The Angles - sur - Anglin fortified castle
    ( in Touraine , France ) .

Are not they impressing these ruins of the Angles - sur - Anglin ' s fortified castle still up from the Middle Age . This important fortress -castle protected the charming valley of the river Anglin ( second picture below ) .

We learned by the visit of this place that Angles - sur - Anglin is so called because its area has been inhabited by a part of a terrible German tribe, the Angles , which already had envaded England ( Angleterre in French ) in the fifth century . At the beginning of the 9th century the occident Emperor Charlemagne to appease the agitated Angles remained in Germany gave to them this area situated in south Touraine ( France ) . This is why the little town is called Angles and the river , at first the Angla , the  Anglin . The inhabitants are nammed the Anglais ( English ) ! ! Yes ! In Touraine true English people or Angle people have participate to the peopling . Stunning , isn't it ? Before the  invasion of England by William of Normandy in 1066 .

I don't know if this blog will interest my american friends but I confess I have been very moved to find out  so neat traces of the history of the first millenary of Europa . I wanted to share this emotion with you .

  • Well, since I am  Anglican and French desent, I am very interested, Michel. Thank you for sharing. Awesome photos.

  • Looks like a very beautiful place.

  • These are great photographs!  I love history!  These ruins are amazing.  So ancient and yet proud as a fortress.  What a lovely little hamlet they have protected all this time.  There are many lessons here!

Ceux-ci sont de grandes photographies! J'aime l'histoire!

Great composition in photos! They could stand on their own as art. See YOU ARE an artist, you should join ArtExchange.
...how rich to have such ancient history. It's what makes Europe, Europe. Isn't it?  Yes, I can imagine the pride and stability of seeing this remarkable castle of your country's fifth century, WOW! Think it amazing the castle is still standing. Do you think what is being built today will be standing 16 centuries from now?

  • That's fascinating, Michel! I spent most of 1972 touring Germany, Austria, Hungary & Czechoslovakia (in between school) and we always visited the castles. I loved the history!

Lately I've been finding out more about the early history of England and France. My husband's family is from Normandy in the 1600's. Mine is from Scotland, England & Germany. I am fascinated with stories of how the countries interconnect in their history.

  • ...correction: ArtExchange  MuSE

  • What a fascinating history of this area.  I always like to learn more about history.  I am very interested in the ancient caves in France that have the beautiful prehistoric drawings in them.  Have you ever visited them?

  • I found it very interesting... how I would love to wander around there with my camera.

  • Beautiful ... to teach my daughters to love learning - lifelong learning - of all peoples and places and events ... this is the quest! Thank you for being a part of this journey!

  • Thank you for the History lesson and the wonderful photographs!

  • Since I studied French in High School I have wanted to visit France.  I love to see your pictures and hear the history behind them.  I still hope that I will get to go there one day.

  • I helped her study her French lessons.....so I'm going with her!! Sagiscoobious does not know this yet! shhhh! Don't tell her, it will be a surprise. HA HA! I joke.
Loved seeing the pictures. I traced my ancestory back to Normandy thru 2 sides of my family.

  • Merveilleux!

I know not everyone is an ice hockey fan.

  • Great to learn more from you, Michel. I guess it must be wonderful to live where History is so alive! And this last picture, the one in the bottom is heavenly to me! When I was younger and I used to draw landscapes, I used to imagine somethong like that. Of course, I was too far from that perfection!

As for your question on school semester, it´ll start in late July. Students have a break in the month of July, as we are in the middle of the winter here. And my break is over as well... but that´s fine.. At least I had more time to blog!

    Amite, Michel

  • Oh that is sooooo gorgeous!!!!

  • Trés interessant village.

Touraine  must have a lot of towers,Tours.

I wonder if they built such walls to keep the enemies out (obvious) or to keep some friends inside (less obvious, but sometimes true ).

    Nice pics.

  • Very nice historical insight.  I am actually in France right now, on vacation staying with a friend in Thonon -- near Geneva, Switzerland.  I think however, that our paths have crossed.  I sat next to a couple on a plane to Paris, that very much resembled you and your wife.  Did you fly on an Air France flight to Paris last week?

  • What great pics Michel , I love history and castles . One of the reason I watch the Tour of France the countryside

  • The photo is beautiful and the history even more interesting Makes me want to go and visit

  • I didn't know that the Angles were German.  But we British are a mixture of many many nations - Scandinavians, French, Celts, Germans etc, etc.  Why are we so reluctant to blend into Europe?  Tom

  • I love castles. They breathe the history from long ago. At times one can feel jhow the inhabitants must've felt (in our imagination!!!!).

Charlemagne....  isn't that the same emperor that lived in my town??? In "het valkhof"...

We have a restaurant in our town " Charlemagne"...so I think it's the same one.

I have heard that they didn't go to england to fight...but to bring their religion....

But you may be right...I don't know.

    =======

I do know that you are right.. I mean..the comment on my blog from today.

We are both tired from all what went on these last 9 months. But we have a responsibility to our children. I don't want to be responsible for everything at the moment.

    Hugssss

  • The next time I visit France, I want a map of all the castle locations.

  • That's incredible!  Just like in a fairy tale!

  • That's beautiful!!!

  • Hello. You left a comment on my blog, if you remember. Oui, je parle francais. I was speaking of the Sacre Coeur in Paris. My roommate spent two months in France, yet she seems to know nothing about the country...

I really enjoy coming to your website to practice reading in French and to see the wonderful pictures.

  • Beautiful pictures!

  • It looks like a postcard!

  • Outstanding narrative and photography. This American loves European history – Thank you Sir.

  • Only now have I realised I have writen "Amitié" in a wrong way at least 1000 times.. Sorry!

  • This brief historical background you just gave is so hilarious. We all know that French and English don't get along very well dated back a LONG LONG time ago, and you see names like Angles, Angla, & Anglin in a French town.

  • wow! gorgeous!

  • Michel, St.John's is the capital city of NewFoundland. The most eastern province of Canada.

  • Just blogged in and wow, I love history, will be blogging back again ha

  • So many people to contend with when one answers your site, That must tell you that you are interesting. I love seeing your photos and learning a bit about history,  which I have forgotten about. last night on our T.V. they were showing the early days of W,W,1 It is a good job we in England did not know then how close we were to losing the war. I think if the Japs had not bombed Pearl Harbour and America not come in, we would have found it difficult to have won. I wonder why they were so long wanting to help Europe, how selfish it seems now. You French must have really suffered after that first enslaught, were you near Dunkirk?. Thanks for all good wishes Cheers Marjie.

  • Fantastic!  I love these wonderful places and the history!!!!!!    @-}-}--

    marie

  • Great pictures... thanks

  • We have such similar pictures of castles and buildings throughout Europe! I just came across a big box of many pictures very close to these. Maybe I will share them one day.

  • I think the pictures are beautiful and I am very interested by the history as well.  My dream is to one day be able to visit your part of the world and see some of these beautiful things with my own eyes

  • These photos and your description of history of the area are beautiful and interesting, Michel. I just love how the little village rests at the castle's feet. Such a safe feeling it gives.

  • Beautiful. In one word!

  • Very interesting blog...all these histories, if one goes back far enough, become intertwined.

For example: the French flag is one of the six flags that have flown over Texas.

And do you know the story of the Texan who saved the French wine industry in the late 1800s?
