En Octobre dernier , deux de mes filles , Isabelle et Véronique , vagabondaient dans les bois du Kent en Angleterre .Non , elles ne rencontrèrent pas le fantôme du roi Henry VIII qui possédait un château non loin ( château de Leeds ). Elles trouvèrent une quantité de champignons qu’elles rapportèrent chez elles . Les photos ci-dessous montrent leur récolte . Je comprends qu’elle prirent plaisir à les cuisiner après les avoir soigneusement préparés. Il n’y avait pas de toxiques dans le lot sinon elles n’ auraient pas été capables de m’ envoyer ces photos quelques jours après .Elles avaient un bon guide .
C’ est un réél plaisir d’ être en forêt sous les chênes ou les pins offrant différentes espèces de champignons . Identifier des champignons est une science et un art qui demandent l’ usage de la vue, du toucher , de l’ odorat et aussi du goût . ( prudence , cela peut être poivré ) . L’ audition n’ est pas nécessaire sauf si vous voulez entendre le son des limaces qui aiment aussi les champignons . Ceci demanderait certainement une bonne ouïe !

Last October , two of my daughters, Isabelle and Veronique, were wandering in the woods in Kent in England . No they didn’ t meet the ghost of King Henry VIII who owned a castle no far ( Leeds castle ) . They found a lot of mushrooms they brought back home . The photos above shows their crop . I understand they enjoyed to cook them after a careful preparation . No toxic ones among them if not they wouldn’ t have been able to send to me those two pictures some days after . They had a good guide. .
It is a real pleasure to be in a forest under the oak trees or pine trees offering different species of mushrooms .Identifying mushrooms is a science and an art whom ask to use the sight , the smell , the touch and the prudent tasting ( some may be piquant ) . The hearing is not necessary excepted if you want to hear the sound od the move of the slugs that like also the mushrooms . This would ask certainly a good hearing .!!!

Quel que soit ce que vous chercher , champignons pour la cuisine ou pour la connaissance scientifique : identifier les champignons des chênaies , hêtraies ou pinèdes, vous ressentez toujours ce plaisir ineffable de marcher dans la nature . Quand j’ étais plus jeune j’ aimais rechercher les endroits isolés et rares pour étudier les plantes , les roches et.. ..les champignons.

Whatever what you search , mushrooms for cooking or for scientist knowledge : identify the population of mushrooms in a wood of beech trees , oak trees or pine trees, you always have the inexpressible pleasure to walk in the nature . Our children have been educated by Janine and I to investigate the nature. When I was younger I loved to research isolated and rare places to study plants , rocks and of course mushrooms .( picture above )

Mais pas besoin d’ aller loin , la nature et toujours là qui appelle et demande qu’on la regarde . La récompense est toujours grande.

But, no need to go far , nature is always there to call and tell you to looks at it . And the rewards is always high .

Mon fils Jean -Baptiste m 'a envoyé des photo d'une récente promenade au pied du Cap Blanc - Nez qui limite le détroit du Pas-de Calais en face de Douvres . En ce moment de l ' année cet endroit est désert.
C ' est une haute falaise de craie . La même se trouve de l ' autre côté en Angleterre.

   My son Jean - Baptiste sent to me some pictures of a walk at the basis of the Cape Blanc - Nez ( Northen France ) that limits the Dover Channel, in front of Dover ( England ) . At this time of the year this place is deserted .
   It is a high cliff of chalk .The same is on the other side in England

A marée haute c ' est dangereux car vous devez marcher près de la falaise dont des blocs peuvent s ' effondrer .
Sur la photo on voit le Cap Griz nez et son phare . Au Cap griz nez se trouve le centre de contröle de l '    intense navigation dans le détroit .

At the high tide you have to walk near the cliff what is dangerous because of the fall of blocks of chalk at anytime.
On the picture we see another Cape far away , the Cape Gris Nez . There is standing the control center of the intense traffic of the ships in the Channel

La roche , la mer , le soleil . Y a - t - il un paysage plus dépouillé ? Une beauté grandiose dans sa simplicité .

la vue s 'élargit . Les goélands tiennent un colloque . A l ' horizon un ferry s 'en va vers le port de Calais venant de Douvres . Il rappelle la présence humaine dans cet endroit solitaire .

The sight becomes larger . the seagulls are holding a conference !! At the horizon a ferry goes to the harbour of Calais from Dover . It recalls the human presence in this lonely place.

   Sous la crie se trouve une couche d ' argile si bien que la falaise est fragile et s ' effondre épisodiquement.

    Below the chalk is standing a layer of clay so that the cliff is frail and collapses from time to time .
   Nice sight of the cliff and of the Cape Blanc Nez.

         No words to express such beauty .

Je connais cet endroit et je peux dire que dans cette solitude on se sent en résonance avec la nature d 'une façon inexprimable . On se sent vivre .

I know this place and I can say in those solitudes one feels oneself in resonance with the nature in an inexpressible way . We feel the pulses of life

Qui se soucie de cette étroite plate-bande le long de l ‘ entrée? Quelques minuscules chétifs rosiers sont là montrant leurs branches presque nues avec quelques feuilles encore vertes. Ils n’ont pas la splendeur des grand arbres avec leur feuilles d’or et de pourpre brillant dans le soleil couchant. Il semblent misérables et souffreteux . Chacun passe à côté sans un regard ,ils sont méprisés .

Who cares of this narrow flower bed along the driveway? Some tiny stunted rosebushes are there showing their almost bare branches with some leaves still green . They do not have the splendour of the tall trees with their golden and purple leaves shining in the sunset . They look so miserable and suffering. Everyone passes by without a glance . they are despised

Mais si vous y regarder de plus près, chacune de ces roses est une merveille. Elle montre avec humilité sa robe pourprée . Elle est modeste , simplement belle et si attirante . Est – elle parfumée comme cet été dernier ? Je ne sais pas mais elle a conservé son élégance .
Et en plus la rose vous parle , elle vous dit qu’ elle reviendra l’année prochaine , que c’ est promis. Cette rose nous dit l’ espoir , l’ espoir que célèbre la fête de la Toussaint le 1^er Novembre.

But if you look closer , each of those roses is a wonder . It shows with humility its purple dress With modesty it is simply beautiful and attractive. From the last summer did it keep its fragrance? I do not know but it keeps its elegance.
And, more , this rose talks to you , it tells you it will be back next year , it is a promise . This rose tells us the hope which is celebrated at All Saints Day on November 1.

Pour rester sur le thème des roses , en entrant dans un des cimetières que nous avons visités hier jeudi à l’ approche de la Toussaint, je montrais à Janine un petit rosier que j’ avais planté devant la tombe d’une tante il y a 10 ou 12 ans ou plus. Il a toujours résisté et cette année il était tout en fleur , plus beau que jamais . Fleurir durant tant d’années dans des conditions aussi précaires reflétait bien la vie de la tante Maria . Il nous exprimait sa joie de nous voir là , venant de si loin exprès pour elle .
Nous avons senti cette douceur et cet amour ,comme sur les autres tombes..

To stick on the topic of rose , in getting in one of the cemeteries we visited yesterday Thursday at the approach of All Saints Day, I showed to Janine a small rose bush that I had planted in front of an aunt’s grave 10 à 12 years ago or more . It always resisted and this year it was in full bloom , more beautiful as ever. To bloom during so many years in so precarious conditions was the image of Aunt Maria’s life.. It told us her joy to see us there , coming from so far especially for her .
We felt this sweetness and this love. The same for the other graves visited..

Plus de cris , plus de pleurs!

Last week my wife picked the last fruits in the garden : apples and quinces. I tell her a bit mindnessly :"it is the last crop of the year ."
I had forgotten there were the medlars yet on a small tree in the lawn , but they are principally a botanical attraction. We dont eat much them.

While I was picturing the medlars It came to my mind to go to the vegetable garden . Here is above the entrance . It is no more the glory of the spring when cherry trees, pear trees and apple trees are all white in full bloom . But when we go further we find out some pleasnt surprises . Les poireaux forment deux parcs rejouissants à voir et nous en avons déjà mangé . Ah les delicieuses soupes ! le chicorées scaroles ont bien résisté aux premières gelées matinales et feront de bonne salades jusqu ' en Décembre s 'il ne gèle pas trop fort .

We are delighted by the sight of two patches of leeks . We already have eaten some ; Ah ! the good soup ! The endives have resisted very well to the first morning frosts and are excelllent salads to eat until December if there is not too hard frost .

Et plus loin que vois-je ? de minuscules plantes qui viennent juste de germer . C ' est la mâche semée en Septembre . Elle résiste au gelées et nous aurons de la salade jusqu ' en févier -mars .

And further what do I see ? Tiny plants that have just germinated .It ' s the corn lettuce sown last September . This plant resists to the frost and we will get salad until februaty/March .

Non , les coings n ' étaient pas la dernère récolte . le jardin si bvous le travaillez régulièrement et avec soin produit presque toute l ' année une saine nourriture de base . la terre est une bonne mère dans nos climats et on peut faire preuve de reconnaissance . Je pensais à tous les affamés dans le monde qui seraient si heureux avec ce jardin et ce climat . Nos pouvons les aider à recréer les conditions d 'une bonne agriculture locale .

No the quinces were not the last crop . The garden , if you work in it regularly and carefully products almost all of the year a basic and sane food . The ground is a good mother in our climates and we can be grateful
I thought of all the hungry people in the world who would be so happy to grow this garden with this climate . We can help them to re-create the conditions of a good local agriculture

Un voyage manqué

Hier Lundi matin nous roulions gaîment en voiture d’ Amiens en direction de la Côte d’ Azur pour un agréable séjour ensoleillé chez notre fils aîné.La distance totale était 1200 km mais nous avions réservé un hôtel à mi-distance pour nous reposer .

Nous étions sur l’autoroute avec déjà 300 km derrière nous quand la voiture tomba en panne : la pédale d’ embrayage ne fonctionnait plus , pas moyen de changer les vitesses. Cependant j’ ai réussi à atteindre une aire de repos .
Un dépanneur vint nous secourir en transportant notre voiture sur sa plateforme jusqu ‘ à son garage . Naturellement il n’ avait pas la pièce et s’interrogeait sur les causes de ce problème d’embrayage . De toute façon plusieurs jours étaient à prévoir . Nous rentrâmes donc à Amiens avec une voiture de location .( offerte pour une journée ) par la service assistance de notre assurance

Je ne peux pas dire que nous étions joyeux . c’ est une déception pour nous deux et pour notre fils .Nous attendons des nouvelles de la voiture et quand elle sera réparée nous irons la chercher par le train !!
Adieu la Côte d’Azur !
Comme le garagiste disait : mieux vaut une panne comme cela qu’un accident . Evidemment !
Et demain il fera beau

October 12, 2009 Photo M.Fauquet The car is not happy and us either . L ' auto n ' est pas joyeuse et nous non plus.

Yesterday , Monday in the morning we were driving joyously from Amiens to the Azurean Coast ( Mediterranee ) for a sweet and sunny week stay at our oldest son ‘s .. The total distance was about 1200 km , but we had reserved a hotel at mid-distance to take a rest .

We were on the highway with already 300 km behind us when the car broke down : the clutch pedal was not working anymore ,no way to change gears . However I succeeded to reach a parking lot .

A garage mechanic came to rescue us, carrying our car on his platform to his garage . Of course he did not have the piece to replace and was wondering about the causes of this clutch problem . Anyway a few days were needed .So we came back to Amiens with a rental car . (proposed for free for a day by the assistance service of our car insurance )

I cannot say we were rejoicing . It is a deception for both us and for our son . We still are waiting for the news about the car . When it will be repaired we will go to take it by train !!

Good bye, Azurean Coast .

As the garage mechanic said : this technical incident is better than an accident !! Obviously ..
And tomorrow the weather will be beautiful!

Je sais le sujet peut paraître léger et non signifiant sur le plan philosophique, mais je peux vous assurer que je vois rarement ma femme porter un chapeau. Ce n’est pas qu’elle déteste les chapeaux ni qu’elle se trouve laide avec mais elle ne peut pas les supporter . Cela lui procure une sorte de gène physique Ainsi elle porte un chapeau à peu près une fois tous les 10 - 12 ans.
Le 12 septembre dernier nous étions au mariage de mon filleul dans la région de la Baie de Somme et la mère du marié insista pour que Janine porte un chapeau. C’était un événement.
Cela n’ a pas échappé à un de mes cousin qui a pris ces touchantes vues de Janine bavardant avec Manon et Antoine , deux de nos petits-enfants .

I know the topic may look light and not much philosophically meaningful but I can assure you I see rarely my wife wearing a hat . It is not she hates hats nor she don’ t find herself good looking with but she cannot bear them . This brings to her a kind of physical discomfort. So she wears a hat once all the 10 or 12 years .
Last September 12 we attended the wedding of my Godson in the area of the Bay of Somme and the groom‘s mother wanted Janine wearing a hat . It was an event . This didn’ t escape to the eyes of a cousin of mine who took those touching views of Janine chatting with Manon and Antoine , two of our grandchildren.

C’ est mon jour de fête

Célébrons ce jour de la St Michel le 29 Septembre. Ce jour est encore un jour d’ été , la lumière est brillante .
C’ est la fête de tous les Michel , Michael , Michelle et Michèle . Ce nom est celui de l’ archange Michel . Les anges sont souvent cités dans la bible mais trois seulement sont nommés ,Michel , signifiant en Hébreu « qui est comme Dieu ? », Gabriel « Dieu montre sa force « et Raphaël « Dieu guérit « .
L’ ange Michel est la puissance d’amour de Dieu en chacun de nous luttant contre le mal dans le monde . Il est la lumière contre l’ ombre dans nos vie .

J’avoue que j’ai toujours aimé ce jour de la St Michel.

Il est vénéré dans beaucoup de régions dans le monde . Le 11 septembre dernier nous étions au mont St Michel en Normandie , fameux site, très fréquenté par les pèlerins et les touristes . les touristes ne sont ils pas des pèlerins à leur manière .

Let celebrate Michael ‘ s Day ( Michaelmas ) on September 29. This day is still a summer day . The light is bright
It is the celebration of all of the Michel , Michael , Michelle , Michele . This name is the archangel Michel ‘ s one .. The angels often are mentioned in the Bible but only three have a name : Michel meaning in Hebrew “ who is like God ? “ , Gabriel “ God shows his strength “ and Raphael “ God brings healing” .

The angel Michel impulses in each of us the power of God’s love fighting the evil in the world . It ‘ s the light against the shadow in our life.
He is venerated in many places in the world . Last September 11 we were at the Mount Saint-Michel in Normandy , renowned place for the pilgrims and the tourists .( are not the tourists a kind of pilgrims ? )

Aujourd’hui j ‘ ai reçu des appels téléphoniques , des messages , des e cards de la famille et amis . Nous avons ouvert une bouteille de champagne ce midi et nous finirons le reste ce soir à souper .(un excellent souper )
Mais cet après – midi avec l’ aide de l’ ange Michel je combattis ma paresse chronique en rentrant le bois pour l’ hiver dans son abri . ( avec Janine qui insista pour travailler avec moi ). Je n’ ai pas pu l’ arrêter .
Le soleil de la St Michel brille . Il faut se réjouir .( toute la semaine ) autant que possible .

Today I received phone calls , messages and e.cards from family and friends . We opened a bottle of champagne at lunch and this night at supper we will drank the other half !!!.( it has been an excellent supper )
But in this afternoon with the help of the angel Michel , I fought my chronic laziness in putting the wood for this winter in the shed .( with Janine who was insisting to work with me . I could not stop her ) !!

The sun of Michaelmas is shining . We have to rejoice ( as much as possible) all the week!

Le jeudi 10 septembre nous visitions la région autour de Saint Malo piloté par notre cousin Gaston et sur le coup de midi nous arrivions à Dinan , sur le port fluvial . . Le site était magnifique et au bord de la rivière Rance s’alignaient une série de restaurants très accueillants . Nos choisîmes le premier ( en bas à gauche sur la photo ci – dessous ) . Nous étions vraiment très bien : bon repas et même plus , la fraîcheur de la rivière nous soulageait de la chaleur .

On Thursday September 10 we were visiting shepherded by our cousin Gaston the area around Saint Malo in Brittany.(West France ) At noon we were in Dinan , at the river port .The site was wonderful and at the bank of the river a row of restaurants were all very welcoming. We chose the first ( on the left low corner of the picture above ) . Ah ! how well we were : a good meal and even more , the freshness of the river softened the heat .

Quand nous sommes sortis le ventre bien rempli , nous décidâmes de visiter le centre de la ville .Hélas il était perché sur une colline de 75 mètres .
Dinan est une ville fortifiée avec une ceintures de remparts . Nous avons escaladé courageusement cette petite rue pavée , à la pente raide avec heureusement beaucoup de magasins d’artisans et d’ artistes pour faire halte.

When we left , our stomach well filled , we decided to visit the centre of the town . Alas , this last was perched on a 75 meter high hill.
Dinan is a fortified town with a belt of ramparts .So, we climbed courageously the steep slope of this narrow street paved with cobblestones .
Fortunately there were many art or craft shops to make pauses . ( photo above ).

At last we reached the door of the town.

Nous n ‘ avions pas assez d’yeux pour admirer les vieilles maisons à encorbellement venant directement du Moyen –Age. Et nous marchions , marchions;..

We had not enough eyes to admire the old half trimmered houses coming directly from the Middle Age . And we walked , we walked .....

En sortant de la basilique ,dans le porche, j ' ai été frappé par cette peinture naïve montrant une procession vers le calvaire en costume traditionnel breton .

Je devine que vous devez être déjà bien fatigués de la visite . Aussi nous sortons de la ville de l ' autre côté .
Mais là que voyons nous ? Les remparts et le château du Duc de Bretagne . Allons nous monter au sommet ???

I guess you are very tired of that visit . So we come out of the town !
But what ? What do we see ? The ramparts and the castle of Duke of Brittany ( XIV th century ) . Will we climb at the top ?

Oui nous avons grimpé et c ' est un signe de victoire que je fais au pied de la statue de DU GUESCLIN , un heros national , qui força les Anglais à lever le siège de la villle en 1364 !!

Yes we climbed at the top of the castle . This is a sign of victory given by me at the foot of the statue of DU GUESCLIN, a national hero who forced the Englishes to raise the siege of the town in ...1364 !!

Après quoi nous avons eu à descendre précipitamment la colline en prenant un raccourci car la voiture était restée parquée au port . Cela a été le rush final pour eviter un PV pour stationnement excessif !! ( pas très glorieux !!
Quand je vous disais que nous avions fait du sport dans une ville médiévale !!!

After that we had to go down fastly the hill by a shortcut because the car was remained parked at the river port . This has been the final rush to avoid a ticket for excess of parking time !( not too much glorious )

La semaine dernière nous etions en Bretagne du Nord dans un port appelé St Malo . Nous étions invités par notre cousin Gaston qui nous a fait découvrir le site et ses environs

Last week we were in North Brittany ( West France ) in a harbour called St Malo . We were invited by our cousin Gaston who made us explore the site .

Saint - Malo est une ville historique et est entourée de remparts . Cette photo a été prise Mardi dernier 8 septembre . La lumière était si vive que la photo en est saturée .
L ' océan atlantique avait pris des allures de Méditerranée.. Bleu ! Chaud !

Saint -Malo is a historic town protected by a belt of ramparts. The picture above has been taken last Tuesday September 9 . The light was so much bright than the photo is saturated .
The Atlantic Ocean had a look of Mediterranean Sea . Blue ! and hot !

Janine qui prit la plupart de ces photos a été séduite par ce charmant voilier glissant sur l ' eau vers le port en se glissant entre les nombreux îlots rocheux .

Mais le jour suivant , la musique était differente .Le vent soufflait et il faisait plutôt froid . Le temps est changeant en Bretagne . Nous avons marché quand même le long des falaises
contemplant la mer agitée , face contre le vent !

Wednesday , September 10 . Against the wind ! face au vent !

But the day after ( wednesday September 10) the music was totally different . A strong breeze instead and it was cold .Weather is changing in Brittany .
In spite of that we walked and walked at the edges of the cliffs . we stared at the tumultuous sea , our face against the wind .

Ce même jour dans l ' après midi , c ' était la marée basse et sans hésitation en vaillants explorateurs , nous avons escaladé une des petites îles qui gardent l ' entrée du Port de St Malo..

On this same wednesday in the afternoon , it was low tide . The valiant explorers didn' t hesitate to climb one of the islands that guard the entrance of the harbour of St Malo .
On the picture we are standing at the top of the Grand Be .

Près de là nous nous sommes recueillis devant la tombe d'un grand écrivain français , Chateaubriand , ( 1768- 1848) précuseur des romantiques qui a demandé à être enterré sur cette île au bord de la falaise
pour ne plus entendre que le son de la mer et du vent .

No far we were in meditation in front of the renowned French writer, Chateaubriand ' s grave ,( 1768- 1848 ) . He influenced very much the romantic literature .
He wanted to be buried on this island at the edge of the cliff so that he would hear only the sounds of the sea and the wind !

Mon cousin Gaston est très intéressé par la flore des falaises . Des plantes rares poussent sur les parois rocheuse et au sommet comme la Crythme et le Chysantème marin ( non représentés sur la photo !! Trop dangereux pour la photographe )

Quelques fleurs du haut de la falaise ( mauve et diplotaxis à feuilles ténues = roquette ) mais ce ne sont pas reéllement des espèces typiques des falaises maritimes
Some flowers at the top of the sea cliffs but they are not typical of the sea cliffs : mallow and rocket.( diplotaxis tenuifolia ) .

My cousin Gaston is interested in plants growing on the cliffs . Some of them are rare ( Crythmum and Chrysanthemum maritimum ) .They grow on the wall of the cliffs .
They are not showed on the picture above . Too much dangerous for the photographer( janine )

Ainsi, en deux jours nous avons marché et grimpé , monté et descendu, pour connaître l ' aspect prodigieux et changeant de la Bretagne qui la rend si attractive. Mais nous avions à rester une journée de plus pour connaître un peu mieux l ' histoire de ce secteur .

So in two days we walked and climbed , went up and down to know the prodigious and changing look of BRITTANY THAT MAKES IT SO ATTRACTIVE . But we had to study the historic part of this area so we stayed a day more /

La rentrée des classes.
The start of the school year

En ce moment c ‘ est la rentrée des classes . Nous avons retrouvé une photos de cette rentrée datant de 1971 . Quatre de nos enfants étaient prêts pour le premier jour de classe ( cf la légende de la photo ) . Le cinquième ( Isabelle ) avait seulement 3 semaines et le sixième ( jean- Baptiste n’ était pas né ).

Nos enfants à la rentrée des classes en 1971 ; de gauche à droite : Véronique (5),Carole (9) Thierry (7) Pierre ( 3). Ce dernier allait à l ' école pour la première fois .

It is the time of the start of the school year . We have found out a picture of this same event in 1971 . Four of our children were ready to go back to school ( see the caption below the picture above . The firth (Isabelle ) was only 3 week old and the 6^th was not born ( Jean –Baptiste ).

Restant sur le même sujet nous nous sommes souvenus que nous avions une photo des enfants de Carole prise en 1994 . Il ‘ agit d’une nouvelle génération qui prend le chemin de l‘école .

Stuck on on the same topic we reminded of another photo taken in 1994 showing Carole ‘s children ( 3 of our grandchildren ). They are a new generation on the way of the school .

15 ans plus tard voici ces mêmes enfants cette année 2009. Julie ( 22 ans ) a son master et prepare l ‘ Agrégation de physique , Simon( 18 ans et demi ) vient d ‘ avoir son baccalauréat et Thomas ( 17ans et demi )commence sa dernière année de lycée .
Ainsi depuis 1971 jusqu ‘à 2009 nous voyons la connaissance se transmettre de génération en génération . N’ est – ce pas impressionnant .

15 year later here are those same children this year 2009 .Julie ( 22) got a master and prepares a high contest of the teaching : the Agregation of physic , Simon ( 18 1/2)got the baccalaureat = graduation of high school , and Thomas(171/2) starts the last year of high school = Lycee in French .
So from 1971 to 2009 we see the knowledge transmitted from generation to generation .. Don’ t you think this is impressing ?

Au moment où je réalise cette entrée je reçois d ' Angleterre la photo de deux autres petits enfants Sarah et Joe qui font aussi leur rentrée , en uniforme .

Just when I am writing this entry , I receive from England the picture of two other grandchildren Sarah and Joe going back to school , wearing an uniform.
