Le 14 Juin dernier nous étions invités par nos cousins René et Chantal à visiter un grand rassemblement de voiliers formant unearmada en provenance de différents pays du monde dans le port de Rouen à l’ embouchure de la Seine. C’ est vraiment impressionnant de contempler cette forêt de mâts et de gréements. Nous essayions d’imaginer à quoi ressemblait la vie des matelots face au vent et à la houle. Nous avions l'image d'un port du passé jusqu’ au XIXème siècle avant l’ utilisationde la vapeur
La vie sur ces bateaux devait être dangereuse mais je me souviens d’un romande Roger Vercel «  Remorques » dans lequel un personnage qui avait connu le temps de la marine à voile regrettait aussi son charme particulier. En tout cas on était loin des choses qu’on appelle bateaux comme les gigantesquesporte –conteneurs et même les récents bateaux de croisière

A forest of masts and riggings. Une forêt de mâts et de gréements .

On June 14 last we were invited by our cousins ​​Rene and Chantal to visit a largegathering of sail boatscalled the armada coming from all nations in the world in the port of Rouen at the mouth of the Seine. It is very impressive to contemplate the forest of masts and riggings. We tried to imagine what life was like sailors on these boats to play with the wind and sea swell. We had the image of a port of the past until the nineteenth century before the use of steam..

Life on those boats was dangerous, of course , but I remember a novel by Roger Vercel titled “ Remorques “ ( trailers ) in which a character who had known the time of the sail ships was regretting its charms . In any case we were far at this ancient times from those things we call boats as the gigantic container ships or even the new cruise ships

La Course Transatlantique en solitaire  

 The  Single-handed Trans-Atlantic Race

La Course Transatlantique en solitaire  parrainée par un journal anglais "The Observer" a été remportée en 1964 par Eric Tabarly avecle bateau qu’il venait de faire construire nommé Pen Duik II. Le premier bateau Pen Duick venait de son père et il a appris à naviguer avec lui. C'était la deuxième édition de cette course et un marin français gagnait devant les Anglais! (Mais il était né en Bretagne). Cet homme est devenu un héros national qui fut distingué la même année  par le général de Gaulle avec le grade de Chevalier dans l'Ordre de la Légion d'honneur ". Ensuite, Eric Tabarly a fait d'autres bateaux de plus en plus performants. Cinq au total ont été nommés Pen Duick. Ce sont ces cinq bateaux qui ont été montrés ici ( photos ci-dessous) . Tabarly a continué à courir de nombreuses courses et était très renommé. Malheureusement, il est mort  en 1998 dans un accident alors qu'il naviguait vers l'Ecosse: un longeron l’a jeté par-dessus bord en mer d'Irlande. Tout le monde en France connaît cet homme qui était un marin exemplaire.

  The  Single-handed Trans-Atlantic Race sponsored by an English  newspaper ” the Observer “ has been won in 1964 by Eric Tabarly with his boat just built  named Pen Duick II . The first boat Pen Duik was owned by his father and he learnt to navigate with it  . It was the second edition of this race and a French sailor won it  in front of the English sailors (but he was a Britton ) !! . This man became a national hero distinguished  by the general de Gaulle with the rank of Knight in the Order of the Legion of Honour “ the same year . Then Eric Tabarly made other boats more and more performing. Five at the total were  named Pen Duick . Those are those five boats that were showed  in Rouen ( photos above ).  Tabarly continued to run many races and was renowned . Unfortunately he died in 1998 in an accident when he was sailing to Scotland : a spar threw him overboard in the Irish Sea . Everyone in France knows this man who was an examplary  sailor.
