    Human liberty .

Yesterday my wife Janine and I took part in Amiens ( France ) in a meeting for study the Bible directed by Antoine Moussali , a christian arab priest . He said that Jesus made advance radically the notion of human liberty by the way he declared we had the same Father . From this fraternity , liberty proceeds . I notice besides that the France ' s device is : Liberty , Egality , Fraternity since 1789 .

But , what is to be free .? Antoine Moussali said " we have our biological and sociological determinisms . At first of all it is necessary to be aware of them and to try of control them ,as much as possible ." And he quoted the french proverb : know you yourself . " Indeed what is making our liberty is the capacity to make choices to allow the capacity of fulfil oneself ."

I have appreciated this reflection about the notion of human liberty and I have thought of transmit it to you simply for discussion .

  • I think these are very wise thoughts. In a Utopia, more people would share these views and allow liberty of others. Thank you for sharing. I hope you are well.

  • I think there are several differnet plains of freedom... most people think about freedom on the physical plain...  there's also emotional and spiritual and I believe a spiritual freedom/liberty is the greatest freedom a person could have...  one who is set free is free indeed...

  • I've always thought human liberty is when you can believe what you want to believe and say what you want to say without having anyone or anything forbid you to do so.  Good blog, Michel.

  • Freedom... means so much and is different for everyone... but it is about choice.. doing the right thing and having the ability to carry it thru... excellent topic!!

  • "Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."  --John 8:32 asserts that knowing Jesus, who is The Truth, is the way to true freedom-- the kind of freedom that can be had even in a prison.  For myself, it has been the only way to find freedom.

  • My heart soars when I think of Jesus in life, when he walked the earth teaching.

  • What is it to be free?  That's a huge question with endless possible answers!

  • thank you for making me think

these are big issues to comprehend

  • I wish I was able to read your French..but I will say most humbly that I feel blessed that I am able to make choices of my free will.  We have never know forces that keep us from making those choices as some of you have had in Europe.  That must have been extremely difficult for all.  So at times the choices we make that are good for our souls...can be difficult for those around us.. Thank you for the thoughts

  • I think there is a desire for freedom in our souls, placed there by God. Liberty, for oneself and others is a noble pursuit.

"So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." John 8:36

Jean 8:36

  • wow, I'm so glad I stumbled upon your site! I just subscribed, because I have been looking for ages for a weblog that is in French, but bonus...this is perfect for all my translation needs! I'm 17 and English, studying French for A level and this is great. Thank you so much!

  • I think everyone has freedom of thought ,sadly so many in this sick world dare not voice it out loud. Looking at the world today, it is difficult to relate it to what went on in Bible days. One can just do their best and hope for the best. Cheers Marjie.

  • Freedom ... Liberty - it truly is in the mind. For those held in prisons, knowing Christ - are free in Spirit ... and THAT is more important than being able to 'speak out' whatever is IN my mind!

  • I just feel blessed to be free.

  • Freedom... It is very important to feel free to choose, even when we choose to be in subjection to an idea, a supreme being, or an established way of being. Too often people believe that to be free a person must rebel against something. That's very sad. We are free, whether we know it or not, to make our own choices, and we must also deal with the consequences of those choices.

By the way, to reply to your comment on my site, Michel. I think Marjorie Holmes meant we do ourselves a disservice when we compare ourselves and our accomplishments with others -- that life is not a competition.  I certainly agree with you that life is interaction. As they say, "no man is an island."

  • Ah freedom. My right to purse happiness. God bless all democratic and freedom loving countrys.

Oui, je parles un peu francias.

    Amour
    Hollie

  • Michel!! Your blog generates much discussion and all of these GREAT comments too!  I agree with so many, pjfweb, Alice, Proverbs 31, craktpot, cheri herald... I think they say what I think quite well.  I too am glad to know the most important freedom... spiritual freedom.  I think you can deal with lack of any other freedoms as long as you have that, and it comes from our Lord and Saviour, Jesus!

Thank you Michel!  Many hugs to you,

                         Deb (aka-soon in Whitby, Ontario!)

  • I am thankful that we even have freedom as a choice

  • I think living who we really are is so important. Whether one really knows themselves in a lifetime I do not know. I am spending time in deep communication with myself and trying to follow my intuition. I believe this is the voice of my higher power. Then if everything falls into place it was truly my higher power. When I live guided by my higher power I am free. Free to be the person I was meant to be. Jass

  • wonderful words to contemplate today

  • Freedom-I feel that only someone who has been in a controlling relationship or under some other form of control can really appreciate how wonderful it is to be free. Good blog, Michel! Have a great week!

    Votre Ami, Cat

  • I have also studied the Bible and peace issues.  I thank you for this thoughtful message.  Tom

  • What a smart set of thoughts Monsieur Fauquet. I feel Freedom is something you must create for yourself. You mentioned that there may be a French Restaurant in my area. The closest one is about a two hour or more ride by car.

  • Yes thank you for the messge!  @-}-}-

  • Extremely thought provoking -

Well..... freedom, liberty ..... Is it just the ability/choice to do what one likes? Or does it also lie in the ability in making the right choice such that it is useful to everyone around you!

We here in India ... got free from the british only 55yrs ago. We still debate on our freedom... We are slaves to our narrow minded ideas, we still are more concerned about other's lives than our very own, we still are under the clutches of hypocrisy, corruption at every strata of the society...

    Are we free at all??

  • Thanks for visiting you have a great place to visit. Jass

  • vivek brought up some interesting points... one of them being freedom from our own ideas (and, perhaps, ideals). It is sometimes hard to be truly free and also connected to others. Wonderful blog, fauquet... thank you so much for sharing this wisdom and inspiring such thoughtful comments.

  • simply brillant Michel..thanxs for sharing! *smiles*

  • Freedom. Many people lost their lives for it. For our freedom.

Freedom means that we can go to the school that we choose. That we can go to church, without any problems. Freedom means that we can choose for ourselves if we go on vacation or not. If we take the train in stead of the car. We are free to have our own opinion. That is important. Especially in a democracy.

Freedom is also important when you make a choice on Election Day. The day that people choose a new government. It is one of the days that people can decide on who they are going to vote.

Freedom is un-payable. If people lose their freedom to make their own choices, to speak about their opinion freely, it can lead to war. That is something that may not happen...

  • We here in our democartic countries take our freedom for granted , not like in some other countries where they do not have freedom

  • I m not that sure about monotheism, I m more a kind of  sympathy for the pantheism,I like to pray to more Gods, it s good for the concurrence.

About Liberté, i m not sure we have much liberté and let not speak of fraternité and egalité.Nice words for a musical.

The Idea of God should be remplaced by the word Love.

    Bien à toi

    Carlo

  • thank you, my dear.

  • Personal freedom would be the limits and boundaries one sets for ones self.
Then there is the freedom to be allowed to be happy according to the laws that govern the place you live.  I tend to confuse other people. .

  • Great blog! Freedom is definitely a choice and an aggreement with oneself to never let fear stand in the way of our happiness. "To thine self be true!"

  • Thanks for sharing these pearls of wisdom... they are so true

  • Freedom is a very natural state of mind. The human soul longs to be free. And as you said, freedom comes from truly knowing oneself. Great blog!

  • St Paul wrote that as Christians we could say or do anything, but that didn't mean that all actions were wise.  True liberty includes the choice to restrain ourselves, so that our lives reflect Him.

  • ...so many comments and opinions. MuSe

  • Thank you for another comment on my diary.  Yes, England won at football and many people are rejoicing.  I do not get as excited as others because football is not something I love.  Tom

  • Freedom.......

I'll try and find an entry I wrote some time ago.... I think somewhere at the beginning of may.......

Just these days.... now I feel so tired.......I feel there's another feeling of freedom to be felt.
With the internetconnection shut off, I felt that a certain freedom was taken.... the freedom to communicate with people all over the world....

In a way I felt imprisoned in my own body and in my own world.... still.....my thought were carried to Raven, to you, and some other dear friends.

    Thanks Michel......

to be loved unconditionally that's having the freedom to be oneself.....

  • As the Greeks said: "Gnothi seaumont".

    Know thyself.

I am glad to see you, and all of us, reflect upon such things; it is, as you know, important.

    Egalite, Liberte, Fraternite.

It was those ideals, and the Judeo-Christian revelation, that led to that Europe which was the progenitur of the American ideal.

And thus, it seems to me: "Omnia via, ad ducent Romam."

    All roads lead to Rome.

  • Wow, what an intellectual blog. For me, to be free is to have my right to my own private thoughts & speech .. and the right to be me as long as this does not harm or hurt others.
Sadly, its very hard to achieve this... political correctness has gone silly & has stopped this virtually.
    All the best, Zara.

  • Liberty....a very American word, but I realized recently we just stole it from you guys.

  • Freedom.  For the people here where I live it is being able to travel once again without fear of being kidnapped, robbed or killed.  It has been that way for over 40 years, their dream continues.  But personally I have little faith that dream will ever be realized here, at least not too soon.  The generation I teach have no idea what it would be like to be "free".  To be able to play in the streets, go somewhere without bodyguards, etc. The only place where they come close to freedom is at school!  It is sad.

  • Speaking of "Liberty" and the "bible" - I just released an article on my site about the "holocaust" of Hitler's Day.  You might find it interesting.

Je parle le francais un peu.

    *smile

  • Where are you, Michel? Please post again, and I will, too.
