Seeing and understanding.

Voir et comprendre.
Seeing and understanding

English version below the picture

port d ' Antibes

You see above a photo I took in Antibes ( French Riviera ) last summer and that I have posted on Xanga  some months ago . What do we see? A boat, a blue sky and so for the sea. Of course the photo is not bad but it is quite ordinary. Finally I wondered why I took this so much banal picture!

I have just understood this week by finding incidentally a version modified by a Xanga friend Mitzirenee of the same photo ( above ) .I had a shock at seeing it.

I found what I felt and that I wanted to express when I took the photo: I was in the   enchantment to discover for the first time in my life the French Riviera , I was amazed  by the brightness of light, I was like in a white and blue cloud, I had a bath  in the magic of light, I felt the inexpressible happiness to be in another world

Maison bretagne
maisonbretpaint

Mitzirenee transformed the simple sight reproduced by the photograph in an interpretation finding what I felt and wanted to express more or less confusedly at this time.. Here is above another modification that she brought to a photograph taken in Brittany in …  2005 which says definitely the deep feeling that was mine  by seeing this old home

Can we really understand what a document( picture or text ) says  by a simple immediate reading ?Should not it be interpreted to understand the state of mind of the author in the context of the time of the production  and to seize the message he wanted to express ?

I take photos and look back on some and think, "What was it that called me to take this picture?" I realize that the photo is an attempt to capture the mood/feeling you get by being in the place. So, I agree with you. Sometimes an immediate reading is not the best - it may contain much more meaning than the first glance reveals.

Definitely a feast for the eyes today my friend. Your photos are the reality and her enhancements are the dream state of mind.

All are wonderful.

I read once that Paul Klee had an exhibit of his paintings. He overheard two people describing what the artist meant when he painted a particular work. Klee walked over and said.."How interesting. I had no idea that was what I was thinking when I painted it!"

Dear Michel, these photos are beautiful as you have taken them however the artistry is interesting. It is fun to work with programs and make interesting ideas.
I hope you are well.
Here, everything is busy. The weather is not so warm today and I must go out and trim the grass along the fence and such.
I hope your garden is looking perfect.
Lizzie leaves for Montpellier on the 24th!! she is excited. She will not have a laptop but she does have a iPod touch.

Love to all of you, Rosemary

La première fois à la Côte d'Azur l'année passée? Sérieusement? Si j'habitais en France, j'irai à la Côte d'Azur à chaque année! ;)

I think every one " sees " a painting/ photo in a different way. Stand in an art gallery for a while, looking at one painting and gain so much more from the art created by a master. Too often these days we rush from one thing to another and never really " look " at things properly so we miss much of what the artist intended be it in painting , poetry or prose.  Marie

I find peace, serenity and harmony in the first photo taken in Antibes.    I find myself drawn to the life, history and rugged beauty of Mitzirenee photo.  Great shots.

Those pictures are terrific. They remind me that though photos are often powerful, paintings are even more so, for they contain more of the artist himself. And that is what transforms the very ordinary into magic.

It is quite amazing now how photographs can be transformed into paintings, drawings and other versions of their orginal selves via computer editing tools! I really like the old house photo, and the painting version.

Very nice photos and artistic renderings.  I can see how they helped to capture your impressions of those places.  As long as I can remember, I've thought any art that is made public, whether words, photos, paint, music, etc., is made up of the original artist's and whoever else perceives it, individual interpertations.  That is part of the wonder of any artistry, it is so much more than it is...

kind of like life...
