to travel to your country and see the beauty.  I do this from my computer chair as you share with me.  I join you and your friends in the pub for a cool glass Nancy

  • What a beautiful way to give me a history lesson!

  • What a beautiful view.

  • Giggling at your funny!  What a beautiful place to grow up in and especially to have memories of...I am ready to buy my ticket and visit France!!!

    xoxo Cat

  • tourists are so funny!  we get them in my town a lot because Lucille Ball is from here.

we were planning on leaving NYSSSA with at least one really funny story, and this one turned out funnier than we expected.

  • That looks beautiful

  • oh that's rich!! pubs!! haha....look at how beautiful the streets are! very majestic and grand! you are lucky to live where there is such culture and history!

  • I have never been to France, although I have French friends, they love Italy too. I think that we are blessed to have been born in Europe, so full of history and wonderful architecture. And food, but that's only France and Italy. I am reading at the moment a wonderful book by Peter Mayle, an English author who lives in Provence, called Bon apètit. The French and Italians do know how to eat. RITA

  • It was YOU!!! A very handsome man to stare at
    Love, C

  • haha.  very nice.  looks awesome.

    m{eye}k

  • First of all, I loved your tribute to Terry. It is very nice and so true.

I love this place that you grew up. I know you have a lot of memories. I think this Cathedral is absolutely beautiful. does it have an organ? have you been inside? I love to hear the old organs. I have a double album (old black 33 rpm records) of organ music played from organs all over the world, music played from that place or significant period of time... I should check and see if this Cathedral is on there.

This is a Lovely photo, the view and 4 friendly happy people

    Rosemary

  • Hi Fauquet I laughed at your comment with regard to why Juls, her mum and John were looking at you.  Surely not?  Surely they enjoy looking at their favourite Frenchman?

Amiens does look like a lovely town.

  • I hope you made it to the pubs to refresh yourselves....  These are beautiful and colorful places, I like the cobbled or bricked streets- and it  doesn't look  too crowded

  • Tres beautiful monsieur!!

  • Michel, we were admiring your spine Was this photo taken before or after we had beer ???  The cathedral is truly magnificent, inside and out, a man-made miracle. There was so much to take in that day, from the Mass, the lunch, the gardens and then the cathedral that my mind was in a whirl with the feasts for the eyes we experienced. I was one very happy tourist I want a badge that says  I Amiens. Marie

  • the church is beautiful! hope you're having a good day
    b.

  • ah, but you are beautiful. and the pub background only enhanced your beauty!

  •   You make me laugh.  Little Girl very well may be what you say....but she didn't get it from me......she got it from her Father if from anyone.  He's a mechanical engineer.  For sure she didn't get this gift from me.  Hee hee.

  • Answer to CoalMinersDaughter : The textil factories were principally ,dyeings and especially the famous colour blue extracted from a plant called " waide " . Nowaday it remains only one textil factory that makes velvet . The velvet of Amiens is or was renowned

  • Lovely city indeed.

  • I remember it was taken after the pub I think . It is a great photo of the Cathedral as well as the English tourists and the lovely French lady . It was very nice to be able to sit with a drink of beer and look at the beautiful city . This photos brings back great memories

  • Yes, I agree that you are beautiful.
You think English is like music? Well, French is like music to me.

  • The cathedral and description was wonderful, Michel.  I must visit the area sometime.

    -matt

  • That cathedral makes a wonderful backdrop for the tourists!  Unusual to see women in dresses nowadays.  I suppose that was because of going to the Cathedral??  Julie, Marie and your wife look beautiful!!  Forget the pub, you are too proud to admit that they were admiring you!!!!

  • You live in the middle of history. We don't have that kind of history over in the States. Nothing here is very old. I loved to walk through the cathedrals and castles in Europe...everything is so stately and ancient.

  • pubs...maybe...or maybe your wonderful aura that drew them to you...the Cathedral is breathtaking Miguel...you live surrounded by beauty...huggs...Sassy

  • I wish we had such villages here. Anything remotely as beautiful would charge admission!!

  • lovely lovely place!

it doesn't look that busy, either :)

i can't wait until i get to visit!!

    xo

  • Michel, your hometown is so beautiful! The cathedral is majestic, towering above all the other buildings. And still there after all these centuries! That's one thing I love about other countries, they have such a long history. America is so young compared to other countries. I so enjoy your pictures! Kaye

  • if the church were built where i lived, it wouldve been torn down several centuries after it was built. however, our city has only several centuries of history, so....... hmm it is a very pretty place.

  • I envy the beauty you must see every day in your beautiful home town/village. Yes, Michel, they looked at you because you are truely a beautiful man.

  • Votre ville est tres jolie!

  • Interesting post... your writing style translates well into English.

  • There is such a different "feel" to Europe than we have in the USA.  How I wish I could immerse myself in the color and texture of these wonderful places you share with us.  I have found a wild, untamed place to live here in the the western USA.  This calls to my heart also.  But it is different.  Each place has a magic.  ~Paloma

  • quelle belle photo, Michel.  très bien!

  • That looks like a really beautiful place.  You and EnglishJuls show us such beautiful places in Europe...it really makes me want to go there

  • Wjat can I say except magnificent    Bravo  Michel

  • Wonderful photo and I enjoyed getting to see your hometown.  Such history.  I'm so glad that we get to share even a small part of being a tourist with you.  Tip a glass for me!

  • Wonderful entry ! Lovely photo! HAppy people!  Good times!

  • that does look beautiful...

  • NYSSSA is a summer school for art.  i went there to learn to make videos.  its a few hours from my house, and i was there for a month.

    <3ashera

  • That's a lovely street scene. Maybe the people just wanted to be in the picture. Or maybe they looked at you and were marveling at what a charming gentleman you are!

  • I thought those were friends or family when I first saw the picture.

A lovely place, thank you for sharing as I have never been across the ocean.

  • TAG UR IT!!!!!! this is soooo scary!!! send this to 15 ppl in the next 143 mins and then press F6 and your crushes name will appear in big letters!!! it is soooo scary cuz it works...but if u break the chain...u will be cursed w/ relationship problems for ever. no backs.

  • OO looks pretty there!

  • I had to laugh at you saying why they were all looking at you, "It was hot and there were pubs behind me". A lovely picture of you all, Michel. What a beautiful town this is, such classic architecture. I also love those cobbled streets. You certainly have some wonderful photos of Jul's, Marie's and John's visit with you.

  • C'est spectacular... To view a something like this could only be pictured in fairy tales... Or movies... I am glad to know that some things which seem out of reach, can now be aquired (or in this case, be viewed)...

    Au revoir

    -Elazul: "Asalaam aleikum"

  • haha i love you site and the church is absolutly gorgeous wll have a good day god bless and check mi site too plz

  • The cathedral on the background looks beautiful. I saw Amiens briefly in the Tour de France recently... one of the pleasant things of staying at home, during a rainy summer vacation.

  • RYC:  I have had pictures of mindy on my blog before.  But put one up today, just for you.  She was in a beauty pageant in April, and on my April 26 blog there are several pictures of her.  She placed 4th in the pageant.  She is a very sweet girl.  Will be starting college the end of this month, studying music.  Each of our 12 grandchildren are talented in their own way1

  • You have just nearly had me rolling on the floor with your matter of fact ness. lol  There were pubs behind you. lol  A wonderful picture and an even more wonderful description of the picture and the town.  You are wonderful with words.  Have a great day and a wonderful tomorrow.   Much love and many hugs to you and Janine ! ! !   May you both sleep with the angels and wake up fully rested and ready for a brand new day ! ! ! !  Take care.

  • I don't think it was the pubs.  I think they really wanted their photo done in front of this gorgeous site!!  It sounds like a wonderful place to grow up.

  • michael   when i first communicated with you almost a year ago  i told you you had the face of an angel   irrestible the light that radiates from some   what a lucky man to have come from such a beautiful place and it appears to be not very spoiled by modernization   thank you for stopping by   as you i will miss lord p    io saw your comment    God Bless magi/beck

  • merci, Michel!!!

  • I am sure they must have been looking at you, and not the pubs! Ha ha.....

You sure grew up in a most beautiful part of the country. I like places with a lot of history!

Have a wonderful weekend, my friend!

  • Your site makes me feel at peace.

  • Very nice...  It is so interesting how a place can make you feel that way...    I love hearing about the history.

  • I imagine they thought they were supposed to look at the camera, but I take your point! :)   What I loved best about my visits to Europe was being surrounded by history.  The U.S. is such a young country by comparison.  There's nothing here that gives you the feeling you're in the same spot as once occupied by knights of old.  Your photo, charming enough in and of itself, reminded me of the joys of past travels.  Thank you for that.

  • I cannot imagine what it is like to be constantly surrounded by so much beauty and history. Does it get common, routine for you? The way your country prizes history and historical things is one of the things I love about France. What a beautiful town to live in. Have a great weekend.   Blessings, kc

  • Beautiful town Lucky to run into beautiful you

  • A lovely town, and also the English tourists.  I believe we have seen some of them touring in these parts!  It is nice that you are blogging again, Michel, hopefully I will soon be writing as well.  It's been a busy summer and promises to be a busy fall, too.

  • Such a beautiful place.  I wish it was in my power to visit and see for myself.  It is so nice that you share with those of us who must visit through pictures and your comments - they are wonderful.

I laughed at your saying about the people and the pubs.  You always bring a smile to my face with your thoughts and pictures.

I hope you are having a wonderful week.   (((hugs))) and smiles   ~char

  • Thank you for your condolences.  The doctor didn't want me to travel because I am 8 1/2 months pregnant.  He was afraid I would go into labor on the road.  Hope you have a wonderful day,  and thank you for visiting my site.

  • What a quaint place I would love to visit who knows one day maybe Angela

  • Very magical.  And I would have bought you a beer!

  • A beautiful and ancient place, Michel. Can you feel the presence of history there? I am amazed when I visit an old place and think of the generations who passed through there before me.

Today I heard from our friend, Amy. I know you would want to know that she is well.

    Take Care friend!

  • You are right, Michel, the bedroom one is great and sometimes when Father is working on that one, I sit on the bed beside him. He is a man with very dry (wry) humour. Sometimes he says something that makes me roll over so it is nice to be sitting on a bed!

  • What a beautiful photo...and it was a nice day too.

    The church looks huge.

Must be e real nice town,Amiens.

    Amitié

    Carlo

  • i love your gentle humor in these posts. I, too, know that feeling all too well when you are surrounded by history. Sometimes it makes you breathless so as to not destroy it.

  • It is wonderful to visit your site then leave feeling that I have just visited friends in another country. The pictures and your writing are interesting, with some humor thrown in. I usually enjoy a smile or two, when I visit with you. That is a real beautiful town that you live in. Thank you for taking me on the tour of those beautiful buildings.

    Love

    Edie Rose

  • I envy you to be able to see such sights everyday!! Are there many carriage horses that go through town?

  • I've never been to France, but it looks so magnificant that I must go there one day!  Such a beautiful looking country!  =)
